I made a very large order that was completed in 30 minutes to my surprise. It was all together in a big box that was easy to carry (other than how heavy it was ;)) Inside the restaurant looks a little scary but the food was pretty decent. With plastic covering parts of the ceiling I couldn't tell if they were trying to separate the kitchen from the "dining area" or if the place is under construction. I was expecting the general chicken to be a little spicier but it had good flavor and the chicken wasn't too fatty. Large serving size for a lunch portion. I was not a fan of the egg roll, not much flavor. Hot and sour soup was decent. Not very spicy at all but I still enjoyed it and loved that it was made with tofu. We ordered a ton of other food that I didn't get to try, but it seemed to be enjoyed amongst the people I was with - pad Thai, bbq ribs, lo mein, all the soups, hunan shrimp (looked delicious with all the veggies), shrimp egg foo young (covered in gravy). The soups came with those crunchy fried pieces which is a plus. All in all, I would go back. read more

Went to Golden Bowl for the first time and it was fun really good! The sesame chicken was crispy, flavorful, and not overly sweet--just the way I like it. But the real star was the shrimp in lobster sauce. The shrimp were fresh, and the sauce was rich, savory, and absolutely delicious. Definitely one of the best versions I've had. The service was fast as a carry out. The food was really good and the portions were extra. But my chicken was so bone dry and it tasted like it was old even though the flavors were good. We have been Golden Bowl patrons off and on for over 30 years. Whenever we're in metro Detroit. Early on I remember they moved to a larger location, but not much has changed since then. The dishes haven't changed much. Still very tasty and huge portions. The staff are very friendly, even during Covid. Please note before going in that for them English is a struggle and they might not understand everything you say. You're there to eat not make buddies. At the moment there is no dining in. Call in orders and a polished carry out system keep them open. At times I've wished we live near here, the food is that good.10/20 read more

If I could give a no star I would. Beware if they bring your food out shortly after ordering. I ordered the General's Chicken, and it was horrible. The chicken was hard. It came with Shrimp Fried Rice, which was awful. General's Chicken should have a little spice to it but it was so sweet. Don't have to worry about me going there ever again. read more

We have only had take out from here. The prices are pretty good, and the food is great. From the fried rice to the sweet and sour and the rangoons. They even seal the take out containers and bag very well. I have no complaints. read more

The service is fast and the workers are always polite. The food...ehh...for my husband it was a hit. But for me, I was not happy with the taste of my brown gravy; my rice was old; and the fortune cookies taste weird. In all my life, I have never came across a weird tasting fortune cookie. So we got recommendations for a alternative. So we ordered four things we ordered the beef egg foo young the pork egg for young almond chicken lemon chicken and fried rice pork fried rice. The egg foo young was okay but it didn't have enough flavor inside of it and was very bland. The almond chicken was overcooked in the fried rice was okay but the pork was very chewy. Overall the quality of the food here was not very good it was just okay. They do give you a lot of it though. We have enough food yesterday to feed an army and the price is not that bad. The restaurant is currently carry out only. The dining room is positioned just for waiting to get your food and get out. The area over there is a little sketchy I even saw someone hit someone else's car and then just leave without even notifying the police. Tonight was the first time eating here. I came here because my friend brought me here to eat. At first, I was like, why are you bringing me to a strip mall. But my friend has never steered me wrong when it comes to food. I ordered up the D2 Almond Chicken, Sweet, and Sour Chicken it comes with Fried rice and Egg Roll and Egg Drop Soup. It was a ton of food for $10.50. The food was delicious. There was so much food that I couldn't eat it all. I am looking forward to having leftovers for lunch tomorrow. The food was bland and expensive. I threw it all away. Too expensive to have no flavor. I ordered shrimp lo mein, sesame chicken, and chicken and broccoli. The lo mein noodles reminded me of ramen, the sesame chicken was bland and so was the chicken and broccoli. I tried to add some season to the chicken and broccoli but it didn't work. Odd on the onset, if you look passed the design and decor, you'll enjoy a decent American Chinese meal. The restaurant is in a strip mall building behind nondescript, almost industrial looking doors. There are no windows, once inside, it feels like you're somewhere other than Coolidge and 9 Mile roads. There's really nothing interesting or appealing about the outdated booths, tables and restrooms; however, that seems to not matter to their patrons. There are always folks dining in. Carryout can be slow, as the restaurant is generally crowded. The menu boasts the usual fare.... shrimp, chicken, beef and pork favorites such as sweet & sour combination plates, lo mein, fried rice, egg foo yung, various soups, dumplings and egg rolls. Prices are inexpensive to reasonable. Two people can enjoy a full meal for less than ten bucks. I ordered an almond chicken combo plate with fried rice and eggroll tonight, and paid $8+. I have more than enough for lunch tomorrow. No alcohol or beer is served. Be sure to call-in or you'll be there for a good 30 minutes. read more

