No fuss, delicious food. The server helped me find a couple vegetarian options (fried rice so good and yummy dumplings). Definitely recommend for a casual hidden gem in the neighborhood. read more

Baodega - Dim Sum Near Me - New York, New York

The interior is nice and the service is perfectly fine. But in terms of their namesake soup dumplings I gotta say I'm not sure I really enjoyed any part of it. We tried each variation and the soup was bland, the skin was pretty thick, I didn't taste any crab and the meat was dry despite the soup. I'm not sure why they're rated well, unless you've never had a soup dumpling before? If you're looking for good soup dumplings and can pick anywhere in the city I'd look elsewhere. If you're having a serious soup dumpling craving, either here or excellent dumpling is your only shot in the neighborhood though. Or if you want a nice quiet date spot and maybe just want to have a drink or coffee it has a nice atmosphere. read more

We happened to be in Flatiron, craving Asian food and stumbled across this place on yelp. The reviews and pics looked good, so we gave it a go. It did not disappoint. The place was cute and clean. We started w/ 1 order each of the pan fried, pork and chicken soup dumplings and ended up ordering 2 more of the pan fried ones. They were so good. We also ordered the cucumbers, scallion and bacon pancake, crystal shrimp steamed dumplings and braised beef noodle soup. All were pretty good as well. I loved that each person was set up with their own sauces, I hate sharing lol. They also have a really good chili oil, but have to ask for it. The server/owner(?) was really nice and answered all of our questions. He never once rushed us and was very attentive. He even took our picture for us, which turned out pretty good haha. I would definitely go back. read more

Found the place via TikTok like many others. I took my parents and all of us loved it! We're all vegetarian so we had some veggie noodles, dumplings, green beans, and mapi tofu. My dad wasn't excited to have another mapo tofu until he tried it and said it was the best he'd ever had. Everything was delicious and came out very quickly. Very reasonably priced. I'll be back for sure. read more

I Love this place. The Shanghai traditional pan fried soup dumplings are amazing. Love the dipping sauce too. The pork fried rice has that Smokey delicious taste I love. The Mini Peking Duck Burgers are also excellent. Going to be a repeat customer whenever I come to NYC. I can't get good Chinese food back home. The service is also great. The owner is very friendly. Everyone is very nice. read more

As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the owner. He was the absolute SWEETEST and was SO good to us. The food was absolutely amazing and they were so quick to get it out to us! I got the fried dough, BBQ pork bun, and the shrimp and pork shiu mai. The fried dough was so chewy and soft at the same time and it was the best consistency. The BBQ pork bun had so much flavor--it wasn't too sweet nor was it too bland. The shrimp and pork shiu mai was so tender and chewy--it was wonderful!! I think I've found one of my new favorite dim sum spots! read more

The outdoor seating is beautiful. A ~must try~ is the pan fried soup dumplings (Shen Jian Bao). They were really juicy, and the flavor was so fresh and savory. We also got the crab/pork soup dumplings, were were delicious as well. The cold appetizers (cucumber salad and woodear mushroom salad) were tasty and tangy. The beef noodle soup was alright, not my favorite of the night. But the dumplings made it well worth the visit! Staff was really friendly and we got to talk to the owner about the food! read more

theres not a lot of good chinese food by flatiron so this spot is much beloved!! super cute & everything tastes home made! amazing service too, everyone was so kind! read more

I really wanted to like this place, and I'm happy that people are going now. That being said, the food isn't the best. The flavor isn't bad but the preparation was sloppy. We ordered the pan fried soup dumplings and there was old cooked scallion on it along w fresh scallion which indicated that it had been cooked earlier then heated again. As a result, the outside was very dry. Also, there was a tiny amount of meat inside. Even something simple like the wood ear mushrooms felt like they had been sitting out for too long as it was dry and the temperature was too warm. I know the owners read the reviews, and I want to say that the taste is good but if they improve their food prep it will be so much better. read more

Such a surprise / thought it would be too trendy with this name but authentic dumplings, fresh veggies, soup dumplings & sticky rice! Would visit again! read more

Great selection/variety of dumplings, although I thought the broth in the soup dumplings was a bit bland. Nice atmosphere, great service.

