Great down home quaint restaurant. They offer a small area for dine in ,quick customer service. Great fresh fish. The side dishes could improve. Great deals on lunch specials. They used to give more bread with the fish but seemed to cut back. Cashiers are always friendly. If you go during rush hour , prepare to wait for a while for your food. Fresh cakes are available to enjoy. I love the chocolate, cake is moist but would like my icing to be a big chocolatier tasting. Overall great place to eat besides seeing the equipment and material on the sides of the store. It's an eyesore and should be kept in the back.

I can't wait to try this place it sounds like it's awesome place and looks great to eat at first time

I ordered 30 pieces of trout and bread. This was absolutely terrible fried fish. i have never seen fish served with this amount of bones, spine, and fin still attached. It's like no one took time to actually prepare the fish. This is supposed to be a fillet not a whole fish so this makes no sense. The worst part is that the fish looked like it had plenty of seasoning, but no flavor whatsoever. The little flavor that it did have on the crispy parts tasted like chicken grease. if i didnt live over 20 mins away i would bring it back for a refund. But instead after picking apart 5 pieces we will just throw the other 25 pieces in the trash and cook food at home tonight. Hawks has a great reputation in Richmond so we decided to finally come here and we are truly sorry that it didnt live up to the hype because we eat out on most weekends and love soul food at black owned businesses.

The best fried trout in town. Excellent dessert such as chocolate cake. Very good service online and in house.

The meats here were very good - extremely tender with a nice smoky flavor. I was personally a huge fan of the spare ribs and my girlfriend loved the prime rib (which I have never seen at a BBQ place before!). The sides were a bit lackluster and just ok, but service was friendly. While a bit pricey, I would definitely come back just for the meats! Meats: Brisket, Prime Rib, Pork Spare Ribs and Sausage Links Sides: Jalapeño Mac and Cheese, Potato Salad and Collard Greens

First, let me preface this by saying that I grew up in North Texas for the majority of my life…read more Second, I've had a LOT of BBQ during that time. Well known standards from the area including Angelo's, Railhead, Heim's, Cousin's, and a lot of old places that are no longer in existence. Each one offering its own spin on a Texas standard. Upon moving to Virginia, I hadn't ventured out to any of the BBQ joints, but one of my associates from the office would often talk about ZZQ. I had assumed that Virginians had a concept of BBQ that was akin to shredding some meat and pouring BBQ sauce on it. So, I finally had the courage to visit ZZQ a few weeks ago to pick up an order to go. I arrived just before opening time on a Saturday morning. There was a line that extended just down to the street. Probably 40 feet or so. Figured this would go pretty quickly once the doors opened. I was wrong. After 15 minutes, I had only moved about 5 feet. The line was building behind me, but simply appeared to have gotten stuck somewhere in front of me. After about 40 minutes, I had finally made it to the front door. Inside, there was another line up to the cutters. There were menus to peruse and a large sign with all the cuts and sides you could think of. A great variety. As I got closer to the front, I realized that it wasn't the cutters causing such a slow procession, but the customers. As I listed to them talk, most seemed to have absolutely no clue what they wanted at all. Did I mention the menus and billboards? They seemed to want to chat about food and prep more than just order. Had this been in Texas, the mob of a line would have escorted you out. When you get to the cutters, you know what you want. No time to dilly-dally. I got up to the cutter and placed my order. I was getting a variety, so I went for 1/2 a chicken, 1.5 lbs of sliced brisket, a couple of sausages, mac and cheese, cole slaw, and sauces. The cutter gave me a chunk of the brisket. Definitely moist, a bit overly fatty, but tasty. Their idea is the "meat has enough flavor so that you don't need sauce." He also mentioned they smoke with oak wood. Good to know. The taste is good. Probably as close to a Texas style as you can get, but with some small exceptions. Mesquite wood is often used in Texas for smoking. Plentiful, but obviously costly to transport outside of Texas. It has an exquisite flavor that is just right for BBQ. The second is the sauce. I like sauce...GOOD BBQ sauce! Unfortunately this is where ZZQ falls short. I didn't care for their sauce at all. Too vinegary and liquidy for the lighter sauce, and too heavy with molasses with the other one. So, I had to make do an whip up a small batch of homemade sauce at home that helped to bring it together. All the folks at ZZQ made it for a nice experience. Definitely customer oriented and friendly. I think the BBQ is as close to Texas-style as you can find in these parts, but kind of a miss on the sauce. Still, I can either make my own or buy a bottle at the local store if I want. Definitely worth a try, but you will need patience with a barrage of people who clearly have a lot of questions about BBQ.

But follow the smell of smoke into that little cut and you'll discover some seriously good BBQ. First and foremost, the food had me excited, but our interaction with the owner made the experience even better. Welcoming, funny, genuinely personable, and incredibly patient while walking us through the menu. That kind of hospitality matters, especially at a neighborhood BBQ joint, and it immediately made the place feel like somewhere you want to come back to. Now to the food. The Pork Belly Burnt Ends were the standout for me. Melt-in-your-mouth tender with that beautiful combination of smoke, sweetness, spice, and rich pork flavor. These alone are worth knowing this place exists. Definitely one of those hidden-gem dishes in RVA that deserves more attention. The brisket and pork ribs are absolutely worth a visit too -- smoky, flavorful, and exactly the kind of meats you want when you walk into a place with BBQ in the name. The sides held their own as well. The collard greens were properly seasoned and cooked just right, and the mac and cheese was rich, creamy, and delicious. Nothing felt like an afterthought. Then there are the sauces. SMOHK isn't just giving you the same three bottles you see at every BBQ spot. From the Smoked Apple BBQ sauce to the Gochujang BBQ sauce, there's a real range of flavors here that lets you take the meats in completely different directions. Traditional BBQ roots, but with enough creativity to make the place feel like its own thing. SMOHK is a different kind of BBQ joint -- tucked away, full of personality, creative without forgetting the fundamentals, and serving food that makes you glad you followed your nose. Don't blink when you're driving by. This one is worth finding.
