It was our first day and our friends last day in Honolulu. So we made arrangements to meet up for dinner at Basalt, which is located in the Duke's Lane Marketplace. We arrived for our 6:30 reservations and had an option of patio or inside dining, which we chose the latter. After ordering our drinks, Honolulu Beerworks 'South Shore' Stout, Lilikoi Punch, and Mai Tai, we placed our dinner orders. Our waiter then brought out the breadbasket of charcoal rolls and butter. Yes, charcoal! These black rolls had a sweet taste that are made with charcoal. Unusual and tasty. Prime rib 10oz - the Hawaiian salt and herb crusted prime rib was ordered medium rare and it came with garlic mashed potatoes, green beans and baby carrots. Having had prime rib many times, I prefer the meat to be red edge to edge, but the cap on this was brown. The meat was tender and moist. It was a good prime rib. Kurobuta pork chop - had a taste of this grilled bone-in chop. It was nicely seasoned and was tender. Our waiter provided pleasant service. Had tried their Thanksgiving special which was ready to eat after reheating everything. The Turkey was good roasted with herbs . We had been walking around all day and were HUNGRY. Basalt was right around the corner, so there we went. I ordered a seared ahi entree, and my partner got the fattoush salad. The entrees also came with the amazing charcoal pandesal (bread) and butter. SO GOOD. My seared ahi was great - a thin coat of sear on the outside, and came with some greens and a sauce that went really well with the protein. My partner says the salad was good, fresh, balanced, and satisfying, with a good balance of textures. We also got the yuzu highball, which was one of the drink specials, and that was solid. Our server Matt was amazing. He warned me that the seared ahi was the lightest entree (which I guess some customers were not pleased with). He also explained the origin of the bread (they wanted the bread to look like lava rocks), and also mentioned that there was a diverse group of chefs in the kitchen. First off, the service was good. I sat outside and it was a beautiful day. Unfortunately, the food was not good. I ordered the Asian Salad and substituted shrimp. The dressing had soy in it, so I expected a little discoloration in the lettuce... however, it was obvious by the pink edges on the lettuce that this was old lettuce and the sauce was used to cover that up. The shrimp was okay, but for the price, this was the worst meal I've had since I've been here. Flavor was not there and I recommend the dressing on the side so there is no confusion. Previous reviews and posts show several menu items. I was there at 12:30 and they only offered brunch and a couple of sandwich and salad options. Very disappointing. Service was good and the place is nice, it's in the same space as two places that sell food mostly to go and a store similar to ABC. During dinner they have live music. Food was delicious. I stumbled upon this place while looking for someplace to eat for breakfast. I thought it would be on the higher end of the spectrum as far as prices go but everything was reasonably priced. For a date night out, we snagged reservations but it wasn't exceptionally busy on a weeknight so ambience was perfect! We each had a drink and some wine, with my husband ordering the paella and myself ordering the Mac nut crusted fish (marlin for that day). My husband found the paella to be decent albeit a bit less brothy than anticipated with the scallops cooked perfectly although the lobster slightly overdone. My fish was exceptional, with it being perfectly cooked and the melange of flavors mixing perfectly. Wow. What can I say. They do not disappoint! Came for our first dinner in Waikiki. We decided on the 3 course meal and split it between my brother and I. First off, the service was amazing! Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Always came around and made sure our needs were taken care of. We also had told him we were skydiving the following day and he drew us on our receipt! So sweet! Now for the food. We had the complementary charcoal bread which was great. My brother is a very picky eater and he even enjoyed it! With our meal we decided on the beef fries as a starter. The flavor was amazing. The sauce it came with was flavorful. Our ribeye was cooked to our liking (medium rare - the only way lol). And for dessert we had the cheesecake with a cherry sauce! A++! We got to sit in the patio and it was just perfect. The patio had lights hanging throughout and just made it nice and intimate. Let's do a quick update as I finally tried what I wanted to last time. The Charcoal Pancakes! These were delicious!!! The pancakes do taste very close to regular buttermilk pancakes, but with a hint of charcoal. The pancakes being so black, you might think it's actual charcoal. The whipped cream had charcoal in as well. The pancakes and whipped cream weren't very sweet, which is good. The guava strawberry sauce was tasty and went very well with the pancakes to give it a nice tart and sweetness. You get three layers of pancake and a generous amount of whipped cream and fresh fruit on top. The photo makes this look like a decadent chocolate cake! Very delicious. Highly recommended, and very filling. The next thing I wanted to try was the Prime Rib Moco. I was tempted by the Wagyu Patty Loco Moco, but I felt I've had that too recently. This Moco came with a side of toast, fresh strawberry jam, and fruit. The two sunny side eggs were a little over cooked as the yolk wasn't runny, but still acceptable and delicious. The prime rib was very good and tender. The rice was on the mushy side. The star was actually the gravy, which had solid flavors and taste. The problem was there was barely any gravy! 