Been meaning to go here for a while based on all the great things I've heard about The Smoky Mug. I was not disappointed when I finally had the chance to check them out. The food and service were top notch. We sat at the bar which gave us a good view of all the happening. There is plenty of room to sit inside as well as out. I am a sucker for smoked turkey and was extra excited to hear they still had some. That with the greens and potato salad was the perfect. The turkey was flavorful and juicy. The greens have just the right amount of spice and the potato salad cooled it down. Can't forget to mention the tortillas! So good! I will for sure be back. read more

Good brisket and pulled pork. The hatch man & cheeses was tasty as was the potato salad. The fried potatoes were meh. They are very stingy with their bbq sauce. It's good but not amazing and we had to ask three people to get some. Weird! The design of the space is nice. read more

Smoky Mug is one of my go to spaces for a quick delicious meal that consists of smoked meat. They have brisket, carnitas, chicken, homemade tortillas, chicken salad, pork belly, avocado toast, cocktails, sausages, banana pudding and i've tried it all! All of their food is amazing. A small disclaimer is that they run out of the pork belly and brisket often so if you want to taste it go early. Smoky Mug has become a very chill lounge space since they expanded. The service is always top tier. I highly recommend them if you are in the mood for smoked meat. read more

Much needed food spot in Northside right in the corner of BPB and North Avenue. A few off street parking spaces, a patio and ample indoor space as well, including a small bar with alcohol! Stopped in for a breakfast bowl and was a little disappointed. It took about 15 minutes to get it even though they weren't very busy, and the potatoes tasted like they had been sitting out for a while. Not fresh. And overcooked as well. The added chorizo was a little sour spicy. Presentation was lacking. My favorite thing here has been the overnight oats and the avocado toast that I used to get from the old location. I'll go back to that. Great spot to park with coffee and your laptop. Very glad they're here. read more

I'm on the hunt for the best breakfast burrito in Richmond, so I had to try The Smoky Mug. We visited on Labor Day morning, and it was very busy with families, which was a good sign. Even though we had to wait in a long line, it was bearable thanks to the beautiful mural on the main wall and the many plants throughout the restaurant. The staff were super friendly and moved through the line quickly. We ordered the breakfast burrito with eggs, hatch green chiles, cheese, and their homemade tortilla. We added bacon for some extra crunch. Our food took about 20 minutes, but we understood since it was so busy. The burrito was well-seasoned and soft, but also had a nice crunch and lots of cheese. There were plenty of different textures and flavors. It was a good size for the price, and I was very satisfied. Overall, The Smoky Mug scores high on the breakfast burrito scale, and I'll definitely be back to try their BBQ. read more

I love the new space but on a weekend it was chaotic and crazy. They need to work on their system to bring the food out. Maybe give people numbers on their table or something. The food came out and wasn't labeled and the drink came out way after the food that being said, it was a very good coffee and unique flavors and the breakfast burritos were incredible. They have a nice outdoor space and it is dog and kid friendly. They do have a bar and some good drinks on tap as well. read more

Visited the new location on 8/22/25. The inside space is to die for - the wall mural is absolutely stunning and they decorated with such tasteful and comfortable furniture. Since opening the new space, they're still working out a few kinks, but that didn't change this visit still being absolutely spectacular and amazing. To note as of 8/22/25 - the website states the lunch and dinner menu is served after 11:30am, but when we came (4:30/5pm on a Friday), they were only serving the happy hour food menu. I'm not sure if this was a one time thing or will be this way long term. Regardless, the HH menu prices are fantastic. The street style tacos are not too small and you get two for $5. My only complaint is they were all a little dry and could have used crema or another condiment in addition to the green sauce. The smoked wings - AMAZING. Sooo tender, meat fell off the bone, amazing flavor, and pairs perfectly with the house made ranch. The nachitos bowl was the perfect size - not too big or small. The space is lovely and I love the little outdoor space which a lot of kids, and parents, seemed to enjoy. Got the breakfast burritos and it was yummy. Another reviewer mentioned my same thought about how we wished the potatoes could be a little crispier. The salsa that came with it was great. My toddler enjoyed her pancake with lots of whip cream. The Smoky Mug is as must visit when in Brookland Park. The people are great, the food is good, and the vibe is amazing. This coffee BBQ hybrid is a fun concept. Upon entering, you walk into the cafe side, if you go further down, you'll enter the BBQ side. There is seating in the cafe side and then outdoor seating available under a big tarp. There are a lot of options for seating. As for parking, there is free parking nearby and as well as bike parking or bus options. Whenever I'm taking pottery classes at Hand/Thrown I like to visit the Smoky Mug for a little treat. They have a selection of teas, fun coffees, and a chai lattes. I hope they offer Matcha Lattes one day. Their food portions are super generous here. And the meats are quite yummy. Do know they're greasey, but that's the point!! The best thing I've ever ordered here was the Sopapilla with brisket which was a Duke's Hot Tomato Summer special. I highly recommend checking out The Smoky Mug. read more

