Truly an incredible breast fast place. Best food and good coffee! Tidy and clean place.

Need to come back and dine in. Ordered an iced latte and it's a solid cup of coffee. This cafe is more of a dine-in brunch place more than a to-go coffee shop. The space is nice and they close a bit early. read more

First visit was okay; second was terrible. For our second visit there were six of us and a dog. The dog wasn't allowed inside (obviously), so my wife sat at a table while I waited for food. She was told to leave because you must order before sitting. She walked around the block while we waited in line for 25 minutes. At the till they asked our party size (6) and said groups of six incur a 20% auto-gratuity. I said we were four separate groups and wanted to pay separately. They insisted we pay together with the auto-gratuity. Auto-gratuity is fine, but six is small for that, especially when they don't take table orders. You wait in line, they drop off food, yet you can't sit until everyone has ordered. As Canadians we'd sort payments later. They said "we're a small business," and the till worker gave far too much attitude for a take-out coffee shop with auto-gratuity and assigned seating. We finally agreed to pay together. They checked for an outside table. Two guys sat at a "for three or more" table with no one enforcing the rule. The worker returned and said no tables were available. I said we'd take it to go. We got our coffee and left feeling negative. Our friends also ordered to-go sandwiches, and were told it would be a 40 minute wait. While waiting they sat down. When it was ready the server held their food hostage until they stood up to leave (can't sit at a table for a to go order). Cute atmosphere, terrible everything else. Don't expect a pleasant experience. read more

Line was about 10 minutes long to get our order in. Ordered a breakfast sandwich, and a burrito. Waited 1 hour and 5 minutes to get the food. The table to our left and right got their food before us even though they sat down 30 minutes after us. When we told a worker, they said they had to make the burrito on the fly for us, even tho the tables next to us got their burritos just fine. They apologized and gave us a free chip for a small drink on the next visit. Absolutely laughable customer service, and the food was at best, Mid. Would not recommend unless you like waiting over 60 minutes for basic ass breakfast food, while having to fill your own water glasses out of a faucet. Won't ever get our business again. read more

I'm glad this place is doing well and seems to have a lot of locals dining there on a regular basis It was just not for me. Service was a little bit with an attitude. In addition, they are not very accommodating nor vegan friendly. read more

As a breakfast burrito connoisseur, this was definitely top 3. It was SO good, and I was happy to find it wasn't just egg. the rice was crispy and there was a perfect amount of avocado and cheese. I would drive the hour and a half to get another in a heartbeat. The spanish latte was a bit underwhelming. Just tasted like a regular one with a bit of cinnamon. Cookie was yummy! read more

Tried the breakfast burrito and smoothie. Really good and unique hot sauce provided added an extra kick.

Wasted a good portion of my day here yesterday. The burrito and sandwich were good, but I could have walked to the store and made it faster. Guy next to us watched his family eat then when his food finally arrived he asked for his to go. Another table got a smoothie after their food was long gone. We moved inside after our wait time crested over 1 hour. Lady next to us watched her sandwich get cold as she politely waited for her companion's food to arrive. When it did finally arrive she asked for hers to go. The food is good, The place feels like a Portlandia episode with surly servers and comically long wait times. There were 3 or 4 people working on the kitchen. They need a Gordon Ramsey makeover on their process. Some pre work on the kitchen might reduce order times from 75 minutes. read more

While the location is quite small and that can lead to weird experiences and reviews like recent one from Burnaby visitors who had a hard time navigating the seating and ordering process, Banter sells what is hands down the best burrito in Bellingham if not the entire state or region. I've never had it without egg, avocado, and bacon inside or on the side - so keep that in mind given the options - but they have a way of doing even the basic rice/beans/sauce in there quite nicely. It's so good I've contemplated trying to get a job there for as long as it takes to learn how to make this. I would not go to Banter if you are a larger or differentiated group looking to sit back and enjoy some space and sociality because it's just too constrained. This is a small hip spot for fancy drinks and good breakfasty bites that just happens to have struck gold with a single dish that has few peers. read more

Such a cute spot! The food was good but a little expensive. I enjoyed my brewed coffee, although it was a little on the acidic side. Little critiques aside, I'd totally go back! read more

Delicious breakfast. I had the chef's breakfast which included eggs (poached or scrambled), avocado, potato's, tomatoes, and thick bacon. I also got their spiced yam oat latte which is a spin off from a pumpkin spice latte. It was actually very nice. Similar to pumpkin but not. I enjoyed it for a holiday drink. Service is like a cafe, order your food and they bring it to you. There's self served water and cute indoor decor. read more

Love this spot! There was definitely a wait line but well worth it. The food is awesome and it's a nice patio and atmosphere. Amazing coffee and matcha drinks as well. The breakfast sandwich, burrito, chefs breakfast, and black sesame matcha were standouts. read more

First time here--walked past dozens of times--Friday 11 am. Ordering is via line after immediately walking in. You place your order at the counter and then select a table. We immediately sat down after ordering with 4 tables available. Within 10 minutes the green power smoothly was brought to the table. While waiting for the food order I'm trying to ignore the terrible 2020s pop auto-tune garbage music, but I digress. Sweet potato fries showed up 17 minutes later. It's as if they used two whole large sweet potatoes--fries are enough for two people. The smoothy is gone. Not sure the process for water--I can see the station where water is placed into bottles but no glasses. Found the last glass around to the right and after getting some water more glasses were stacked. Food arrived 21 minutes after ordering. The burrito was fantastic and the poached egg my wife said was perfect. Not bad. By the time we finished, 11:47 am, the line was nearly out the door. Definitely we would not come here with such a crowd--early is better. We may or may not be back. read more

