PLEASANTLY SURPRISING MEAL! Visited this BBQ spot on a whim after sitting in line at another fast food place that was taking forever to even take my order. I went inside and ordered a pulled chicken sandwich with baked beans. I was offered a sample of the baked beans before ordering which was a very nice gesture by staff. They were helpful and patient with me as I tried to figure out what to order. I wasn't sure what sauce to get but explained the flavor I was going for to a staff member. He gave me 2 different sauces to try and I absolutely loved the Tupelo Honey Hot. It was so delicious. The pulled chicken was tender and flavorful. The baked beans had brisket incorporated and were really good also. The meal was only $13.33. Definitely recommend if you're looking for some pulled chicken. read more

Solid BBQ place with a great mission as you would think, it's in its name with okay sides. Basically, the review is just this. It's usually a clean restaurant that's relatively busy throughout the day. I just moved across the street from the mission bbq in Midlothian. I was hoping for much more than I got. I ordered the large order of baby backs. No side dishes except for a small corn bread that was about the size of a postage stamp! A very small side of collard greens was $3.49. The ribs were nothing special. To spend $30 for meh ribs and a side is kind of ridiculous. You also eat the meal with plastic utensils and paper plates! Not planning to return so soon! read more

It's a chain. Nothing more nothing less. They make a huge deal about the military but don't offer a military discount. Food is ok. Service is hit and miss. You might get the mumbling "can I halp you" or the "hi welcome" depends. Also. Little disappointed in the turkey sandwich. Like would it kill anyone to put a pickle or something one it. Be nice if they wiped the outside tables off once in while to control the flies but don't expect much from staff these days. We have visited Mission BBQ on Hull St. Toad three times. The first two times we enjoyed our meal. The third time was very disappointing! Ordered a lean brisket sandwich. Every sliced piece of brisket had more than 1/4" fat on it. I do not eat fat and found this very unappetizing. The customer service is good. I doubt we will ever return to this restaurant and do not recommend it. read more

