I was in Sandston on a business trip and in the mood for some good Italian food. My hotel recommended Roma Ristorante, and as soon as I walked in, the aroma confirmed I was in the right place. I started with the calamari, asked for it cooked a little crispier, and it came out perfectly--tender inside, crispy outside, and paired with some really nice dipping sauces. For my main dish, I had the chicken piccata. It was beautifully presented, served hot, and bursting with flavor. To top things off, I grabbed a cannoli to go, which made for the perfect finish later. Roma Ristorante brought more than one surprise that elevated them into rare 5 star territory for me. When researching a restaurant by Richmond International they seemed to be an obvious choice. Signage was easy to locate them and parking was not an issue on a Monday night. The parking area and walk up were clear of debris. A hostess greeted my party and immediately seated us in the main dining room with menus. Of note the menus were quality stock. A friendly server arrived for drink orders, I got a glass of house Cabernet. We put in for an appetizer of bruschetta. Our party was seated close to the small bar. The lighting, decoration of bourbon bottle displays and atmosphere was totally on point for me. They were having a Monday pasta night special which was considered. Ultimately with a long travel day and just arriving from the airport I went big and got the Trio. That's a combo of spaghetti, manicotti and chicken parmigiana. Our waitress warned us all the portions are large. My guest got the Lasagna. Both came with salads and bread. The app was pretty good. The wine was just ok, not sure what their house was. The bread warm and yum. Food orders hit the table around 30-35 minutes after ordering which was perfect. It allowed plenty of time for the app, bread and salads. The Trio was enormous and lasagna was formidable. Both were enjoyed and half the Trio was put in a to go. I mentioned to the waitress that I was crazy impressed with their bourbon menu. She pointed out that they offer a bourbon tasting night that always sells out and requires reservations. Desert was up next and they have a nice selection, ultimately the chocolate cake and tiramisu were chosen. They came out within minutes. My tiramisu was nicely portioned, light and flavorful. The chocolate cake was a wow! The close out of the check was smooth. Note they offer a 3.5% cash discount. As we ate desert the owner Antonio came to our table to thank us for dining with them. He learned from the waitress that I enjoyed bourbon. So we talked probably 10 minutes about his menu and more. I learned he has another location by the same name in Mechanicsville that his brother runs. Whenever a GM or owner checks on my table the review is elevated. However it's the rare bourbon menu which sealed their fate as a full 5 stars. They offer bottles few restaurants dream of having and the prices are good. Antonio himself a bourbon lover hand picks the collection. This is a sleeper location so far East of Richmond in Sandston by the airport, but they have their regulars. They have a strong bourbon following which is no surprise. Also they have options for event space. Check them out, I promise you will not be disappointed. read more

Great stop as we were passing through the outskirts of Richmond. The arancini appetizer was delicious. We split a large calabrese pizza--roasted peppers and smoked sausage on a sweet (but not too sweet) marinara sauce. The pizza crust was hand-tossed and tasted wood-fired, with smoky crisp bits. Despite having plenty of the sausage on top, it wasn't even slightly greasy and felt light to eat. After a day of walking through VA parks and historical sites, this really hit the spot! Decent selection of beers on tap, wine by the glass, and a solid+ bourbon menu to boot. Our server was friendly and efficient, the prices were very fair, and service was fast! Service is great. The bread is delicious and when we finished the two rolls, the server asked if we would like more. As a starter we ordered the crab stuffed mushrooms. There were 6 large mushrooms to share. They were great. When finished we dipped our bread into the remaining cheese from the mushrooms. The main dishes were excellent. Ans as usual we had leftovers. The ambiance is pleasant. Nice looking rooms. The main room was full so we got the back room. I really like that area. Away from the main entrance. I decided to end with a cappuccino. There was backup of drink orders at the bar. So had to wait for the cappuccino. The cappuccino is worth the wait. But I couldn't finish. So server brought a take out cup for it. Tiramisu- The chocolate syrup kind of ruined it for me (actual melted chocolate would be better than artificial syrup) so I didn't get a strong espresso flavor. Crab ravioli- It was good overall but it could be better. It tasted like they mixed in imitation crab meat or something else other than just good quality lump crab meat. I think if it was filled with only quality crab meat inside I would have loved it because the pasta and sauce were good. read more

