Let me start by saying, I want to love this place as it has a lot of potential. The breakfast/brunch options are tasty and you get a lot of food plus a drink for $18. I like the shakshouka or the Israel bagel. Perfect to share with a friend or take leftovers home. That said.... The vibe/ambiance needs some help. They have outdoor space that is amazing, but not a sense of style or that cozy feeling. This extends to interior as well where they could really work on developing more if their brand/look. I also find they are sometimes randomly closed and can be out of stock on items often. But, again, I want to love them and hope they get a groove... which helps with getting traffic.... Favorite cafe in Crown Heights! And the bakery stuff is awesome. Really really good bread. The chocolate babka muffin is to die for!! Lucious dark chocolate, I can't resist it. Bakerie has the rudest barista I have ever encountered in New York City. I ordered a pain au chocolat and had it warmed up. The barista rolled their eyes at me for asking. Then the customer behind me tried to order a drink that was churning behind the counter. She was about to order it but the barista said it didn't taste good. Have generally had a love/hate relationship living steps from this business in the before (Covid) times. Smell of fresh baking bread were a plus. Limited hours and steep prices were a minus. Some items like the focaccia, pain au chocolat and some of the changing sweets were fantastic, on par with the best in the city and worth it. I also had some very overpriced misses (baguettes, cakes, chai, iced coffees.) I had even larger issues with how they treated neighborhood residents of color. The block is mostly black folks and few come to this place and it's not because of the prices- I was very uncomfortable with how clients of color were treated there in my presence. Mostly not overt but be prepared to be ignored- it made me stop going there in the months before lockdown. I mentioned this twice to staff there and my boyfriend (who is black) actually had the owner intervene to serve him on Two occasions after being ignored by other staff because he knew his face. Really just a tiny store front, there were only 4 seats inside but in spite of closing from March-August even though they were mostly a take out business they have now built a giant, street blocking structure the length of the OTHER side of their building, significantly larger than their interior space. Folks haven't been sitting in them much and they don't have furniture for more than half of it. Several neighbors tried to speak to the person building it to no avail. (This isn't gossip, my home offices faces them.) Mostly this has become an evening bathroom/shelter for some passing folks/partying teenagers, blocks line of sight if you're passing on the street and takes 6 parking spaces. I want so many businesses I love to survive this pandemic, but these folks haven't thought through how to be good neighbors to the majority of us, so this response is no different. read more

I live in the area for well over 20 years and was pleased that there was a decent coffee shop in the area. And as soon as I walk in I picked up a sandwich and asked for a large coffee. Not even a good morning, the person taking my order said " you know the coffee is three dollars and change". So I thought to myself it's either she thinks I can't read because I'm black or she thinks that black people wont spend three measly dollars on a good cup of coffee. I have given this place 4 tries and the single star is GENEROUS given how horrendous the service has been each time I've gone in. The yummy pastries can't make up for the rudeness of the barista. He acts as if I've somehow inconvenienced him beyond measure just by entering and wanting to place an order with him. 3/4 times he was on his phone having a full conversation with someone, and then acted like I was interrupting him by just standing there waiting to be helped. I kid you not, one time he turned around said "wait." with his hand up and then turned back around to do something on his phone. A few seconds later he then turned to me and said (I kid you not) "Well, what do you want?" with a tone that confirmed I was inconveniencing him by being there. I ordered a small americano with steamed oat milk. He gave me a large with cold oat milk and handed it to me with a "dare you to say this is wrong" attitude. For the first time in my life I left $0 in tip. Hoping it was just one bad day for him, I gave it another try. Three more to be exact. EACH time was the same. Bakerie is exactly what Crown Heights needed! The pastries are INCREDIBLE. They are made fresh every day and they taste like it! Their cold brew is really good and the baristas are super friendly. Bakerie also makes its own breads and has different spreads you can purchase. I can't wait to try everything out. I also heard that they're going to be offering sandwiches soon. So excited. I used to order cakes, now they don't answer emails. I used to always get my baguettes there; now, it's noon on a Thursday or Friday or Sunday and a french bakery is out of baguettes. The irony. Bakerie is right behind my apartment, so it's a spot I frequent relatively regularly. Pastries are always tasty; I especially recommend the morning bun and the chocolate chip scone. They also sell salads, fresh baked breads, macarons, and third party items like chocolates. I have only had their chai lattes, and their regular chai tastes a bit watery/milky, their dirty chai has a nicer flavor. It is also dependent on who your barista is. I came all the way from Long Island to check this place out with my Husband,my toddler and infant - we came in so excited and ordered almost everything . Right after ordering my husband asked to use the restroom and they said he is not allowed to use the restroom go to the laundry store across the street , he went , and was told there is no restroom there .... meanwhile his coffee was getting cold and i I am left with two screaming kids in a small cafe to handle myself . He begs the manager to use the Restroom again and she still declines and tells him to walk a few blocks down to their sister store basil (in the freezing cold ) he had no choice and went - 10 minutes go by and he calls me that he was not even at basil yet - at this point the kids are eating and i am trying to handle the situation as best I can - when he got back 20 minutes later his coffee was cold and was so upset as was I , because this completely ruined our experience the kids already ate as did I and we were left to watch my poor husband drink his cold coffee and watch me chase after the kids .
