    Brisket with Mac 'n Cheese
    Jasmine A.

Alright y'all. In summary in case you just want me to get straight to the point, oak and apple is absolutely fantastic. From the ambiance to the food, 100% spot on. I arrived around 12pm on a Monday. I was immediately greeted by the bartender who sat me at the bar outside (my request). I asked for a surprise me drink and they asked a few questions and when I received the drink, It was absolutely spot on to what I normally enjoy. For food I ordered the brisket with a side of Mac n cheese and Oh My Goodness this hit so hard. The brisket was easy to cut into, so much flavor without the sauce, but I'm a sauce girly so I got their "smokin hot" and "apple bbq" and wow, the smokin hot sauce had a lot of flavor and a nice spice to It! The Mac n cheese was cheesy with a soft texture where most places are normally rough at least in my experience! Now on to the service. Carey and Berit are by far the best bartenders in Richmond. They are so caring, respectful, patient, and will keep you company if you're sitting alone . They went above and beyond and exceeded my expectations. They are a total vibe.

It looks kinda like a bar, may even look like a dark weird spot depending on from which side you came in. But don't judge too fast, the place is awesome and brisket is divine! They have a patio with full service and indoor seating with great AC for a hot day. 1. Service is amazing, swift, knowledgeable and professional! 2. Food: great! - wasn't a fan of the apple slaw, but it was okay. - Baked potato is just okay, order with all the bells & whistles. - brisket is amazing! 3. Drinks are good, cider options are great compared to other joints. I personally highly recommend this place.

    Butter Burger

I've ordered the butter burger on door dash several times but this was my first time dining in! It's a very casual establishment, a few tables, and some bar space. I had the potato skins as an appetizer, which were very yummy and with only 6 pieces it definitely left me wanting more. The burger was good per usual. Biggest issue was there were multiple flies in the restaurant.

I don't know if I'm officially a brisket connoisseur or just somebody who knows good food when I taste it, but I need somebody to confirm this for me. Does Oak & Apple have the best brisket around or is it just me? I lived in Richmond for years, but I've been gone for over a decade now. Every time I come back, I'm reminded that Richmond's food scene is the best on the East Coast that I know of. Oak & Apple is one of those spots that makes the case. This trip, I brought my son with me after we wrapped up a college visit. Education was the first stop, but brisket was the priority. We sat down and got a new waiter. Nice guy, definitely tried his best, but the service was a little spotty. They didn't check on us much, but honestly, I didn't care. I wasn't there for the customer service. I was there for that brisket. Turns out it was happy hour. Our waiter didn't mention it, but luckily the folks sitting next to us did. So we ordered the chicken sliders that come with slaw and fries. One word, flavorful. You could taste the smoke in the chicken, and the sauces stole the show. The apple BBQ and hoisin BBQ sauces are top tier. I would buy them by the jar if they sold them. But the real reason I was there was the brisket. As soon as it hit the table, I went straight for the burnt ends. So much flavor, so much smoke. You don't even need sauce. That brisket speaks for itself. For my personal cheat code, I usually cut the brisket in half, throw it on their brioche bun, and hit it with a little sauce. It never misses. But even without the sauce or bun, it's perfect. I will come back to Richmond just for this brisket. It is that good. If somebody knows a place that serves a better brisket, feel free to put me on. But I'm telling you now, I don't think it exists.

    Pile High Sandwich, Pork Cracklins

Didn't know what to expect with this place, as we truthfully ended up here by accident after our initial dinner plans fell through. But by the end of the night, we were happy we gave it a shot. Fantastic service first and foremost - our server went above and beyond, literally tracking down every single sauce for us and allowing us to taste test them all since we were so indecisive. Also just super friendly with some solid menu recommendations! Top two sauces by the way? Big Daddy's Vinegar and Apple BBQ. The Pile High Sandwich? To die for. Dense with flavor and texture of different meats and good with literally any of the sauces. The sausage sandwich was alright - not my favorite, but a nice change of pace from your usual brisket, pulled pork variations at a BBQ ppitstop. Diverse beer selection and a quirky vibe that kept us smiling and laughing throughout.

