Out freakin standing. Had never been to Frontier, although I sometimes ventured to Churchill for the original Alamo. Food was amazing. Wings- wow. Killer sauce. The smoked-then-fried approach is stellar. Pulled pork is solid. Brisket is better than any I've had in town. Service was killer. It was a slow, late Saturday afternoon and the owner was working, and he couldn't have been more inviting. A pleasure to chat with him. On a recent trip to Richmond I thought I'd try some "Texas" BBQ! This location, in Churchill, is pretty n a prime spot and oozes charm. The bartender (seems like manager) was very friendly and was keen to share his knowledge of the menu. I tried a local brew, which was refreshing and fragrant. I ordered a Texas Trainwreck, which was a choice of meat, pinto beans, cornbread, and macaroni and cheese. Four rating due to lack of flavor on the beans and macaroni. Really tasty, more than excellent portion size. I ordered the brisket topped nacho's. It's the only thing I ordered other than wine so I assumed I could finish it. NOT ....lol. It was very tasty, I particularly like the brisket, very healthy amount on top of the nacho's. The brisket had that smokey taste that I love & that you don't always taste on brisket elsewhere. I like the mole sauce a lot too. Even with Really Trying I could only finish half the nachos. Friendly wait staff, tasty grub, definitely recommend. I have missed the original Alamo as a favorite lunch haunt and thought they were gone forever. Somehow I missed the memo that they had moved and rebranded. My daughter set me straight and away we went. So glad we did! The new place (new to me) is a welcome improvement, with seats actually inside instead of on a patio. Very important in February! The food is as good as I remember, maybe better. Certainly the pork is (once again) the best restaurant bbq pork in the area -- smoky, tangy, a little heat a la Texas style. If I wanted better, I'd have to make it myself. The texas caviar was a little bland, nothing salt didn't help. A pop of onion would have gone a long way. The brisket sandwich was very good, carrying lots of flavor with simple seasoning under the sauce. The accompanying fries were good and hot and were paired with a nice aioli. The mushroom quesadilla (special order accommodated, subbing in shrooms for meat) was surprisingly good. I was impressed with the flavor since it isn't a menu feature. The jalapeno mac and cheese carried a little punch to it, maybe more than the delicate cheese should be expected to stand up to, flavor wise. Excellent rediscovery! Fun decor with a giant bear and longhorn divan pulled us in and we are so glad we followed our whimsy! I had the absolutely delicious and interesting bbq pork enchiladas over a bed of beans and rice with cheese sauce and Cowboy Caviar salad on the side. My husband had the smoked brisket sandwich; tender, flavorful meat...the bun was totally superfluous we will definitely come back and try more from their menu next time we're in Richmond! read more

The food is ok for pre made BBq. My main issue was when you go into the men's bathroom and there is no soap. Especially when it's an all male staff on a Friday night. Makes you wonder if they are washing their hands before going back to work. read more

Used Uber Eats tonight, for some reason unknown Alamo BBQ is not on Uber Eats but its other location, Frontier is. Im afraid to say, not only did they screw up the order and send Soggy Fries instead of the ordered Potato Salad, but the Ribs although as Flavorful as Alamo-BBQ were certainly not Fall off the Bone Tender, but were quite Chewy. Disappointing to say the least. I rarely use uber eats and only used it because DoorDash does not have Alamo BBQ deliveries in this area? I don't know why. All in all a disappointment. read more