My meal was okay. I got a chicken salad sandwich and was disappointed to see that my toasted bun was actually cold. It did get eaten tho as I was starving. I wish it had more to it as I was still hungry after eating my entire sandwich. The smoked chicken salad was really yummy. I was disappointed to hear they didn't have any regular chicken left. We were not the biggest fans of the Mac and cheese and the brisket was a bit tough for our liking but it got the job done for the time being. Their house made mustard is bomb!! I also tried to get a receipt printed and the machine bugged out and I was sent to the other side of the bar and the person on the other side sent me back and no one ever got me my receipt and I was just kinda standing there without anyone addressing me for a while. So all in all the service wasn't great. The food was ok. I probably wouldn't come back but I'm happy to have tried it. It seemed very white washed to say the least. We need to break out of idealizing Eurocentric culture. I did noticed they have a happy hour. food is good but recently they started charging $0.85 for a side of salsa, when it used to be complimentary upon request. The principle of this is very sad and disappointing, i've been a loyal and consistent customer and to see the price adjustment come through for almost a dollar for just a side of sauce? yuck. I understand that we are all trying to make it work but almost a dollar? when it used to be free? that's so damn annoying. Lost a customer based on that alone, but i'm sure they'll be fine. i'd also like to add for context when i say $0.85 for a side of sauce, it's the standard small ketchup size. i also swear that they used to have the bigger sauce cups especially when the price was adjusted i was like oh well at least it'll be like a decent side of it (like 4oz), and then it wasn't even enough for my burrito :/ like the tiny 1oz container. sorry if this is dumb to complain about but .25 for sauce, fine .50 is pushing it .85 is just stupid. i just wish yall would've charged like that from the beginning :/ read more

The Smoky Mug is one of my favorite neighborhood spots to frequent, especially in the morning when I need a jolt of caffeine on my way to work. There is nothing like a good latte. I don't know how the baristas are so pleasant at 7am! lol My favorite thing to order here is the smoked chicken salad. It is soooo good, and I haven't found any other places that make it. It's such a quaint spot in the neighborhood. The best days to go are Sundays in the spring and summer for brunch so you can eat outside on the patio. read more

The food was okay, but overpriced. I ordered to go and ended up spending ~40 for a pulled pork plate with Mac n cheese and slaw, refried beans, collards, chips and queso and 1 smoked sausage. I found the slaw to be too salty. The chips were seasoned with a bbq rub which was yummy but did not pair well with the queso dip. Portion of side dishes was roughly the same portion as the bbq sauce. ~1/3 cup or so. Pork was tender, but had too much black pepper for my preference. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito with beef via the DoorDash app. First, it was a nightmare trying to place the order. I've been trying for WEEKS. Either they offered an extremely limited menu (coffee and bagels) that day, or they weren't open to receiving orders at that time. I finally ended up placing an order to be delivered in two days. I did exclude the hatch green chiles from the burrito because I don't like chiles. That's the only change I made. The burrito was large and the ingredients were plentiful. But it was almost completely tasteless. The potatoes looked seasoned, but didn't taste seasoned. The beef was very tender and smoked, but also unseasoned. There was a peppery paste or something in there, but it had no taste other than pepper. I did not see or taste any salsa roja at all. All I tasted was pepper and smoke. Technically, this burrito would have no problems filling you up. But I can't see how it keeps getting rave reviews for flavor and crispy potatoes when it has no flavor and the potatoes are soft and mushy. This was definitely not the experience the reviews led me to expect, and my disappointment is significantly amplified by how hard it was to even order the thing to begin with. I loved the old Smoky Mug and I like the new place as well. The new space is really awesome. They added smoked chicken wings to their menu and they are pretty great. I will say that the draft beer glasses were smaller than what I expected for the price. I expect beers to come in 16 ounce pint glasses and these were somewhat smaller. I will also say that the ordering process was a little awkward. You order your food on one side and pay then order your drinks on the other side and pay. I think that the hiccups will get ironed out. read more

Ok, first off, I have no idea how I had not heard of the Smokey Mug before last week when I saw them listed on the best bbq in RVA. Naturally, we had to check them out. They are a coffee house breakfast spot( featuring chewys bagels) AND a BBQ/tex Mex lunch place. With a small bar......what else do you need? We will be back for coffee/breakfast and more BBQ They do have a small parking lot ~6 cars, then there's street parking 2 very small tables in coffee shop, outdoor picnic tables for BBQ. Friendly service, fresh food! They ran out of buns, so Anthony had a taco. I ordered a cowboy plate - one meat, 2 sides, tortilla, pickles, and sauce Brisket was super tender, juicy, and flavorful. Turkey was smoked perfection. Sides were OK. Mac n cheese is very cheesy, I personally would like it without the chilies. Pickles were very vinegary. Espresso bbq sauce was awesome,with a hint of a kick to it. Tortillas are homemade using brisket fat OMG!!!!! I arrived at 3:00 on a Sunday and was told there was nothing left but sausage and chicken salad sandwiches. It was my first and only visit. I lived in Colorado for about 10 years and they had amazing breakfast burritos. So, I was craving a breakfast burrito. I did a search on Yelp and this place came up. I noticed that it was in a coffee shop but didn't think anything of it at the time because you never know. Later in my reading, I saw that it was attached to a barbecue place, so then I got excited. I went. Tiny little place, packed with people. And when I say packed, I mean four people because it was so tiny Lol! The staff there seemed very friendly. They were talking to customers and each other like they were all friends. I ordered two chorizo burritos. I wasn't sure what to expect as far as size, so I ordered two. The lady took my order with a smile and she said, they would call me when it came out. About 10 minutes later she called me and I got my burritos and went to my car to eat them. These burritos were the best burritos I've ever had in my life!!!! They had shredded potatoes strings which were deep-fried and so crispy. They were like fried tortilla strips. The chorizo had nice spice, not too much, not too little. I thought the salsa or pico de gallo that was on there was really good. Looks like they were made with 8 to 12 inch tortillas. Even though they were bigger than I thought, I was able or was "forced" to finish two! I have also been there two more times in between going and this post. I would highly recommend! I will definitely be back and maybe even try the coffee. Also, based on that experience, I will have to try the adjoined barbecue place as well. Thanks, and please don't change the recipe. P.S.
