Finally, in a sea of bubble tea, I have my preferred drink option: limeade. I'm just more of a sour acidic refresher type of guy, so whenever my gf is in the mood for bubble tea, I'm left stranded with something thicker than what I'm in the mood for-- but not anymore! I made it a point to have their Crispy Pork Banh Mi before writing a review and while I thought I'd fall in love with it, it's good but not my taste. I was imagining more of a batter fried pork strips situation, a more westernized method of frying meats, but it was the style of pork chunks that's hyper crispy and puffy at the top and layered with gelatinous fat. It was tasty for what it was and not greasy, just not my cup of tea. It's a particular style of pork-- I'd google "heo quay" if you wanna see what I'm talking about. Also I've noticed it's popular with Hispanic males-- I think it has to do with the gristly fat texture. I guess we share that cultural preference. Yay world. I did however fall head over heels for their classic Banh mi. Heavy on the pate which I love, and a fluffy crispy bread, with the right meat-to-bread ratio. My gf took a bite not expecting much and her expression was pure surprise and delight. It's her favorite place to get a Banh mi for the bread now and I'd have to agree. It's a very reliable representation of what makes a Banh mi stand out from other sandwiches. And then there's the vempanadas. It's short for "Viet empanadas" and arguably what made them blow up. My mom made a lot of these growing up and my mom is regarded as the best cook out of like 8 kids and their children, so I like to think I have experience in this matter, and it's tastier than my mom's. To be fair, it's made fairly differently-- my mom makes it with a flakey filo-doughy crust and TBD has a softer more pliable dough-- think corn tortilla vs flour tortilla. I personally like flour tortillas more and you can fight me on that one. The filling is also more savory and rich than my mother's and the little quail egg inside is such welcomed treat. My mom's fillings are more meatball like and TBD's is pastier. Fun fact: this dish has origins tying it to France; the original dish is pate-chaud. If you google that too, you can see the evidence of a flakey texture. I will say, the first time I had it was more flavorful and I think the egg was missing the second time. And lastly I want to talk about the thing keeps me crawling back-- the ches (pudding soup). I've always had a disinterest in Vietnamese che growing up because my western palate always demanded MORE SUGAR but as I age, my tastes demand more subtlety. Che is a general term for a kind of dessert soup, with some sort of ingredient like a bean or jello as the focus and a sweetened liquid; I know "soup" is a bit of a turn off but it's really the closest English term we have. Think more like milk in cereal or melted ice cream. Is there a term for the milk in cereal? Anywho, the che ba mau is the most popular and beginner friendly, it's a mix of 3 sweet ingredients like mung bean, red bean, Pandan jelly in like coconut milk. If you're Filipino, it's the Vietnamese equivalent to Halo Halo. But what's cool about TBD is they have different kinds of lesser known ones I'm currently having fun exploring. There's a mung bean one with a thicker sweet cream on top-- reminds me pie filling. And right now I'm about to dig into a Pandan jelly, grass jelly, in coconut milk, peanuts, and shaved ice. It's a fun ass summer drink dessert. I highly recommend if you're looking for something different and refreshing this summer. read more

Special is the traditional bahn mi and the sandwich was expected. Empanada and fried banana were good but not my cup of tea. There is a pandan grass jelly drink - a definite must! Everyone was friendly and service was pretty easy and fast. The place is small, kind of like a miniature food hall. Nice little banh mi shop. Great customer service. Lemongrass beef banh mi 8/10 Soft fresh bread. Tender, savory beef. Nicely picked shredded veggies. Iced Vietnamese Coffee 8/10 This is a very strong, thick Viet coffee. It has deep dark Cafe Dumont coffee flavor with sweet thick condensed milk. Roughly the equivalent of 4 espresso shots. Vempanada 8/10 This is a very filling, fully stuffed empanada including lots of meat and a quail egg. The outer skin is crispy and relatively thin. I prefer adding sauce to balance the heavy savory flavors and thick meat texture. Crispy pork banh mi 7/10 This type of pork is the Siu Yuk type (roasted whole pig). It has chewy, meaty pork, fatty pieces, thick roasted skin. I think it needs the matching sauce though. Special Banh Mi 7/10 This pate is strong in iron flavor from the liver etc used to make it. We went here a few weekends ago in Flushing to Bahn Mi TBD. My husband loved Bahn Mi and was excited to try a new place because more great food places are popping up. The Bahn Mi was average. Nothing too special about it, however he did make a few comments about how the Bahn Mi was not the way it is usually made and a different bread was used. Came in during busy lunch hour. There was a bit of a wait in line as customers lunch orders were delayed. There were three people working the small kitchen; Owner was there and greeted regular customers waiting a long the wall for their orders. I ordered their signature Banh mi special and a Vempanada (stuffed beef with quail egg). The wait for these two items were about 20mins. Once I got my order, realized the store only gave me half a bahn mi-whilst I paid for a large sandwich. Staff took my order back and added the other half of the purchased item and returned it back to me. The sandwich tasted good, though the Vempanada lacked flavor and felt bland. Banh Mi TBD, takes up the first stall, right in the front window, which used to be a bubble tea place. Onto the food! Tried the chicken sandwich. Their homemade pate is super good! The chicken is shredded and covered in