We were craving BBQ and this hit the spot. My daughter ordered kids ribs, which come with a side item (she chose fries) and drink, she also got a brownie and I ordered the brisket sandwich lean. The food was plated (baskets) in under 2 minutes, before we even sat down. The staff was all super friendly. Staff walks around and checks on you and promptly offered a to-go box. The brisket was delicious, although a few bites were overly crispy and hard. The sandwich seems like it should come with something. The kids rib plate had 2 ribs and lots of fries. Although they were a little fatty, my daughter enjoyed them. Both plates seem a little expensive for what you get. The brownie on the other hand was HUGE!! We enjoy trying all the sauces. For me, I like Smoky Mountain by a big margin. My 11yo liked Smoky Mountain and Memphis Belle. Others are good, just different styles based on what you like best. We were there at noon and I didn't realize they play the national anthem every day at noon. Everything stopped and all the staff and customers stood with hands across their hearts, faced the flag, listened silently and clapped at the end. BBQ Perfection with a Hometown Feel By far, my favorite BBQ spot. Though it's a chain, it has the warmth and care of a family-owned restaurant. You can tell they genuinely value their customers. The pulled chicken is tender, juicy, and comes with a variety of delicious sauces to choose from. Portions are generous across the board. The creamy mac and cheese is a standout, and the coleslaw tastes incredibly fresh--nothing like the pre-packaged sides you sometimes get at other chains. Everything has that homemade quality. If you order the combo plate, don't miss the cornbread--it's the perfect touch although I wish the portion was slightly bigger on the cornbread. While I've dined in before, I often grab takeout when I'm alone to leave space for others, since there's almost always a line and every seat fills up fast. The energy is lively, the staff is professional and welcoming, and the owners' mission gives the place a true sense of purpose. They picked the perfect name, because everything here lives up to it. We have been on a search for the best bbq in Richmond, and I think we may have found it at Mission. Although there seems to have been some subtle changes like the bread and mac and cheese, since we started going here, this place is still great on a couple of different levels. First the staff is always friendly and efficient. They answer any questions you have, keep the building clean, look like they enjoy their job, and they get your food out quick and fresh. The shredded pork is flavored perfectly, with a nice balance of smokiness and seasoning. For those who enjoy their bbq drenched in vinegar, this may not be for you. They have a great selection of dipping sauces, to which I preferred the tupelo honey heat (syrupy spicy honey) and the Memphis belle (thick standard bbq sauce). Both are amazing. The Maggie's mac and cheese is amazing, but i wish they cooked it longer. I like a nice crust on my mac and cheese, and sometimes they can make it a bit too gooey. Overall, this is my favorite bbq in VA. I hope they don't change. I recommend everyone to get out and support this amazing veteran owned restaurant by eating some of the best bbq you will have! First time at Mission BBQ. Spotted this one while passing thru suburbs of Richmond. EXCELLENT BBQ! Company theme is to honor uniformed service women and men. The interior of the restaurant is decorated with pictures, awards and patches to honor armed services and first responders. It's a square room, 8 booths along 2 sides, tables of different configurations in the middle. Country music in the background. The room is spotlessly clean... So either this is a brand new store or they're taking great care to keep the place sparkling. Kudos on the variety of sauces and also how they're offered. Each table has a cardboard drink holder labeled with each of 6 choices. The sauce bottles are labeled, non-sticky and full. Smart idea to use cardboard holders... When they get funky they can be thrown away! Food is on point. Brisket is thick sliced, very lean, crunchy bark on the outside and tender, moist and juicy inside. And a hearty portion. This is among the best smoked brisket I've had. Fries are skin-on, crunchy, nicely seasoned. Green beans a little more crisp than I prefer, but slow simmered with pork, onions and still delicious. Plus a square of down-home style cornbread - crumbly and sweet. Not much more you can ask for in a BBQ meal. Also tried a garden salad, topped with smoked turkey. The salad is HUGE, and packed with fresh lettuce, tomato, carrots, onions and cukes. Topped this with a few thick slices of succulent smoked turkey. Delicious. Plus half left over for lunch tomorrow. Last but not least a cup of banana puddin. A great rendition, seemed to be made to order - nothing mushy here. Crunchy vanilla wafers, slices of fresh banana, pudding and a dollop of whipped cream. I've read that this is an up & coming chain with about 100 outlets. Hopefully they open one closer to home soon, I'll be a regular. read more

Excellent BBQ! We placed a carry out order online. It was easy to sign up and get an account. It was easy to place an order. Our food was ready in 15 minutes. Our pork BBQ sandwiches were delicious. The sides were very good. The smoky mountain sauce was sweet and smoky, the Memphis sauce was had a more vinegary flavor, both were good. Our food was well packaged. Ordering was easy, and reasonably quick. So happy we opted for the sampler! Pulled pork, sausage, and brisket. Served with cornbread. All very good! Mac n cheese, potatoes, baked beans, and Cole slaw. I wish the potatoes and mac n cheese had been warmer. Sweet tea and lemonade are both great choices, but there's also fountain drinks and bottled sodas. Military memorabilia nicely cover the walls. The National Anthem is played each day at Noon. The workers are very nice and extremely helpful. They don't offer military discounts but they do have military VIP cards. The restrooms are separated by gender. My mother ordered from the Midlothian location and didn't realize it. They said not to worry and immediately starting working on making the order for me. While I waited he gave me a free drink. We purchased two meals. 1st Turkey plate with 2 sides, bbq beans and fries. 2nd Burger and fries. And 2 drinks. Everything in the first order was delicious, turkey was moist and flavorful, beans were hot and fries were fresh. The meal was served as a sandwich rather than a plate. The second order, the burger was served medium rare. When cut in half, the inside of the sandwich was cool to the touch. Now I have dined at Mission BBQ throughout the Mid-Atlantic area and have come to rely on them for a decent meal at a good price. When we arrived we waited 5+ minutes to place our order while the cashier took a phone order. There were 3 food prep guys just staring at us like we were doing something wrong. There were 2 ladies in what I assume is the office area who gave the impression they really didn't want to be bothered. Apparently there is only one person qualified to take orders and operate the cash register. Anyway, 15 minutes later and $36 poorer we left the restaurant vowing never to return to this unit. read more
