A solid three. I wanted to really like this place, a little venture from the usual territory, well-priced... overall, I just felt it lacked a certain something. I ordered the mole enchiladas, which were quite tasty, but again, nothing spectacular, though I must admit, I'm not mole expert. The girlfriend had the fish tacos. Funny, she asked me to taste one of them to see if I noticed anything... nope, just a little bland?? Tasted fine though. Apparently the other taco had had a distinctly past-its-prime fishy taste. Yuck. Old fish. The rest of the meal was fine, I especially enjoyed the homemade chips and the accompanying salsas. I probably wouldn't go back to Baja Bistro, though maybe to try the breakfast if I was right in the area. Ive visited Baja Bistro several times now. Sometimes I just drop in for coffee, other times Ive had breakfast and been to the bar side several times. The bartender isnt very attentive and attitude can be snarky. The food is ok. Ive tried all most all things on the menu. I think its weird they put pesto on it all.. just sayin... But the drinks are decent. The coffee people in the am are nice, I miss the one person who used to bartend but now only works in the am. It would be nice to receive some better service when in the bar. I go out to relax and be attended to, not ignored. Sadly, this is Beacon Hills only bar for now. read more

Friendly staff, Friendly food! Not sure what to make of the catfish tacos, but for the price, it's a good deal. We went during a busy time, so food seem to take forever to come to us. The beef tacos are definitely better than the other options. The best thing about this restaurant is the fact that the food isn't your typical soggy, lard fried mess found at the gringo chains. I finally went to go try Baja Bistro's HH this past week and I sorely regret not having gone sooner! I had heard good things about it but everytime I wanted mexican food I'd end up at Peso's or Barrio. Now I know to walk within my neighborhood to get something so tasty! We went on Thursday and sampled their flavored margarita and cerveza (std Corona w/lime although there is Negro Modelo reg & lite), poblana/onion cream dip, fried potatoe/cheese taco, steak taco (for $2 each- a steal!), cheese enchilada, chips w/salsa, homemade guacamole and their chicken nachos. Only complaint I have is that what I thought was sprinkled on red sauce on the nachos was red chile spiced white chicken meat, which was a small amount. Plenty of refried beans/veggie/cheese, salsa, guac & crema but not enough chicken worthy of it being chicken nachos. The chips themselves are house fried, so that helped a bit. Total bill pre-tip? Glorious $35! We went again the next day and just had cocktails. Same good n' happy consistency! read more

Potato tacos! Seriously! I kept coming back to them on the menu because they sounded so..... ummmm..... weird. But, then curiosity won out and I had to get 'em. Here's what I got: the most amazing corn tortilla slightly fried, filled with seasoned mashed potatoes and slivers of cabbage, and then served with perfect fresh salsa. Dunked in a dollop of sour cream it tasted liked the best loving marriage of a taco and a (chain restaurant) potato skin. And, I mean that in the best possible way. Yum! read more

Growing up, my dad would make chorizo and eggs on Sundays. Now that I only go home a few times a year and I don't trust myself to eat only reasonable portion of said favorite breakfast entree, I seek out places who do Mexican breakfast well - and I can stop looking now. I've been twice now; The first time I strayed from my standard and ordered the machaca and eggs with corn tortillas and absolutely fell in love with what was on my plate. The meat was perfect seasoned and accompanied by a pile of refried beans and potatoes. I have a gluten sensitivity and I usually ask when ordering about gluten in things, but I didn't about the corn tortillas and the second I took a bite and discovered their lovely, chewy texture I realized 1. that I should have asked and 2. that I didn't want to know because I was going to eat all of them anyways - fussy body be damned!. Know that if you do have major gluten issues, you should ask about their corn tortillas you should probably ask because I suspect they're a corn/flour blend, but please, like I said, don't tell me... I'm lying to myself and I don't want you to ruin it for me. My second visit I went back to the old standby, chorizo and eggs. It was good... though I don't know that it can compete with dad's. The flavors went great with the red salsa they brought out, but I was still wishing I'd just ordered the machaca again. They also have breakfast until quite late, which makes those of us who are unable to drag themselves out of bed at a reasonable hour on their days off happy. read more

