We've been driving by this for a while now and almost every time we say to each other, "we gotta try that out". Well we finally made it! Small converted home type of establishment. Not much space on-premises but they have a number of fridges to take pies away. They specialize in southern pies. Specifically sweet potato pie. So we had to try one of those. If you don't want to commit to a full-sized pie, they have smaller "medium" pies that are perfect for 1 or 2 people to just dig into. We went this route so we could try more. Got a sweet potato pie, key lime chess, peach cobbler, and buttermilk. Seems like everyone had their own favorite. Our girls liked the peach cobbler, I liked the key lime, our boys liked the sweet potato pie and wife liked the buttermilk. They sell at a premium price, but they also contain premium joy! This was our first time here and it was worth finding this place. There are many varieties of desserts and pie. The hardest part was choosing. The lady in the shop was wonderful. She was informative and a delight to talk with about the different desserts. it's a nice little shop and she makes you feel at home. Great spot for some delicious chest pies and cheesecake! The shop itself feels so cozy and warm inside. I was lucky to meet Bill the owner, who told me the shop has been there for almost 10 years and that he makes everything himself. I got a Sweet Bean Supreme chess pie and a Tropical chess pie. Each 3 inch pie is $10.5, which is on the pricey side. However, the fillings are silky smooth. They are also a bit too sweet for me. Bill recommended freezing a quarter of the pie, and enjoy it with a cup of hot coffee in the morning - I will try that next time! read more

The pies here are delicious! At first I was thrown off by the refrigeration of all the pies versus being displayed in a pastry case. I was also confused as to why they didn't accept pre-orders and to just come in and pick the pies you want. As I learned, they have a great system for storing their pies and serving them fresh. They do have a stockpile of pies (mini tarts, medium & whole) and cheesecakes, which are either frozen or refrigerated. I chose 5 different pies: Sweet Potato, Pecan, Key Lime Chess, Peach & Apple for an office gathering - $35 each. The pies are extremely fresh and crusts tender. My favorites were the Key Lime Chess pie and Sweet Potato. Officemates enjoyed the Peach, as that was the first to get polished off. I found the bottom of the crust a little underdone for my liking. I was driving by when my husband said "Pie". Just about caused a traffic accident. I whipped my truck around and came on in. Mr. Hart wasn't there, but his delightful daughter was there. I'm not a huge pie fan but I love me some chess pie. If you're from the south and you went to church down there, then ate at the luncheon after, you know there's some chess pie making an appearance somewhere. And here it is, up in the rain. Mr. Hart's daughter is lovely and kind. She gave suggestions and as soon as you walk in, you can literally smell the pie. It's like walking into a cobbler. I got the tropical chess pie which is a mix of the coconut, key lime, and lemon. Whooo! That's for the sweet tooth. My husband got the blackberry pie and he's the picky eater. He said you can actually taste the blackberries and he'd come back here to buy more pie. We also got some espresso drinks which lent well to the sweetness of the pie. You'll see in reviews that the pies are pricey. Well, yes. But these aren't your typical grocery store pies. These pies are bakery style pies. And if my sister can spent $70 bucks on a piece of log looking cake then I can spend $8.50 on a piece of delicious that will give me happy thoughts for the rest of the afternoon. read more

