Well, this was a fun surprise! I'd never heard of the Back Door. A friend brought me and another friend here, with a special recommendation for Dakota who, purportedly, can whip up magic merely upon your mood. Dakota was not there, but Makenzie was--so we gave her a Dakota-style challenge which made all of us so happy. Out she comes after a while with a pretty white teacup. Minutes later a pretty white teapot arrives with a smoked concoction of clove, coffee liquor, rye, biscotti liquor (?) and amaro--something like that. It was lovely--and I don't even care that much for coffee! One of my friends had a drink that I never knew the name of, but it was light and refreshing, and our in-the-know friend had a lovely glass of absinthe. The place was fun--all lavender lighting and black-light or something--a variety of seating options. The drink menu was fascinating, not only for the choices, but for how they paired things up. Sometime in 2018, I dropped into the Back Door since it looked comfortable, cozy and had been mentioned favorably by local friends. I've been a fan ever since. While I don't frequent bars and lounges often, I have to admit the delicious drinks, attractive ambience and friendly service have enticed me to decide this is my favorite go-to place in town when I want a craft cocktail. Or two. The menu features inventions across the board, and of course they'll make anything you ask for. But it's fun trying their own unique flavors, and I'm always delighted with what they can do. Sometimes I'm surprised and even pleasantly educated. I'm looking forward to sometime soon when their menu will feature new items . I stopped in several nights ago before many people arrived and thoroughly enjoyed the smooth Christmas jazz playing in the background. Holiday decor accented the room and added more festive lighting to the usual attractive atmosphere. Service was as always excellent, and again I sampled a menu item that introduced me to at least one new flavor and aroma, nicely complementing the others it was blended with. I was both intrigued and happy to have tried the cocktail. Always a pleasure to kick back and chill at the Back Door. I had a great time here right before Christmas when some friends suggested this place. They were having a special "cocktail adventure " event and it was amazing! They made mini cocktails riffing on holiday classics and there was a cool story with different endings depending on the choices your party made in the story. We had such an incredible cocktail experience at Back Door this weekend! Small, trendy cocktail bars can be intimidating, but we felt right at home as soon as we walked into this hidden gem next to (attached to?) Rumors Cabaret. We were greeted right away and told we could sit wherever we like. We opted for the bar itself and I'm so glad we did! Both bartenders were incredibly welcoming, kind and helpful but Dakota really went above and beyond to make our experience what it was. Their cocktail menu is quite wordy, so he offered to make us something based on each of our taste preferences. He made a peach drink akin to a spritz for my girlfriend and a tequila-based floral drink for me. Both hit our preferred flavor profiles pretty much dead on! It's clear that Dakota and his colleagues really love what they do, and understand that a cocktail bar means more than just a drink. We even got to taste and offer insight on something he's working on for the spring menu! All in all Back Door is cozy, quaint and comfortable. I felt it was truly a quintessential cocktail bar experience. You're sure to be well taken care of and I wish this place the best! read more

Not only is their menu super diverse and interesting, but you can put your bartender to the test by asking them to make you a delicious surprise! Amy is one of my favorite bartenders I have ever met! She was super knowledgeable and introduced me not only to Fin, but a brand that is now my favorite! The vibe is intimate and sexy without being too serious. The drinks overall are out of this world! Yes they are a little more pricey than other places, but they are all specially curated by the season. I didn't get a chance to really meet Dakota behind the bar but his drinks spoke volumes! I used to go to rumors with friends when I went to college in Bellingham in the 90s. I was a little taken by surprise how much the town has changed when I went back to visit for alumni weekend. Highly gentrified. Stopped in here for a reprieve and was surprised. Felt bad just ordering a margarita after I realized it was an artisanal cocktail bar. I final realized and was introduced to Frenet Branco and all of the creations Dakota had created. Sweet bartenders, comfortable ambience, amazing drinks. I was sad all my old haunts were gone or much changed into something that felt like a trendy big city instead of a white-trash/hippy college town but this bar made up for it with a welcoming and delightful experience. read more

The reason this bar is getting 3 stars instead of 1 is because the bartender was delightful! She offered to create a drink for me, which was fun & different - the drink was good, an interesting concoction. But not fantastic & not much alcohol. My husband had a well drink made with some kind of grapefruit drink instead of grapefruit juice. The atmosphere was not comfortable for us - just not our style - white & plastic & stark & stiff. But the real turn-off was the odor of mold that was prevalent. Not sure where that was coming from. We won't be back, just wasn't our kind of place. read more

Cut off after ordering one cider for $7 because I was "slurring" my speech. English is not my first language and beyond that I do have a speech impediment. This was embarrassing for me as it was in front of my business colleague. I know they have a job to do, but they need to understand that all types of diversity exists in the world. I surely will not go back or recommend friends to go there. Not many people in there and how they stay open is beyond me. This is a place with pricey drinks, no people, a very squeaky bar stool (that makes you question your weight), and a try too hard bartender/speech therapist. The only reason I am giving two stars is because there are places in Thailand with even worse bathrooms. Yes the personal toilet was the better highlight of our experience. read more
