I ordered a Virginia BBQ plate, BBQ sandwich, fries and a canned drink, $16+ with tax. Positive: 1 * french fries were hot and crispy, 1 * BBQ sauce was tasty, Negatives: -1 * When you enter there is kiosk to place your order. The prices at the kiosk include an upcharge for using a credit card. The kiosk lacks signage indicating that you can order and pay cash at the register for a discount. -1* Pulled pork (maybe, not sure) has been cooked and soaked in bbq sauce for an extended amount of time. You cannot taste the meat only sauce. -1* The bbq presentation was one of the most distasteful dishes I have ever seen. It was a pile of red mush, with lots of brown goop, possibly bbq sauce that had been in a crock pot way too long and was stuck to the sides, scraped off an added to my meal. Maybe pulled pork BBQ isn't there specialty. If that is the case, they should change their name. There was one customer present when I entered. The worker or owner was on the phone and did not extend a greeting. Once my food was ready, he indicated that it was ready. I asked if I should take the soda that was included with my meal from the case, and he said yes. Although a sign says otherwise, my food was prepared very quickly. Probably because the pulled pork bbq had been sitting in a crock pot or similar cooking vessel forever. read more

I ordered the Carolina Barbecue sandwich which should have been a vinegar based flavor. It was not. The bun was soggy, the fries were undercooked and I wasn't even offered slaw nor the option of what size fries I wanted. I like big buns and I cannot lie! In Lakeside, this bbq restaurant served up a pretty big and tasty sesame bun with your choice of bbq: VA pork bbq with a tomato base, NC pork bbq with a vinegar base, a rotisserie chicken bbq, or a TX beef bbq. We got the NC bbq and to tell yo the truth, it was rather dry. We added the Cole slaw hoping that would moisten the sandwich up, but that too was dry, not very creamy. I didn't know this at the time, but be sure to order extra sauce on the side for a nominal fee to spice up the sandwich! But, it was ok (the bun was the best part!) They also serve ribs and other entrees. They have a variety of sides, greens, baked beans, potatoes, mac & cheese , etc. and I also ordered hush puppies (which were good) and mini cornbread muffins (again kinda dry)... and we ordered Mac & cheese in our to go order but it was left out of our bag :-( sad face. We also tried the 'nana pudding... skip this... bland and not like your mama used to make. Ukrops makes the best banana pudding! Lastly, I wanted a 1/2 sweet, 1/2 unsweet tea, but they ran out of sweet tea! That's considered a sin in any southern bbq joint!! We really wanted to "pig out" but we weren't hog wild about this place, sadly. Man this place has gone so downhill. It used to be a really decent quick bite to eat with nice portions and tender pork, nice hospitable staff. Ever since the buyout/ownership change, I've given it 3 different shots and each time worse than the last. It's as though the people making this food now have never even tried a pork sandwich, and don't care at all about how it used to be. Everything is dry now, prices are higher, portions are slashed, and the food couldn't be more bland (a few options were already bland before in the old regime). The pork sandwiches are inedible now. Legitimately. That's not an exaggeration-- each 3 times I've given it another shot in the new ownership there is always huge hunks of stiff, tough pork that just doesn't seem right to continue trying to eat. I'm not even sure if it's recently changed owners again for a 3rd time? Staff in there now seems like a group of misfits all wearing their own random clothes. They've gutted the kitchen and added a privacy wall (wierd.. why would you need that?) and added a tacky brick pattern wallpaper like a pizza joint. There's 2 soda machines in there, one is new and the other is just sitting waiting for death. When I was in there a Coca Cola rep was taking pictures of the old machine, and her and some guy were arguing about who actually owned the machine, Coca Cola or him. He was adamant "it was his" which I can almost guarantee you is false and claimed he was taking it back to put in his garage. Whole place is just a major, major letdown now. It's a shame I used to enjoy it for the past 3 years, but me and all my coworkers hate it now. They also added cold subs to the menu which.. nobody ever needs or wanted at a hot bbq joint. You can add new equipment and fill up the place with new gear all you want, but these clowns don't know what