Smallish place that is easily passed up but the food is fantastic. I have been there several times now and no matter what I order, it is delish. The egg rolls are crispy and fresh. Love their all you can eat. If you sweet talk the waitress, they may even add to the buffet if it is missing one of your favorites while you are there. The buffet isn't huge, it is actually rater small, but what they have on it is always good and plentiful. read more

We have eaten at many restaurants serving Thai dishes, and this one is up at the top for us. Everyone makes pad thai, but few make it as good as it was at Bamboo. I don't know if they have a secret ingredient or what, but it was fantastic. And they were kind enough to substitute tofu for us. My husband had the green curry dish with seafood, and it was perfectly flavored with just the right amount of spice. Our server was very nice, and both the owners (one serving and one cooking) came over to see how everything was. The setting itself is sort of a hole in the wall, but those are the kind of places that always have the best food, so we like it. We'll definitely go back. read more

Great food! Had the chicken mango curry and an associate had the volcano chicken. We both asked for. 4 out of 5 for spice level, and it was not disappointing. Everything was made fresh and the host was very cordial and apologized for the "wait" which was not bad since they cook everything as ordered and there were two tables along with some carry out on front of me. You really should try this type of cuisine, Thai/Laotian if you never have before. This is the place to do it! You wield the sticky rice (give it a chance!) as if it were a dinner roll. Break off a chunk in your hand and use it to soak up some of the delicious gravies and sauces. Bamboo is *not* skimpy on their portions of sticky rice -unlike most Thai places-and it is served in a user friendly bowl. My mom lived on the Thai-Laos border and she said the food was delicious and authentic. The restaurant is a mom and pop place, all the food is made to order. This is *great* for us vegans and vegetarians: they can make most of the menu WITHOUT FISH-SAUCE if you ask :) It is difficult as a vegetarian to find a nice curry in a restaurant that is flavorful, and Bamboo's is delicious!!! Drinkably so. The owners are friendly and helpful. It's a small place and it does get busy. We brought our 1 year old here and they bent over backwards to make sure we were all comfortable. My husband and I went to eat there after I get work, inside was hot, I think they didn't have AC if so then I didn't feel anything. My husband and I both got the house special pho, the broth was so bland, it was mainly just broth, they only give my husband and I two jalapeños only, only TWO!!!! WTH!!! Why only two?!? After I put some of the seasons, the broth didn't taste good at all. Our server didn't even check up on you until we were about to leave, but she checked on the table behide me. Bamboo has been consistent with their freshness and flavor every time I have visited. I have been back about 5 or 6 times since my initial visit and have been impressed every time. The green curry is still my go to, but I have tried some of the other appetizers and entrees and enjoy the attention to detail for each dish. I so wanted to live this place as it is close to my home and delivers through EatStreet, i ordered the spring rolls and chicken lo mien for myself as a treat after a busy week day. The order arrived very quickly before I could check it at the door the young man took off on me and left. I found that I had gotten my spring rolls but nothing else I ordered apparently I had received someone else's order. I gave them a call this started a 40 minutes nightmare starting with an older man who told me they did not carry what I ordered and tried to hang up on me. Next I was sent to an older lady who also claimed I had ordered what I had gotten, then she claimed I had not ordered from them as well. I finally explained that I had an order number hoping that would help. Alas it did not do much finally after much yelling at me and people in the background I got what I sort of ordered and it was watery the chicken was half raw and the vegetables were totally raw and it was all cold to the touch. Spring rolls: Awful. Extra long (obscenely so), with no mint or basil. They contained bad dried-up pork (in addition to shrimp), yellow lettuce, and the dipping sauce was thin and lacked flavor. Tom Kha: Worst I've ever had. Bland broth, dry funky chicken, no basil, no thai eggplant. It had enoki mushrooms (instead of the usual cremini slices) and big chunks of lousy tomatoes. Went there to have pho. The service...inattentive. The crab rangoon...flavorless. The pho...skimpy and bland. There were two minuscule pieces of beef and two thinly-sliced pieces of meatball (if combined, would not have amounted to 1/8 of a regular meatball). Here is the kicker, the waiter never brought out the bean sprouts, lime wedges or basil. It's pho, why would you not! That is not unreasonable. He never checked on us. When we politely informed him, he said it was busy. Busy! He could see each and every person in the dining area from the counter! I will forgive service if the food is outstanding. My mother and I are visiting from California and we stumbled upon this place because of Yelp. (Thank you!!) This was one of the BEST Thai restaurants that we have been to. The food was amazing, staff wonderful, and the atmosphere cozy. My favorite part was when the husband and wife who own the place came out and greeted each table! Someone took me here based on an article they read in On Milwaukee. I am glad they did. The calamari a fan fav for me was by far the BEST I ever had. The service friendly and warm, the owners simply amazing! The tea was incredible, I did not need anything other than the hot water. The rice fluffy and soft as well. Had a very good experience at Bamboo. We stopped in on a Friday night around 7PM - the place was disappointingly empty (made me nervous). The atmosphere is sparse but clean. The chairs were the only complaint I had, mine was uncomfortable...But I didn't complain out loud and no one else mentioned it, so take that with a grain of salt. Each table had a tray of condiments, sauces and seasonings to spice up your food. The service was prompt, friendly and very helpful. The server came back at an appropriate frequency to check in. At the end of the meal the cook, and I think owner, came out to say 'hi'. She and the server were both charming. I don't recall what my significantly better half ordered - it was something with noodles, broccoli and beef. It was very tasty. In a rare occurrence, I enjoyed my order more. I had the beef larb. I ordered it with some of the beef cooked and some of it raw. I've never had beef larb, so cannot compare it to others, but this stuff was fantastic - spicy, fresh, and flavorful - I really liked the raw beef. Prices were decent and portion sizes good. My Thai wife and I have eaten lunch here three times in the past month since we come on weekends to the International Market down the block. What a find!! The other guests are usually Asian families, another good sign! My wife is not impressed with most of the Thai restaurants we have eaten in throughout the USA. They usually cook to American taste, which is way sweeter than what you find in Thailand. I am less picky, but can say the flavors of Bamboo are outstanding. My wife says it tastes much like the food she grew up with in Thailand. I love the Seafood Salad. It has a lot of seafood and a great balance of sweet and sour. Get the sticky rice to dip in the sauce! My wife and I agree that the Pho is some of the best we have had, including the ones from Vietnamese restaurants. The broth is outstanding without adding any condiments. I plan on trying the Pad Thai on our next visit to see how that compares to others. I find that the quality of the Pad Thai is a good indication of the overall quality of the menu. I have had many very bad Pad Thai's over the years. As their national dish, they should master it before opening a restaurant. We also liked the fact that the owner/chef has come out of the kitchen on each visit to see how we are enjoying our meal. That adds a personal touch and shows great pride in the product she puts out. With only six tables, I can see then needing to find a bigger space once word gets out about this little gem. read more

