This place is inside Duke lane NOT the popular restaurant called DUKES! It's a restaurant inside a market place that has different small shops/eatery. My daughter had the honors of receiving their first kids menu print out lol! They had someone draw the art but they haven't gotten the chance to print it since they were still trying to get around the kids menu concept for their restaurant. It was so nice of them to actually print it out just for her. My daughter loved it and she even met the guy who drew the art work. Staff was very welcoming and our server was great! NOW LETS GET TO THE DRINKS: I had the ponzu drink which I thought was strong lol. I took my husbands whisky cocktail they had on their menu. STARTERS: ADOBO WINGS , they were good. It wasn't overwhelmingly adobo flavor. Just light and just right. I had their MISO BLACK COD and oh my god! One if not the one of the best fish dish I ever had. Really loved the food and service at this place just off the main drag in Waikiki. It's inside a market, which makes it look a little food-courtish, but don't let that deter you. They have some great gourmet entrees and a surprisingly extensive wine list. My paella was just the right size and one of the best entrees I had during our visit to Honolulu. The charcoal buns look really strange but they are strangely addictive. I could have eaten a couple of baskets myself. The one thing I would say about this place is that it didn't really feel like Hawaii. I felt like I was at a place in midtown manhattan, eating outside in between high-rises (complete with some unwelcome breezes and some pretty high prices). But that's not was not a bad thing, at least for us, but something to be aware of if you're looking for a "Hawaiian" dining experience. read more

Split a Prime Rib melt with my daughter. It was delicious and enough to satisfy your hunger. I had the caramelized onion on the side , because my daughter did not want onions on hers. It was a delicious. The fries were the best I have had. It was crispy with a lot of salt. They must of double fried them. We ate outside and we felt the AC from the inside. Service was good. It can be extremely loud but overall a casual ambiance. This place can seat small and large parties, as well as seating at the bar. Service was also friendly and attentive. I ordered the pork belly fried rice. It came with two eggs (your way), toast choice, and two pieces of fruit (orange and pineapple). I also ordered a side of pancake and syrup. The rice in the fried rice was not like your typical Asian rice, it was thicker. You can definitely tell the difference in rice. The pork belly was soft. The flavor of the fried rice was ok. It had a distinct black pepper flavor instead of soy sauce to me. The pancake was charcoal pancake. I actually enjoyed this because the syrup wasn't overly sweet. Our first night in Honolulu brought is to Basalt inside Duke's Lane Market & Eatery on Kuhio. It seemed a bit odd that this restaurant was back-to-back with a market and other counter eateries. The open kitchen and bar looked really nice though and there was outside seating but we decided to sit inside with the AC. After checking our vaccination cards, our hostess showed us to our table, which had good separation from others. We were served a basket of charcoal infused rolls that the server said are Fillipino originated. The prix fixe dinner looked pretty good. It was a little pricey at $67, but this is Waikiki and the choices are pretty good. You can start with a choice of either lobster bisque or mixed green salad, followed by Ribeye Steak or Mixed Seafood Paella and dessert choice of Lilikoi Creme Brulee or Basque Cheesecake. Both my son and I went bisque, paella & brulee and everything was excellent, especially the Seafood Paella with a lobster tail scallops and shrimp. We also shared the Spicy Kampachi Poke, which was seasoned with sambal and served with a rice cracker. My wife had the fresh catch of the day, which was mahi mahi, in a macadamia nut & panko crust on a bed of asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes, a very tasty dish. A friend recommended Basalt for their charcoal pancakes and loco moco. Didn't have time during this trip for bfast and ended up dining here for dinner as the menu looked promising. Started the meal off with their adobo wings which were tasty. The wings were perfectly fried and loved the adobo sauce which was used to coat the wings. The chili vinegar dipping sauce added a nice acidity to each bite. I ended up ordering the prime rib as I saw a few people rave about it and the wife ended up ordering the paella. Though the prime rib was cooked to the right temperature, the beef was fairly tough. Do think the prime rib was a bit under seasoned as I thought it was bland. Also noticed the prime rib was served fairly cold which was a bit odd. The paella did have decent flavor it was a bit wet and had more of a congee like consistency. Noticed most of the patrons ordering the 3 course prix fixe menu which definitely was the better value. Though the creme brûlée was decent, we could barely taste any lilikoi in it. The caramelized sugar top was nicely torched. Service was excellent but not sure I'd come back for dinner. Not sure what all the hype is about. My Caesar salad was overly peppered which made it unenjoyable and the blacken croutons were sweet and way too hard. The only redeeming part was the fish... it was perfectly cooked and very tasty. We came here to try their famous Charcoal Pancakes. This place is located inside the Duke Lane Market. They have a nice size outdoor seating, with the tables spread out. Our server was pleasant and attentive. We ordered 2 other items besides the pancakes -the veggie omelette and the side of portuguese sausage. Those 2 were equally good, perfectly made. The pancakes, on the other hand, i thought were just ok. Great presentation, however, flavor-wise, it was