    "Pad Thai"
    Hannah M.

Meh. I was pretty underwhelmed when I ordered for lunch today. Granted I lived in NYC for 5 years where I think the Thai food is plentiful and some of the best you can get anywhere, but even so I was a little disappointed with my lunch today. First and foremost the delivery was messy - like bags leaking etc. Maybe was the delivery driver's fault but I didn't get that impression. The one thing I will say is that lunch is super super cheap. $10 for pad Thai and the portion size is massive. We also got a Tom Kha soup for like $4 which, compared to the $8 I pay in NYC, is an absolute bargain. With that said, the soup was gnarly. Like watery and not at all the rich coconut flavor that I'm used to. Had a weird citrus flavor (not lime) that should not have been in there. Pad Thai was good but unlike any pad Thai I've had before, so either I've never had authentic pad Thai or (more likely) this one was just wrong. Good flavor, just not pad Thai. It wasn't the worst lunch I've had but I don't think I would order again.

I can't believe I have never eaten at Ahan Thai until recently! My friend suggested we pop in before a movie and it was closer than walking to Shin Thai (which I adore). Ahan had a cute location near the train tracks, Noir Leather, and that tiny burger place in downtown Royal Oak. There is a parking structure nearby so that's convenient too. It was oddly dim inside and really felt like it was more so set up for take out--I'm guessing since the pandemic. You order in the middle of the restaurant and they bring the food to you in take away containers. I had the Pad Se Eew and Hot and Sour Soup with tofu (which was vegetarian! And very similar to how Thai Cafe made theirs. The Pad See Eew was flavorful and had a good mix of veg. The spice level was great! I ordered medium and felt like it fit the bill nicely. Water is available in large pour containers. In general, I would go back. Dine-in was awkward but hey, it was delicious.

It was my first time here on a Tuesday evening. My friend and I decided at the last minute to eat here. He had been here before and enjoyed their food so I was happy to give it a go. He ordered the Pad Thai with chicken. And I got the drunken noodles with chicken. I was debating between this and the pineapple fried rice but I was in a noodle mood so I went with the drunken noodles. Our waitress said it was one of the most popular dishes. Their menu is customizable in that you select your protein so that was nice. I like the veggies that came in my dish and the brown sauce was very flavorful. My friend said my dish looked really good and that he would order it next time. The portions are pretty plentiful. Both he and I had leftovers to take with us. The service was quick. I think there was only one other customer in the place but that could of been a function of when we went. If I'm in the area, I would go back. Overall, a solid option for Thai.

3.5/5 stars so I will round up to 4. I had a $25 Postmates credit and used it for Ahan Thai tonight ... to be honest, I wanted to try Shin Thai once I saw it on there, but Ahan Thai quoted me 60-75 minutes and Shin Thai was saying 2+ hours. I ordered the fresh rolls (yass! I was so excited when I saw those, I love them and sometimes they are hard to find) and Pad Cashew, with beef. -1 star because: they skimped on the beef and cashews. I counted maybe 5-7 pieces of beef max. Lots of veggies, though, including fresh mushrooms, green pepper, and red pepper. The fresh rolls were good and had chicken in them, and the sauce that came with them was great; peanutty and some sort of vinegar (the traditional fresh rolls sauce, though a little sweeter than others I've had). Overall I would try Ahan Thai again, but I'd maybe order a chicken dish next time to see if I get more of a meat portion.

I felt the dinner portion was a bit small for the price, but the rice was perfectly cooked and I loved the atmosphere created by the pergola inside the restaurant

Please tell me how this is considered fresh rolls?

Used to be good - but essentially the quality is very inconsistent. I've had some fairly decent fresh rolls (never great), for example, and then received fresh rolls that were 2 piles of shredded lettuce, with a few chunks of chicken and a couple strands of rice noodles thrown on top. I don't understand how that was sent to a customer. The rest of the dinner was mediocre. Will not be ordering from there again.

What sold me for ordering the Pattani was the baby corn!

Thai food is one of my favorites because of the combination of flavors each dish offers. In terms of my favorite Thai restaurant in Royal Oak, Ahan Thai is at the top of my list! Crab Rangoon was on the menu, and there was no question about it; I am terribly weak and always have to order it when I see it! I love the plum dipping sauce it comes with. I ordered the Pattani curry entree. It was a tough choice among all their options under the curry entrees section of the menu. But what really sold it for me was the fact that the Pattani was the only one that came with baby corn. I love baby corn! I also really enjoyed the roasted cashew nuts sauteed in the coconut red curry; it had the right amount of spicy kick alongside its sweetness. The restaurant is clean, and the employees are welcoming and respectful. The waitress I had was incredibly nice and she provided great service. Ahan Thai is definitely a place I would look forward to returning to in the near future!

