They were pretty decent. Smoked wings had a good flavor but just not a crisp to them. Also had the brisket and it was pretty flavorful but it was overcooked, still tender but you could tell it was pre- sliced and left to sit for convenience to serve. Okra was some of worst restaurant wise I've had, way overly breaded. Seemed like something a fast food restaurant would have. Cracker barrel and Capt D's okra is far better. We are so lucky to have found this spot. While in Lowe's during the tropical storm, my husband demanded food...bbq to be specific. I jumped on Yelp and found Backwoodz. It definitely lived up to all the 5 stars! Jordan helped us narrow down our choices by sharing his favorites (brisket and chopped chicken), however he went the extra mile and brought us a large sample of the brisket, chopped chicken and the chopped pork. They were all excellent, but we decided to stick to Jordan's favorites! For sides we chose mac & cheese, coleslaw and the backed beans. So...the brisket was fork tender and delicious, very moist. The chicken was by far the best chopped chicken either of us have ever had. Super moist and flavorful, a nice combination of white and dark meat. The brisket and chicken came with sauce but it didn't need it! The sides were superb! The mac and cheese was hot and fresh, definitely homemade. The coleslaw was crunchy (not dripping in mayo) light and fresh. The beans, wow, the beans. Sweet, spicy, different. I tried wheedling out the recipe but had no luck. sai. I just have to go back! The sweet tea was good and the young man at the cash register hilarious. The barbecue left a little bit to be desired. I'm not sure if I caught them on a bad day but there was a fair amount of people in there eating and a few orders that came in while I waited on mine. Was in town for a wedding & stopped here for a quick dinner. Such a lovely family owned and run restaurant. Jordan behind the counter was hilarious and so friendly. Tuesday October 8th, 2024, Backwoodz BBQ served 2 girlfriends & I a fabulous lunch yesterday. They each had the pulled Pork with fries, one also had a side of cabbage which she said was delicious, I ordered the Loaded Nachos with Pulled Pork and it was wonderful, I had never had Pork over the Nachos before so I wanted to try something different and they didn't disappoint the meal was on point, very tasty will definitely order this again and recommend to others to try. One word: authentic! As soon as I stepped in I knew I was home. Soul/motown flowing and smoke in the air. The host was very helpful with a positive attitude with a lot of pride of this establishment. I ordered the ribs dinner with 3-4 ribs and they were perfect. A simple pop off the bone but not overcooked. The moist pork was full of a deep natural light smoke as it should be. These ribs really set the bar for anyone wanting to taste what true award winning ribs should taste like. Bravo. The baked beans had multiple layers of flavor i couldn't pinpoint. My boyfriend had a taste for BBQ, so I decided to google some restaurants near by, Backwoodz popped up first. I looked at the menu and we decided to try it. Walked in and was greeted by a young man with a great sense of humor! The place was not busy at all we dine in. I ordered ribs and chicken combo dinner with Mac n cheese and cabbage, my bf ordered brisket and chicken with coleslaw and cabbage with cornbread. Everything was flavorful and good. Was in town for the weekend staying in a hotel near the airport. Found this place on Yelp and the reviews were good and the food pictures looked great. Decided to try it for dinner and it's was great! The food was delicious. I had the brisket with fries and baked beans. Brisket was great and the sides were just as good. The sauce they give with the brisket was delicious. Nice flavor and not super sweet. Jordan was so welcoming when we got there. We told him we were first timers and he told us all about the food and what the specialties were. He has a great sense of humor and made our visit very enjoyable. Ordered by phone and was told that food would be ready. The only negative is that I still waited 15 minutes for my order once I arrived. But... the pulled chicken sandwich combo was so good it was worth the wait and kept my rating to 5 stars The cashier bar tender man was so friendly and he area enough to notice my wait. You can taste the cherry wood smoke flavor in the meat. It tastes the same as the great aroma in the dining room whike you wait. The seasoned fries were crispy and tasty. My wife and I stumbled across this BBQ hideout. This was their 4 day open. Generally my expectations would be low for such a new establishment, but we were very pleased! Let's start with the food. It was full of flavor y'all! My wife ordered the Pork Sandwich. She said, "I liked it a lot even thought it wasn't vinegary rather it was a nice smoke and the sweetness in the sauce was nice". I ordered a Brisket and pulled chicken combo. I don't have a lot of experience with brisket, but it was tasty and I really enjoyed it! The fat cap melted in your mouth. The chicken was also very good. It had a very pepper forward flavor. The sides did not disappoint either. My wife loved their collard greens. I barely got a taste. Now that I think about it, I didn't get a bite of that sandwich either. Lol The staff were friendly. We had the pleasure of meeting Oliver the pit master and owner. He was very friendly. They are still getting the place set up. They are only open Thursday - Saturday currently. They haven't gotten their drink machine up yet, but they offered us free Sweet tea or lemonade which was a nice alternative. We hope this place is successful, so check them out! The pulled pork was some of the best I have ever had! The people are laid back and kind, and I had my to-go order ready in just a couple of moments. Definitely overpriced but you do get a lot of food. Brisket was pretty good (7 out of 10), Wings were pretty good (7 out of 10) and Ribs were okay (5 out of 10). Nothing impressed me at all. Fries were undercooked, cornbread was probably cooked early in the day (cold and stale) and Mac & Cheese was decent (6 out of 10), noodles were overcooked but there is potential. Everything had decent smoke flavor but the rubs just did not hit like other BBQ places. Amazing staff that were super friendly. Food came out on a timely manner, and I've discovered the most delicious brisket I've ever had at any restaurant. I travel all around the United States, and this little restaurant in the outskirts of Richmond is definitely my top pick for BBQ and a hidden gem.
