A delicious upscale restaurant with authentic grandma's cooking taste. 10/10 on location, food, service, decor, cleanliness, and experience. A must try restaurant in NYC. Went here randomly on a rainy Saturday for lunch and it was still packed -- but socially distanced tables, as well as masks on at all times by staff and even customers (except when eating). The owner came up to us and served us water and hot green tea right away. We asked him for menu recommendations and he suggested a few dishes, of which none disappointed. The recipes are of the owner's grandmother and has been in his family for 40+ years. We had a really nice chat with him, enjoyed our dining experience to the fullest, and left with full stomachs and fuller hearts. Definitely check this out if you're in NYC for a visit, enjoy fine dining at a reasonable price, or just someone who loves food. read more

Super delicious. While waiting to go to the Harry Potter store, we found this spot. The food was delicious and service was great. We sat right away since it was not too busy during the weekday, got our drinks and put our order in within 5 minutes of sitting. All of the food came out in a timely manner. We ordered a lot of food because everything looked delicious, and it was! To start, we ordered the crunchy wonton, the traditional pan fried dumplings, and the roast pork bun. The crunchy wonton were by far my favorite. They came with a spicy and savory sauce that elevated the taste. It was amazing! For the entree, we ordered the pork fried rice and the general tso's chicken. We shared these two meals. The general tso's chicken also came with white rice, although I wish the chicken was a bigger portion. I am in town visiting, and I will definitely be back here on my next trip! read more

I cant believe I havent written a review here yet, as I have been here multiple times already. Every time this place has just been dynamite. The most recent time, we ordered two orders of the OG soup dumplings, char siu pork noodle soup and two coffees. In the past we have also gotten the pan fried soup dumpling. The soup was good, the roasted pork was not under seasoned which can happen sometimes. The coffee was pretty good as well. But the real star, was the dumplings both the pan fried soup and the regular soup dumplings, they were extraordinary. The pan fried soup dumplings, the meat was delicious and the soup soaked into the dumpling and it just tasted absolutely delicious. The XLB soup was absolutely incredible, and the whole meal was absolutely delicious. In terms of service, everyone was so nice and it was very efficient. Because of baodega, I no longer have travel very far for amazing XLB. Will continue going over and over again and would recommend this to anyone. read more

A tad on the pricier side for Chinese food, but excellent service and a quick turnaround on orders makes for a fast, hot, delicious meal at Baodega. Recommending their Peking duck burger for anyone who wants their tastebuds satisfied. These two buns are stacked with crispy skin and savory, tender duck. The bun is made in-house and still piping hot and fresh as the steaming tray comes out. While the soup dumplings don't quite have the transparent, smooth skin of DTF, they are still made with care. Beef noodle soup on the side, if you're still feeling peckish. read more

In hindsight, I wish I would've just gotten 10 orders of the spicy wontons in chili oil. They stole the show and had so much flavor! We also ordered General Tso's which was a little better than your neighborhood spot. Tasted a little fresher, and served with really delicious broccoli and white rice. The pork bun was good and had a nice, fluffy texture, but the filling was very minimal. The soup dumplings were another favorite. The filling was tasty but nothing overly spectacular. The dan dan noodles were not the flavor I was hoping for. I had previously had these at a Sichuan restaurant and these fell a little short of my hopes. Moral of the story: Order LOTS of wontons in chili oil with maybe 1 or two other things. read more

Great place in NYC if you're looking for good quality, tasty, n authentic dim sum w/o having to go all the way down to Chinatown. This place was delicious, but I'm giving it 4 stars because the veggie spring rolls were more roll than they were veggie and they were way too fried and oily. Cute little spot for a quick Asian bite though :) read more

*Mealpal Review* Baodega is a newcomer to MealPal so I decided to try it one day for lunch. The meal was ready when I got there which was a plus. I was actually surprised to see how cool the restaurant was, especially when I saw a glimpse of the outdoor seating area. I took a peek of it and also noticed they have the Chinatown ice cream factory product ready to be served. I ordered the beef mushroom onion with rice. The portion was adequate and the flavors were good. I would have been happier if the ratio between the beef and onions were adjusted so there was less onion and chewing gum to chew afterwards. I would be keen to order something else from here again to try our other flavours. The restaurant has only been opened for 2 months so all the decor and furnishing is new, clean and modern. read more

Inconsistent quality, some of the dishes taste like they were premade/precooked and they just microwaved them right before serving to us

Hidden gem tucked away in Midtown. Food 5/5 I'm going to be honest, the food is sort of catered more to the western palate but it still holds its asian flavor. I love their take on the Xia Long Boa. Traditionally steamed, these ones were pan fried. The shuimai however was a bit of a let down Ambiance 5/5 Beautiful rustic setting indoor and great garden patio out at the back. Well distanced. Service 5/5 Friendly and helpful owner. He is also the host and the waiter. Wore a mask and practiced all the covid protocols read more