the hell they're doing trying to serve bbq, I'll tell you that. This place has fantastic BBQ. It is a bit hidden in a strip of stores, so it doesn't look like much from the outside; however, on the inside, where it counts, Virginia BBQ is a home run. They have a typical menu that you'd expect from a BBQ restaurant, along with a nice variety of sauces. I had the original Virginia BBQ Beef sandwich and it was excellent. Next time I visit, I'm going to try the Texas BBQ Beef. The all beef hotdogs and chili were tempting. Honestly, all of the options looked good. Here's a Pro Tip: There is a brewery two doors down called Final Gravity. They have a comfortable, shaded outdoor patio. Get your Virginia BBQ to go, grab a seat at Final Gravity, and enjoy your lunch or dinner! Final Gravity doesn't serve food, so they welcome you to bring in outside meals. Horrible service and food was no better. The portions were small for the price and the chicken was all pepper so my daughter would not eat it. I was not able to eat it because you could not get anything without the sauce and I am diabetic. The gentleman helping us did not smile or offer any assistance. Stopped in on a whim after an after school activity for my son and seeing that they had a family meal pack. I was thrilled with the meal - for $28 we got a pint of Va Bbq, a pint of beans and slaw, 4 buns and 4 corn muffins - I added on a side of hush puppies, 1/2 pint of Mac and cheese and a drink. With a tip it was $45 - with a TON of food. The bbq was great and different from a lot of other places in the area. It was already sauced and kind of reminded me of bbq I would get as a kid and my son loved it. What I really liked is that the meat was in no way dried out. The Mac and cheese was really good it even had a cheese pull when spooning it out of the container. Baked beans were outstanding and had pork in them and a great brown sugar flavor! They had an extra NC Bbq sandwich they added since it was the end of the night and OMG - that sandwich was HUGE and the vinegar sauce was spot on. The staff was extremely friendly and fast. We went there recently to get food. It was edible. the person there said they bought the recipes from the Va BBQ people who used to run the business. It is not the same. Hush puppies over fried. BBQ ok. Nothing special. However we got banana pudding. The picture shows banana pudding with whipped cream and a vanilla wafer. We got flavored banana pudding. No cookies, no whipped cream. (Review has mistakenly given my location as Laurel, VA rather than Richmond. Can't seem to change it.) We were trying this place for the first time. Smell inside was highly and overwhelmingly anapestic/lemony as if recently mopped. Ordered the chicken platter and two extra sides to split with my wife. She wanted water to drink but drink station was out of order and we were pointed to the cooler with canned drinks. A 12 oz canned soda, by the way, is $3.60. I ordered two additional sides, collards and mac 'n' cheese. Food was brought to our table in a to-go bag. Juice from my collards had spilled over the inside of the bag and dinner container. No plastic forks available from any of the three dispensers, though once I called back to the kitchen for assistance, an employee came out and kindly liberated a couple forks from the non-working dispensers. My wife's barbeque, which we were splitting, was dry and burnt, as if it had been in a warming pan for hours. We tried soaking it in sauce, but it didn't much help. I am loathe to waste food and had taken it home with us, but had to throw it out on a second try. It just was not acceptable. The corn muffins were not great, and one of them was dead hard at center. My wife described the slaw as lifeless. I ate my mac and cheese with a good dosing of salt and paper, but it didn't distinguish itself in any way. Ditto for the apparently unseasoned and disappointing collards. (Collards are usually my favorite food to get at the barbeque joints we routinely frequent in the region.) We liked the potato salad. My wife liked the beans, but I read them as canned. We are pretty easy eaters, and I have never written a negative review before, but we were really disappointed with this meal. Stopped by to grab some lunch and was greeted right out the gate with a smiling face. I got the #5 combo (chic Bbq). Comes with two sides and a drink. I chose the cornbread and potato salad. The cornbread were little muffins of buttery moist almost cake-like corny deliciousness. The potato salad although cold and crisp was a little plain and a few of the potatoes weren't