Stopped here on our way down to NC because it was in the middle of winter and one of the only dog friendly places we could find that might be able to accommodate us (as they have some outdoor heaters). As many have also said in their reviews, it's a unique little spot with only outdoor seating.. can imagine it gets crazy busy in the warmer months. Luckily there's a park right across the street, so you could probably take your food to go and do a little impromptu picnic if need be. You order from a window and they call you when your order is ready - the food was excellent. I had the bbq and my boyfriend ordered the portabello option, both of which were great. I'm personally not a huge fan of collard greens (not sure why I ordered them, tbh) - wish green beans were an option instead. However, the jalapeño mac and cheese (while no gluten friendly) was excellent - not too spicy, just enough flavor, and a good portion size without being too overwhelming. We also each had a beer / cider (they DO have alcoholic beverages available for purchase, despite that not being listed on their menu - choices are just limited). Parking is also limited - we were able to grab a spot on the street right next to the venue, but can imagine that finding a spot during busier summer months might be more difficult. TLDR - Definitely an easy spot to stop for a few minutes and grab a beer and a bite to eat, especially if you're traveling through Richmond with a dog. read more

I have enjoyed their chicken bbq for years. I am grateful that they still have it as I am unable to eat the other offerings. The carry out format works well as you can call in your order and pick up quickly. The gents set up are great as well when it is warm and you want to enjoy your food in the premises. It is not very busy or crowded anytime that I venture there. read more

This place has gone down hill! Which is a bummer because I just moved to the hill. I went here with my family, and they decided to open an hour late without any explanation or notice beforehand. Which really was disappointed as we were there just a few minutes after their posted opening time and were heading to the beach. And it was chilly and it's outdoor seating only. Even after they opened it took forever to get our food, and they were out of quite a few items. I loved their burrito with cornbread when I got it a few years ago but they were out of it this time around. There were way too many beans in it and I couldn't even finish it. & The brisket was wayyy too fatty for everyone. It was so unpleasant eating it as it was so chewy and tough. read more

We looked at the Yelp review on the way to NC and decided to try out Alamo BBQ. We ordered 2 Beef brisket sandwiches and I order of 3 bone taster. They did not meet our expectations. The beef brisket was too dry and did not have much flavor. Ribs were dry and hard. The cornbread was dry and too corny. It feels like it was just out of the oven or leftover. On top of that, it's 90 degrees at 1 pm, not enough shade tables for us to sit. We went to the park across the street from the reactant to eat. I don't know... It wasn't our lucky day and I hope someone has a better experience than us. Ps: by the way, it begins with a 15% tip when you order. read more

Amazing Food!!! Fast Service and the neighborhood vibe is amazing!!! Definitely recommend and going back...

Stopped in for lunch early on a Saturday in May so the weather was nice and decided to sit outside under the tent. This is 'Texas style' tomato based BBQ. I had the brisket which was tasty. I added a side of the Coyboy beans which were flavorful, a bit on the spicy side. I really like their menu selection and will certainly return to try the BBQ & fish tacos. This place has a very casual laid back vibe and free parking near-by. With 262 Yelp reviews and an average 4.0 stars, they are doing something right! read more

Food from Alamo usually is good. However, I haven't ordered from them in a while and decided to order from them today August 28th 2024 through door dash. I ordered the Trainwreck. OMG SMH the beans and Mac n cheese were completely dried out . Food looked like it was a week old. read more

I'm beyond happy this was my first meal in Richmond. The trainwreck burrito is where it's at!!! Mac n Cheese (I would just eat this alone, it's so good), cornbread, beans, and meat all wrapped in tortilla ... literally made my heart sing. My only negative about this place is consistency. I went here on two separate occasions, and the corn bread was hard and stale one time and soft and moist the next. read more