I got the make at home soup dumplings. The owner was so sweet and made sure I knew how to steam them right. He was really friendly and helpful. I made them at home following his directions and they came out perfectly!!! I was craving Chinese food in Chelsea (couldn't make it down to Chinatown) and found Baogeda nearby. I saw online that they also had meals that you could cook yourself at home. So great for these quarantine times! I placed an order online for pickup. I arrived a little bit early for pick up so I decided to order a pork bun while I waited as a "snack" - it was huge, and delicious! Definitely not your normal dim sum pork bun size, so be prepared. I ordered the mapo tofu (which was already fully prepared, heated it up at home), which was delicious and pretty spicy! They are definitely not joking around with those peppercorns. For the cook-at-home kit, I ordered kung pao chicken and some scallion pancakes. The chef came out and explained that the ingredients were raw and gave instructions on how to make the dish. So nice for him to take the time to personally give me cooking directions! Everything came frozen, so you can throw it back in the freezer and save it for a couple of days - except the sauce, I didn't want it to become a block of ice so I kept that in the fridge. The kung pao chicken is pretty straightforward: cook the raw chicken thoroughly first, then cook the veggies, then stir in the sauce. Pretty simple! For the scallion pancakes, the chef said to pan fry each side for about a minute and keep flipping them over and over until cooked. By continuously flipping it over, it gets fluffier and airier, making it crispier and lighter. I didn't really get it until I saw it in action where they puff up as you pan fry them! Very cool tip - thanks, Chef! read more

I decided to try this place because it came up on Groupon one day when I was browsing deals. Seemed like an interesting spot, offering a drink each, three dim sum plates, and an entree to share. I think the deal was for somewhere around $50 but there was also a deal on Groupon which made it less, so... why not, right? It was a very nice and more "takeout" looking place, fairly empty, though I saw a lot of to go orders and delivery. We ordered our food and drinks, which didn't take too long to do. The server didn't allow for dim sum substitutions, which I get it - but my sub would have cost less than the dim sum. The dim sum was fine, nothing to really write home about. I liked my dumplings, but didn't care for their spring rolls or shumai. The entree is listed as "family style" but that was pretty misleading. The rice portion was so clearly for one person and we ordered the general Tao's chicken - which - sure, if you were nibbling at it could have been for two, but not comfortably. We weren't really overly pleased with the food or experience overall. I would have honestly preferred takeout. The food was just okay. I was mostly disappointed with the portions above all else since we did end up having to order more. Not a really great Groupon. Takeout would have been less than half the price, more food, and I wouldn't have expected an actual nice evening out. read more

Amazing food! Very authentic and fresh taste. I would highly recommend! Service is very attentive as well.

Arrived and ordered the Dry Pot Chicken lunch special. Chicken was undercooked (pink I thought it was pork) and lacked flavors besides being coated in Chili Crisp oil. After visiting the Harry Potter store, we Yelped Asian food close by and were led here. We were a little apprehensive because it was a little slow when we walked in, but we are so glad we decided to stay. The pan fried soup dumplings are some of the best I've had (we killed 3 orders!). We also got the regular soup dumplings (pork and chicken), shrimp dumplings, braised beef noodle soup, scallion pancakes, and the cucumber salad and they all had really great flavor. The cucumbers were addicting, I think I can live on those and the pan fried dumplings! We ended with the sesame rice balls, which were served boiled which I've never had before. It was a little strange at first, but the flavor of the black sesame filling and texture of the sticky mochi turned out to be really delicious. The man serving was super nice and attentive. I definitely recommend this place! read more

Wow, further downhill. I don't know how this place has good reviews. I forgot I ordered from here before but nothing has changed. I got the xiao long baos for takeout and they look and tasted like the tiny frozen soup dumplings that are 20 in a bag for $5. The vinegar sauce was also expired. It smelled and tasted like alcohol! Absolutely horrifying. read more

Loved the authentic delicious baos and the service was so sweet. during my visit to New York. Will definitely come back.

Great place for fresh dim sum and friendly service. I loved the chicken soup dumplings, they were so fresh and full of flavor. The sweet and sour ribs were tender, meaty, and in a delicious light sauce. I'd love to try more of their dim sum, and will return. Their restaurant is Covid-friendly, with large glass doors that open to leave the restaurant with three walls and one with fresh outside air. Service was very fast and friendly. Prices are a little on the high side, but I can tell this restaurant uses quality ingredients so it is definitely worth it. read more

We walked by this place on Saturday afternoon. Had chicken soup dumplings, Shanghai pan fried dumpling and Chicken dry pot. Server recommended us Shanghai pan fried dumpling and his explanation was quite long and we were very skeptical until we put the dumpling in our mouth. Nicely brown color dough on the bottom and it was thin but thick enough to cover meat and soup. That was AMAZING!!! great flavor, and texture was starting from a bit of crunchiness and soft fried dough fill in your mouth. I finished one plate just by myself and every bite I enjoyed. Will come back again!!! read more