Had a great time at Frontier last night! My girlfriend and I met for dinner at 630. We were promptly seated and then assisted by the waitress. We both got the poblano margarita. So delicious, not too sweet, not too spicy, tajin rim (yum). For dinner I had the pork bbq sandwich with collards. She had the half rack with fries and coleslaw. The food didnt take too long to arrive, maybe 20 mins, but we were chatting away so felt like no time at all had passed. The bbq was SO GOOD! It wasn't dry, had a nice peppery/smokey flavor, the sauce was a nice touch but didn't carry the sandwich. The bun was soft and the sandwich didn't fall apart while eating it. The collards were good as well, not over or undercooked. My friend wasn't the biggest fan of the ribs but she enjoyed them enough to eat half of them and she (we) enjoyed the fries as well. The place filled up fast as we were dining but even with all of the tables full, it didn't feel crowded or loud. So glad to have finally checked this place out! I almost couldn't believe my eyes when Frontier finally opened after what felt like waiting for eons. With so few options in the neighborhood, I couldn't wait to switch things up with a new go-to spot for when I can't be bothered to leave the Hill. I went on the 2nd day Frontier was open when it was still technically in the "soft" stage, but I've been back a couple times since then. Yes, the menu is very similar to Alamo (the OG location), but there are a few differences like the chipotle tacos (amazing) and rotisserie chicken. At the moment, I'm convinced that the food here is somehow better than it is at Alamo and I'm not sure why...maybe I just enjoy being able to eat my BBQ inside by a cozy fire in the colder months and that's clouding my judgement. *shrug* Or it could be because it's bright & shiny & new. All I know is that everything I've had here so far (rotisserie chicken, tacos and quesadilla) have all been delicious. The service can be a bit awkward and as someone else pointed out, it does seem like they are trying too hard at times, but I think that will work itself out as business picks up and the servers gain more experience. Long-time Alamo fan and have been to Frontier a few times now. Every experience has been awesome. For dinner, they have a lot of the popular options from Alamo (like the Trainwreck) but also have a lot of new options. I tried the Nachos recently and they were delicious! The portions are huge so come hungry. We also tried brunch recently and were equally impressed. The breakfast burrito is one of the best I've had in Richmond and equally enormous. I was glad to hear that this place opened up. I believe the other location is closed. They still have the same good barbecue food but added some additional items. I ordered take out, and of course, as always my food is quick and fresh. I like that now there is a sit in space with full bar. Prices have gone up slightly. At first, you could only sit outside. I ordered the full rack ribs. They are always juicy and fall off the bone tender. The sauce is very good, not too sweet or too spicy. Next time , I will be sure to sit down and enjoy the feast and surroundings o give a adequate review of the inside and service. They are located right next to the post office. The only bad thing is limited parking. If the street is full , which it usually is , parking is horriblE. Ok so I ordered takeout on another day. I wanted a salad. What I received it was not what I ordered. Listen to customer orders please ! My salad had the onions I did not ask for , only had shredded lettuce and had the wrong dressing. Holy heck, came back to Frontier tonight and our meal was amazing. First off, our server was kind, fun and attentive. Glasses never below half full, and he indulged me in taking a picture of me and my husband. (My husband would like me to add that the bartender had cool hair.) The portion sizes of our meals were HUGE, and my husband who is a bit of a bbq snob loved the smokiness of his bbq pork nachos. My chipotle chicken tacos were delicious and enough to take home for a second meal. We are full and happy over here! read more

Just wow. We aren't sure if it is cocaine waitressing or what... but for a party of four people we were brought three waters. Had to ask for silverware, got two forks and two knives. Asked for more and got one more fork. Really odd. Service was really slow getting to us. And for a place with a reference they did not have any Texas beers. I had hoped Frontier would be moving in the right direction since my last visit, but sadly, it's treading water if not a little worse. I had the rotisserie chicken. The chicken itself, although puny, was flavorful and the taste of mesquite came through, but who had the stupid idea to drown a rotisserie chicken in barbecue sauce? First of all, there is NO mention on the menu that this will be topped by barbecue sauce. Second, it's a terrible idea. You don't take a flavorful rotisserie chicken and douse it in barbecue sauce. It dominates the chicken and mesquite flavors on bites where the sauce is in contact with the chicken while making the skin soggy. The menu says a side of rice comes with the meal, not a side of black beans and rice as I was served--I don't like black beans, so that got sent back for replacement. When the rice came, it was full of onions--more stuff in the food that is not mentioned on the menu. Like it's sister restaurant, Alamo, Frontier likes to put unmentioned surprises in the food. This is a massive pet peeve of mine. I, for one, like to know what I am ordering when I order. It's incredibly arrogant and disrespectful of your diners to put strong flavors like onions and barbecue sauces where one might not expect them when you make no mention of it on your menu. I also ordered a side of cornbread--this was the best part of the meal and some of the best cornbread I have ever eaten. If I had only had this, I would have given the meal two more stars. My fear is I will come back the next time, order it, and it will show up slathered in barbecue sauce and onions without any mention on the menu. Service remains pleasant and remains unsure and confused about the menu. Nice server, but really needs to be better versed in the menu and do a better job of keeping an eye on the tables. There is some good food here, but some terrible choices in the kitchen, some contempt for the diners, and some weak service are going to undermine this place. read more

