I was suddenly craving Thai food so I decided to order here since its super close to where I work. Its located in a small strip mall, where the entrance to the restaurant is inside. Upon walking in, I noticed some pretty unique decorations that does give you that Thai vibe, including a small elephant statue next to the cash register. Additionally, I love the smell of thai food and the spices they use, so the aroma will definitely hit you when you enter. I ordered the Pad See Ew(spicy) while my coworkers ordered a Pad Thai and a Thai Fried Rice. The pad see ew was seasoned nicely with the sweet soy sauce and the noodles were cooked to perfection. However, the spice was overpowering it a bit. That was most likely on my part as I did order spicy. Overall, I really did enjoy getting take-out from here. My wife and I recently moved here from Connecticut, so we're trying out local eatery's, and Penns Thai is, luckily, less than a mile from where we live. We went for dinner tonight, the food was amazing. Serving portions are quite large - we both had an entree and we ordered the curry rolls, the bill was under $40. I love the amount of options on the menu, the variety of spices levels that you can pick from, too. My wife and I were already discussing what we would get next time we came here. I love their hot and sour soup, I usually have two bowls, that's right, two bowls, I love it that much! Ordered Pad See Eve and fried rice and had them delivered for my dinner tonight. The food came quicker than I expected. However the food is very very salty. I know Thai food is salty but this is very very salty. I would suggest that foods are made less salty and if customers need to make it more salty they do get a few packages of soy sauce that came with the food. read more

First time visitor. Just spent $60 because I wanted to do a carry out of Thai for my bday and most Thai restaurants are closed on Sundays so I gave them a try for our group of 4. Penn's was the worst decision I could have made. Ordered 3 dinners, 2 satay with extra peanut sauce (being eaten as a meal), and an appetizer assortment. I ordered online and they called me right away to say they only had one satay left and couldn't do extra peanut sauce because they only had one order left. At 4:30pm, a half hour after they OPENED. They had no peanut sauce because they don't make it, and it was clear when we got the order as there were no skewers on the chicken and the chicken looked almost gray with fake grill marks. Looked processed. What kind of a Thai restaurant only has one pre-portioned cup of peanut sauce on their premises? Moving on... App assortment was straight out of a box, very little filling, probably bought at Costco. The "dipping sauce" was a flavorless almost clear liquid about 1/4 inch full, we didn't know what it was but it was not plum or duck sauce. It was gross and after initially trying it, we decided to do without. My husband and my stir fry orders were each about a third full, it looked like someone's leftovers. I have never paid so much for so little. Very little meat or vegetable, a lot of salty, oily liquid. The noodle dish had most the noodles stuck together along with a few pieces of dry chicken. My guest ate her noodle meal and promptly reported stomach issues. Because it was a dinner we paid for, we tried to eat it but my husband and I couldn't even eat our meals. Keep in mind this was for a birthday meal. Glad we have birthday cake because no one's hunger was satisfied by what could be salvaged from this meal. This was easily THE worst waste of $60 ever. If you are ever in my position, go spend that money pretty much anywhere else. We suggest Amarin Thai, which we think is the best Thai place around, but unfortunately not open on Sundays. read more

Craving some thai food, so we decided to try this place. It's located in the mall next to Baskin ice cream shop. Place is small but clean, although there was a smell inside of fried food which I not necessarily like. Also, the restrooms are located outside the restaurant, in the mall. Not the cleanest. The service was very good, a young gentlemen who was very polite and nice. I got the Pad Ped curry with tofu and hubby Pad Woonsen with chicken and rice noodles (he's not a fan of bean noodles). Both went with mild plus. The food was very good, although the noodles were a little too salty for my taste. Portions also good size. Will be back for sure read more