It's a really overrated restaurant. For starter, it's very overpriced. The sesame ball is $9 for one! They cut that in half to appear more, but it was a sad over fried over greased with bean paste that's barely there. I had high expectations for their signature bao but not only it's tiny, with a size that's slightly bigger than the soup spoon and with meat that's barely there. The size should be twice as big with meat stuffed the whole thing. I definitely feel cheated on. I should have known due to its location. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Not sure if I made stellar order choices (heh heh) or if everything happens to be super good!!! I came here with my boyfriend and we ordered the soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, sweet and sour ribs, and chicken dry pot. Baodega really surprised me -it was a pleasant experience from the food to the nice decor and calming music. I can't decide which dish I loved most: *the pork soup dumpling had pretty great flavor, not too much or too little soup, and I loved the texture of the wrapper (soft but not thin) *the sweet and sour pork ribs were fantastic -succulent, great serving size, and packed with flavor *the chicken fry pot was fiery -literally. Great presentation and filled with a good mix of veggies and really moist and well marinated chicken cubes. Also, there's a cool craft coffee area in the front of the shop that also serves matcha. Give this place and go and definitely order at least one of the above! You'll love your experience. Plus, prices are fair and the people are nice read more

Authentic and amazing! 10/10 would recommend this place to anyone! Loved the atmosphere and the cozy vibes!

I came here with three friends with a Yelp reservation on a Sunday night. I was pretty excited about it since I've seen it packed on Friday nights. This was honestly one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in a long time from a strictly food perspective. I hate giving restaurants poor ratings, but I truly don't understand how this restaurant has 4 stars. Yelp completely missed the mark on this one. This restaurant offered below-average, small-portioned, expensive-for-what-was-offered American Chinese food. I honestly love American Chinese food, but when a restaurant is advertising itself as offering, authentic food, that's what I expect to get. What blows my mind is that the menu actually does contain select authentic dishes, but they might as well not have bothered offering them because of how badly they butchered it. I would go as far as to say I found the food offensive because of the taste and price. The scallion pancakes had bacon in it, which I thought was weird. It was also super bland. How does one mess it up that badly? It's effectively just salty fried flour. The mapo tofu was okay, but it's a dish that's nearly impossible to mess up. The stir fry noodle was okay, in-line with the type you'd get at a take-out any Chinese restaurant in NYC, but the portion size was pretty small. The sauteed string beans were bland, not fried deeply enough to compared to every other string bean dish I've ever had, and $12.95 for a few bites. The dry pot with fish was very average. We tried a few other dishes, but I guess I've chosen to forget parts of my dining experience. I'm sad that the food didn't meet my standards. I can't even begin to imagine what the coffee is like here... Silver linings: -I do appreciate that there were a decent amount of vegetarian options. We got the mushroom and vegetable soup dumplings, which I actually thought were decent and the best thing we tried. -The service was excellent, and all the employees were super sweet and on top of everything. The restaurant is spacious and the ambiance was nice, but the food was not worth the time or money. There is far, FAR better Chinese food in NYC. Don't waste your calories on this. read more

My friend planned to go to this restaurant because her friend recommends it. On that note, my review is based on my experience. When we got there they sat us by door, its was freezing so we had to ask to move. It's took a long while to get our food, yet it tasted like it was microwaved. That's how the texture of the food tasted in my mouth. We ordered pork bun and a soup each. My fried found a hair in the pork bun but didn't have the nerve to tell them. So here it is. The serve while pouring out water it s splattered all over the soup. Not a good experience at all, although it will remain embedded in my brain. I have to learn to speak up when I'm the payee. read more

Baodega is an interesting Chinese restaurant that specializes in Shanghai soup dumplings (Xiaolongbao or XLB for short) and other dim sum and dumplings. The name Baodega is a play of the quintessential New York corner store -- particularly in Hispanic neighborhoods -- the word bao which are steamed buns from northern China. The food is generally good. The soup dumplings (Grandma's Soup Dumplings) taste good, but the dough is very thick and there are better soup dumplings elsewhere. The Peking Duck little burgers are excellent. read more

While nominally there was outdoor seating, it was so enclosed that I'm not sure it really qualifies as outdoors for ventilation... I'm very picky about my xiaolongbao. These (9.5$) had decent flavor, but the skin on top was too thick. Shengjianbao (9.95$) had great juicy meat, but not enough salt made it a bit too bland. Nice to satisfy a craving though. Hot pot pickled cabbage fish (24.95$) was very flavorful and the fish perfectly tender. The soup spoons were way too thick and large for the bowls, making it oddly difficult to eat soup from the bowl? In comparison to the slightly undersalted xlb and sjb, this was quite salty. The weirdly standout item? The rice that came with the fish! It was very fragrant, noticeably fresh. Overall, the food was decent, but quite pricey. I would probably only go back if I had a craving. read more

#The time I went, it was super super slow. I think I waited about 30 minutes for my dumplings. And when they came out, the server accidentally gave them to the #old couple next to me who sat down 20 minutes after me. They were about to eat them before I stopped them. And it turns out they didn't even order dumplings! One guy who was waiting for his #MealPal for about 30 minutes, decided to have his to stay instead to go, because it took so long. And the old couple next to me thought he just sat down and got his food pretty quickly. And they complained. I tried to tell them he had been waiting for a long time. But I don't think #butting-in helped any. It didn't make them feel any better. I thought #Chinese food was quick. read more