First off...food was delicious! However, there are a ton of great restaurants in Richmond and what would make us less enthusiastic about returning was how we were treated. We were there pretty early on a Sat. Not busy at all. In 1fact, when we sat down at the bar, a guy who said he was an owner proceeded to complain about business. After taking our drink order we had to ask for a dinner menu twice. Once we ordered, he never spoke to us again. No "how is your food" "do you need another drink?" Again, not busy but he ignored us. We had to get a second drink from another bartender. He did clear our check but did not even thank us. Bizarre experience and we are involved in restaurant industry so were especially befuddled by the lack of engagement. read more

I was really hoping to get my taco fix since Alamo closed, but the tacos are NOT the same. No Texas caviar, spicy-deliciousness, or copious amounts of chicken-- basically just a regular ol' taco now? Mac and cheese used to have small pieces of jalapeño in it, but now it's just a few on top. The chile rellenos looked good, but the flavor was missing/disappointing. Super glad they finally opened!!! All those great smoked BQ items that have made their sister restaurant Alamo so popular are on the menu. Sat at the bar and had a cold beer to start. Discussed menu items with the knowledgeable bartender. He said that the kitchen had been working on the chili relleno recipe as a special and that it was now on the menu. Being a fan of chili rellenos, I gave them a try and boy did they get it right. The best I have ever had. Two large peppers stuffed with cheese and deep fried, along with black beans and rice and a fresh pico de gallo. A real deal at their price. Can't wait to go back to try the rotisserie chicken. I previously left a one-star review but I don't think I was specific enough for people to understand how bad it was. We walked in past the "seat yourself" sign and found an open table. We waited for a few minutes before a waiter came by and gave us a hard time for seating ourselves. If you don't want guests to do something move the sign telling them to do it. We asked for water but they were out of "water glasses" but the waiter was able to provide us with $2 glasses of sweet tea. We just thought he was being a jerk about seating ourselves but didn't really care so we got the tea. Every person on the planet has a different preference about sweet tea so I'm not gonna knock them for that but I wouldn't recommend it to my friends because it was quite unsweet. We ordered nachos which were really good but they don't bring out appetizer plates so you have to pass the tray around the table whenever someone wants a chip but there's still nothing to eat over except the nachos everyone else is picking from. 20 minutes after we ordered the waiter informed us they don't serve Reuben anymore so heads up if you want one it's on the menu but they don't have it. Maybe they were out but we went for lunch and that's not what the waiter said. The bbq platters were not the amazing reviews I read about. The brisket and chicken were dry. Like 0 zero moisture. It was a good thing at this point I was getting refills of water in my sweet tea cup because I told the other waiter it was water all along. This was seriously the worst lunch experience I have ever had and the manager has some common sense issues to fix. 1. If you don't want someone to seat themselves, don't tell them to. 2. If you're out of cups but people need water, have a waiter to take 2 minutes to wash a couple cups. 3. Handheld shareable appetizers need appetizer plates. 4. If you're not serving something that's on the menu, take it off. 5. If the food looks bad, don't send it out (it was so visibly dry and looked nothing like the other pictures on yelp I wish I took a picture).