We were in the area and decided to try Baja Bistro. We could not find parking anywhere near the place and wound up down the block in a residential area. The place is tiny, maybe 8 tables. Wifey tried the Chilaquiles and a side of bacon. These were just a mess, mushy. Chilaquiles are supposed to have some texture and crisp chips. Decent flavor but just a plate of soggy mess. Baja is a neighborhood go-to for me with good mexican breakfast and fish tacos (the potato tacos are yummy too). Go for happy hour (3-7) when they're $2 a taco! The bar is tiny but always a good time and full of interesting neighborhood locals with a decent liquor selection. They also have really good coffee here. The best thing about this place is the staff who are always super friendly and make it feel like a small family restaurant. read more

This is a cool little place I discovered while riding the Light Rail for the first time. It's only a few blocks from the Beacon Hill station. When we walked in, it was pretty busy since it was opening weekend for LINK, but we got a seat pretty fast. We started off with margaritas, me having the traditional and my gf having the pomegranate. They were both good and packed a punch. For my entree, I had the huevos rancheros, which was excellent and reminded me of the food I always had in Albuquerque. This quaint little Mexican restaurant slash coffee house can be seen by anyone traveling through beacon hill on the 36, 32, or 60 (I think). And it appears as though it hasn't been there for long yet still fits nicely in it's neighborhood. My g/f and I went here spontaneously one Saturday morning around 10:30. We had no idea what a treat we were in for. Although I can't remember now what we had, we were both a bit hungover (she had the special and I had something off the brunch menu). Don't take my lack of memory wrong the food was good, and for the price (minimal) it was outstanding. We both had drips with our brunch which was exceptionally good, fantastic coffee here. The waitress was especially friendly and prompt, I gave her a 45% tip as she was that good. Update: I went back here in Feb. '08 and had them same waitress but her service was far worse than my previous visit. My drips were still awesome, but I had to refill my cup myself. She only got a 10% tip this time. One thing I learned from 6 years in the biz is that if you can't be consistent you will never build a solid regular customer base. Baja Bistro is my favorite place to go for Mexican food. And, it's the only Mexican restaurant where my husband feels he gets healthy, quality food. I love their guacomole. I started going to Baja because it was the only clean place to get a strong drink without going broke, and let's be honest, Clayton is a sight for sore eyes. It was months before I even tried the food, but when I did, I was not disappointed. I have tried everything from Burrito Buses to Gourmet(or so they claim)eateries, the tiniest hole in the walls, family chains, and of course drive-thru taco stands...but this place is my favorite. Looking for a breakfast place that is somewhere between here and Costco, we found ourselves at the Baja Bistro this morning. I'd read the almost unanimously favorable reviews on Yelp and was excited to check it out. Mr H loves breakfast and loves Mexican food, so it was not too hard to sell to him on this place. I was disappointed in the Chilaquiles. I was expecting an egg dish with some tortilla strips mixed in, but, instead got just the opposite. There was some egg in there, but I really had to hunt for it. I guess this is traditional and something I just did not realize when I'd ordered. It was tasty enough, but, with the addition of chorizo, which I'd opted for and which was just as sparse as the eggs, this cost over $9, which is a bit steep, IMO, for a dish that is 90% tortilla. We each ordered orange juice. We noticed one of the workers left the building and returned a couple of minutes later with two bottles of OJ that we're pretty certain he'd picked up at the convenience store door. When I order a $3.50 glass of OJ, I don't necessarily expect it to fresh squeezed, but I do at least it expect to real juice and not some 'from concentrate' concoction that comes from the Shell mini mart. The staff were friendly and attentive and did their best to accommodate Mr H's onion allergy (no easy task in a place where most dishes are topped with a sauce that includes onions). There's so many things I've enjoyed from just this one place 1. If you are local to Beacon Hill, their little bar they have to the side is a GREAT place to randomly meet people who are local to this neighborhood. 2. For Mexican food, the ones I've tried gave you very, very generous portions and I ordered one of the few dinners in my life that I literally could NOT finish: A HUGE cheese burrito and a "small" cup of soup, that comes with bread slices to compliment as well. That's saying a lot, I am known for the quantity I can stuff down my throat. The spiciness of their salsa is also a very special challenge. You are warned. ;) 3. They have a drag queen show that I managed to catch once every Wednesday 7 PM. It was the first time I've been to something like that and it was too much to handle. Be sure to bring some cash to tip Atasha Manila! 4. They even have power outlets in both their restaurant and bar. The Chiquilas with Chorizo here are one of my all time favorite breakfasts. Densely flavorful and filling this is a dish for folks that like flavor. Baja Bistro has a full liquor license. If you live on Beacon Hill, take the time to read that again. Yup. You can get a margarita with tequila in Beacon. Oh, yeah. This is not Tex-Mex (check out La Cabana for that.) This is a different region, with different flavors. White goat cheese, used sparingly--not mounds of cheddar. Gently refried beans. Chilaquiles on the breakfast menu. Awesome potato tacos. The servers are warm, cute, and generous. The art changes regularly. We just returned from an outing to Baja Bistro. Based on previous reviews we weren't exactly sure what to expect, and that feeling carried through while pulling up outside of the establishment. There seems to be a bar next door to the restaurant. The bar has a rainbow flag hanging in the window, which left us feeling positive about entering. I'm glad we did. The place has a wall of windows, which to see mid-day probably isn't that spectacular, however to be able to witness a sunset there was really phenomenal. The food was really good! We both had margaritas with our meals and we took advantage of happy hour pricing for those drinks and the kids' meals. My partner had the verde burrito (delicious pork with a kick!) and I had the steak burrito. We also ordered a quesadilla and the chicken nachos. Everything was affordable and there were no complaints about the food quality or taste. We were the only ones there, and I'm not sure why. The service was friendly and fast. We will definitely head back again soon. It's not much to drive past, but I encourage you to go in and check it out for yourself. There are some really great photos on the wall and some other interesting items for folks to look at (masks, etc). The more we discover on beacon hill, the more we are happy we moved here. read more

