Braised Beef Noodle Soup
Keith O.

First, let me say that I ordered takeout. I didn't dine-in. So, my experience is limited to the dish I ordered. I can't speak too much about the decor of the place since I just stayed in the waiting area next to the cashier. The place did look nice and spacious. You could see the cooks prepare the meals through the window of the kitchen. The person who took my order was friendly. The soup itself was not bad. The noodles, I'm assuming, were handmade, maybe even hand-pulled. They were nice and firm. Not soggy or too soft. The beef and veggies were ok. The broth was good, but not great. However, for $20, I expected more. I found the dish was overpriced. Some people might really enjoy the dish. I don't hate it. I just can't see myself coming back for more. Maybe their other dishes might be better. I dunno. YMMV.

Really enjoyed the dry pot fish fillet and the green beans with shrimp. The pan fried buns were a bit doughy but overall really good place, would come back to try more!

~ Pan Fried Soup Dumplings (4pcs) $7.5 ~ [Rating: 1.75 / 5] The dumplings were served cold, and no soup inside the dumplings.... It was disappointing enough that we had to ask them to remake it. The second attempt was better; at least there was some soup. I don't particularly enjoy the thick dumpling skin, the bottom was crispy but too tough, and the meat filling was quite small. Overall, it neither looked nor tasted good. ~ Grandma's Pork Soup Dumplings (6pcs) $7.95 ~ [Rating: 2.75 / 5] The steamed soup dumplings were much better. They were served hot and filled with soup. However, the skin was too thick and sticky for my taste, and the meat filling ratio was small. - - - - - - - - - Will I be back? No For a restaurant that's well known for pan-fried soup dumplings, I'm really disappointed. Perhaps their stir-fry or noodle dishes are better, but I have no motivation to return and try them. In Manhattan, I prefer Steam for soup dumplings and Shanghai Time for pan-fried soup dumplings

spicy wontons in chili oil
Jasmine M.

It wasn't busy at all when I visited Baodega as a group of three on 7:45pm on Monday, so it was easy to get a table without a reservation. I ordered the spicy wontons in chili oil and the preserved cabbage and pork rice cakes. I was quite bewildered and disappointed by the spicy wontons, as they barely had any sauce, and the filling was dense and hard instead of being juicy and bouncy like a wonton should be. The little sauce it did have was quite flavorless and not spicy at all. The rice cakes were a bit better, but the pork was also quite hard. I felt like the dishes were not as hot as they should have been. Furthermore, we were still eating when they dragged a huge garbage bin by us, so the smell made the dining experience even more unpleasant. Would not recommend.

The service and atmosphere were fine, but unfortunately the food was average at best. The traditional pan fried soup dumpling was okay but I wouldn't consider any of the other dishes authentic at all.

Came here at 6pmish on a Tuesday and there was plenty of room for us. The menu included photos of every dish, which I appreciated. Service was quick, nice, and we received our food within about 10 minutes of ordering. The DanDan noodles were delish - the sauce was spicy, had plenty of pork, and the perfect balance of noodles. The wonton soup was good - it had 6 big wontons that tasted fresh. However, our favorite was the Grandma's Recipe Soup Dumplings - sooooo good Chewy outside, yummy broth, and rich, savory filling. Was less than $35 for all that, split amongst two people - we felt full and satisfied. Can't wait to come back, highly recommend for a quick delicious meal!

i thought the sheng jian bao (steamed pan-fried buns) and xiao long bao (soup dumplings) had quite flavorless fillings. the green beans and the roast pork bun were excellent though! service was really fast and they have a lot of seating inside

Just came for dinner with a friend after hearing the hype. We got seated quickly. We ordered a bunch of dim sum and the Peking duck bao buns. Our favorite were the duck buns and the pork soup dumplings. The spicy cucumber were interesting. Lots of garlic and the pictures didn't show garlic. The spicy wontons in chili oil came with crushed peanuts and the pictures on menu didn't show it either. Good thing we didn't have peanut allergies. We also got the pork and shrimp shumai as well as the shrimp dumplings. These were ok. They also weren't steaming, but luke warm. Not sure if this was an off night but the food was just ok at best. I've had better dim sum and soup dumplings, but the duck was super good with the right amount of fat. Service was ok. I think there is just one waiter.