The pies are expensive, but so addictively good. I was skeptical - and pie isn't even my favorite kind of dessert. However, the pies here definitely blew me away. I ordered the smallest sizes, which were a bit comically miniature for the price. I'd only spring for the small sizes if you wanted to get a sample of the place. The larger ones, I will definitely keep in mind if I have a special occasion or friend's celebration that calls for the best pie I can think of in the city. Had the Pumpkin Pie, Peach Cobbler, Sweet Bean Surpreme, and Tropical Chess Pie. I'd whole-heartedly recommend any of them, especially the Bean and Tropical Chess. I enjoy taste testing different flavors so I created a sampler of 5 different tarts. The pie crust is light and flakey. A well made crust is essential to great pies, and this really hit the mark. Sweet Potato pie - Absolutely delicious! This is by far my favorite. It has full-mouth flavor and is great for savoring! Pecan pie - Surprisingly delicious! Many pecan pies are usually too sweet, tacky and sticky for me. This was not too sweet and it didn't get stuck to my teeth. The pecans are well seasoned and the base is gelatinous. The crust was cooked a little more than the other pies. Sweet Bean Supreme pie - Mild flavor though seasoned well. This is definitely the best pick if you don't have a big sweet tooth. This one had a little thicker crust and I wished it had more filling, but maybe it was an anomaly. Coconut Chess pie - Very sweet and drier than the others. There are sugary coconut flakes on top and a sugary thick base beneath it. My partner tasted a hint of lemon. I have more of a preference for light and fluffy coconut creme, so this style just wasn't my cup of tea. Key Lime Chess pie - Dense and gelatinous, more sweet than tart, ocre colored. This was good, but I prefer a lighter style of key lime personally. I walked in to order takeout. The business is very cozy. There was a customer behind us so we didn't stay long, but I was pleased with the thoughtful presentation of the place, including the interior design, the display case, and the menu. The menu includes different sizes and flavors of pies, cakes, and drinks. Mr. Hart is cordial and a good communicator. The tarts are pricey ($3) for the portion, but I understand businesses are taking a hit during COVID and I've seen prices generally keep rising in the food industry. In comparison elsewhere you'd pay $2.50 for smaller sized macaron or even a chocolate chip cookie. The small size allows you to taste test and find out what you like. I will go back to try the other flavors and buy the better value medium-sized pies of my favorite flavors. I've read negative reviews about the pies being frozen. Unprompted, Mr. Hart recommended warming up the pie in the microwave for 10 seconds. They are easy to pop out of their foil cups without breaking. My microwave heating ranged from 10-20 seconds depending on the pie and they were definitely better warmed up. read more

Tonight, my wife and I walked into "Baked from the Hart", not knowing what to expect. We've always seen it in the neighborhood but have never been. It is safe to say, we were blown away. What a cute little spot. Also, we were joyfully met by Chef Bill Hart himself. He was funny, charming and helped us to find both a great pie and cheesecake for our dessert. We landed on the Banana Pudding Cheesecake (OMG, maybe the best cheesecake I've ever eaten), and the MarionBerry Pie (literal perfection). The crust, the filling, the size, the overall texture and flavor where incredible. A friend recommended we come here, so we did. This bake shop is located in a house and when inside, you'll feel like you're sitting in someone's living room, enjoying afternoon dessert with friends. Since we couldn't make up our minds, and since they offered mini-sized tarts, we decided to get an array and try as many as possible. They specialize in bean pie here. In fact, there's a newspaper article hanging in the "kitchen" area which tells you the story of how Mr Hart started this bake shop. If you're lucky, Mr Hart might just be around and spend a little time chatting to you. SUCH a treat! The owner Chef Hart was so kind to explain all his pie types and offer recommendations. I had never had sweet bean pie before and it was excellent. It's so silky and smooth and perfectly sweet. We also got the sweet potato pie and the tropical chess pie which was lemon-coconuty. I loved all of them but the sweet bean supreme one the best. The crust on all of them was so flaky and perfect. My only regret was not getting the bigger size!! I was looking for a great pie place in South Seattle to order some Thanksgiving pie and found this place - and I'm glad I did. I met with Bill (the owner) who is extremely accommodating and friendly. His place is really close to the Mount Baker light rail station at a kiddie corner. It is warm, inviting, and smells great. This is a place where you can get coffee and a small piece of delicious pie while either studying or waiting for your train. I pre-ordered the blackberry cobbler for Thanksgiving, paid and had no problems picking it up on our arranged date. When I went to pick it up, Bill and his family were pretty busy to say the least! I overhead that they had at least 61 orders of pumpkin pie to finish! Make sure to pre-order your pie if you're thinking of getting anything for Christmas and to pick it up at least 5 days in advance to beat the crowds. You can freeze your pie and reheat it when you're ready to serve it in the oven. I did exactly that (set oven at 350F and had it sit there for about 20ish minutes) and the pie still tasted amazing. I brought it to work and it was a hit! The blackberry gooeyness wasn't at all too sweet and the crust was made just right -flaky and buttery. I got some sweet potato pie, lemon chess pie, and bean pie from Baked From The Hart in Columbia City right by The Original Phillys. So delicious! It took me a couple days to digest the cheese steak and move on to the pies, but they do well in the fridge, and the pies don't disappoint. I had never tried a bean pie before this, but it was good and I'm not even a big fan of beans. It's smooth, not like a can of baked beans or anything.