Stopped by here on a crisp fall day. They have a cute backyard with a few spread out tables- I sat here around noon on a weekday and had no wait. We ordered pork soup dumplings and the dry pot chicken. The dumplings were so fresh- I walked past one of the chefs making them as I walked in. The dough was just the right thickness, the soup filling was the perfect amount of savory, and the meat was flavored really well. What stood out for me the most was the dry pot chicken- the vegetables were extremely fresh (picked fresh from the market every day per the owner!), chicken was cooked to perfection, and the flavor was killer. Just the right amount of spice with a little bit of that numbing Szechuan chili sensation. The service was fast and attentive. The owner was extremely kind, telling us about the ingredients used to make these dishes. Definitely making this place one of my go-to's for pick up and delivery this winter. read more

We all thoroughly enjoyed the dishes we ordered. We got the pork soup dumplings, the bao soup dumplings, chicken corn soup, hot and sour soup, braised pork belly with rice, spicy chicken noodle soup, and another soup noodle dish. Food came out reasonably. Pretty crowded, waited about 30 minutes for a table. Good service. Pretty decent pricing depending on what you ordering. Party of 3 spent about 130.00 with tips. read more

Great service and good spot! Recommend it for a casual and cozy meal in the neighborhood

This is the best place for Chinese food in Flatiron. We got the soup dumplings and pan fried soup dumplings as well as the dry pot beef. Everything tasted great and was also reasonably priced. The owner (who also waits on the tables) is very kind and kept our teapot full throughout the meal. Will definitely be back! read more

So good!! dumpings are so good and very good service. overall 10000/10 its the best place u can find!!

This place is perfect, any time, any day. Beautifully presented dim sum, and so many options to choose from. We ordered 5-6 items - I highly recommend the homemade soup dumplings. You can taste the love and care that goes into those, believe me. The owner, who I believe took our order, was genuinely kind and very attentive. Everything came out at a great pace. I enjoyed every bite! Next time, we're trying the soup! read more

One star for the punny name and pretty much nothing else. Ordered delivery and mushroom medley noodle soup did not come with any noodles. The Pickled Cabbage Stewed Fish for $19.95 was 90% cabbage and maybe 10% fish and don't even get me started on the actual fish used. Just take a look at my picture and you'll see why I'm so disappointed. read more

Baodega is the only place on the East Coast I've found that has authentic Shanghainese pan fried soup dumplings. They are yeast leavened baos- super crispy bottoms, but... filled with soup like a soup dumplings. It's truly the best form of dumpling that exists- I grew up eating them all over shanghai and have been severely disappointed with the lack of them in the US. Several restaurants in Manhattan/Flushing have these on their menus- but none actually have soup/can accomplish the needed fine balance between porky soup/filling/fluffy Bao/crispy bottom. Highly encourage everyone to try these out- you won't find this perfection of a dumpling anywhere else in NYC. Eat them the same way you eat a soup dumpling- bite a small hole then slurp out the soup! read more

Big menu with plenty of delicious options to choose from. We stopped in for lunch and 2 out of the 3 of us got a lunch special and both were very happy. I ordered off the regular menu and was equally happy. Fair price, nice food selection and good taste can't really go wrong. read more

I was really disappointed with this place. I was looking forward to it after this place went viral but the standards were low and I am not sure if it is because the owner wasn't there. The baos were not hot, not a lot of soup inside and the skin was thick. If you see this, please train your staff to produce food of the same quality as you before it's too late! read more

Fantastic food with the nicest staff!! We stumbled upon Baodega and decided to check it out. Got their Pan-Fried Soup dumplings after a recommendation from the staff and it was innovative and so delicious. We also ordered the beef noodle soup and ribs dry pot, both which were super tasty, but the pot can get salty without rice. Wish I had pictures to share, but we couldn't wait to dig in! 5/5 will definitely be coming here again read more

the food here is amazing!! you can tell it is made with love :) the owner is also super sweet!