While service tends to not be the forte of Chinese restaurants *cough cough*, I did expect decent service from Baodega given its location, marketing, and price range, but was left deeply disappointed. First of all, I love that they have their own reservation system on their website. I was able to easily make a reservation for 3 at 12:30pm the day before. However upon arriving, the host did not greet us or try to make eye contact with us. He was running around trying to play the role of host, waiter, and busser all at once. While I do feel for him, I think this is ridiculous on the business's fault. It's apparent that after their Tiktok boom they NEED to hire another person to keep up with the demand and there is absolutely no excuse they can't find someone to hire in this economy. The host never asked if we had reservations and I could not get the chance to tell him because he would always be away from the front counter. When a table was finally ready for us, he merely pointed at it from far away to tell us to sit down. While I understand how much he has on his plate due to the circumstances, I did not appreciate his behavior and way of handling it. It takes only a second to greet someone and 10 to show them to their table. We ordered the Traditional Shanghai Pan Fried Soup Dumplings and Grandma's Pork Soup Dumplings. Both had very thick skin and not a lot of soup in it. The flavors of the fillings were good. I felt the skin of Grandma's Pork Soup Dumplings to have a weird odor to it, but couldn't exactly pinpoint what it was. Needless to say, I wouldn't come again. The service was not great and the food was mediocre.

My Guh Guh (big bro in Mandarin) found this place on Tiktok, as they had a heart warming story and it is family owned and operated. Guh Guh is also the pickiest person when it comes to Chinese food as he is from Taiwan, so him saying it looks authentic was the only stamp of approval I needed to make the excursion to Flatiron. Guh Guh and I arrived at 2:30pm on a Saturday to a PACKED house. The Tiktok effect is so real. You could see the owner and his wife BUSTIN their ass in here, my boy was actually drenched in sweat. They were a little understaffed but it's all good that Tiktok had like 2.6 million likes in 2 days so... We ordered FEAST, as he is Guh Guh and I hadn't eaten all day so I was BIG Hungry... plus I wanted to impress Guh Guh and show him I could eat a lot! We could see the owner's wife handrolling the Bao (soup dumpling) through a glass window that peeks into the kitchen, so we centered our order around that. We ordered: Crab Roe and Pork Bao, Grandma's Pork Bao, Vege and Pork Spicy Dumplings, Peking Duck Burgers, Roast Pork Buns, Beef and Cucumbers, Dan Dan Noodle, and the Beef Dry Pot. Like I said, a FEAST. Big dogs gotta eat though........The waiter even chirped Guh Guh in Mandarin saying "You guys won't finish all that....." He learned the hard way not to mess with my Guh Guh! We DEMOLISHED everything. I mean it was 70/30 Guh Guh but still, I did okay. The food was PHENOMENAL. The Bao was actually the best I've had, and Guh Guh was obsessed and that man is hard to impress. The Dry Pot changed my life, as the vegetables and beef had the perfect amount of char that made them just a little crispy on every bite. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it now damn I loved that dry pot. My only complaint about this place was the name. "Baodega" just sounds like a cheap Chinese place that I would doordash on the way home after striking out at the local bar, and this place couldn't be further from that. But civil discourse is key to a functioning society, so fairplay. Creative differences. Guh Guh even texted me yesterday saying "DAMN THAT BAO PLACE WAS SO GOOD...WE GOTTA HIT IT AGAIN." That, my dear reader, is the highest compliment a Chinese restaurant in New York City can receive. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__

Crab Roe Soup Dumplings (6 pcs)
Hennessy T.

