Nice quick and easy takeout service. Affordable too! We ordered the pad Thai (mild) and the vegetable curry with tofu (mild). The pad Thai was good except it had a very strong acidic taste, which I didn't mind but after a few bites got to be too much. Sadly and once again, all too frequently nowadays, a local favorite has turned into a literal (and I mean literal) s**t hole. Took the wife and daughter there for lunch there today as we haven't been there in a while and always enjoyed the food. Two orders of Pad Thai with chicken and one vegetable curry with tofu and added potatoes. Net result, 3 cases of intestinal disfunction, cramps and diarrhea. That's 3 for 3 Mama May! Good work. My vegetable curry, which has always been my reference dish that I compare all curry dishes to at others places, was so poorly prepared, I ate it only because I was starving. The potatoes that used to be perfectly cooked in the past, were like potato chips. The tofu was so overcooked, I could have shot out light bulbs with a large rubber band from across the room. Very few vegetables at all. Used to have fried eggplant, carrots, tomatoes, lots of bay corn, bamboo shoots, etc. and I was staring at a plate of curry drenched potato chips and soy briquettes. This will be a short review. There's not much to say but ... I love this place. LOVE! It's not fancy. If you want a fancy space and fancy food go elsewhere. If you want good Thai food that you can adjust the spice level and have it actually be spicy this is your place. Everything I have had has been excellent. I first stopped here with my students on our team field trip. I honestly kind of rolled my eyes at the suggestion because students usually pick the worst places. One time a student suggested I go to Fuji Buffet and I ended up sick the rest of the evening... no need for details on that experience. Lol I'm glad I listened to my students at this time. Now this is my go to Thai place in the area. I like that it's a small unpretentious space. I even like the styrofoam plates your food comes on. My faves would be the crab Rangoon. It's the best. It really is so get it. The vegetable curry with chicken. The chicken wings. Any of their noodle dishes. Most people like threes company. Again, I've never had a bad dish here. They are fast and friendly. They probably make most of their money on take out because there are always people in and out of the place when I'm dining in. Just go. You won't be disappointed. promise. We ordered from May's at work. I got the sweet and sour chicken . It was PERFECT -- exactly what I want in sweet & sour. I love that the chicken was not fried -- just big pieces of meat in a luscious sauce filled with vegetables and pineapple, and a very generous portion of rice to go along with it. I'm really conflicted in deciding how to rate May's Bangkok Express. On one hand, as a value Thai food option in Ferndale, with (ridiculously) fast service and OK quality food, I want to rate it well. On the other hand, it's lacking in a lot of places and I can't in good conscience give it a 4-star review. If 3.5 stars was an option, I'd definitely rate this restaurant 3.5 stars. A friend and I recently stopped by the restaurant during the Ferndale DIY Street Fair. Because we were in a time crunch, we decided to try the restaurant as it was one of few joints that wasn't completely jam-packed with people. Once inside, I could tell precisely why more people aren't flocking to the restaurant. The interior is very dated, and works for the average person looking to get takeout, but is not exactly what the DIY Street Fair goer wants to experience on their Saturday night out. The menu itself is very simple and easy to navigate, you'll find all the standard Thai fare here. The most surprising (and perhaps most questionable) thing about the restaurant is how rapidly you recieve your food once you've ordered. From the moment we paid for our order to when our food was given to us, not 6 minutes could have passed. I remarked to my friend that most fast food restaurants are not this quick... Though this was a bit of a red-flag, we were on a schedule and gave the food a shot anyway. I'm not sure exactly how to describe the food, but overall the taste was fine. It seems as though the restaurant uses some ingredients that cause the food to taste good, though they may not be the healthiest. This is totally fine for cheap Thai food, but in the moment, it came across like they had cut some corners and bought the budget brand MSG or something, because the aftertaste was just a bit odd, and perhaps even fishy... In conclusion, I think I'll say that this restaurant is not a bad restaurant. That said there are plenty of other options in the area (including just across the street) where I think you'll find yourself much more satisfied for not much more money. read more

Just a brief update, as you'll note the star rating above hasn't changed a bit. I've been here at least a dozen times, now, as it's mere blocks from my house in Ferndale. They are consistent, and consistently inexpensive, too. I've eaten in, I've gotten my food to go, and overall, I'm quite pleased with it. Again: it's not going to be your favorite destination for aesthetics or atmosphere, as it's just a hole in the wall type of place. Very solid, though, and very affordable, especially since all of their menu prices include sales tax. My typical order now is their Vegetable Curry, add chicken, medium, which does just fine for me: if I'm absolutely ravenous, I'll end up eating the whole thing, but normally I'll end up taking a bit of it home with me for a snack later. For $8 ($7 plus $1 for adding the chicken), that's right up my alley. The little touch of adding a piece of raw cucumber and a tiny slice of orange is always appreciated when you're eating there, too. Spice levels are consistent from visit to visit. Is it my favorite red curry Thai dish from the area? No...but for the *price*, it's plenty good: they're about 20-30% lower in price than most other places for the same dish. That's pretty significant. It won't blow you away, but it should satisfy you well, and that's something to be proud of. For good, cheap Thai food, May's will check that box. read more

