This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants. This is a family business and Kai is one of the reasons I continue to come back. She knows I continue to order the same thing. Kai asked if I was going to select and new dish for the new year.....ummmm, no! lol Kai had me try the Kow Pad Nam Prik Prow years ago and I've been ordering it ever since. I order it mild since the peanut sauce already gives it a little kick. I make it my own by adding broccoli and chicken. The spring rolls are awesome too. Craved this genre of food. Got curry noodle with chicken, add tofu, medium spice. $14.xx. Average, Thailand food with mediocre flavor. Does not disappoint but does not go above expectations. I called and asked about MSG - which they do use for this dish. I chose to stick with the dish even though having msg in any dish is not my preference. I was happy they were able to accommodate "less sauce" which to me meant less msg ingestion. For those of you sensitive to msg, they DONT have it in pad thai sauce, drunken noodle sauce, but everything else they do ( including curry). Dish was still enjoyable. Medium spice was a little lacking and next time I probably will go for spicier. Portion was good. I was full and I do eat a lot. Only open for carry out only as of January 14th, 2022. It's quite sketchy inside, dirty, water stain. My husband was concerned about eating here. Grabbed some pad Thai with steamed tofu, chicken and veggies, extra extra hot and pad prik with steamed tofu and chicken, medium plus spice. They don't offer scallops any longer. Carry out oder takes about 25 minutes to be ready, called in on our drive there. Must be busy since I was put on hold for a bit ahead of my order. The pad Thai had good heat, 10x isn't too hot for my hubby. The couple of bites burnt my mouth. The pad prik is so-so, not super flavorful, way too heavy on the white onions and greens onions. I was so hungry. Decided to try this place and hoped for the best. My hope was crushed after tasting the bland fried rice from a Thai restaurant. Over priced at $14+ for overcooked rice that had no salt. There were peppers in the rice for some reason I think all their rice has bell peppers in it. I had a taste for Thai but didn't feel like traveling to Ferndale to our regular Thai spot. After much review and scouring on Yelp, I settled on Bangkok Express. Since I was around the corner and in between running errands, I decided to head inside to order. I had already reviewed the menu online and knew what I was getting. Upon entrance just 15 minutes or so after opening, there was already a city worker waiting for their food. The lady was on the phone taking an order. The interior was taped off just for takeout orders. A couple of seats up front to wait. She immediately greeted and me took my order-"20 minutes." I got K4 Drunken fried rice with chicken and shrimp and Pad See E with Beef. Both at a medium heat level. I ran another errand and when I came back the food was waiting. They had also thrown in some soup-meh. It was not Tom Yum. They lined the containers with aluminum which kept the food good and hot when I made it home. It was flavorful. Great lunch portions. The rice needed a touch of salt. Overall, a nice Thai spot nearby. I'll go again. read more

It's located on the east side of Southfield Rd. in a strip mall behind Big Boy. The decor was a little dated and the wall paper was peeling off the wall. However, the place was large for a Thai place and it was clean. I started with Hot and Sour soup. The soup was thick with a lot of chicken and was steaming hot. However the soup didn't have much flavor and was missing that signature sour "kick". I ordered the Pad Walnut since I've never really heard of it and it sounded good. I got chicken and medium spice. The dish was egg noodles topped with vegetables, chicken and walnuts. Though everything seemed fresh, it was not very impressive. The dish had almost no real flavor other than generic Chinese stir fry taste. Also, in my honest opinion, the spice level was not medium. I dare say that it was under mild. Maybe I'm just used to hotter dishes but it seems like I'm having a hard time getting the right amount of spice. The place was clean and the service efficient. It wasn't a bad place. I was pretty disappointed in the flavors of the dishes. I feel that I could have made the same chinese stir fry at home with frozen vegetables, chicken and ramen noodles. Got takeout at Bangkok Express on a Saturday night around 7:45pm. They were surprisingly busy with a number of takeout orders and folks dining in. Ordered the following: Chicken egg roll - tasty but couldn't find the chicken. Crab Rangoon - biggest chunk was the red onion; wasn't the worst that I have had. Cream cheese and red onion were prevalent. Couldn't taste any crab. The pad Thai chicken and drunken noodles with shrimp were so spicy - even though we ordered mild - that they weren't edible for our kids. The drunken noodles with shrimp were too salty with and seasoned with some spices that were unfamiliar and overpowering. The drunken noodles had about 6 nice sized shrimp. Pad Thai chicken was dark meat - which I didn't mind. It was a little dried out though. read more