Southern Poutine with a splash of gravy
    Brittany B.

I was craving poutine and after searching this in Uber Eats, Oak and Apple popped up. I ordered their Southern Poutine which is advertised as steak fries topped with white pepper gravy, grilled onions, and fried cheese curds. It sounded amazing and I was super looking forward to it. Once the it arrived, I noticed that it was really lacking the white pepper gravy. This was the driest poutine I've ever had - I basically paid $13 for a plate of food that I had to add ketchup to in order to make up for the missing gravy.

Decided to pop in here and I don't regret it at all. Everything was phenomenal and the service was great. The environment was clean and the music was a vibe. The food was extremely flavorful and probably the best Mac N Cheese Ive ever had. Will definitely be returning!

2 proteins, 2 sides and an order of corn bread

Went there with our new puppy. Good bbq and outdoor dining. Ribs & brisket perfectly cooked and the cornbread was outstanding. Slaw portion a bit small. Would reco if you are in the Richmond area.

It was a weekday after work. I went to my homegirl's house because I missed her birthday I offered to take her out someplace nice. She said no way man and immediately said we were going to this sandwich shop. This was the only thing she wanted. So we were gonna veg out on her couch. Have a couple cocktails and whatever else and watch something on TV. And her new couch is the bees knees. For me, the sandwich was perfect. The bread was beautiful and crusty. I was afraid it was going to be toasted and too crusty, and I'd be fighting to bite it and my sandwich guts spilling out while cutting up my gums and the roof of my mouth like it's Captain crunch or something.. BUT NO! It was PERFECT to bite through. They load you up with the meat they're not stingy. And the sauces... BABY! The aïoli was fantastic. My only beef is that horseradish aioli needed a little bit more of a kick, but that's a personal problem. My friend got the chicken Caesar and I see why it's popular. It is so garlicky and delicious. I already have plans on what I'm gonna get next time I go and I don't live close so it's gonna take a special trip and I intend to make it.

Cons: While I understand the sandwich requires a strong vessel to hold the toppings, the bread was very thick and tough. The fillings did not match the bread proportion on this particular sandwich. The chicken breast was extremely overcooked and difficult to chew. Several pieces were leather-like in texture. Maybe chicken thighs would work better. I love the creativity of this sandwich and I get where they were trying to go, but the finished product was disappointing. A new line cook was being trained so perhaps this accounted for the miss. I've seen photos of the other sandwiches and they look delicious with better proportioned fillings. Not sure if I'll give it another try, but shoutout to all their fans in Church Hill.

Not much flavor. Kids chicken strips were a chicken patty that was overcooked and cut up. Also came out lukewarm at best. The Rueben was soggy and had about three slices of meat on it. Very little sauce on the sandwich no and was charged for extra when I asked for more. Added the Parmesan truffle fries which were powered Parmesan with some truffle oil sprinkled on top. Again all lukewarm. The Timberwolf burger had maybe two jalapeño's on it and the onions were burnt. The regular burgers and kids are the same size. Housemade pickles were soggy and the cucumber skins were tough. The quality of food from when we had eaten here a couple years ago was subpar in comparison. If you are going to charge for upscale items then they need to be upscale in the quality of what you are serving. Will not be back.

Earlier in the month, I was finally able to check them out for the first time. I had my eye on their Italian hoagie, which is listed under the Cold section, but I know better at this point in time of living in the South and the many Italian hoagies that I have had to refrigerate. So I ordered it without the tomato or peppers and served cold. I ordered it through the bartender, who told me that they do serve them cold and that they were out of peppers that day. Turns out they were not out of peppers and they did not serve it cold. I can't eat peppers due to food sensitivities, so I sent it back and asked for it to be re-made. This was the bartender's mistake, from the receipt I could see that he didn't send those notes to Fat Kid, to be clear. The second rendition was made correctly, and it was definitely tasty, but they are overpriced. It's pretty obvious from my picture that this wasn't some hefty, super stuffed and loaded with meats/cheese hoagie. It looks like a normal 6" hoagie. Not worth $11 for it, in my opinion. I'd rather spend $16 at Stanley's or $10 for a full-size at Mr. Submarine.