I'm rarely in the neighborhood, but I saw this convenient Thai place, and tried it for the first time. It was no-frills take-out, but sometimes that's all you need. By the time we got the food home, some of the sauces had congealed. Nothing really tasted great. Even the cucumber garnish seemed old. And the chicken wings were either re-fried or over-cooked. It's not often that there are Thai leftovers at our house. But no one finished their meals. My papered service animal (I am her handler and she is a dog training for pediatric hospice) and we were just refused service at Mays Bangkok express in downtown Ferndale, even though she has her service vest on and was sleeping on the floor... they asked to see her card and because it is in my vehicle they wouldn't serve me food. I told them that it is not a health code violation for a pay service dog to come into an establishment and they disagreed and said I was violating the law by bringing a service dog into the establishment. I said that I would go to my car to get the paperwork and they said "no you can leave and go eat across the street", "you're not allowed to have animals here, even if they are service animals for people that are disabled". This was explicitly told to me by one of the employees in the presence of the manager. I legally temporarily disabled under the law, and have legal protections through the justice department, and federal law, with the Americans with disabilities act of 1970. I told them that I can easily report this to the justice department online and they said fine go ahead and report that nothing was done wrong. This is never happened to me in the state of Michigan before and I find it to be not very nice and I do not recommend this establishment to any disabled people, anyone with the service animal, or veterans. This was the most unkind service I have ever experienced in the state of Michigan. read more

So Asian is my go to food but my fiancé doesn't always feel the same except for here! He loves it. His favorite are the chicken wings and he rarely eats meat. The wings are crisp and always taste fresh. He got vegetable curry today and said it's very flavorful. I typically get shrimp fried rice but today I got crab drunken noodles which was good. We dined in today and the service was incredibly fast and everyone is very friendly. Prices are great and portions are large. I love how hot and fresh the food is. Very easy carryout, pretty reasonably priced. Ordered the pad sew and a side order of fried rice for only $2. This place is clearly family run, which I always appreciate. The pad sew was high quantity and good chicken,but too sweet for my liking. Fried rice is a great deal that you can't beat for $2. They have 4 or 5 jugs of water for free fill ups. I wanted the food to be good, it came up short on being even average. I tried to keep an open mind after seeing how rough and drab the interior of this place looked, but sometimes the best food is served in a mediocre spot. I ordered the fried rice with veggies, which only had a bit of carrots, eggs with scallops. The veggies as dismal, not sure I would qualify as a small handful of carrots to be referred as a "veggie" fried rice. The scallops were under cooked and made me gag and thus caused me to spit out the scallops. Needless to say I didn't eat any more of the scallops and I used some my friend's curry sauce to kick up the fried rice, it was boring and beyond bland. I decided to give this place a try after finding out my go to was closed and ended up being really impressed! I don't like trying new places when it comes Thai but I needed it and could not wait for my go to to open back up so I decided to go here and I'm really glad I did. My mom and I love a good "Three's Company" which is shrimp, scallops and crab in a red curry sauce with veggies like mushrooms and green peppers. It's my favorite dish and this place did it justice. I tried being adventurous and got mine with "medium" spice which was more like spicy as medium hell! My mom got mild which was perfect so I declared right then and there to never venture off from mild again! They also had some really good crab rangoon and spring rolls too! The crab rangoon was filled with cream cheese and crab pieces and fried oh so perfectly. The spring rolls looked a bit over done at first but tasted perfect as well! I've been coming here since it was Al's Bangkok Express in the early to mid 90's and I still love it to this day. No, it's not the place to take a date, but if you want carry out, it's perfect. Even with recent price increases it's still very reasonably priced. The staff is all family and is attentive and friendly. There is walkable municipal parking that has charging spots available for electric vehicles and it reasonably priced (the parking I mean, I'm not sure about the changing rates). I can't recommend this place enough, I love it here. read more

My friends called this Five Dollar Thai when I moved here (the other one in Ferndale being Monkey Paw Thai). Then the prices increased and it changed to Six Dollar Thai. Now I think it's even more. I walked into the empty restaurant for lunch. I got a menu and was looking at it. I was waiting for someone to come, but no one did. I craned my head to look in the back and I saw somebody sleeping. I tried to make some noise to wake him up, but he didn't and no one came. I looked at the menu and it was about $7 for an entree so I said screw it and I left. Best Thai potato curry ever. This place has been serving the exact same tasting food for probably over 20 years. That is a good thing, because I would not change any of it. Prices are so cheap, I always order two dinners and take one home. One thing that is very important to mention is that this place is BYOF, or Bring Your Own Fork. All they have are these TERRIBLE, tiny plastic forks that look like they are for children. You will go out of your mind with frustration trying to eat your super delicious food with these miniature torture devices. My recommendation, seriously... bring your own fork, you will thank me. We were pleasantly surprised after ending up at Bangkok Express as a last resort. Originally headed to BW3's, the line there was out the door but the money was already in the meter and we didn't want to walk too far in the rain with the baby (WHEW!). So May's Bangkok Express was it. As I said, we were pleasantly surprised by the food. I had the beef with broccoli, and I believe hubby had general's chicken. Since he's used to most places going light on the spice, he got a little wake up call with his medium spiced dish. The side of veggie fried rice we got for our toddler was a very generous portion. She loved it, but she usually does love anything with rice. If you'd like some of her leftovers, they're probably still along the wall and under where her high chair was. (Sorry! :( ) There were high chairs available - yay! But no changing table in the restrooms - boo!
