This place has gone down hill! Which is a bummer because I just moved to the hill. I went here with my family, and they decided to open an hour late without any explanation or notice beforehand. Which really was disappointed as we were there just a few minutes after their posted opening time and were heading to the beach. And it was chilly and it's outdoor seating only. The beef brisket was too dry and did not have much flavor. Ribs were dry and hard. The cornbread was dry and too corny. It feels like it was just out of the oven or leftover. On top of that, it's 90 degrees at 1 pm, not enough shade tables for us to sit. We went to the park across the street from the reactant to eat. I don't know... Stopped here on our way down to NC because it was in the middle of winter and one of the only dog friendly places we could find that might be able to accommodate us (as they have some outdoor heaters). As many have also said in their reviews, it's a unique little spot with only outdoor seating.. can imagine it gets crazy busy in the warmer months. Luckily there's a park right across the street, so you could probably take your food to go and do a little impromptu picnic if need be. You order from a window and they call you when your order is ready - the food was excellent. I had the bbq and my boyfriend ordered the portabello option, both of which were great. I'm personally not a huge fan of collard greens (not sure why I ordered them, tbh) - wish green beans were an option instead. However, the jalapeño mac and cheese (while no gluten friendly) was excellent - not too spicy, just enough flavor, and a good portion size without being too overwhelming. We also each had a beer / cider (they DO have alcoholic beverages available for purchase, despite that not being listed on their menu - choices are just limited). Parking is also limited - we were able to grab a spot on the street right next to the venue, but can imagine that finding a spot during busier summer months might be more difficult. My dining companion and I typically devour all of the BBQ (and food), but we had to be mindful of dinner plans with other family members so we split a BBQ platter. For our two meats, we chose the pulled pork and the beef brisket. Hooo boy, the sauce on the pulled pork is bomb! It is that delectable balance of sweet and acidic, on every crevice of tender pulled pork. For our three sides, we got the Texas Caviar, Jalapeno Mac & Cheese and the Candied Yams. I would get all three over again! The Texas Caviar has sweet corn, spicy red onion and black beans while the mac & cheese is creamy but with that good kick from the jalapeno. Their Texas caviar was awesome. The meat was ok. The quesadilla was really good. One issue was finding items that were good for kids that are picky eaters. Prices are cheaper than buz and Ned. That is kinda the reason we stopped by here but we realized buz and Ned was worth what we paid for... The ribs weren't really smoked for hours. The chef said that they "braised" (i say boiled) the ribs first and smoked for an hour or two. I cannot say this is real "BBQ" but I did enjoy what I ate. But the way they cooked the ribs was a big disappointment. We also had the tacos. I thought they were pretty for the price. I really need to start listening to my wife, if for no other reason than I don't want her to divorce me on account of restaurants we visit. I picked the Alamo since there were volumes of good to great reviews for this establishment. Sadly, our experience was not positive. First, it may have been in there somewhere, but I didn't see the fact that there was no indoor seating. Yes, I saw pictures of the outdoor seating area, but still expected at least a small indoor seating area. For me, not a biggie, but for some it may well be. My wife ordered the fish tacos and I the half rack of ribs, with sides of jalapeno mac & cheese and sweet potatoes. There were two tacos in my wife's order. I wish I could say they looked appealing, but they did not. The base of the taco was filled with a yellow oily liquid, that for the one remained solidified after an hour. The ribs, well, they were by far the worst I've ever had, period! If you look at the picture area, you'll find mine. First the ribs visually were burnt over large portions, but amazingly they weren't even hot when served. My guess, they were left over from the previous day and reheated. As one might expect, this also resulted in dry ribs, but not universally. There were portions that were really uncooked. Now for the flavor. Since I've never tasted lighter fluid and thus can't say with certainty that this was the taste of the ribs, it really was the thought I had at the time attempting to consumer them. The worst part is that hours later, I