Yum yum and yum! We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon after a trip to Stone Brewery, and there wasn't a line. My dining companion and I typically devour all of the BBQ (and food), but we had to be mindful of dinner plans with other family members so we split a BBQ platter. For our two meats, we chose the pulled pork and the beef brisket. Hooo boy, the sauce on the pulled pork is bomb! It is that delectable balance of sweet and acidic, on every crevice of tender pulled pork. The brisket was a tad on the tougher side, but I could easily have a big portion of the pulled pork and rest in a happy food coma thereafter. For our three sides, we got the Texas Caviar, Jalapeno Mac & Cheese and the Candied Yams. I would get all three over again! The Texas Caviar has sweet corn, spicy red onion and black beans while the mac & cheese is creamy but with that good kick from the jalapeno. The candied yams round out the spiciness in the other dishes, and it is just delicious. I cannot wait to return in the summer to have a full meal here. The neighbors are so lucky to have this so close-by! read more

Great little spot to visit on a nice day. This is a small outdoor restaurant. You order your food at the window. There are tables that are covered. A single bathroom is available on the side of the restaurant t hat you need someone to unlock for you. The food was good. We got a platter with 2 meats and sides. The sides were great. Their Texas caviar was awesome. The meat was ok. The quesadilla was really good. One issue was finding items that were good for kids that are picky eaters. Because it is outdoor you have to deal with the weather. If it is hot you are hot. When we sat down there were big fans. I though oh great these will help with the heat. But I think they were really there it keep the flies away. After we got our food the flies instantly arrived. read more

Just okay. After eating at zzq the day before which was five stars this was a disappointment. I asked what Alamo slaw was meaning what's it in and she goes just coleslaw. I didn't like that it was covered in sauce. The portions compared to 1/4 pound at zzq seemed about the same size. It took fifteen minutes for food and we were the only ones here the whole time. The potato salad was soggy. Customer service just okay not mean not overly polite. Honestly I'd skip it. I can see why on a beautiful Sunday that there isn't a line out of the door. While the prices are great, the food needs to improve. read more

Prices are cheaper than buz and Ned. That is kinda the reason we stopped by here but we realized buz and Ned was worth what we paid for... The ribs weren't really smoked for hours. The chef said that they "braised" (i say boiled) the ribs first and smoked for an hour or two. I cannot say this is real "BBQ" but I did enjoy what I ate. But the way they cooked the ribs was a big disappointment. We also had the tacos. I thought they were pretty for the price. You had a choice of either fish or any BBQ meat stuffed with their coleslaw and Texas caviar. It a bit messy but hey it's good. Their sides are nothing much to write home about. The service was very friendly. The girl behind the counter were helpful. But the place is swarmed by flies everywhere altho i see they tried their best to keep them away. read more

I really need to start listening to my wife, if for no other reason than I don't want her to divorce me on account of restaurants we visit. I picked the Alamo since there were volumes of good to great reviews for this establishment. Sadly, our experience was not positive. First, it may have been in there somewhere, but I didn't see the fact that there was no indoor seating. Yes, I saw pictures of the outdoor seating area, but still expected at least a small indoor seating area. For me, not a biggie, but for some it may well be. My wife ordered the fish tacos and I the half rack of ribs, with sides of jalapeno mac & cheese and sweet potatoes. There were two tacos in my wife's order. I wish I could say they looked appealing, but they did not. The base of the taco was filled with a yellow oily liquid, that for the one remained solidified after an hour. The ribs, well, they were by far the worst I've ever had, period! If you look at the picture area, you'll find mine. First the ribs visually were burnt over large portions, but amazingly they weren't even hot when served. My guess, they were left over from the previous day and reheated. As one might expect, this also resulted in dry ribs, but not universally. There were portions that were really uncooked. Now for the flavor. Since I've never tasted lighter fluid and thus can't say with certainty that this was the taste of the ribs, it really was the thought I had at the time attempting to consumer them. The worst part is that hours later, I was still left with this awful taste in my mouth, even after consuming other items. Now, for the positives and there were two - sweet potatoes and jalapeno mac & cheese. The sweet potatoes were served in about half inch chunks and were seasoned and sweetened well. The jalapeno Mac & cheese had a nice kick, without being overwhelming. Additionally, it was rich and cheesy. The definite highlight of the meal, which sides should never be! In the end, Santa Anna would have retreated, and Jim Bowie and David Crockett would have surrendered had the meal served to my family had been served at the Alamo. For the sake of my taste buds and marriage, we won't be returning here. read more