A cozy spot with great food. We were in the area and decided to grab dinner here and it did not disappoint! The noodles in the braised beef noodle soup were amazing and they were very generous with the beef. However, the soup was just a bit too salty for me. The crab roe soup dumplings were delicious and very meaty. Service was good- they came quickly to take our orders. I really appreciated the pictures on the menu- you can see exactly how the dishes look.

I didn't realize I tried this place before years ago! It's a cute place and prices are still higher than usual. Tried more dim sum specialties and would say they do okay with it. Some other places do it better. The shrimp dumpling was smaller than I'm used to and the filling lacked flavor. The crab roe soup dumplings were just okay. Jellyfish was okay and had crunch. Roast pork bun can be skipped. Theirs is steamed, filling is less than other spots and mostly bread versus roast pork but at least they use some lean meat. The sticky rice with chicken wasn't bad. My favorite was the hot pot chicken noodle soup. The flavors in this dish were really good and I liked the noodle in this dish. Super flavorful, tons of chicken and vegetables. Great combination. Service was quick and friendly.

this is a casual spot with delicious eats. for a casual, affordable spot, it nails it and that's why it gets 5 stars. fast, friendly service and reasonable prices. I tried the pork bun and the steamed veggie dumplings. both were really good, and I forgot to take a photo of the dumplings because I was enjoying myself too much.

What time do you begin dinner? Can I get beer to go with Groupon takeout voucher?

Dinner begin 5:00 pm , and you can’t takeout beer legally,

Can you accommodate allergies to nuts (peanuts and tree nuts)? Do you use peanut oil?

We used vegetable soybean oil

Are dogs allowed inside?

Yes

Is lunch special available on weekend?

Of course!

Any update on liquor license? I have a voucher that expires by November and don't see myself being able to use the whole thing on food alone.

Yes, we just had liquor license this week.

Is this BYOB? Can we bring our own beer and wine?

Hi. What do you mean?

Any gluten-free options?

There are! But candidly it is a little tricky given that our soy sauce has gluten. The celery lilies, mushrooms, and some of the soups. If you have a high gluten sensitivity, we may not be able to accommodate given everything is prepared in the same…

Are the mushroom soup dumplings vegan?

Yes they are!

Do they have soup dumplings without fish/shellfish/mushroom? The descriptions don't list ingredients on everything.

The original grandma’s soup dumplings only have pork. The crab roe (shell fish) and veggie soup dumplings (mushroom) have items that don’t fit the criteria. Grandma’s soup dumplings are worth a try, we hope to see you soon.

Do they have vegan options? My Chinese-American vegan friend is dying for Dim Sum options :)

Yes! Our soup dumplings and veg dumplings are vegan, the broth is made from mushrooms and agar agar.

Do they serve wine, beer or liquor?

When I asked they informed me that they will be getting it soon

We tried the pork dumplings in chili oil, the tea smoked duck with sticky rice, fragrant fish fillet, and sauteed spring beans. The pork dumplings in chili oil were my favorite, despite the sauce not really tasting anything like chili oil. It tasted more like peking duck sauce. The entrees were good, but didn't really stand out much to me. We were expecting duck with a bowl of sticky rice on the side, but were surprised to find sticky rice layered on top of duck. It was more sticky rice than duck, and came with some sort of sweet and sour sauce. The fragrant fish fillet was pretty mild in flavor, although the fish was cooked well. The sauteed green beans were pretty standard. All the dishes that were said to have one level of spice had no spice at all. The final bill came out to be around $40 per person after tip and tax, which I found expensive for what we got.

I was browsing for places with scallion pancakes and I came across this restaurant. I saw they had a scallion pancake beef rook which I'd never seen before. I had the roll on its own, which made for a light meal, but it can also be enjoyed as a large snack. It was a little greasy, which can be expected, but not sure if I'd get it again. I did think it was innovative though. The most impressive thing about the restaurant was actually the space. I came to pick up my food and was surprised to see this beautiful place. The outside is unassuming and nothing special but inside has the aesthetic of an old Shanghai restaurant. It's ornate and slightly quirky. It's also really big, bigger than I expected.