sauce. Personally, I'd prefer chicken chunks. Shredded tends to be rather salty. Could used more carrot radish slaw. Other places really pack it in there. Otherwise, taste is good overall. What really makes the sandwich is the homemade pate. I want more of it! If you need more carrot slaw, you could ask for more. Their recommended sandwich is the pork chop. Haven't tried it yet. They also sell homemade empanadas. They seem pretty small. There is only one flavor: sweet potato, beef and cheese or without cheese. This flavor profile didn't interest me, so haven't tried it. The vempanada aka Vietnamese empanada was really good and really unique. It was filled with pork, Japanese yam, an egg, and garlic and onions. It was super garlicky, which I love as a garlic lover. Items we've had include: - Lemongrass Beef, Full Sandwich: $13.99 with tax and cash discount. This is our favorite sandwich from Bánh Mì TBD. The sandwich uses beef cutlets, compared with the strips of meat in the other sandwiches. The beef seems to be flavored with a five-spice blend in addition to lemongrass. That combined with a layer of pâté and daikon and carrot slaw makes for a tasty bite. - Grilled Pork, Half Sandwich: $6.70; $7.00 with tax and cash discount. OK, uses strips of pork belly so there are chunks of fat in the sandwich. Slightly bigger than your average ones at nha trang/pho best/pho bang etc. Flavor was alright probably like a 7.5. The chicken empanada didn't taste that great and was small for the price point. move over Joju, there's a new banh mi spot in town. stopped in on a sunday afternoon to get the special (cold cuts and pate) banh mi, in full size. i opted for the not spicy version. all the fillings were doing what they were supposed to do: savory, crunchy, sweet, sour, etc. loved the fresh snap of the cucumber and pickled daikon and carrots. i scarfed the whole sandwich down in no time. they also have drinks and apps. the service was friendly (a rarity in flushing) and i will return for sure! read more

In my opinion, they have the best bánh mì in the Flushing area. The flavors are spot on, and it's clearly a strong sandwich overall. That said, like many bánh mì spots in NYC, I wish they were a bit more generous with the pâté, mayo/butter, and pickles. I usually order mine with extra pickles and herbs, which helps, but a little more richness from the spread would really take it to the next level. My only real drawback is the bread. I'm personally not a big fan of the semolina-style baguette--it doesn't quite deliver that light, crisp texture I'm looking for. If they can't source or make a more traditional bánh mì baguette, I'd even prefer it on a well-toasted hero. All that said, they're very close to making what could easily be one of the best bánh mì sandwiches in NYC. It's almost the inverse of Banh Mi Co Ut--where the bread is excellent, but the fillings could be more balanced. The pickled daikon and carrots are generous but balanced never overwhelming. I add fresh jalapeño for a kick and it sends it over the top. This isn't just any sandwich. Having been to Saigon, I know authentic banh mi, and this is the real deal. The fact that it's Viet-owned speaks for itself. Pro Tips: Finding it: It's a bit tucked away, but worth the hunt. Take the LIRR to Main Street Flushing, it's on the Manhattan side of the tracks, on 40th Road (across the street from the basketball court). Must-Try Drink: GET THE VIET COFFEE. It's strong, sweetened with condensed milk and has a serious coffee punch. Yes, it costs a bit more than the bakery coffee on Main Street, but they do not skimp. You pay for QUALITY. The pickled radish and carrots were not very prominent though, didn't have that tang, they don't load it up like other places. I barely tasted the Vietnamese ham & bologna since they didn't put much of it. . Overall, the banh mi tasted fine, the sandwich was very simple, nothing fancy schmacy about it, except for the price. I personally don t think it was worth the value. This isn't to say I won't go back and try their other sandwiches. I mean, their crispy pork is their most popular sandwich. I tried their Spring Rolls and Classic Banh Mi and it was good. The spring rolls I really liked, it was crispy, and it didn't feel heavy. I thought it would be 3 really small spring rolls, but it was probably double the size of the ones you get at a restaurant, so you're technically getting 6 spring rolls. Their banh mi bread was really good, it had the perfect amount of daikon and carrots, and it wasn't overpowering. I'm probably going to be in the minority of this, but I prefer my sandwiches to have less meat, and banh mi is the opposite. There was a lot of meat in the sandwiches, and if that's what you like, this is the place for you! First right off the bat, this is a new place I found out from an email from Flushing BID. Should sign up with them for notifications as they help support the local shops. Secondly, they are right at the entrance of a food court so it's easy find. The gentleman at the register was really nice and took his time to give me some directions. I went with the classic and actually grateful they give 2 options as I can sample other things. Pricing was very reasonable and the bread was perfectly toasted. Now I want to explain, a Banh Mi sandwich is not stacked like a Subways. It's a combination of radish/carrots, the savory slice of meats and the aroma of the parsley with the saltiness of the pate all combined. I think that expectations of something piled high w meat is something you are coming to the wrong place for. So come on down and enjoy a great sandwich and coffee. Banh mi classic was good after the first one. I realized that the classic banh mi sandwich should have cold cut meats and not the fatty sliced pork. Other than that it could've been better. And if you get take out make sure you have them separate the veggies so the sandwich doesn't get soggy by the time you get home.