Alamo BBQ - Burnt and bad tasting Q! - Barbeque Near Me - Richmond, Virginia

After seeing Alamo BBQ written up by the Daily Meal for its ribs, you knew I was going to take a detour on my next trip to VA. And thankfully, Alamo is a quick shot off of I-95, I pull up front and they've got a tent covering the patio area and a small walk-up window to order. Pretty simple menu with pork and chicken bbq, ribs, brisket and a slew of sides. I go with a two meat plate with the ribs upgrade along with the jalapeno mac n cheese, collards and cowboy beans. Oh and what the hell, toss in a Cuban sandwich for good measure. It all comes up to $18+ plus a free limeade for my Yelp check-in, woohoo! They hand me over a buzzer and it's time to wait for mah food. It takes about 10 minutes for my food. The ribs are well-smoked with a tangy, maybe mustardy sauce. The brisket is decent but a touch under-cooked, could have used a bit more time and tenderness. The jalapeno mac n cheese is tender and tasty, definite winner. The beans and collards, solid. And I take a couple of bites of the Cuban sandwich which is a big handful of que, pickles, mustard and more. Messy and fine but not my favorite (not a huge fan of all the yellow mustard they use here). Overall I really did like my meal although I think my expectations were sky-high after reading about the top 10 ribs list. Everything was solid but I wouldn't say I was totally blown away. But for the price?! Awesome deal for the quality of food you get here at Alamo. Deal with the lack of seating and low-brow environs for Alamo BBQ because the meats here are pretty darn good! read more

Seriously the BEST BBQ I have ever had. My best friend used to live a block away from Alamo in Churchill and I would make the weekly weekend trips from Virginia beach to Richmond JUST for Alamo! Everything on the menu is amazzzingg!!! If your new to Alamo I highly recommend the BBQ Platter so you can try a little bit of everythingg! I LOVE the Jalapeno Mac N Cheese, but i wished they put the bigger chucks of Japapenos back in the Mac N Cheese like they used to do when they first opened. I had probably eaten everything on the menu multiple times I'm a HUGE fan of the Burrito, Texas Train Wreck and the texas Philly, OH MY GOD SO GOOD! My friends in Virginia beach are also a HUGE fan, I always either bring back one of the family packs or couple orders of the platters. If you love cornbread you'll love alamo's cornbread it has actually corn in it and it comes with HONEY butter, yum! read more

This is a hidden gem up on Church Hill. Alamo is really good BBQ. (My own is better, but what can you do?) Pork, chicken, beef, ribs, and sausage anchor the menu. The smell of the wood fire tells you before you order that you are in the right spot. Window order and pick up, outdoor only seating, but it is covered and heated in the winter. I recommend their cuban (your choice of smoked meats) and their texas caviar. Also high on the list of favs is a rack of their good ribs and the jalapeno mac and cheese. Ah heck, the whole menu is good. The only thing that could be improved is speed of service. You can blow 15 minutes of your lunch hour waiting to order and waiting to receive. But as any pitmaster will tell you, low and slow is just part of good BBQ. read more