Food was good. Service left much to be desired. Server would not leave us alone to eat. She was there every 2 minutes. Got our salad dressings backwards ( Can't find fault there since they look so much alike) Appetizer didn't come out until after salads were served. Talking at dinner was out of the question since we were constantly interrupted. No plate for the bread to rest on. The plate under the very hot entree could not be retrieved. Had to guard my food like an animal for fear it would be whisked away. Husband had his utensils taken before the entrees were served and he had to ask another server for some. Other patrons in there brought their unruly children who sat in the booth next to us being constantly loud and obnoxious. Other patrons were loudly laughing and carrying on. I am crazy about Roma's and it's one of my favorite places to meet up with my friends for lunch or dinner. I always get the broccoli cheese soup to start my meal. It is the best I have ever had -- ANYWHERE! The cheesesteak is another favorite as well as the vodka penne pasta. The service at Roma's is always first-rate. I have always had a great host or server. I have also experienced the owner coming to our table to ask how things are. When I have come with a larger group of friends they have always been great about reservations. My husband and I visited after a long day driving. We were seated right away and greeted by our server promptly. Everyone from the hostess, to the bartender, to our server were incredibly friendly and polite, full of smiles. As for the food, we have simple tastes and just got mozzarella sticks and a personal cheese pizza. The cheese stickers were crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside. The sauce served with the cheese sticks was so good! The pizza wasn't my husbands style, he liked it but I thought it was perfect! Roma's is a high quality Italian-American restaurant that does a very standard menu of Italian red sauce food generally well with entree prices almost all under $20 for some generous portions. There are really no surprises here. If it's something you expect to see on a typical Italian menu, it's on this one. And they're generally well executed. Most entrees come with a salad option. But unlike many places they will sub soup or a side for the salad. And that's a good thing because the potato and bacon soup is fantastic. Filled with red skin potatoes and hunks of bacon, it's hardy and delicious. Entrees are generally solid. An order of Chicken Parmesan is substantial with a large side of pasta and a nice marinara. The chicken is a little overdone because it's an uneven piece of meat--can't nail a temperature if half the piece is thinner than the other half--but nicely breaded. Shrimp Alfredo comes with large shrimp that are perfectly cooked, but the dish is undermined by a thin Alfredo sauce that doesn't adhere to the fettuccine. The Tour of Italy is massive with lasagna, chicken, meatballs, pasta and more. Few can finish this one in a sitting and it's a solid value. Meals are accompanied by amazing fresh baked large rolls hot from the oven. Too bad they are served with that annoying butter in the tiny plastic tubs with the foil lids. Honor those awesome rolls with butter in a ramekin or at least foil pats if you have to go pre-portioned. Service is generally attentive with good attention to refills. The dining room is pleasant if a bit theme-park Italian (think the decor at Busch Gardens or at Italy in Epcot). Overall a very nice experience each time we visit. Recommended. read more

I was recently in Richmond on business and was searching for a restaurant near my hotel on Yelp. Roma was somewhat close so I took a chance. Food was delicious, staff friendly and bar had some very good whiskey selections including Blantons bourbon. I was thrilled! It was late, I had to get up early so had a glass of white wine and planned to return the next night. I did and enjoyed my favorite bourbon that has become almost impossible to purchase in liquor stores. Sat at the bar, had a very nice conversation with bartender/owner, again delicious dinner and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I highly recommend Roma, just wish it was in Vero Beach, FL where I live! I've been to Roma three times this month; twice for lunch and one carryout, and each time deserves 5 stars. I've ordered and eaten... Roma's Combo Pizza (Pepperoni, Sausage, Mushrooms, Green Peppers & Onions), Fettuccini Alfredo, Cheese Steak Sub, Club Sandwich, French Fries, and Onion Rings. I have no complaints whatsoever. My only nit is that the excellent Fettuccini Alfredo was just a tad watery, easily remedied with grated Parmesan Cheese. My last 2 trips were for lunch, ordering one of the 13 $7.99 Lunch Specials. Total tab+tip is always under $20. I've now tried the Club Sandwich and Fettuccini Alfredo for lunch. Only 11 left to try. I'll get started this week. The store is super clean; all personnel are über friendly, and the food comes out promptly. Mangiamo! read more

Ok we have ordered from them a few times But tonight we were really disappointed to say the least. The veal Parm was good but it was topped With a pasty Tom sauce, these are the Nights I long for home in Boston, where you can get homemade spaghetti sauce t which is equal to none that I have tasted in Va. I'd say prego tasted better than pasty anyway and if you don't know what pasty taste like here ya go, open a can of Tim paste and dilute with some water & presto instant crap, it truthfully I like the Arancini Was good but it should have been larger, pasta was done right but spoiled by pasty Tom crap read more

If I had gone to dinner here by myself, this would have been 5 stars. I had the tour of Italy pasta dish, which is awesome. All 4 components (manicotti, lasagna, chicken parm and spaghetti & meatball) were great, but the chicken parm was exceptional. I don't think I have ever ordered chicken parm in my life, but I might just do it on a future visit. But honestly, any of these 4 as an entree would have been great. My wife's dish, on the other hand, was not very good. She went with the pick and choose pasta special, and ordered angel hair pasta with pesto sauce. Didn't know it until it arrived, but the pesto sauce is more of a creamy sauce, and it kind of made all the noodles lumpy and soft. It did not taste very good. Her dinner was salvaged by ordering tiramisu for dessert, which she loved. Libbie was our server, and did a great job. When we arrived, we were only the 2nd couple in the front dining area. By the time we left, all the booths in that room were full, and she was taking care of all of them, and doing it well. We will definitely come back again, and just not order pesto. read more