Looked for a nearby Thai restaurant. This is the first one that popped up: in the same plaza as Planet Fitness, Burlington Coat Factory, and several other business on Southfield Rd between 12 and 13 Mile Rd. As a result, parking is plenty. Not sure if we went at a slow time, but my friend and I were the only ones in the restaurant the entire visit. Interestingly, a lot of people came for pick-up orders. So this place must lean in favor of that instead. We sat down, got our ice waters right away, and ordered from the menu: drunken noodles for me and a spicy curry for my friend. About $10 each (they add more onto the price when it turns into dinner time). We each got shrimp chips surprisingly, so that was nice to snack on while we waited for our food to come. Food arrived, and the portions were definitely big enough to serve as two meals. We each got moderate spiciness, and it tasted delicious for the first couple of bites. However, as we got halfway through our meal, we could feel the salt rush and had to take the rest home. For those sensitive to too much salt, have them adjust in mind of that. Otherwise, decent place for quick Thai food enough to fill you up. read more

I've picked up carry-out from this place a couple of times now. From what I've seen so far they do a pretty good job. Quick service (no frills), good flavors, large portions, affordable prices, and an uncharacteristically extensive menu selection. Both times I ordered Chiang Rai Eggplant and each time it was the star of the entire meal. This isn't something you typically see on the menu at most Thai places. The only other place I've even tried it is at Bangkok Bistro in Troy where it tastes better (artful even) but also costs 50% more. It's still stellar at Bangkok Express however and I would absolutely recommend trying it. For those of you wondering what this dish is, it's basically a bunch of marinated eggplant mixed into a sweet/spicy thick brown gravy with peppers and onions and little bites of chicken. Mixed with some jasmine rice it's unstoppable. Get out the mouth shovel and dig in. I've also tried their Pad See Ew a couple of times and thought it was well done. They use Chinese broccoli (which is a detail some places miss) and the sauce is nicely caramelized into some decently thick (but not too thick) noodles. Good consistency. I tried their Pad Thai and was honestly not impressed. It was kind of dry and lacking in flavor, with the noodles thinner (and dryer) than I like. Would not order it again from them. The spring rolls were also not great. The spice levels here seem a bit inconsistent. First time I ordered from here the dishes seemed almost perfectly spiced for the levels I specified (if not slightly under-spiced). The next time I went I ordered the same things and the medium dish tasted mild and the mild seemingly lacked heat entirely. All in all, Bangkok Express isn't my favorite Thai place in the area. But I think it's my favorite that I've tried within a couple mile radius of home (Berkley). I will continue to go back for carry-out, though the lackluster dining room does not inspire me to want to eat in. I picked up a carry out menu the last time I was in there and the selection is larger than at most Thai places. They have all kinds of dishes I want to try, many of them being things I have not tried elsewhere. Based on what I've tried so far I give Bangkok Express a very solid 3 stars, however I may have to revise that after trying some of their seafood dishes, as well as their Massaman Curry and Pad Ped and other favorites. read more