After about a year living in my bookmarks I finally got to scratch Alamo BBQ off the wish list. We went around 11:20am for lunch and I'm glad we did. This place gets packed in a hurry. Parking is always special in Church Hill so good luck with that. I wanted to try everything on the menu but I settled for the pulled pork, beef brisket, potato salad, collard greens, and the much hyped Jalapeno mac & cheese. That mac & cheese doesn't mess around. If you like it with a little bit of heat you'll be quite satisfied. My work colleague ordered up the Texas Train Wreck. Overall I would say I was very pleased with the food. This is classic BBQ done right. The flavors were excellent and the sides were delicious. I would go here once a week but I need to watch the waistline. The only thing they need to address is the seating. Soon as more money rolls in I hope they put some heartfelt attention into the seating arrangements. Aside from that, keep up the great work! The Alamo was recommended to us by the staff at Stone Brewing. It's 8 min right down the road so super convenient to have a heavy option among all the breweries. Another Yelper said this location is like a permanent food truck and that's too true. It's like a lemonade stand that started serving BBQ. We ordered 1/2 rack of ribs and pulled pork, pulled chicken, and beef brisket. Ribs were amazing. All the meats were pretty good. We had Mac and cheese and potato salad as sides. THE MAC AND CHEESE is a MUST. We even got a pint to go. That shit is crack. The potato salad is a skip. It had no wow factor and just tasted old. They lost a star because the outdoor seating is swarmed with flys. They're e v e r y w h e r e. I watched other people eating so uncomfortably with flys landing on their food. You have to constantly swat as you eat and I couldn't stand for it so we just ate in the car. Even the window you grab your food from is swarmed! It's like "ALEX FOODS UP!" and as you grab it there's a toss up of confetti -- except they're flys. YACK! So gross and so sad for such a great place. read more

Driving up to Alamo you can't help but want to stop. On my visit they had a few logs smoking in a little chimney out front. So you are immediately hit with the smoke you hope to taste in their Q. After reading the reviews I went with the BBQ platter w/ smoked sausage and ribs. Sides were the cowboy beans, slaw, and jalapeno mac and cheese. The smoked sausage was very good and I enjoyed every bit of it. The mac and cheese was also very cheesy and good. However, I have to say I was very disappointed in both the ribs and cowboy beans. On the ribs there was very little flavor in the rub and lacked salt to bring out the flavor of the smoke and rib itself. Same for the cowboy beans as there was no salt/seasoning at all. Had those two items been properly seasoned, this would easily go to 4 stars. I'm surprised this happened given all the great reviews here. It just seemed odd that this wasn't tasted before serving. Maybe it was just a one time deal and I hope so. Good Q is hard to find. read more

Remember the Alamo? I'll remember this Alamo! Alamo BBQ has some great BBQ! --Food: We went with my fiancee's parents who visited from out of town, and we each got a different item. I personally had a BBQ Brisket and Cheese in the form of a Philly Cheesesteak (cheese, onions, and peppers) and it was great! The brisket was a touch fatty, but it's to be expected with brisket I suppose. It had some heat from the BBQ but nothing overwhelming. I would get this again but try it with the Pulled Chicken. The rest of my dining party got the Texas Trainwreck (which reminded me of a garbage plate for those familiar with the dish from Upstate NY), 1/2 Rack of ribs, and a Pulled Chicken sandwich with a side of yams. I actually did have the black beans and rice side and it was pretty good! The beans were awesome. Oh, and you can get a free limeade by checking in on Yelp here ;) --Cost: The entirety of the aforementioned food was about $35. So, less than $10 per person. --Atmosphere: We walked from VCU's Medical Campus and there were some areas that were a little sketchy. We were in a group so it was alright, and the actual area around Alamo BBQ is nice enough. The dining area is nice and both the staff and the people that eat there seem down to earth and a good crowd. --Service: We got there as they were opening, and maybe that's why, but it took a bit of time to get our food. It wasn't too long, but it seems like maybe 15 minutes or so. It was a nice day and we were visiting, so no harm done. --Overall: The actual food and dining experience once there was great. If you're in the area and want some delicious barbeque, give it a try! read more