20% of the plate had gravy, and rest had nothing, which made this dish on the bland and boring side. Loco Mocos gotta be drowned in gravy! Or at least have enough of it where I wouldn't be able to see the bottom of the plate. The accompanying English Muffin was very good. Toasted perfectly with a nice even amount of butter and a tasty strawberry jam. Overall, I was happy with the Charcoal Pancakes and the Prime Rib Moco would've been much better with more gravy. I'll probably ask for more next time. The service was excellent. Very attentive, courteous, friendly, and professional staff. And 15% off with Yelp check in is awesome too! read more

It's bustling enough and isolated enough to feel like you're in a restaurant, altho it's adjacent to market and other food vendors inside the Duke's Lane market. Charcoal Pancake- Love! Good portion for 2-3 people, a bit of a bitter taste in charcoal adds a unique taste which I liked- my party said after some amount she can't have more (but she almost finished the plate with me). Comes out with berries with whipped cream and guava jam which is delicious. Ended up purchasing the pancake batter they sell at the market. Loco Moco- It's delicious! But not sure if wagyu beef adds a lot to the flavor. I'm not too particular about meat quality so don't take my word for it. Overall delicious but a little more green onion could've added freshness to the whole dish-we had it without spicy sauce and we regretted we didn't ask for it when they offered. But please do give it a try since it's hawaiian staple these two plates came out to be around $40, tip included. Delicious and delightful! We went for Saturday brunch. We were truly impressed with the level of care each dish was given. From the seasoning to the quality of the ingredients, just scrumptious! We made a reservation to ensure we would have an inside table (cars drive directly next to the lanai). The place never filled up to 100% capacity, but they got a busy. Our server was the sweet and friendly Ronald and boy does he know the menu! Struggling to determine what beer and cocktails to order, he expertly guided us to excellent tasting selections; a classic mimosa & a coconut hefeweizen. The coffee is really good here too. Foodwise the four of us had: 2 loco mocos, pork belly fried rice, bacon and eggs, avocado toast, ham & eggs benedict, prime rib melt and cheese burger with fries. Toward the end of our meal we ordered a 3rd loco moco to go. It's been a couple days since and we are still talking about that loco moco! The fries were served crispy and hot and seasoned. The hollandaise was delicious, every egg was cooked perfectly, from sunny side up, scrambled, poached and over medium. The breakfast potatoes had a great crunchy exterior and lots of flavor. Oh, and the strawberry preserves for the toast was really yummy. I thought the pork belly was just divine. Everything was on point with one exception: Server support. There were food runners, thank goodness. But other than that, no one supports the servers. No one else poured coffee or water. No one else cleared dirty plates. I'm not sure who designed the sections for the servers, but our server's tables were no where near each other. Literally he had the 1st table in the room, three tables over was us and then across the entire expanse of the room was his other table. Every server (I counted 4 or 5) was the same. It's so inefficient to spread out the section in that way. The manager (I assume the aloha shirt was the authority) helped expedite the food coming out of the kitchen. But he didn't do any table touches (except one single table). He didn't clear any plates or support the servers in any way that I could see. Their "Happy Hour" is GREAT and quite "budget friendly" considering the prices in the area. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were awsome as well, but their "happy hour" was "da bomb". Although not advertised Basalt and Duke's lane is part of the ABC (All Blocks Covered) conglomerate. Save your ABC receipts as you get a small gift from ABC after spending $100 or more at their locations (sorry but Basalt is not included). The only downfal to Basalt is that their "Happy Hour" only runs fron 2pm to 5pm and they close super early at 9pm. read more

Amazing breakfast! Just got back from a week long vacation in Hawaii, which was also for a friend's wedding. The charcoal pancakes with guava-strawberry sauce was phenomenal! Lobster bisque - 7/10 was pretty decent and had that taste in seafood broths with the slight bitterness of shells, if that makes sense. Macadamia nut fish - 6/10 Not the best, but not the worst. I think it's personal preference, but I don't like the fish even though it was cooked well. Prime Rib - 7/10 decent Rib eye - 8/10 just a little better than the prime rib in terms of texture and taste. Miso cod - 9/10 hard to mess this one up as the fish itself is already super buttery and rich. Small portion, but definitely worth the $value.