Walking in here, I didn't know what to expect. I mean, it's a Thai place across from a Planet Fitness. Pretty typical. The inside was also kind of typical for Asian/Thai places, with booths along the walls and tables in the middle. Some booths needed to be re-upholstered though. Anyways, we ordered a few appetizers to start off - crab ragoon, fried spring rolls (honestly, it's so confusing using the same name at Vietnamese Restaurants), and fried shrimp. -The "spring rolls" were pretty good, although I think the sauce could be a little thicker, and have a little more flavor. -The crab ragoon is not my favorite dish anywhere, so I'm not going to go into that. -The fried shrimp appetizer (see pic) is really good. And the shrimps are big too, which is better than most places. They don't skimp on their shrimp, so I won't skimp them on this review. I decided to skip my usual Pad See Ew and order my other usual Pad Prik King (no carbs after 5pm!). The PPK here is surprisingly good. The sauce is a little thick, which is new for me, and the green beans were really on point. They weren't soggy like they've been left out for a few days - just the right amount of crispiness. The beef was good, but It could be a little more tender. Maybe the chicken would be a little better. Some final notes: -I could use a hot pepper container at my table, in case I wanted more hotness. A lot of Thai places have this. -The fish tank needs to be re-done. I mean, I'm a fish tank guy, so I could just be nitpicking, but it could look a lot better. Overall, the things I pointed out are just personal preferences. What I liked was the quality of the food, and how they don't really skimp you on the portions. My friends also seemed to have enjoyed their food, so that's always a plus in my book. I'd come back, since I have to try my usual of Pad See Ew. Make it rain girl. read more

When you pull up to this place it could definitely use a little TLC (new ceiling tiles, paint job, window cleaning, etc) but our family has been eating here for years and it's consistently very good and I went here during Covid this weekend and it was take out only and the staff had masks on, required guests to have masks, and even had "clean" and "dirty" pen cups for when you sign your receipt. I feel like they've upped their game in the 5 years since I last came here. I was hungry and I just wanted to walk somewhere because I was too lazy to get into the car. So my choices were extremely limited. They still had the same furnishings and fish tank, but I'm not picky about those types of things. I had spring rolls and a noodle dish I've never had before. As I sat there enjoying my cucumber salad that they brought in exchange for a soup I couldn't eat, I noticed that most of the people swirling around were regulars. Ladies talking to the waitress about her new hair do, you want the same almond dish, Bill? It was a nice little restaurant family. After 11 years of working in the area, I was finally introduced to this place. Better late than never I guess! Firstly, their mild+ is pretty spicy compared to other Thai places in the area so I caution that. The complimentary soup is really good. I'm not sure if it's hot and sour or not as it wasn't as sour as other places I've had it at. The Pad Pak with chicken was excellent all around; the sauce, fresh vegetables, so good! I was very pleased with my experience here for lunch yesterday. I was craving something spicy and savory and Thai fit the bill. Went in and was okay with the atmosphere. Not off-putting and there was sufficient space for 1PM on a Tuesday. I did have to wait a little bit as there were multiple large groups ahead of me, but I wasn't in a rush. Service is a little slow, but they were busy so I get it. The food was really good and actually quite inexpensive for what I got. The soup (tom yum) was warm, slightly spicy and had lots of bamboo and ground chicken which made for a good appetizer. I had the beef pad thai and it was quite large for only a $7 price tag. Mild plus did have that decent but not too crazy hot kick. Definitely going to go up to Medium though next time. There was definitely enough beef and it was tender and not too cloyingly sweet. I probably will ask for extra peanuts also. Some people would say there was too much sauce, or too little, or whatever, but I think it came out just right. For $7 plus a tip, getting a full pad thai meal with soup is really good and while its not the newest, up to date place, it does the trick for a great value lunch. read more

Excellent food! Excellent value! The lunch order is a nice portion, and includes soup. I love the fact that the drunken noodles come with several vegetables & not just bean sprouts like some places. The shrimp and scallops they use are a good size. The only thing that prevented me from giving them 5 stars was the fact that I don't believe their medium + is spicy enough (what can I say...I love the heat). A nice place to stop by while running errands! My mom and I were in the area and had 2.5 hours to kill and wanted to see what there was to eat. We walked into this quaint place and saw that it was empty save for the three waitresses giggling in the back and were a little concerned but were politely greeted and seated. The waitress serving us was very, very sweet and attentive without being overbearing. The food was above average (I got the Tom yum soup with chicken which was a bit too salty, the chicken curry puffs which were delicious, the spring roll which was probably the best roll I've ever had, and the pineapple fried rice which came in a huge portion). The waitress even offered to pour my mom and me tea after we had been sitting there an extra 30 minutes after paying our bill just chatting! That's what I call service!! read more

I've eaten there about once a week for the past three years and can only remember one time I was not not completely satisfied with my food.