AMAZZZZZIIIIIINNNNNGGGGGG!!!!! Anything that I've ever ordered from that place taste amazing and just wonderful! It's located in Church Hill and their restaurant is mainly outdoorsy. When it gets colder if it starts raining, they have a tent shield to wrap around to still serve their amazing bbq...have I mentioned that their food is amazing? - haha. My husband LOVES their Alamo Cuban, he loves it with the pork, its normally pressed with mustard, sriracha, onions, pickles, jalapenos, and cheddar jack cheese. The bread is very toasty and each bite has a delicious taste and spiciness...no wonder my husband loves this sandwich (it's consider his #1 cuban kind of sandwich ever!) I then order half a pint of their texas caviar and jalapeno mac and cheese. Although I did not get an order of cornbread, it is worth getting! I wish I did get that to go for my husband's birthday. We were in Richmond for the Jefferson Cup Boys Soccer Showcase and wanted something different than the chain restaurants. Took a group of around 40 people and to be honest we were a bit worried at first. The patio looked too small to accommodate our group. However, we fit just fine. Better yet, we didn't have a single complaint and the food was excellent. In fact, some of the boys went up to order more food! I had the three meat sampler with Pulled Pork, Sausage, and the Brisket. The pulled pork- awesome, the Sausage- awesome, the brisket - really awesome. Just great BBQ overall! 3.5 stars. I understand this is a popular place to grab barbecue in Richmond, but it does not quite stack up when I think about some of the standouts I've visited around the country and there are other places I would rather frequent in town. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I went and enjoyed my meal, but this was a check off the list kind of spot. If you live in the neighborhood though, I'm sure it is a go to. It is important to come here with the right expectations, as there is limited seating and I did not see a bathroom. In the warmer weather I expect this place is fun to swing by to have a beer and a bite, but it colder days of winter it is really better for take out. Think of this like a food truck in a permanent location. I was surprised that my brisket and smoked sausage were served already slathered sauce! The brisket was a little off the top side for my taste, but the two meat and three side platter was definitely a filling meal. Jalapeño mac & cheese and the cowboy caviar we're good and a sizable piece of cornbread. I give them credit for having a substantial menu of options for vegetarians, so if I ever return I will definitely try the portobello mushroom. They could definitely work on the efficiency of the ordering process, but the cashier was friendly and came out quickly on a Thursday in early February. I can definitely recommend this place to others, but not quite a wow experience. read more

I was passing through Richmond, and heard about how good Alamo BBQ is so I had to stop by and eat! I ordered the Texas philly. It was so delicious! I loved the sauce that they use for the philly sandwich. You can order it with your choice of bbq. I ordered my Texas philly with beef brisket. I wish my sandwich had a little more beef, but I loved it and enjoyed it. My family got the whole ribs with the 2 sides. We all loved the bbq. It was superb! I loved the jalapeno mac n cheese! It was so creamy with the perfect amount of spice in every bite! We were a little surprised at how small the sides were lol. Each of us had 1 bite of the sides, so if you are a large family I recommend getting the 1/2 pint or pint size orders for the sides. We ordered a pint size jalapeno mac n cheese to take home with us! We also ordered the cornbread with honey butter...this is addicting! I can eat it all day! We all loved the cornbread with the honey butter combo. The restuarant is easy to find because of the light pink color it is. Parking was also easy to find, but I am not sure how parking is while there are students at VCU. I went while school was out. Just average food, but pretty spendy. I was a little taken aback by how little food I received for 20 bucks. We pass this place all the time. By car. By foot. Through delivery apps. I finally decided it was time to try Alamo bbq out. I know how I am about barbecue, I'm picky, I like it done a certain way. So instead of going through all that trouble, we got a full rack of ribs with two sides (cornbread & collard greens) M.E.A.T.Y Yes I love a rib that's meaty. It's not a dry rub rib, it has some sauce on it. I forgot to ask for more sauce, but I know when I wanted to bring them back to life the next day, they definitely needed some sauce. However for first day eats, it has a good balance of sauce, smokey char, & natural flavors of the meat. I didn't eat the cornbread (though enough to share between two people if you're not so hungry.) And sadly the collard greens is just a serving for one person (aka the boyfriend in this situation.) For $25 you get a lot of meaty ribs, and two sides. They have a porch area to sit and eat your food there. (They have fans, but I wouldn't eat there if it's super hot.) Staff is pretty friendly, since it's a couple minutes walk away from our apartment, I'd totally go back and try their other items for sure! read more