was still left with this awful taste in my mouth, even after consuming other items. Now, for the positives and there were two - sweet potatoes and jalapeno mac & cheese. The sweet potatoes were served in about half inch chunks and were seasoned and sweetened well. The jalapeno Mac & cheese had a nice kick, without being overwhelming. Additionally, it was rich and cheesy. The definite highlight of the meal, which sides should never be! In the end, Santa Anna would have retreated, and Jim Bowie and David Crockett would have surrendered had the meal served to my family had been served at the Alamo. Oh and what the hell, toss in a Cuban sandwich for good measure. It all comes up to $18+ plus a free limeade for my Yelp check-in, woohoo! They hand me over a buzzer and it's time to wait for mah food. It takes about 10 minutes for my food. The ribs are well-smoked with a tangy, maybe mustardy sauce. The brisket is decent but a touch under-cooked, could have used a bit more time and tenderness. The jalapeno mac n cheese is tender and tasty, definite winner. The beans and collards, solid. And I take a couple of bites of the Cuban sandwich which is a big handful of que, pickles, mustard and more. Messy and fine but not my favorite (not a huge fan of all the yellow mustard they use here). Overall I really did like my meal although I think my expectations were sky-high after reading about the top 10 ribs list. Everything was solid but I wouldn't say I was totally blown away. This is a hidden gem up on Church Hill. Alamo is really good BBQ. (My own is better, but what can you do?) Pork,chicken, beef, ribs, and sausage anchor the menu. The smell of the wood fire tells you before you order that you are in the right spot. Window order and pick up, outdoor only seating, but it is covered and heated in the winter. I recommend their cuban (your choice of smoked meats) and their texas caviar. Also high on the list of favs is a rack of their good ribs and the jalapeno mac and cheese. Ah heck, the whole menu is good. The only thing that could be improved is speed of service. You can blow 15 minutes of your lunch hour waiting to order and waiting to receive. The Alamo was recommended to us by the staff at Stone Brewing. It's 8 min right down the road so super convenient to have a heavy option among all the breweries. Another Yelper said this location is like a permanent food truck and that's too true. It's like a lemonade stand that started serving BBQ. We ordered 1/2 rack of ribs and pulled pork, pulled chicken, and beef brisket. Ribs were amazing. All the meats were pretty good. We had Mac and cheese and potato salad as sides. If you like it with a little bit of heat you'll be quite satisfied. My work colleague ordered up the Texas Train Wreck. Overall I would say I was very pleased with the food. This is classic BBQ done right. The flavors were excellent and the sides were delicious. I would go here once a week but I need to watch the waistline. Driving up to Alamo you can't help but want to stop. On my visit they had a few logs smoking in a little chimney out front. So you are immediately hit with the smoke you hope to taste in their Q. The smoked sausage was very good and I enjoyed every bit of it. The mac and cheese was also very cheesy and good. However, I have to say I was very disappointed in both the ribs and cowboy beans. On the ribs there was very little flavor in the rub and lacked salt to bring out the flavor of the smoke and rib itself. Same for the cowboy beans as there was no salt/seasoning at all. Had those two items been properly seasoned, this would easily go to 4 stars. I'm surprised this happened given all the great reviews here. It just seemed odd that this wasn't tasted before serving. The rest of my dining party got the Texas Trainwreck (which reminded me of a garbage plate for those familiar with the dish from Upstate NY), 1/2 Rack of ribs, and a Pulled Chicken sandwich with a side of yams. I actually did have the black beans and rice side and it was pretty good! The beans were awesome. Oh, and you can get a free limeade by checking in on Yelp here ;) --Cost: The entirety of the aforementioned food was about $35. So, less than $10 per person. --Atmosphere: We walked from VCU's Medical Campus and there were some areas that were a little sketchy. We were in a group so it was alright, and the actual area around Alamo BBQ is nice enough. The dining area is nice and both the staff and the people that eat there seem down to earth and a good crowd. --Service: We got there as they were opening, and maybe that's why, but it took a bit of time to get our food. We were in Richmond for the Jefferson Cup Boys Soccer Showcase and wanted something different than the chain restaurants. Took a group of around 