I saw this place on tik tok and told myself I would stop by and visit the next time I was in Richmond. My son had a basketball tournament, and this was the perfect time to stop by. I pulled into the parking lot and this place has a unique setup. All the tables are outside similar to checkers. The place looks like it belongs in a dessert or South of the Boarder based on the color which is odd as well. They take your orders at the walk-up window. When I originally arrived, I didn't see much business but while I waited for my food the cars were pouring in left and right. My hopes for the food increased. There is a menu on the outside that is somewhat difficult to read and navigate. A ton of options with some whopping prices. I ended up ordering the 1 Snack and Fries. I wanted something good but also light as I had another place in Richmond I wanted to try. $14.99 seemed good until I saw this bogus, Local meals tax on top of the state sales tax. This caught me off guard. I ended up waiting in my car for about 20 minutes and later heard my name called over the microphone. The gentleman showed me the food, and it was 3 large pieces of fish. The fish was delicious. The fish was Cooked well, and I could taste the flavor. Way more than I expected. Tartar sauce elevated the flavor. The fires were piping hot and good as well. I wish I had some ketchup, but they were still good. I loved that they were salted but if I had high blood pressure I should have stayed away. You can see the salt on the fries. They were good to me. Best place to get fresh, succulent deep fried oysters in a flash! I treat myself to their dinner plate with bettered fried okra as a side. It's a bit of an investment, but the freshness and food quality is excellent. The wait staff and window folks are courteous and very competent. I've never been disappointed. Well I'm kicking myself for not trying this place long ago. Today's visit was great. Walk-up window for placing orders. Friendly gentleman taking our order. Me and my bro both ordered the fish and shrimp combos. Mine came with fries and coleslaw, and he got Mac & cheese, fried okra, & cornbread. You get 4 filets and 4 medium/large shrimp. My fish was catfish (up charge) and he got the Whiting. The fish was fried perfectly. Well seasoned. The shrimp were a little lacking in size and less flavorful. Fries were great. I recently visited Sugar's Crab Shack and finally got to try their food! The special combo of wings, popcorn shrimp, toast, and fries for only $19.19!! Along with the snack meal that came with 3 fried fish and buttered toast. I also got the mac and cheese, and bread pudding. Beware that the wait time does take a bit, the food took about half an hour to be ready. But the generous portions made it worth the wait. The workers were also very nice and you could tell how passionate they were about the food. The popcorn shrimp and fried fish were pretty good. But the mac and cheese could use a bit more flavor, I could mostly just taste cheese. But the fries--wow! They were super big, thick like wedges, and extra crispy, adding a great texture. The bread pudding was just okay since i'm not a huge fan of raisins, but overall, it tasted like French toast if you're into that. Despite the wait, my overall experience was great. Friday 3/22/2024 This spot right here is a black owned restaurant that absolutely gets it RIGHT. I got the 2pc catfish special $10.75, snack & fries $11.85, and bread pudding $5. Both the fish and the catfish were very good and the tar tar sauce is a great sauce for it. I'm a fan of the fries as they were crispy and seasoned well. The bread pudding was a bit smaller than i expected and it comes with a lemon glaze icing on the side (which it didn't really need but that's just me). The bread pudding smelled amazing and it tasted pretty good as well. I 100% recommend this spot and I would definitely come back if I was ever in the area again. read more

Visited this location based on my sister's recommendation. I travel to Virginia several times a year to visit family. My sister who lives 30 minutes from the location had me try it. It should be a crime how many times I've hit up this Richmond spot. I always get the same thing: Snack & Fries (fried fish, fries, buttered toast) with a side of potato salad - and honestly, I don't even try to mix it up. For me, today, it was 47 degrees outside, I feel they should have heaters to warm the area for those standing outside for long periods. The portions were generous, my coleslaw was placed in the bag, and the top was open sho it wasted everywhere. Amazing! Don't get turned around by the lack of curb appeal. The layout is actually nice but a bit drab looking. Apart from that can I tell you everything we ordered was excellent. Super fresh. Made to order so expect a well worth it wait. Id honestly give them 6 stars. Very disappointed, I am a regular at Sugar's Crab Shack and never had any issues with food, always high quality and well seasoned seafood. Today however I ordered the 13 jumbo shrimp deal with two deviled lump crabs. The fried shrimp batter pretty much fell off the shrimp so I just had lightly breaded shrimp with most of the fried batter at the bottom of the container. Then the most disgusting thing of all was a dead insect in one of the deviled crabs, after taking a few bites I luckily found it, and I honestly almost threw up. I doubt I will eat the other one I ordered I'm so disappointed to have wasted money on this. I'll take this as sign to just stick to the fish, but just be aware of what critters may be inside of the deviled crab if you do decide to order it, this is sad as it was my favorite go to item up until now. read more

They are also located across the Street from 4th Precent. Plenty of parking available while you wait. One of the most impressive things was how clean their inside was. I was scoping it out as I waited. The floors was clean and free of any grease or clutter. The place where they cooked the food was the same. Says a lot since it fries most of their food!!!
