Drove from Oakland to try this place out. I think it's family owned. It's good and really good value for fresh fish. They even have their own parking lot and a small table area. It was pretty busy when I got here but they serviced people quickly. They sell sashimi grade tuna, salmon and hamachi. I'm definitely going to have to come back next time and try that for my next diy handroll day. My husband and I tried their salmon shoyu poke combo, fish ceviche, and garlic fries. I forgot to take pics because I was so excited to eat. I love that the salmon poke with shoyu comes with the sauce on the side and you can order poke without rice. I loved whatever they put in that shoyu sauce. It was better than regular shoyu. The fish ceviche was super fresh and had a quite a lot of fish. Garlic fries were BOMB. I almost didn't get them but saw someone else with them. Next time gonna have to try more of their hot food items and sushi rolls. Such a good grab n go place when you're in a hurry. read more

THE FRIED FISH IS SOOOO FIRE! Actually the best fish I've personally had in the bay (based on how I like my fish). It's literally The perfect amount of crispy, does not have a fishy smell or isn't slimey under the crunchy skin like most places I've gone to. I placed an order over the phone and was told it will be ready within 15-20 minutes. I showed up 25 minutes later and still had to wait another 15 minutes. While standing there waiting for my order, I'm listening. The last thing missing in my order was the garlic fries. I have come here multiple times now since it's walking distance from my new place and the spicy salmon poke along with the hamachi sushi rolls are my go to! They're super cheap and delicious! Came here after seeing grub with mike's video. 5 stars for the soft shell crab sandwich and garlic fries. That's what I would really get if it's your first time here. Def get some tartar sauce on the side too. Fish and chips also pretty decent, just wish the fish had a little more flavor. My coworker picked up the teriyaki salmon plate for my lunch today. It was purchased around noon, opened about an hour later, container was still warm. Not only was it super dry, the consistency was that of shoe leather. When I called to complain, the person on the other end (young male) said he'd speak to the cook. When I asked if that was all he was going to do for me/my coworker, he said yes. When I asked if he would give money back, store credit or replace the meal he said he could only speak to the cook and management. What a sad way to show customer service.Shame on him. I was excited to try this new place but found it underwhelming. I ordered the Hawaiian Shoyu Tuna Poke and it wasn't like shoyu poke in Hawaii at all.... It's just plain cubed tuna with a container of soy sauce. The fish was fresh though. Also ordered a medium clam chowder... it was fresh and hot but there were hardly any clams at all. The saltines were old and stale, with no crisp to them.... I also tried an octopus salad and found it too sweet, not savory or flavorful.... Their service was quick and polite. As a small business owner, I gotta say...these folks need to re-take Business 101 and Customer Service 101. I'm giving them two instead of one star only because the place was really clean, and the fish looked very fresh. However, they need to learn that: 1) As a business you should never turn down money. (Unless a customer is being a jerk, which I definitely wasn't.) 2) If a prospective customer politely makes a really simple request, like whether or not you can make her poké bowl with lettuce in the bottom instead of rice, you make it with lettuce! Especially when said customer wants to pay extra to add salmon eggs to the bowl. I was prepared to pay $16 instead of the usual $12 for something that would have cost them less to make. The girl behind the counter said they couldn't do it. I laughed, thinking she was kidding. She wasn't. So I went down the street to Hokkaido Sashimi, and they really hooked me up! Basa!!! I used to work on 24th & Harrison when I was in college and ended up working at humphry slocombe next door. I was a frequent customer and always enjoyed their food. I even had a chance to get to know and be familiar with the owners so it was nice to see their familiar faces working behind the counter on Saturday! When I saw they were opening one near my (newer) home I was so excited! It hasn't changed one bit. Simple and delicious! Cannot wait to become a new regular at this location. Food is decent. CA rolls are good. Shoyu salmon poke was good but I wish it wouldn't be cut up into such tiny pieces. Fish and chips were ok. The fish is thinner fish. The fries were good. The dishes came with appropriate sauces. Service was good with the male high school student. He was very polite, friendly, and attentive. I noticed he greeted everyone who came in the door and immediately acknowledged the customers. The woman who was there was just matter-of-fact. Would be nice if she could be friendly or smile or just try to show she's not bored even if she is bored. Ambiance was what I expected. This is mostly a take-out restaurant, so no frills. Most people took out but there were a few who ate at the tables. I appreciated having the standard table and chairs to eat at. There were 4 or 5 tables. I was seeking just standard stuff without table service so this was perfect. If you want to use the restroom, ask for the key at the counter. The seafood was so fresh! I got salmon poke and rainbow roll. Both were great! The roll was rolled tight and did not fall apart and the rice to fish ratio was perfect there was not too much rice in the roll!! Very tasty poke sauce, I would definitely recommend! A few weeks ago I came here for the first time, it was so good and fresh! I got the fish salad combo #4 and poke combo #1 to share. It was so good! I just ate here for the second time and it was not so good I got the same #1 fish salad combo and the fish wasn't as fresh, crisp and tender, the salad wasn't as fresh and the ends of the leaves were browned and some leaves were rotten. I decided to try the sushi combo and the sushi tasted like soap or lotion. I do not want to taste lotion or scented perfumes in my sushi. I couldn't finish it all. It was very unappetizing. I've worked in food service before and we were strictly told not use perfumes, or scented lotions at work while preparing food. We had to wear gloves and wash our hands quite often as food handling rules require. I am surprised they allowed this at an establishment that sells sushi and fresh fish. While I am not expecting sushi restaurant quality, I do expect it to not taste like someone's bath and body works hand lotion. I can go down to the other take out sushi grocery spot and know it won't have fragrance taste to it. I really enjoyed this spot so I will try again in a few months and hopefully this will be addressed soon and I will update my review. read more

Solid poke! Well seasoned, well cut/good texture, clean tasting. Fish and chips were crispy even after we took it home. Again, well seasoned. Be warned, it is southern fried--Not British fish n chips! It's breaded with cornmeal vs a beer batter. Crinkle cut fries were well fried/crispy and had some kind of cajun seasoning (vs just salt). Shrimp burger was also really good. The shrimps were small, tender, well cooked inside, crispy exterior (fried). It's not like a Japanese shrimp burger made with shrimp paste and fried. Bun was buttery and had a good balance of condiments and fresh leafy greens inside. Friendly customer service! Great prices, ok portions, but I think that justifies the price. I had their original location in SF a really long time ago and was excited to find out that they recently opened a location in Castro Valley. I went for their poke combo, which included either spicy or shoyu salmon, rice, seaweed salad, and water. I opted for the spicy salmon, and it was so flavorful! It did have a kick to it, so if you can't handle spice, you should go for the shoyu flavor. It tasted pretty fresh, and it's also a really good deal for only $12. They have a parking lot too, so parking shouldn't be a problem. I can't wait for my next visit! read more

Checked out Basa Seafood Express during their soft opening weekend. I've been looking for a poke spot in this area, so it was great to see this place open up! My sister and I ordered the shoyu salmon poke ($8) and spicy salmon poke ($8) for their BOGO free deal. We both really enjoyed the spicy salmon poke, it was much more flavorful than the shoyu salmon poke. These two items were pretty filling for us, especially because we ate them with rice and seaweed at home. Many items were out of stock by the time we ordered that afternoon.