cooked all the way thru however still enjoyable. The BBQ was great, nice a juicy chicken with a little of their Va style sauce. I tried the Sweet and Sassy also which I chose to douse my sandwich in (just the right amount of heat). The BBQ here is delicious...and the sandwich meal deal feels like robbery for how much food you get! I cannot hype this place up enough as you cannot go wrong with any item or any sauce. I never give reviews but I had to after visiting them today. I have lived in Lakeside for 20 years and Lakeside BBQ has always been delicious. However, it is apparently under new ownership and it is not the same at all. I was severely disappointed in the Pork BBQ sandwich which I always get. The pork was hardly cooked and it was served cold, not piping hot with blackened pieces like the previous owners served it. Same with the hush puppies. Barely cooked and served cold. I asked for Cole Slaw on the side and it just a thimble full that didn't cover the sandwich. The vinegar sauce was plain vinegar and did not have the savory spices as what was served in years past. The drink machine was broken. Such a shame the food is inedible now and clearly after receiving quite a few bad reviews, the new owner is not taking the feedback to heart. The gentleman who took my order was so dour, no smile, barely spoke, it seemed like a big effort to take it. I wish you luck sir, in keeping what once was a great restaurant in Lakeside and a favorite place to eat going. Lakeside BBQ has taken a big slide downhill in food quality and service. Very disappointing... the baked beans were the only good part of my meal. I ordered takeout and they forgot two of my sides and gave me the wrong sandwich (which was also cold). Noone was at the register and obviously noone performed QA on my meal before stapling the bag shut. The cornbread muffins are tiny and not worth paying for. Luckily lakeside has many other great restaraunts because this is not one I would buy from again. Decide to give this place another shot since it has been a while since our last visit. In this case, two strikes and you're out! The "Virginia BBQ" tasted store bought. The "baked beans" tasted like warmed up pork & beans with a little brown sugar in it. The potato salad had very little flavor. And don't even get me started on the poor customer service. I've gotten better in a McDonald's. Truly miss the original owners of this place because they actually cared about quality food and exceptional customer service. The food here was great! I saw that they recently changed owners however they haven't changed the great quality and standard of the food. The service was really fast especially for Friday lunch rush, Lakeside bbq seems feels like a small family owned business that focuses on giving affordable quality food to their neighbors. They're Wall of Honor is a very nice touch and gives it more of that hometown type of vibe. Found myself across the street at another business (dropping off my car) around lunchtime. I saw the Virginia BBQ sign and thought that sounded like a great idea for lunch. I ordered the NC sandwich combo with beans and hush puppies as my sides. The fountain drink counter let me mix iced tea and lemonade for my drink (bonus points for an Arnold Palmer) and headed back to the office with my to go order. Back at work, I opened the bag to a giant delicious sandwich. It kept me full all day. So much so that I only wanted a light dinner that evening. We have been here a few times and I feel that I am ready to give it a fair review. BBQ is a lot like pizza in n the sense that many places have different takes on it and while some loyalists will swear that there is only one way to do BBQ, they are missing out. Virginia Barbecue has been around for a while and operates with a small dining room. The menu includes Virginia as well as Carolina (vinegar based) pork along with a beef brisket, rib, and chicken options. I have had both of the pulled pork and they are solid. Personally, I prefer the Carolina style. As far as side dishes go, they have all of the usual, but I have to give a shout out to the collard greens and the baked beans! Delish! The hush puppies were very good as well. There is nothing particularly fancy about the decor of this restaurant, and there really doesn't need to be when the food is that good. It is one of those types of places that when you go there you wonder why you haven't been there more often. I am a sucker for locally owned restaurants and I need to make a point of hitting this one up more often. read more