Eating breakfast here reminds me of the cafes on the shores of fishing town in Mexico. The margaritas are basic, simple and delicious. The stumptown coffee is great as well. Decided to try some local brunch this morning and came away satisfied at Baja Bistro. A short walk down the street from my girlfriend's place and the quaint, mexican bistro came into view. Very unassuming and humble, which seems to be a common theme in the Beacon Hill bars and eateries we've sampled thus far. Definitely not a slight, at least to us, we love these little hole-in-the-walls. Not a lot of seating inside but what they did have was cozy, and we found a small table near the window in the back. There are also a few tables to be found outside in the front but honestly there's no good views to look at from Baja unfortunately. Together, we ordered the Huevos Con Chorizo and the Chorizo Torta. We're big chorizo fans and Baja's chorizo did not disappoint. My sandwich consisted of chorizo and eggs with a nice buttered roll spread with mayo. Really yummy, and like you'd probably expect with chorizo, a tad greasy. The Huevos Con Chorizo plate had the same eggs and chorizo, with refried beans topped with cheese and skillet potatoes. They also came with tortillas to wrap it all up in but we ended up not really eating them. Damn carb watching, ha. The beans were good, the potatoes were solid, but the real star was the chorizo and eggs in our dishes. We'll definitely be back to try out dinner soon. read more

However, the potatoes were still a bit under, and neither they nor the eggs were seasoned at all. Fairly bland altogether. With a little love, the next one might be better.