Banter has an unusual and inefficient seating system--everyone waits in the same line for both dine-in and takeout. If there's no available seating when you reach the front, you're placed on a waitlist and asked to step aside, which creates overcrowding near the bar. Once a table opens up, you return to the front to order before being seated. While waiting, I was offered a coffee, but they completely forgot my order. I had to remind them twice--once after 20 minutes, then again another 20 minutes later. One particularly frustrating detail: despite a long line of customers waiting for tables, the bar seating was reserved exclusively for employees to eat their meals. As for the food, I ordered the crunchy chicken salad and a breakfast sandwich. The chicken on the salad was disappointingly dry, and the salad itself was underdressed. The breakfast sandwich lacked flavor, though the hot sauce (which was delicious) helped. Overall, the food didn't feel worth the price--maybe that's just inflation, but still. Would I return? Probably not. read more

Following the recommendation of a friend, I took an out-of-town business associate to Banter for an afternoon coffee...and cookies. Our first time at Banter was the beginning of a patronage of this amazing breakfast/lunch spot!!Having read the menu before our visit, I boldly ordered the burrito and it certainly measured up to all the previous reviews. My husband enjoyed the classic breakfast bowl with scrambled eggs. Next time out, he'll do poached eggs for sure. The "Hawt" sauce is a tasty house creation & welcome addition to our entrees. Black coffee & a mocha completed our meal. The friendly staff made the time spent there even more pleasant. Menu change up on classic brekky- would have been good to inform customer ahead- not a fan!

First time here and I loved it. I ordered the Classic Brekky which came with amazing sourdough toast, perfectly poached eggs, avocado, and grilled tomatoes all with a little sprinkle of dill and cilantro. My boyfriend ordered the Banter Burrito and it was DELICIOUS. We added some of the Banter hot sauce to our meals and it might possibly be the best hot sauce i've ever had, and i'm not even a "hot sauce person". It was labeled as 3 out of 5 spiciness. For my drink, I ordered an iced Spanish latte, which was also delicious. It wasn't too bitter or too sweet so it was a great medium. The only downside is they don't have a LOT of space, so the line to order runs directly next to a handful of tables. I would say it also took a good amount of time for the food to come out (maybe 20-25 mins) however, not only were they really busy, but I don't mind the wait when that means the food is more fresh and they take better care of their ingredients! It was well worth the wait. I didn't remember to take a picture of my food before I ate it unfortunately read more

This place was one of my favorite spots in the entire United States of America. Incredibly decorated, incredible coffee, incredible food. Literally the best breakfast burrito I have ever had in my life. So good that I felt compelled to tell one of their awesome team members. We could've stayed there for hours and just chilled. If you are in the area, do not miss this place! If I didn't live in North Carolina, I would be here every week. I love Banter forever. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and how much they cared about dietary restrictions. They had amazing GF muffins that day and we were lucky to get the last two :) they used polenta which I think is a much healthier alternative to rice & oat flour. Coffee was amazing -- what's funny is that they use Makeworth coffee beans and they make a better latte than Makeworth actual coffee shop lol. I appreciate the compostable cups to go as well. Sorry for bad photos, I couldn't wait to try it :) read more

This place wins for most entitled and lazy staff. Let me paint the scene, line of 15 people waiting to order counter style. The order taker leaves after each order to bus a table, tripling the wait time. Besides that, there are other employees just standing around on their phones, and chatting together. It was a smear in the face as the line grows longer and longer and there seems to only be one person working as the others just play in your face. It is beyond tacky and unprofessional to have staff eating behind the order counter while there is a hungry, upset line waiting. Help your counter during rush, or go to your staff quarters. Tacky and entitled. Then, get this. They have a "specialty drink" that they didn't even have the ingredients for. They were out of cold brew, but refused to give a discount even though they were missing the main ingredient. Their solution you may ask? Just add more cream and ice! How about do something for the customer as they just waited 45 minutes for your counter because of your laziness? If you think order 1 to-go burrito and a coffee at a counter cafe would take anything less than 1.5 hours, you'll be sadly mistaken. Unfortunate, because this was a damn good burrito, but will never have it again. read more

This was a really cozy breakfast spot. I really liked the decor, and the staff was friendly. The Burrito I ordered was delicious and the house hot sauce(habanero pineapple) went with it very nicely. I requested my burrito without brown rice and the staff was happy to accommodate. The only issue for me was the price. They were running a Monday deal on coffee at $1 each, my wife and I each got a coffee and a burrito and ended up spending 50 dollars! read more

Every time I'm up in Bellingham, it's my go-to place for lunch or breakfast. Everything is delicious. Never disappoint s.

These were definitely delicious but felt kinda brushed off since they ran out of mushrooms and added an impossible patty instead without warning us. I try not to consume impossible meat because of how deeply processed it is. So wonder why we didn't get asked if the change was ok. We also noticed people that came after us got the same thing as we did and they got their food first with the mushrooms. So wonder what that was about. My boyfriend felt weirded out that they got their food first and felt a little discriminated. Kinda sad cause this was for vegan week & we were definitely treated less than. I guess beggars can't be choosers. The vegan latte was super delicious too. Wished the service was as great as well. read more

Bomb. Best breakfast in town. Order anything, it's all delicious! Come early to get a table.

What a terrific little place. The drinks were wonderful. I loved Strawberry Fields Forever especially. The Espresso Martini was a nice accompaniment to the scrumptious Sticky Date Cake. Pork Belly was wonderful, and I was crazy for the Spiced Cauliflower. While I like cauliflower generally, what made this so special was the crunchy topping with red chili peppers. Our servers were wonderful and informative. I very much liked the ambiance--a lot of white, lots of lamps and loads of plants. read more
