    Drunken Noodles (Chicken)

I'll keep it simple. Eat from May's. Any time I'm in Ferndale or even in the Metro Detroit area, I make it a point to get the drunken noodles with chicken. Oh. My. Goodness. My uncle turned me on to this place last year and I'm super happy he did. Even the egg rolls and crab rangoons are to die for. It isn't very pricey, and you definitely get a lot of food. This place is so good, I can't even wait until lunch for the leftovers. I eat them for breakfast.

#12 Kang Kalee (potato curry) with tofu

I had my usual #12 Kang Kalee (potato curry) today (9-30-22) and I was so happy it was just as I remembered. A recent reviewer said they used crinkle cut fries instead of the usual cottage fries, but maybe that was a temporary supply chain issue, as today it was back to the cottage fries. I think this dish is the best on the menu!

This will be a short review. There's not much to say but ... I love this place. LOVE! It's not fancy. If you want a fancy space and fancy food go elsewhere. If you want good Thai food that you can adjust the spice level and have it actually be spicy this is your place. Everything I have had has been excellent. I first stopped here with my students on our team field trip. I honestly kind of rolled my eyes at the suggestion because students usually pick the worst places. One time a student suggested I go to Fuji Buffet and I ended up sick the rest of the evening... no need for details on that experience. Lol I'm glad I listened to my students at this time. Now this is my go to Thai place in the area. I like that it's a small unpretentious space. I even like the styrofoam plates your food comes on. My faves would be the crab Rangoon. It's the best. It really is so get it. The vegetable curry with chicken. The chicken wings. Any of their noodle dishes. Most people like threes company. Again, I've never had a bad dish here. They are fast and friendly. They probably make most of their money on take out because there are always people in and out of the place when I'm dining in. Just go. You won't be disappointed. promise. Let me know how it goes.

I'm really conflicted in deciding how to rate May's Bangkok Express. On one hand, as a value Thai food option in Ferndale, with (ridiculously) fast service and OK quality food, I want to rate it well. On the other hand, it's lacking in a lot of places and I can't in good conscience give it a 4-star review. If 3.5 stars was an option, I'd definitely rate this restaurant 3.5 stars. A friend and I recently stopped by the restaurant during the Ferndale DIY Street Fair. Because we were in a time crunch, we decided to try the restaurant as it was one of few joints that wasn't completely jam-packed with people. Once inside, I could tell precisely why more people aren't flocking to the restaurant. The interior is very dated, and works for the average person looking to get takeout, but is not exactly what the DIY Street Fair goer wants to experience on their Saturday night out. The menu itself is very simple and easy to navigate, you'll find all the standard Thai fare here. The most surprising (and perhaps most questionable) thing about the restaurant is how rapidly you recieve your food once you've ordered. From the moment we paid for our order to when our food was given to us, not 6 minutes could have passed. I remarked to my friend that most fast food restaurants are not this quick... Though this was a bit of a red-flag, we were on a schedule and gave the food a shot anyway. I'm not sure exactly how to describe the food, but overall the taste was fine. It seems as though the restaurant uses some ingredients that cause the food to taste good, though they may not be the healthiest. This is totally fine for cheap Thai food, but in the moment, it came across like they had cut some corners and bought the budget brand MSG or something, because the aftertaste was just a bit odd, and perhaps even fishy... In conclusion, I think I'll say that this restaurant is not a bad restaurant. That said there are plenty of other options in the area (including just across the street) where I think you'll find yourself much more satisfied for not much more money.

Pretty fast service and consistent with many Thai curries that I have tried in the past. Beware, they take their spice levels seriously!

I liked the question "what Spicy level do you want ... (mild/medium/spicy)" for each dish. Decent sized portions and tasty food. The many and varied Pad Thai plates beckoned and we tried the omlette Pad Thai which was delicious and piping hot. Chicken Tom Yum soup and shrimp fried rice also were pleasurable. The atmosphere is really casual - the layout is more of a cafe than a formal dining room. I would definitely return and with friends.

To start, we got moo krob (deep fried pork belly) which is the Thai version of Chinese siu yook. I have to say, I like siu yook so much more - it's a lot more flavorful having been marinated with five spice and served with delicious sweet hoisin sauce for dipping. The pork here was bland and the sauce (fish sauce based) was pretty one note. For my entree, I got rad na (rice noodles with gravy, Chinese broccoli, carrots, and choice of meat - I got pork) which was one of the best I've ever had! They used fresh rice noodles and sautéed it properly to give it the "wok hei" (wok-seared flavor). The gravy was deep and flavorful and the portion size was very good. If everything else was as good as my entree, I'd give this restaurant 5 stars. Unfortunately, my mom's Kao mun gai (steamed chicken with rice and "special sauce") was awful. She asked if the dish had any spice because she can't do spicy, and the server said no, so she decided she'd try it. The chicken was way overcooked and dry, with no flavor at all. The sauce, the only thing providing flavor and moisture, was spicy so that she couldn't eat it. We asked if there was any sauce she could get instead that wasn't spicy, and they said no, but they can give us a bottle of soy sauce. So my mom used some of that, and also took some of my rad na gravy. But because the chicken was so dry and bland, it was beyond saving. My dad got the Thai basil fried rice, mild spice. It was definitely hotter than other Thai restaurants' mild, and my dad said the spice overwhelmed the other flavors. I tried some of it and it was not bad, but nothing remarkable. They told us that traditionally, it's served with the rice on the side, which was strange to me because then it's not fried rice - it's sautéed meat and veggies with rice on the side. I am curious about how some of the other dishes taste here, but it's a shame that 3/4 of the things we ordered were mediocre to downright bad. While I enjoyed my entree, I felt bad my parents didn't enjoy their food.

I understand you eat them "cold" but it was like they pre-rolled them & they sat all day in the fridge until it was ordered. I came in around 845PM. Felt the same temp as my ice cold water they brought out. Pork & shrimp very thin. Peanut sauce was very little, def not enough for 2 rolls. Took one small bite & took it home. As a Vietnamese, Very disappointed. Gave this place another shot & I wish I would've spent my $20 elsewhere. I rlly wanted to like them since they open an hour later than other local joints & it's close to where I stay. Sucks, just got back from airport needed some liquid gold in my life. Came in & ordered in Vietnamese, & she didn't understand me. I should've just walked out idk if it was because I came late, or what. I walked in someone was already there, they had a couple of carry outs, but another table of 2 came in. I took my time sifting thru the noodles to make sure I wasn't tripping. Just go the extra 5-7 mins & stick to Madison heights area or go home & make some eggs & rice til the next day. TO ME, It's rlly not worth it as a Vietnamese person, but you may have a different experience & I hope that you do!