bland, i didn't really care for the flavor of the strawberry sauce on top; I had to ask for maple syrup to give it some sweetness. Heads up on the location: Between the International Market place and Nordstrom Rack INSIDE a food court / store. The location threw me off because I was expecting fine dining with the amazing food pictures and the white cloth tables. My instinct walking in was to lower my expectations. Hmmm...Basalt was an unexpected dinner for a large group of about 16. The team at Basalt was very accommodating and Trillion was the best server! From the drinks to the dinner, it was a great 3 hour pleasure tour. The location is situated next to Nordstrom's and parking was connected to the actual building. What I really enjoyed was the prix fixe menu. For $70 I was able to get lobster bisque, which was Top 5 in my book. 12 oz ribeye and dessert. The charcoal pan de sal was unusual to look at but great to eat. A+ for presentation on all of the dishes. The steak was rare, just how I like it, but the reduction sauce overpowered the steak. Sometimes sea salt and pepper is all you need on a good steak. I also ordered the pulpo or octopus. Presentation again was great, but the sauce was a bit too much. It tasted like a Smokey chipotle-ranch sauce and not what I was expecting. In all, a great experience with great friends! Casual but classy, this place has both indoor (AC) and outdoor seating. It shares an open space with Spitfire, a bakery, and some other eateries with quality products in Duke's Lane. I went specifically for the signature charcoal buttermilk pancakes as recommended to me. The guava strawberry sauce, fresh berries, and charcoal whipped cream were a nice compliment to the pancakes which were firm and slightly crispy on the outside. Good body and not too sweet! It looks like the black colored items on the menu have been pared down as compared to when I came here years ago. Hopefully the special properties of the charcoal did whatever they were supposed to do to me. My friend and I also shared an avocado toast which was both tasty and beautifully presented with colorful tomatoes, watermelon radish, pumpkin seeds, micro greens and an edible flower which made it truly garden like. The rest of the menu looked quite good for those who want more protein. I'm sure the lunch and dinner menus also offer high quality food that isn't too fussy. They also have a happy hour with daily drink specials that sounds good! With validated parking in the Hyatt Centric, I would return here as a local for the food, though maybe not for a special occasion. I've been to Basalt two times since i've stayed in my hotel in Waikiki. It's a pretty packed place, seems like everyone enjoyed their stay as much as I did. I ordered the loco moco consecutively and it's by far THE BEST loco moco i've ever had in my entire life. Nothing can beat it and i'm sad that this is the only restaurant here on the island. I recommend it to anyone who decides they wanna eat here for brunch. The patty is i believe made with wagyu steak and it was so soft and tender, it literally melts in your mouth. The fried rice is soooo delicious and juicy. And the egg was made to perfection. I wiped this plate clean, not one rice was left behind, that's how tasty the loco moco is. read more

After frolicking around Waikiki Beach, I yelped and decided to check out Basalt due to its high reviews. We had no issues getting seated on the patio without reservation and it was coincidentally HH as well. Mai Tai (1/5): Worst mai tai I've had all trip. Definitely not worth the $15 that I paid for a tropical drink. Bulgogi buns (5/5): Korean/Chinese fusion that works! The bulgogi was flavorful when eaten with the garnish of kimchi. It was a special so I was glad I got to try it. Bar burger (5/5): Delicious - The 4 oz. wagyu beef patty was extremely tender and juicy. It was a simple but yummy burger. Also added an egg for another $2. Beef fries (3/5): Not my favorite. Overall dish was kind of greasy. Peruvian spiced beef was tough and chewy while the fries were soaked with oil and soggy. Our food tour resumed at our "old favorite" Basalt on my birthday. Don't ask how old ... let's say O-L-D! We often go shopping at International Marketplace (Saks and Anthropologie) and end up at Basalt for dinner. It's convenient, the food is very good, and the prices (for Waikiki) are excellent. The prices have crept up since our visit in April but it remains our "value play" restaurant in Waikiki. We began with a 2016 Trefethen Red Dragon's Tooth Malbec blend from Napa Valley. It is 47% Malbec, 27% Petit Verdot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot. It's a fabulous value at Basalt because the cost is less than at a wine store. The wine is rich with ripe fruit, spices and cracked pepper. Our appetizers were the Smoked Kona Kampachi and the Chef's Choice Poke (ahi, avocado, tobiko and ogo atop lettuce). The Kampachi is food art, with slices of Kampachi arranged into a flower and pickled vegetables adorning the plate. Both appetizers were great! Our entrees were the Vegetable Gnocchi, the Miso Black Cod and a side of charred Brussel Sprouts. We've enjoyed the gnocchi on past visits but this was the first time we tried the "butterfish". A fillet of black cod with a subtle dashi nage. This sauce makes the dish ... dashi, soy sauce, grated ginger, sake and butter. Baby Bok Choy and sliced Shiitake mushrooms completed the dish. The charred Brussel Sprouts were fabulous ... balsamic vinegar and pomegranate made it special; slightly sweet, offset by the bitterness of the Brussel Sprouts and the char. We shared a Tiramisu for dessert. Basalt gifted me with a dessert cake ... we think a white cake with lilikoi in the frosting. Yummy! What can I say; Basalt remains a favorite of ours. They offer an extensive and eclectic wine list (the majority reasonably priced) and a well-stocked bar. Highly recommended! read more
