Cash only and usually a 20 minute plus minute wait. Worth it! The team works together and has a good system.

Tom Yum Soup. This Is Delicious!
    Mike G.

Aron B. taunted us over and over with his Pi's Thai Cuisine mentions on Detroit Yelp talk threads with "Oh, guess what everyone? I just had another bowl of Pi's Thai Cuisine's Tom Yum Soup". He even taunted us with private messages about how he had eaten Pi's Tom Yum Soup for the umpteenth time in as many days. This went on relentlessly through the winter months... I finally couldn't take it anymore so one day I gassed up the car and drove the 212 miles north to the Detroit area suburb of Hazel Park to meet up with friends Aron, Laurie and Ron for some of this legendary soup. We were not disappointed. If you've ever had Tom Yum, you know that Thailand's version of Hot and Sour Soup is very different from it's Chinese sibling. It's lighter and more fragrant with a tangy slight lemongrass / lime-citrusy taste that makes this soup very satisfying to the palette. The flavors of Pi's Thai Cuisine's version has an unusual slight sweetness that was surprising but really made the flavors a little more rounded. In any case, it was about the best soup I've ever had. My only gripe was that I wish I had gotten the larger size. I could have eaten a lot more. Not content with just an order of soup, I also ordered the Pad Thai subbing woon sen noodles which I shared with everyone. It's Thailand's national dish and we all really enjoyed the flavors and textures that that dish is known for. Pad Thai here is a definite recommendation. We also got to try some of Laurie's Drunken Noodles. They were really good but frankly, I liked mine much better. Pi's Thai Cuisine is as rough looking as they come and has all the ambiance of a garage sale. But as many of us know, the sketchier looking an Asian restaurant is, the better the food. Take note that this is a tiny restaurant of 8 seats so it's more of a take out place. I'm in for 4 stars with a push on this one. The food is legit and the people are really nice and friendly. Good recommendation Aron. BTW can you find out if they do Door Dash to Columbus? Please and thank you. If you're in the area, go there for great Thai food. And A Little More Food For Thought: * They tend to lean towards the spicier side of things. I'd recommend trying medium to medium plus on your first visit. Hands down, the best Thai I've ever had. I started going to this place just over 20 years ago, but with kids, moves and mainly just not being in the area, I've tried to find substitutes, but Pi's was always my number one, nothing compares! I decided to make the 20+ minute drive because after not having Pi's for nearly 15 years, I couldn't wait! The store front looks the same, but they've added a different entrance and the esthetically looks 100% better! After making the drive there, the drive home was painful. All I wanted to do was pull over and start eating! I had ordered a homemade spring roll and the #8 Pad Bai Kra Praow with chicken, the same thing I ordered all those years ago. The first thing I dug into when I got home was the spring roll. Holy hell, I don't remember them being this amazing! I wish I had ordered more. Many more. The dish I had ordered was just as amazing and hasn't changed one bit! I would suggest to the company to put the rice in a different container for carry-out orders. The rice had soaked up all of the juice/sauce before I w got home. I don't know a single place that puts the rice in the same container, but that definitely doesn't take away from their rating. Also, when it comes to spice, always ask for a level below than what you want. My mild-med spice was hot as hell! I'll definitely be back and hopefully not in another 15 years.

    Tom yum soup, very good.

Tom yum soup, Tom yum soup yes please. Oh so good! As mentioned by Aron this soup is excellent. It's worth the visit just for the soup. The service is friendly and the food is fresh and tasty. The place is small with only 3 tables and room for 2 people at each, and kind of dumpy looking, so take out is your best option. But if you stop in don't forget that soup it's definitely a stand out at Pi Thai.

Weird hours, cash only, and not my favorite Thai. It's a shame because it's across the street from me and I still prefer elsewhere.

I liked the question "what Spicy level do you want ... (mild/medium/spicy)" for each dish. Decent sized portions and tasty food. The many and varied Pad Thai plates beckoned and we tried the omlette Pad Thai which was delicious and piping hot. Chicken Tom Yum soup and shrimp fried rice also were pleasurable. The atmosphere is really casual - the layout is more of a cafe than a formal dining room. I would definitely return and with friends.

To start, we got moo krob (deep fried pork belly) which is the Thai version of Chinese siu yook. I have to say, I like siu yook so much more - it's a lot more flavorful having been marinated with five spice and served with delicious sweet hoisin sauce for dipping. The pork here was bland and the sauce (fish sauce based) was pretty one note. For my entree, I got rad na (rice noodles with gravy, Chinese broccoli, carrots, and choice of meat - I got pork) which was one of the best I've ever had! They used fresh rice noodles and sautéed it properly to give it the "wok hei" (wok-seared flavor). The gravy was deep and flavorful and the portion size was very good. If everything else was as good as my entree, I'd give this restaurant 5 stars. Unfortunately, my mom's Kao mun gai (steamed chicken with rice and "special sauce") was awful. She asked if the dish had any spice because she can't do spicy, and the server said no, so she decided she'd try it. The chicken was way overcooked and dry, with no flavor at all. The sauce, the only thing providing flavor and moisture, was spicy so that she couldn't eat it. We asked if there was any sauce she could get instead that wasn't spicy, and they said no, but they can give us a bottle of soy sauce. So my mom used some of that, and also took some of my rad na gravy. But because the chicken was so dry and bland, it was beyond saving. My dad got the Thai basil fried rice, mild spice. It was definitely hotter than other Thai restaurants' mild, and my dad said the spice overwhelmed the other flavors. I tried some of it and it was not bad, but nothing remarkable. They told us that traditionally, it's served with the rice on the side, which was strange to me because then it's not fried rice - it's sautéed meat and veggies with rice on the side. I am curious about how some of the other dishes taste here, but it's a shame that 3/4 of the things we ordered were mediocre to downright bad. While I enjoyed my entree, I felt bad my parents didn't enjoy their food.

The food is great, but oh man they're not playing around with the spice levels. I did get hot (not Thai hot), and it's enough to bring a bit of sweat, which I love. It's not enough to mute the flavor, but it's strong and it lingers on your lips. I ordered shrimp, fully expecting to be screwed on the number of shrimp(a recurring theme in my life) - But there was a decent number, and when I chopped them up enough to work for the dish. Overall, a solid experience. I'll definitely be stopping by in person some day.

I don't know if they're having an off night or something, but the food was so bad no one finished their meal. The spring rolls taste like coleslaw, the pad Thai has zero flavor and it smells like wet hay, and the wonton soup tasted like chicken water. I honestly can't believe how terrible it was. My MIL said the curry was good (that's why I gave 2 stars), but she asked for no spice and it was quite the opposite so she couldn't eat much. We spent almost $90 on this takeout meal and it was so incredibly disappointing I can't justify ever eating here again.