What can I say about this food other than it makes me look forward to a McDonald's McRib. This place serves a watery pork bbq with little smoke that is finely minced up. It reminds me of the equally disappointing Pierce's BBQ in Williamsburg. I think this place, like Pierce's runs on nostalgia from people that ate here for years and just haven't had the opportunity to try something better. Located right next to Final Gravity Brewing, I stopped there to get a beer and then walked over to Virginia BBQ to pick up dinner and head home. Service was great, they were quick to get our food ready and it was delicious! There are a few BBQ places in Richmond but this one is one of my favorites, great prices, large portions, the location is a bit hidden if you ask me but they have seating inside and it didn't look like seating outside but you could get it to go or grab a seat at the brewery next door. Excited about the location, next to Final Gravity. Was also excited to try to BBQ after some personal recommendations. That's where my excitement ended. Was disappointed overall in the experience. The pork BBQ (VA and NC) were both on the dry side and way too finely chopped up (take it easy on the meat!). Needed a lot of extra sauce (which weren't great). Honestly, the consistency of the BBQ and lack of BBQ smoke smell made me question whether they actually make their own BBQ use an electric cooker, or get it from Sysco, etc. Anyway, probably my least fav in RVA. Bun on the sandwich could have been better (how bout a local bakery?). Greens were awful - tasted microwaved, zero flavor / no heat, and very bitter. Almost as if they were pulled from the can - in fact I'm almost certain of it given they initially served me green beans and I had to go back and ask for the greens and there seemed to be a microwave involved. Cornbread / muffins were nothing special. Service was average at best. They seemed a little short in the kitchen and stressed. Not sure I'll go back. I ordered lunch for my dad told him how great this place was. When we received the food it was awful, the rack of ribs were dried out. The hush puppies were cold and hard, the barbecue sandwiches were cold. I placed an order to go and when I got there I had to wait in line behind four or five men while they put their order in and receive their food. I had been wanting to try this place for a while now because I pass by it all the time and the aroma of bbq is so lovely! The flavors of the NC style bbq were not balanced. I'm not sure what was missing, but it definitely was lacking cohesiveness. The Virginia bbq was on point! It better had been since the name of this establishment is Virginia Barbecue! The Texas style bbq was VERY dry and lacked flavor. In addition to smoking the bbq it has to be properly seasoned beforehand. The fries were bland. The greens were the frozen kind. They were seasoned nicely and was quite yummy. The fried apples had a perfect texture of soft yet a bit of a crunch and nicely seasoned with cinnamon and sugar. However, the container was not even half filled with apples. In conclusion... if you are coming here try the Virginia bbq and the greens and get them to fill the container up with apples instead of jipping you. Would I come here again? Probably not unless someone else was offering to pay, in which case, I would get the Virginia bbq. With that being said... There are SO many other bbq spots in Richmond and the surrounding counties for the same price, better quality, and MUCH BETTER FLAVOR! read more

For years and years I passed this place on the way to my grandma's, but never stopped. Last night, when hubby and I were starving, I remembered that I've been wanting to try Virginia BBQ, so I called in an order for pickup and it was ready within 10 minutes. I loved that they offered Yelp Cash Back, so I saved 7% on my order just by having the Yelp app and signing up. #winning So, unfortunately I hit a bunch of GardenFest of Lights traffic which meant that I got to the restaurant much later than expected. The food wasn't as warm as I'd hoped because of that, but that's no fault of Virginia BBQ. I had a great experience when I came in. The owner helped me out and while I could tell that she was frazzled (they'd just had a big rush), she was very nice. We got the family pack which was $20 and included barbecue, cornbread, buns, and two sides. We swapped the cole slaw for collard greens and also got baked beans. I really enjoyed the bbq and baked beans, but the greens left much to be desired. I would probably try something else next time. Overall, a great place for take out or quick dine in! read more