40 people and to be honest we were a bit worried at first. The patio looked too small to accommodate our group. However, we fit just fine. Better yet, we didn't have a single complaint and the food was excellent. In fact, some of the boys went up to order more food! I had the three meat sampler with Pulled Pork, Sausage, and the Brisket. The pulled pork- awesome, the Sausage- awesome, the brisket - really awesome. Just great BBQ overall! Each of us had 1 bite of the sides, so if you are a large family I recommend getting the 1/2 pint or pint size orders for the sides. We ordered a pint size jalapeno mac n cheese to take home with us! We also ordered the cornbread with honey butter...this is addicting! I can eat it all day! We all loved the cornbread with the honey butter combo. The restuarant is easy to find because of the light pink color it is. Parking was also easy to find, but I am not sure how parking is while there are students at VCU. I went while school was out. It's not a dry rub rib, it has some sauce on it. I forgot to ask for more sauce, but I know when I wanted to bring them back to life the next day, they definitely needed some sauce. However for first day eats, it has a good balance of sauce, smokey char, & natural flavors of the meat. I didn't eat the cornbread (though enough to share between two people if you're not so hungry.) And sadly the collard greens is just a serving for one person (aka the boyfriend in this situation.) For $25 you get a lot of meaty ribs, and two sides. They have a porch area to sit and eat your food there. (They have fans, but I wouldn't eat there if it's super hot.) Was in VA beach for a wedding this weekend and on the way back to DC, had to make a quick lunch stop for the best BBQ in a 200 mile radius of me. Used to come here often when my husband lived in Richmond but haven't been here in almost a year now! And god it was as good as I remember it! This is a complete hole in the wall. Maybe I can't even define it that way because there are no walls. It's completely outdoors. Service is slow, very slow. If you can, call and order ahead so the food is ready when you get there. It usually takes about half an hour from when you order to when you get your food and the delicious smell just kills you the whole time. I always get their pulled pork sandwich and jalapeño Mac n cheese. The mac n cheese is pretty mandatory here. My absolute favorite thing here is the Texas train wreck. Mmm. Pros: Food is delicious. The service is great. The prices are reasonable. The portions are generous. They delivery. I've visited multiple times over the past few years and Alamo never fails. You can always expect the same level of EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD quality with every visit. You could probably order anything on the menu and enjoy it but a few of my favorites are 1. Ribs- these ribs are very meaty and not at all dry. I also really like the ones at Buzz & Neds but these are my favorite 2. Brisket- their brisket is SO juicy and tender. PLEASE gift it a try. 3. Cornbread- I personally feel like cornbread is a MUST whenever I eat bbq... it's sooo goodddd. 4. Sweet potatoes/candied yams (I don't recall the exact menu name)- the sweetness pairs so well with the salty/tangy/sweetness of the meats. I personally wasn't a huge fan of the mac&cheese, but usually prefer mac&cheese that is more creamy and rich. Their mac&cheese was a little more flour-y/gritty than I like. The outdoor seating can be a little dreary when the weather isn't great or it's cold outside, but knowing that- you can make the call on whether or not you'll eat there (or take it home and enjoy delicious BBQ in the comfort of your own home) I would definitely recommend Alamo to anyone and will continue to visit in the future! read more

I've been here a few times and I have never had a bad meal. Its a little nontraditional in the sense that there is only outdoor seating, and in the midst of summer, this place can get PACKED and you may be forced to have an impromptu picnic at Jefferson Park. When I come, I always get the Texas Train-wreck and just end up switching my protein each time I get it. The Texas Train-wreck comes in either a burrito or a just in a platter, I prefer the latter. The Train Wreck comes with "Your Choice of Meat over Mac & Cheese, Cowboy Beans, and Cornbread. Topped with Diced Onions and Jalapenos." I love the messiness of it all and how the cornbread just sops up all the juices of everything. It's heavenly. Also the amount of food you receive is astronomical. It's so much food. You can either leave in an actual food coma and need an immediate nap, or you can have 2/3 more meals. I definitely recommend coming to this place for some awesome bbq! read more
