While in the area I stopped in for lunch on a weekday. This place is quite popular, as they were not only busy inside, but there was a steady stream of people coming and going. I was quickly greeted and seated... and I noticed they offered a buffet for $12.99, which I find rare to have buffets at BBQ joints, so I decided to take a look at what they were offering and ultimately I chose it. After looking at it, I will say the food looked very "southern style" which isn't very appetizing to look at, but if made right, will taste great. So, I started with a chicken thigh, their chopped pork, and a couple of hush puppies. Those hush puppies were some of the best I've had in a very long time - AMAZING! The chopped pork was smokey and so tasty - I ended up going back for more of this! The chicken was moist, tender, and tasty. I really liked this first portion so much, I went back to try their slaw and a lot more pork, as well as some more of those hush puppies. I have to say - this place is offering a nice deal for this buffet... so, go try it! I'm not able to comment of their other BBQ or smoked meat offerings, as I didn't try anything else. And generally, I'm not fond of NC style BBQ, which this type of chopped pork resembled, but I will say, I was very impressed. The service was very friendly and "down home style" too... I've tried this place twice because I thought my first experience was a fluke. Unfortunately it wasn't. The BBQ just tastes off. It's minced up small, and doesn't taste like pit-cooked pork. It's like if you told a Yankee about BBQ, and he bought some of the ingredients and cooked them in a crock pot. I know, that's mean. But, it's no more rude than my server both times I went. And the second time I was with my daughter who even complemented the server on her accessories. I won't be going back a third time. read more

To get the rating out of the way, I give it a 2.5 but I bumped it to 3 due to the experiences and comments of my fellow diners. Let's start with the good: The restaurant had a classic BBQ style ambiance befitting of a well loved establishment, and, like almost every restaurant I have been to in Virginia, the staff were very nice and accommodating! So why this ranking? To begin, Brock's had a buffet that contained a few things that I was looking to order, but I am typically against judging a restaurant based on a buffet as you never know how fresh the food really is. Thus, I ordered a pulled pork platter with coleslaw and Mac-n-cheese. Upon first bite of the pulled pork, I felt betrayed. I opted to not order from the buffet to see them at their best, but the meat was lukewarm bordering towards cold. While the taste was decent, it felt as if it might have been pulled from the buffet. The mac-n-cheese was also disappointing, also being lukewarm but slightly warmer than the meat, it had what I can only describe as clumps of cheese sauce surrounding near barren noodles. The saving grace for me was the coleslaw. Pretty solid. Some of my fellow diners enjoyed their food more than others. The grilled chicken Caesar salad was "mediocre," the salad loaded with croutons. The Brisket platter (not pictured) was (in a slightly positive tone) "ok." Mind you, it appeared that the brisket slices had been thrown on a grill... hmmmm. And finally, the pulled pork sliders (also not pictured) were "good." This establishment is a middle ground, it's not bad, but it's not good. If the food was warm, it'd have a better grade. But overall, the best part was the price, my pulled pork platter clocked in at $12 a very solid and respectable price for a BBQ establishment! Maybe they had an off day. While I personally can't endorse Brock's, I am not opposed to trying them again and possibly revisiting this review in the future. read more

**3.75 First time in. Folks were friendly inside, and sat me right away. There's plenty of seating with a few tvs throughout for anyone interested in the daily sports updates. I ordered the Pit-masters sandwich, which was pulled pork topped with sliced brisket and bbq sauce on a sesame seed bun. It's was a large sandwich at a great price point. Brunswick stew was my side and was perfect on this cold day. A really good stew. I didn't get much smoke, if any, from the bbq sandwich. I went here for lunch last Wendsday. I got the buffet and got fried chicken livers and sides. There was a foot long hair fried into one of the chicken livers. Needless to say I wasn't hungry anymore. So showed the waitress, she just gave me my check. And they made me pay full price even though I hadn't eaten but one bite of their BBQ, when I saw the hair, due to their poor hygiene in the kitchen! DO NOT EAT HERE. And what they call BBQ is super finely chopped pork parts that taste like they were cooked in a Crock Pot. No smoke or anything. This place is disgusting!!! Yesterday I had locked myself out of my truck and Brock's was closing in 20 minutes.. the staff was so nice and understanding they let me sit and wait for a locksmith to come and help me. The service here is top notch. I'm from the deep south originally and they have some full on southern hospitality, which I am a big fan of. There were ample clean dishes, no empty serving trays on the buffet - which I ordered. The food was mostly okay. Nothing great, but nothing I had to spit out. Hubs ordered a plate that had - among other things - a completely inedible thing of ribs on it. Visually, it was entirely gristle and cartilage and you could tell by looking at it that it was not going to have any type of edible meat on it. Luckily, once Hubs mentioned it to the server, she did bring out a replacement that was actually edible, so again, the service is awesome but the food... I guess I am just a little spoiled when it comes to BBQ places because generally, you smell that they have meat and fire out back, rendering out the fat and smelling delicious and letting you know that the food has been barbecued. This was lacking all of that, so I'm just not sure we will ever actually go back. read more

Ordered hush puppies (good!), onion rings (good!), curly fries (good!), brisket sandwich with 'slaw on the side (sandwich good, slaw just okay), minced pork sandwich, no slaw (dry pork, but good), chicken salad sandwich on wheat, no tomato (small, just okay- they were out of croissants), and a side of Mac and cheese (super small portion, bland). Overall, I'd try it again once they're open in order to eat the food right out of the oven/off the grill/out of the fryer because all of our food items were room temperature and soggy once I got home. Pretty good. Not great, but good. Ordered the special of the day which was the open faced brisket sandwich. It came with two sides. I chose fried okra and baked beans. The okra was excellent. It's my favorite vegetable, so it's hard to ruin it for me! The beans, however, were straight from the can. No seasoning, just good ol' Bush's baked beans heated up. The menu claimed the brisket was "smoked for hours", but it sure didn't taste like it. No smoky flavor at all. It was tender, but too fatty, and definitely not smoked. Service was great.