Stopped in for lunch. Food seemed fresh and tasted good. Portion size was adequate and prices were in line. I don't know how long they have been open for business but the place is starting to wear. Carpet and furnishings seemed a bit used. Nothing was terrible just seems like things could use some freshening. Service was Ok and the food arrived promptly and hot. Food tasted good as well. This is a very classic mom and pop restaurant serves good ol fashioned authentic Thai food. The atmosphere is quiet, calm, possibly divey, and everyone staffing the restaurant is very friendly. I ordered chicken satay and chicken drunken noodles medium spicy. The satay was prepared beautifully. The chicken had that classic marinade where you could really taste the curried flavor integrated and a beautiful grilled char on the chicken that added that classic bbq flavor. They had an amazing homemade peanut sauce that really elevated the flavors of the marinated chicken. As far as the noodles: they don't hold back on the sauce, and honestly, keep it coming! This is the perfect place for your Thai craving fix!! Ordered takeout from here and tried their tom-yum soup, as well as their drunken noodle. Carry out service was quick, and the workers all seemed nice. The soup was exactly what I needed on a cold day, and the spice of the drunken noodle was solid (I got medium, but you can go even higher). Overall, it is a pretty solid Thai place from what I tried, and I must say the portion size is pretty generous since the noodles lasted me two meals. Decent Thai food in Oakland. I can't say anything blew me away about this place. I had their Tom Yum and a Pad Thai, it was good. Still nothing like the Thai at Bangkok 96 in Dearborn though, but this one is definitely closer for me to home. Been ages since I was last here. I decided to give it another go. Glad I did. Was better than the last time I went. Maybe it went through a change of the guard since then? My hubby and decided on pad Thai with steamed tofu and the massaman curry with steamed tofu and we both enjoyed and devoured the dishes clean. It was a pleasant surprise from the last time we were here. Back for more. Tried out their crab Rangoon and they are crispy and good and you can see hints of red from the crab meat. My first time trying Thai iced tea so I have nothing to compare it to but I really liked it - just the right amount of sweetness. My husband had green curry and was very happy with his meal as well. I don't even know how to start this review as I was sincerely hoping to find an amazing locally owned place that I could get my Thai fix from but unfortunately it will not be from here. For starters we ordered the crab rangoons- don't get them. I order these literally anywhere that sells them and no one in my mind could top Sy Thai. The sauce was cloudy, watery and had no taste. The Rangoon was small with a very strong green onion flavor. Barely any crab and loaded with cream cheese. Not a good mouthfeel or flavor combo going on. Like I said, skip it. I ordered the chicken pad seew and when I received it it was beef. Normally I would have kept it so I tried the beef and it was pretty chewy and decided to send it back. They brought out my chicken dish and I kept finding hunks of beef in it. I'm assuming they picked out the larger pieces of beef and just added chicken which totally grossed me out. Flavor was great though. My sister ordered the veggie pad Thai and liked it a lot. Grandma penn came to visit and kept asking if I was gonna give her 5stars lol. I honestly don't leave many reviews but my wife and I tried this Thai spot as it is closer to home than the place we normally go to on Northwestern Hwy and WOW were we disappointed! She ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken mild and I got the Pad Ped with Tofu mild. She said the Pad Thai was "...not bad but definitely not good though" and mine was inedible. The sauce was watery, the eggplant was undercooked, the dish was spicy, and the tofu had clearly gone bad leaving a metallic taste to the dish. I should also add that I had to go back during rush hour to get the chili sauce I had asked for over the phone and that the bill was $24! Definitely, not worth the price. Save your money for better Thai food elsewhere. read more

Amazing Thai for this tiny, unassuming location. Found the Yelp page for Penn's and plugged in the address of GPS since I had no idea of the area I was in. I had some really spicy shrimp soup with a clear stock and oh MY was is fabulous. Each slurp of the broth had me coughing from the spice (and I can handle the hot stuff) but I couldn't stop or slow down. It was just that good. thankfully, I also ordered the green Papaya salad to cool me down and meet my fruit macro for the day. Green papaya salad is not like the burnt orange colored things we are used to in the grocery. These are julianned firm shreds that has a closer consistency to cucumber than mushy red papaya. Just about nil on the calorie count, cools you off and really tasty with how Penn's prepares it. (the crushed peanuts on top add a nice contrast and flavor) I was getting full but had to try something else, since I didn't know when I would ever have occasion to come back. Enter Sweet Basil Shrimp - mild+ spice level. After that soup, I needed a break from the sweat-lodge I have created in the back corner of the dining room. I also asked that mushrooms be added as it didn't seem like there would be much in the way of veggies with it. Huge shrimp, perfect sauce, fresh wilted basil and in a large bowl. I took two maybe three bites and had it packed up for lunch the next day. I don't know why I waited until the END of the meal to strike up convo with the waitress. She quickly turned me on to the coconut chicken soup - which is her favorite and I had to get one to go too. If you are in the area and want good spicy, healthy food (as in order something with flavor and loads of veggies - not the noodle dishes) this is a great stop. Located at the right corner side of a commercial building. It's nearby dunkin donuts and Gordon food service. You would hear a bell ringing each time a person comes in and out the main door. You'll be surprised to see the owner and the server/ cashier greet as you come in. Since there was no need for reservation on dinner time, we were seated in a booth table of our choice. Service was great because without even asking for drinks, the waitress gave us both a glass of ice water. The menu book was very simple (not so many entree to choose from), which can be a good thing because you won't be having a hard time choosing what to eat . It wasn't that long a wait for our order to be cooked. During those times, you can see some customers coming in and out to pick up take out orders and dining in. The price is reasonable for the amount of food that was served. One order of their entree could be a good serving for 2 persons with a light appetite. For the appetizer, we ordered the platter of crab Rangoon, the spring and curry rolls. The dipping sauce was a bit light for my taste. As for the southern noodles, there was a lot of ingredients such as chicken meat, fried tofu ($1 extra), white onions and greens. Thus I wish there was an equal amount of noodles (delicious). The spice was set on mild and it tasted really good. What strikes the most about the interior of the restaurant is when you sit down and on the table with glass top. You can see pictures of the owner and regular guests. It reminds you that the restaurant can also be your second home, a place with great food especially prepared by the friendly and energetic chef/owner. The thing that bothers me is when you have to borrow a key from the cashier for you to use the restroom. It is located outside the restaurant. My favorite Thai joint. Thai fried rice is my favorite, chicken curry rolls are good and the Tom yum soup flavor is on point (except for the bunch of big onion slices they add). I've been going here for a long time and very rarely have been disappointed. The only downside is the price, dinner time is pretty expensive in my mind for a container of rice - $13 or $14. I searched Yelp, ran into this place, and gave it a shot. I always test new Thai places with Pad Thai. Even the worst Pad Thai is usually acceptable, so it's the safe option. There's is okay, a tad dry for my taste, the medium is a bit hotter than most, and the prices were a bit more than I'm used to paying. It's worth a shot. I'll give them a second chance for sure. I want to give Penn's a 31/2 so I'm rounding up. Penn's is a family Thai restaurant. You get the feeling from both the interior, from the service and from being greeted by Penn herself. She treats all of her customers as if they were regulars. The menu is fairly basic. You may not find your favorite dish, but most of the expected mainstays are there. I really want to like this restaurant more than I did. The service and environment was friendly, warm and inviting. I did not like the spring rolls, the flavor was flat. I'm not sure if this was a result of being frozen or if the flavoring just was not there for me. This was a disappointment as I like my spring rolls. The other dishes I tried, pad se ew and Masaman curry, were good. Of the two I preferred the curry with its warm, peanuty flavor (it also reheated well as left overs). Overall it was a pleasant experience. I did not think the food was great, I do think that there is better in the metro Detroit area. Nice place...didn't knock my socks off but it was good. if this place was in Albuquerque, It'd a strong 4 for sure...but given all the great Thai places around...i.e. especially the other Thai place with the same name...this location is a solid 3 in my opinion. Met a friend here one night for dinner...the service was a little slow but it was also a slow night so, sometimes it's hard for a server to get his/her mojo on...I understand...it happens. that said, the food was just ok...good, definitely not bad in a pinch but again, I'd try another place close by just for kicks and giggles. Since I like to start off my reviews with the good... I'll say this the spring rolls were good and crispy. Unfortunately, the plum sauce seemed oily I tend to like my plum sauce on the thicker side. Three initial impressions: 1. Over cooked: Chicken was dry and chewy and the carrots were soft and mushy. 2. Over Priced: for the $10+ I spent on the cashew stir fry I'd expect more... Penn's is a solid option for Thai. I've been in a handful of times over the years and the flavor profiles are always interesting and food prepped with fresh/tasty ingredients. Lately I've been on a bit of a mission to track down the very best green curry in the Metro Detroit area. This mission is what brought me back into Penn's recently. I must say, while not the very best, it's definitely one of the best I've tried so far in my hunt. Really nice mix of spices, fairly complex but not so much so that the subtlety of the green curry paste is drowned out. The green beans (not-at-all-overcooked) add a nice touch to the dish as well, making it taste somehow greener. This dish is recommended.
