Great first experience. My husband and I started with drinks that aren't pictured but were delicious. I had the Pear Pressure, a spiced sparkling cocktail and he had an old fashion. I also had the chips and salsa flight with queso beans and salsa. I wanted the guac but they sold out. The queso was my favorite. For my main meal I had the chicken tacos which were pretty good. I wish there was a better distribution of the slaw and salsa because the chicken itself tasted a little dry. My husband ordered the brisket and ribs and enjoyed everything. They ran out of ribs and offered him burnt ends instead which he also enjoyed. The Mac was too cheesy for me but hubby liked it. Overall we will be returning as he mentioned the prices and flavors were better than some of the other bigger named BBQ spots in the city. I've been to The Smoky Mug a small handful of times. The BBQ has always been quite good, but this is the first time I've visited the new location and also tried their brunch, which we made a reservation for. The Location: Parking was very easy since there's a small lot beside the building, but it fills up fast. Luckily, street parking doesn't seem to be too bad. There's an outside patio with seating, but it was raining, so no one seemed to be out there, although it is covered. A lot of great work was done on the interior. The whole vibe is sort of Southwestern Americana, with warm and comforting tones, wall murals, lots of great natural light, and a gorgeous bar. We sat at two small tables that were pressed together to accommodate our party of three, but both tables were very wobbly. I tried to do the trick where you shove a folded paper napkin under the bottom edge, but then realized the table wasn't wobbly at the feet but rather at the top of the neck just under the tabletop. The Staff: The host and the server were very friendly and welcoming. They were incredibly warm and attentive people. The Food: They have a full coffee bar, so we ordered a cup of regular coffee and also an iced vanilla latte. The regular coffee was good, but the iced vanilla latte that came out was just a regular iced latte with no vanilla flavor or syrup. They fixed it, though. We mainly came for the chorizo, which is our favorite, and the last three times we've tried to order takeout, they've run out of chorizo early. They were also out of it for this visit. The server thought they were making more and went to check with the kitchen, but then found out they couldn't make any more because they were out of a specific spice mixture. We ended up ordering a breakfast burrito with pork belly instead of chorizo (it also contains egg, potato, cheddar, and Hatch green chiles inside a homemade flour tortilla, with salsa roja on the side), the biscuits and Hatch sausage gravy (it comes with diced potatoes, which I don't believe are listed on the menu), and the pitmaster's taco (brisket, bacon, potatoes, refried beans, egg, salsa roja, onion, and cilantro on a homemade flour tortilla). The breakfast burrito was good but without the chorizo, it's just not the same. Also keep in mind that their breakfast burritos are a bit on the smaller side compared to many places, so be sure to order two if you have a big appetite. The food arrived quickly, but unfortunately both the biscuits and gravy and the taco were cold, which was odd. The potatoes were warmer than the biscuits and gravy and seasoned really well, but the sausage gravy was quite bland and the biscuit was very dry. The pitmaster's taco had incredible flavor and great ingredients, but the fact that it was cold just sort of killed it for me. I do enjoy their regular BBQ menu, and I would recommend people go there for that, but I most likely won't return for brunch. read more

Been meaning to go here for a while based on all the great things I've heard about The Smoky Mug. I was not disappointed when I finally had the chance to check them out. The food and service were top notch. We sat at the bar which gave us a good view of all the happening. There is plenty of room to sit inside as well as out. I am a sucker for smoked turkey and was extra excited to hear they still had some. That with the greens and potato salad was the perfect. The turkey was flavorful and juicy. Stopped in for a breakfast bowl and was a little disappointed. It took about 15 minutes to get it even though they weren't very busy, and the potatoes tasted like they had been sitting out for a while. Not fresh. And overcooked as well. The added chorizo was a little sour spicy. Presentation was lacking. My favorite thing here has been the overnight oats and the avocado toast that I used to get from the old location. I'm on the hunt for the best breakfast burrito in Richmond, so I had to try The Smoky Mug. We visited on Labor Day morning, and it was very busy with families, which was a good sign. Even though we had to wait in a long line, it was bearable thanks to the beautiful mural on the main wall and the many plants throughout the restaurant. The staff were super friendly and moved through the line quickly. We ordered the breakfast burrito with eggs, hatch green chiles, cheese, and their homemade tortilla. We added bacon for some extra crunch. Our food took about 20 minutes, but we understood since it was so busy. The burrito was well-seasoned and soft, but also had a nice crunch and lots of cheese. There were plenty of different textures and flavors. It was a good size for the price, and I was very satisfied. The renovation looks amazing! I was stunned and hopeful to revisit after a couple of years. Service