Our Christmas tradition is Chinese. Today we went to the Golden Bowl after we were trying to decide and it came recommended by some of the residents at Prentis Apartments. We went at 4:00 which was the perfect time. It got very busy as we were eating. The food was delicious except the broccoli and it was basically not cooked at all. It was a lot of food and the price we paid was so affordable! We would for sure go back. They have a big menu and more than most Chinese restaurants. We recommend you stop in for a meal. read more

There is no better Cantonese style non-gourmet Chinese restaurant in Metro Detroit. It is a neighborhood restaurant that reflects the Oak Park melting pot. The food is solid, the portions are huge and the sizzle rice soup is the best in the City. I love the two servers who have always been friendly to me. Four of us had dinner on Sunday and ordered sizzle rice soup for 2 (which feeds 4-5) and three dinners. We had several meals with our leftovers. The Almond Boneless Chicken and Egg Fu Young are wonderful. Prices are 1/3 less than anywhere else. My reviews rate restaurants within their niche. The Golden Bowl is not trendy, does not serve gourmet Chinese or fusion food and looks the same as it did 35 years ago when I lived close by. But we make the 25 minute drive past dozens of Chinese restaurants to go a few times a month. Don't change for those that need an antiseptic restaurant that serves pretentious food. I was in the neighborhood, and visited Golden Bowl in Oak Park (not affiliated or to be confused with the Golden Bowl in Detroit on Mcnichols). The dining area was empty. It seems this location is more popular for carry out. The service was accommodating and friendly. They were helpful in me placing my order and suggesting veggie alternatives to fit my diet. I ordered the Chicken and Vegetables combo, minus the chicken. Total came to about $9. I visited the neighboring beauty supply while I waited for my food. I was gone about 10 minutes and it was ready upon my return. My order looked delicious! My only complaint was with the sauce for my veggies. It seemed like it was too heavy. read more

My family has been going to this place for many years, and it is one of the best spots for American Chinese food you could possibly ever have. When you go to this restaurant, you have to order the sizzling rice soup. My lord the broth is addicting, the crispness of the rice is perfect, the amount of vegetables is good and in a really amazing quality. Normally I would order the usual General Tso's but the Moo Shu pork is really wonderful. Where do I begin to describe it, the pork is delicious once you put in the sweet Hoisin sauce on the pancake, and the vegetables are tender too. Lastly, order the pepper beef if you plan on going. It tastes wonderful, the peppers give off this wonderful flavor which complements the beef. The meat itself is very tender and the sauce they cook it in is simply amazing. All in all, I think that this place is a must if you live in the Detroit area. read more

My husband and I ordered dinner from the Golden Bowl on this past Sunday, November 14, 2021, which included an order of the Seafood War Bar. While it was tasty, the amount of seafood to vegetables was sorely lacking, and not worth the $15 dollar price it commanded. I had to hunt and peck to find the seafood which include lobster? , bay scallops and shrimp. The shrimp fried rice has a lot more shrimp to rice ratio than the War Bar did. In conclusion, the Seafood War Bar is not worth the high price they charge for it. read more

I had high hopes for my 1st Chinese food since quarantine, but those hopes were quickly dashed. If the food had been even edible, I would have been able to overlook the lack of telephone help, the refusal to allow paying in advance during Covid(July 26,2020), the online system that didn't work & didn't warn there was a problem, but the food we were given: Shrimp Lo Mein, Shrimp Pan Fried noodles & 2 orders of egg rolls (packed together, there is little concept of Covid issues here) was so terrible, tiny, overcooked,flavorless shrimp & glopped-together noodles that were one big inedible mass, has now turned The Golden Bowl into #1 of the worst restaurant Chinese food I've ever been served, even worse than Chinese-Canadian in Antigonish, Nova Scotia in 1985. If it were possible to give this restaurant no stars, or negative stars, I would. We threw all $30 of food in the trash. read more

Pretty good. Prices are okay (a bit higher than normal), portions are huge (maybe 30% larger than normal), the staff is very friendly, and the decor is acceptable. I just had carry out due to the COVID-19 rules at the moment, but I can see myself eating there. I went a bit out of my way to go here, but my normal Chinese place is still closed, so it was worth going a bit out of the way. Honestly better that most of the Chinese food around here. It's no frills, good, large portion Chinese food. Its not super fancy in any way like some of these Asian restaurants popping up... its cheap, you get a ton, and it's straight comfort food.