We stopped by here on a day when we were craving good baos. It was easy to get a table without having to book much in advance. The food was good, not great. The place appeared minimally staffed and the tables were in need of cleaning. I wouldn't say this is one of the best bao joints in Manhattan. read more

AMAZING I loves my experience here all the food is so great including the staff!! try everything!!

Ordinary at best. I was so excited to come here after having read an article calling their soup dumplings "near perfect," spoiler alert, it was far far far away from perfect. I guess if you like fusion food, you may like the food here, but every dish was disappointing for me. Service was ok but seemed like waiters were all rushing and running around at 8pm on a Saturday. Kitchen was backed up and very slow. We got our main entree and were basically half way done before the soup dumplings and appetizers came out. We wanted the Lion's Head Meat but were told that it was sold out. The waitress recommended the Huang Fei Hong Chicken, which is pieces of fried white chicken meat in the midst of hot peppers and peanuts. It was very salty and extra starchy to the point where it tasted like plastic. The vegetarian duck was a layer of oily tofu so crispy that you can't even tell it's tofu. Inside was maybe 3 pieces of mushroom and lots of carrots (seems like there's some cost cutting here?) The Farmhouse Wontons (which are basically thick skinned dumplings) came on a bed of overfried egg, it's an interesting combo but fell flat in flavor. The meat inside the soup dumpling (similar to the dumplings) tasted bland and basically dead (usually when not enough time is spent to mix/beat the meat to give it the chewy). The skin at the top of the folds are tough and thick. Honestly the only redeeming quality was that their white rice is pretty good and the decor is open and modern. read more

A must when you come to New York. The service was amazing. The food was incredible. I would recommend to everyone to try!

My friend text me to invite me to her birthday dinner at Baodega, a restaurant that I had surprisingly never heard of, being that it was in an area that I frequented.  This recent addition to the Chelsea/Flatiron area was very casual, yet possessed a modern, Asian flare.  Where many restaurants might have had a bar serving alcohol, theirs was brewing coffee and tea beverages.  The dining area offered spacious seating, including our long wooden table, perfect for the group of party attendees.  One of our friends had gifted the birthday girl a bottle of red wine, and since the place did not have a bar, I went to the counter and asked if we could have a wine opener to enjoy the bottle.  The server responded that they did not have a corkscrew, but that he could get me one, and he literally left the restaurant to obtain one from a nearby place.  It was so gracious and certainly appreciated! The birthday girl and I decided to take charge of the ordering and made selections for the entire group to share.  I think we did an excellent job, if I do say so myself!  The Shanghainese Cold Noodles arrived first and actually wound up being my favorite dish.  The cool strands of pasta were plated next to green beans and cucumbers, all topped with an egg, peanut sauce, and sesame oil.  The dish was left undone for us to blend ourselves.  The peanut sauce was rich and sweet, but still enabled us to recognize how fresh the noodles underneath really were.  I did not try the Scallion Pancake, but my friends loved that it included Bacon.  Somehow I had managed to sneak in a healthier option with an order of Steamed Mushroom and Vegetable Dumplings, though they wound up being rather bland and not memorable.  The Baodega Handmade Fried Dough that we had ordered never arrived, but we did not realize that until after the fact.  We also requested two versions of soup dumplings - the Traditional Shanghai Pork and the Grandma's Soup varieties.  The traditional were sphere-shaped and contained little to no soup.  They had been pan-fried, so they were crispy on the bottom, but the pork inside remained tender and flavorful.  I preferred Grandma's version, which had been steamed and contained a rich broth.   In terms of more substantial dishes, the Yangzhou Fried Rice had only been lightly fried and remained fluffy.  It included baby shrimp, scrambled egg, shredded pork, and green beans, making for a tasty blend indeed.  I also had convinced my friend to skip the Kung Pao and General Tso's Chicken dishes and go for the unfried Chicken and Broccoli instead.  The dish included large pieces of cooked garlic and was absolutely spectacular.  Even my friends enjoyed the healthier option, because each ingredient had been cooked just right, and the sauce had been well-crafted. With its vast menu, affordable prices (cost us each less than $25), and spacious dining area, Baodega was the perfect venue for our group celebration.  It was a terrific addition to the neighborhood and worthy of 3.5 stars. read more