was quick and friendly, and the space was charming and comfortable. Brought my husband to try it since he's from Texas and missing a bit of home. To my dismay, there were only two non-pork meat options on the menu, neither of which he ended up liking. The brisket was terribly dry, and although the barbecue sauce had nice flavor, it couldn't make up for the lack of moisture. He didn't mind the turkey breast or the collard greens and thought the mac and cheese was pretty good. It reminded us of mashed potatoes with how soft and creamy it was. The pork belly was juicy and delicious, though! We rarely eat pork, so we were quite pleased with this one. We also ordered two non-alcoholic kombucha-based beverages, which he said was the highlight of the meal. I was really hoping to brighten his day here, but sadly it fell short of his expectations for Texas barbecue. All in all, we paid about $75 for two cowboy plates and two drinks. To not enjoy the majority of the meal, unfortunately I'd have to say trying it wasn't worthwhile. read more

Smoky Mug is one of my go to spaces for a quick delicious meal that consists of smoked meat. They have brisket, carnitas, chicken, homemade tortillas, chicken salad, pork belly, avocado toast, cocktails, sausages, banana pudding and i've tried it all! All of their food is amazing. A small disclaimer is that they run out of the pork belly and brisket often so if you want to taste it go early. Smoky Mug has become a very chill lounge space since they expanded. Visited the new location on 8/22/25. The inside space is to die for - the wall mural is absolutely stunning and they decorated with such tasteful and comfortable furniture. Since opening the new space, they're still working out a few kinks, but that didn't change this visit still being absolutely spectacular and amazing. To note as of 8/22/25 - the website states the lunch and dinner menu is served after 11:30am, but when we came (4:30/5pm on a Friday), they were only serving the happy hour food menu. I'm not sure if this was a one time thing or will be this way long term. Regardless, the HH menu prices are fantastic. The street style tacos are not too small and you get two for $5. My only complaint is they were all a little dry and could have used crema or another condiment in addition to the green sauce. The smoked wings - AMAZING. Sooo tender, meat fell off the bone, amazing flavor, and pairs perfectly with the house made ranch. The nachitos bowl was the perfect size - not too big or small. The Smoky Mug is as must visit when in Brookland Park. The people are great, the food is good, and the vibe is amazing. This coffee BBQ hybrid is a fun concept. Upon entering, you walk into the cafe side, if you go further down, you'll enter the BBQ side. There is seating in the cafe side and then outdoor seating available under a big tarp. There are a lot of options for seating. As for parking, there is free parking nearby and as well as bike parking or bus options. Whenever I'm taking pottery classes at Hand/Thrown I like to visit the Smoky Mug for a little treat. They have a selection of teas, fun coffees, and a chai lattes. I hope they offer Matcha Lattes one day. Their food portions are super generous here. And the meats are quite yummy. Do know they're greasey, but that's the point!! I was very confused why on yelp it states its closed Mon and Tues but i actually ordered food from the location so it was opened. They need to fix that on the website. The Smoky Mug is one of my favorite neighborhood spots to frequent, especially in the morning when I need a jolt of caffeine on my way to work. There is nothing like a good latte. I don't know how the baristas are so pleasant at 7am! lol My favorite thing to order here is the smoked chicken salad. It is soooo good, and I haven't found any other places that make it. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito with beef via the DoorDash app. First, it was a nightmare trying to place the order. I've been trying for WEEKS. Either they offered an extremely limited menu (coffee and bagels) that day, or they weren't open to receiving orders at that time. I finally ended up placing an order to be delivered in two days. I did exclude the hatch green chiles from the burrito because I don't like chiles. That's the only change I made. The burrito was large and the ingredients were plentiful. But it was almost completely tasteless. The potatoes looked seasoned, but didn't taste seasoned. The beef was very tender and smoked, but also unseasoned. There was a peppery paste or something in there, but it had no taste other than pepper. I did not see or taste any salsa roja at all. All I tasted was pepper and smoke. Technically, this burrito would have no problems filling you up. But I can't see how it keeps getting rave reviews for flavor and crispy potatoes when it has no flavor and the potatoes are soft and mushy. This was definitely not the experience the reviews led me to expect, and my disappointment is significantly amplified by how hard it was to even order the thing to begin with. I loved the old Smoky Mug and I like the new place as well. The new space is really awesome. They added smoked chicken wings to their menu and they are pretty great. I will say that the draft beer glasses were smaller than what I expected for the price. I expect beers to come in 16 ounce pint glasses and these were somewhat smaller. I will also say that the ordering process was a little awkward. You order your food on one side and pay then order your drinks on the other side and pay.