Got food delivered from Door Dash. Crab Rangoon was not even in a ball shape. Came in triangles with hardly any filling and the shape made it too doughy and soggy. Pad Thai had NO SAUCE. Definitely not made with Tamarind or fish sauce or anything for that matter. Whole dish was white. Did have fresh bean sprouts and chicken was good. Just tasted like sorta spicy noodles. Ordered medium spicy and definitely felt it was more like a thai mild. Kow Pad Pak tasted better but had a loz of veggies that weren't listed in the description

Delicious food. Good serving size. Perfect spices. We order from here all the time. We enjoy their dishes made spicy and they never disappoint with the robust flavour of their food. Highly recommend this place.

    Bacon Fried Rice

Stop by couple days ago to grab dinner. I ordered there Bacon Fried rice with chicken, Pad-see-ew hot spice with beef and an appetizer sampler. Also don't play with the spice, it'll make you cry because after two bites my mouth was on fire. Overall, food was great and portion size was good. I'll come back next time.

The food is great, but oh man they're not playing around with the spice levels. I did get hot (not Thai hot), and it's enough to bring a bit of sweat, which I love. It's not enough to mute the flavor, but it's strong and it lingers on your lips. I ordered shrimp, fully expecting to be screwed on the number of shrimp(a recurring theme in my life) - But there was a decent number, and when I chopped them up enough to work for the dish. Overall, a solid experience. I'll definitely be stopping by in person some day.

I don't know if they're having an off night or something, but the food was so bad no one finished their meal. The spring rolls taste like coleslaw, the pad Thai has zero flavor and it smells like wet hay, and the wonton soup tasted like chicken water. I honestly can't believe how terrible it was. My MIL said the curry was good (that's why I gave 2 stars), but she asked for no spice and it was quite the opposite so she couldn't eat much. We spent almost $90 on this takeout meal and it was so incredibly disappointing I can't justify ever eating here again.

I liked the question "what Spicy level do you want ... (mild/medium/spicy)" for each dish. Decent sized portions and tasty food. The many and varied Pad Thai plates beckoned and we tried the omlette Pad Thai which was delicious and piping hot. Chicken Tom Yum soup and shrimp fried rice also were pleasurable. To start, we got moo krob (deep fried pork belly) which is the Thai version of Chinese siu yook. I have to say, I like siu yook so much more - it's a lot more flavorful having been marinated with five spice and served with delicious sweet hoisin sauce for dipping. The pork here was bland and the sauce (fish sauce based) was pretty one note. For my entree, I got rad na (rice noodles with gravy, Chinese broccoli, carrots, and choice of meat - I got pork) which was one of the best I've ever had! They used fresh rice noodles and sautéed it properly to give it the "wok hei" (wok-seared flavor). The gravy was deep and flavorful and the portion size was very good. If everything else was as good as my entree, I'd give this restaurant 5 stars. Unfortunately, my mom's Kao mun gai (steamed chicken with rice and "special sauce") was awful. She asked if the dish had any spice because she can't do spicy, and the server said no, so she decided she'd try it. The chicken was way overcooked and dry, with no flavor at all. The sauce, the only thing providing flavor and moisture, was spicy so that she couldn't eat it. We asked if there was any sauce she could get instead that wasn't spicy, and they said no, but they can give us a bottle of soy sauce. So my mom used some of that, and also took some of my rad na gravy. But because the chicken was so dry and bland, it was beyond saving. My dad got the Thai basil fried rice, mild spice. It was definitely hotter than other Thai restaurants' mild, and my dad said the spice overwhelmed the other flavors. I tried some of it and it was not bad, but nothing remarkable. They told us that traditionally, it's served with the rice on the side, which was strange to me because then it's not fried rice - it's sautéed meat and veggies with rice on the side. I am curious about how some of the other dishes taste here, but it's a shame that 3/4 of the things we ordered were mediocre to downright bad. While I enjoyed my entree, I felt bad my parents didn't enjoy their food.

Far East Chinese & Thai Food is FAR OUT and double good!…read more My office ordered lunch here for me and my boss' birthday today, and not only was the restaurant easy to communicate with regarding the large order, but the food was super dope as well. I ordered the Pad See Yu, and it was stupid good. The sauce had a hint of sweetness to it, and a healthy portion of beef, shrimp, chicken and pork. I didn't feel "cheated out" on anything like many other restaurants leave you feeling on combo dishes like this (see the photo). The dumplings come in 6, and we ordered both the steamed and pan fried. I failed to procure a photo of them, but these are the old school pot stickers - thicker dough and well made. Depending upon your mood, I could suggest either the steamed or the fried, but steamed is probably my fav. The egg rolls were crunchy and were not overly oiled, which means this restaurant cares enough to change their fry oil, ensuring that the guest has a better meal, rather than trying to stretch every last drop of an oil batch. I don't remember what everyone else got, but there were no complaints from the varied dishes I DO remember - Beef & Broccoli, Shrimp Egg Foo Young, Kung Pau and more. I'll most certainly be coming to this establishment again in the near future, and couldn't recommend to you more ordering here yourself.