I have been here twice in two weeks and both times were extremely enjoyable. Each visit I had the Kow Poon and believe me being the connoisseur that I am of this dish, I have not found any place who makes it better!! It is a plethora of flavors that meld together but subtle enough to depict what's in it. The lemongrass is not overwhelming at all like I've experienced in other places. The larb beef was equally delicious with fresh cilantro flavors that did not over power each other. If there was anything I would have to criticize, and I hate to use that word, it would be the iceberg lettuce. You get a quarter head served with this dish and it is difficult to actually fold or wrap your beef in such a small piece of lettuce. I would have liked some romaine or larger leaf lettuce with this meal rather than the iceberg that is given. Even a half head of iceberg would be better. At least than you can wrap your spoonful of larb beef completely before you bite into it. I am hoping this place stays around for a long long time because I think it has what it takes to experience Laotion food at it's finest. Parking is difficult but worth the walk if you can't find a spot out front of the restaurant! read more

I've driven by Bamboo a million times and never even noticed it and probably wouldn't have even considered it if I had. The location is a little sketch and the restaurant itself does not look that appealing. It's definitely a hole-in-the-wall. After getting some sort of coupon for it, I looked up reviews and was pleasantly surprised and decided to check it out. Very glad I did. The food was great, probably the best Thai I've found in Milwaukee. Prices were also great and the dinner even came with a free beer (or soda). We were excited to check this place out based on the reviews but were disappointed. All the food was only *okay*. The best items we got were the Thai iced tea and the curry rice. It seems they may have changed the menu from even a month ago- saw a picture of the spring roll with a side of peanut sauce. My husband and I are foodies. We like to try new restaurants every so often, so he suggested that we try Bamboo because the Yelp rating was high. We ordered four dishes (papaya salad, tom yum soup, catfish curry and Pad Thai) and was very disappointed with all the dishes. The papaya salad was salty and have too much pad deb (fermented fish sauce), the tom yum soup did not taste like tum yum (tum yum is suppose to be sour, this one was sweet and sour), the catfish curry was too sweet, but the worse of all was the Pad Thai. The Pad Thai was swimming in sauce and the sauce was super sweet I couldn't even eat it. However, the owner was lovely. She noticed that we have a lot of food left especially the Pad Thai and didn't want to pack it. She came to talk to us and asked for our honest opinion. I was quit brutal with my critique. She was very apologetic and did not charge us for the Pad Thai. We would go back just because the owner was very sweet and customer oriented. read more

Heard a mention of Bamboo Restaurant on WUWM's piece on Nat'l Ave development, so decided to go. My grandson has just returned from a 6 month study abroad program in Thailand and is ready to compare the US versions of Thai/SE Asian food. We both loved the pho. The broth was exceptional, plenty of meat and lots of perfectly cooked noodles. The garnishes were beautifully fresh. We also tried the papaya salad med hot, which proved a little too hot for us, but the owner/host suggested we add a little sugar and that seemed to work -very tasty. There are lots of other Thai and Laotian dishes offered that we would have ordered, but we were there for the phobruary special, so we'll be back to this bright and friendly place on National Ave. Give it a try. read more

I have to amend my previous review, the food is still fabulous,but they got new chairs and it's much more comfortable. It a regular stop for us now and the food has always been fresh, well seasoned, and one evening I am going to make anentire meal out of the Crab Rangoon. I see the chef making them by hand in the kitchen and they come out hot and delicious. They definitely are generous with the proteins in their dishes. We had the Pad Thai again and couldn't resist ordering soup to take home for another meal. Amusing to see those lauded reviews posted. Hands down, the most horrifying food I've had in my life. It smelled like ammonia, and solidified in the fridge the next day. The menu was confusing, the service was pointless. I couldn't elicit any recommendations from the 'waitress' OR the owner. There were dead flies on the floor, no toilet paper in the men's bathroom. I wouldn't even consider this a restaurant. Considering the plethora of decent restaurants within walking distance, why bother even using it for a rest room! read more
