Southern Kitchen is one of those places I go to primarily for the espresso martinis. I actually go pretty often, but I'm not a big eater (and extremely picky), so it's rare that I order a full meal. I recently decided to try the meatloaf, and while it was still good, it was a little dry for my taste. I would order again despite that. The cabbage wasn't really for me either because it had a sweetness to it that I didn't love. The yams, however, were good. The catfish bites were also really good--crispy, hot, and flavorful. The Mac and cheese was *chefs kiss* delicious. Mashed potatoes were decent. I also tried the Soul Food Roll, and I really enjoyed it. The outside was perfectly crispy, and the duck sauce was really good. My only thought? Add some mac and cheese to that thing and you'd really have something. My biggest hesitation with eating here regularly is the portions. The plates are BIG, and when you look at the ingredients all piled together, it gives "that's easily 3,000 calories" energy. I'm not saying it actually is, but that's definitely how it looks. As someone who likes a small waist, I don't feel like I need all that every time I go. Now, the ambiance? EVERYTHING!!!!!!! Southern Kitchen is absolutely beautiful inside. It's one of those restaurants where you could easily dress up and have a really nice date night, celebrate something, or bring a group. What an experience!! I absolutely love this restaurant. Saturday was my very first time visiting and I will be back. The food was outstanding. Everything we ordered was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. I ordered the turkey wings with collard greens and candied yams. The turkey wings were so tender and flavorful along with the collard greens. We also ordered fried pickles. They were very light, large, and well seasoned. They did not require any additional sauce really. My friends ordered meatloaf and Cajun pasta. Those items were delicious as well. The service was freaking impeccable. Our waiter was soooo polite, friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable on the menu. He allowed us to take our time ordering and made great suggestions. The hostess was very friendly and accommodating as well. The ambiance was amazing. The establishment was very clean, neat, and decorated very well. Everything we ordered was delicious. We had the buffalo shrimp, collard green crab dip, fried okra, two cheeseburger kids meals, and the creole pasta, and every dish was flavorful and satisfying. If you're looking to spend some time and not in a rush then this is the place for you. The food is a little pricey, but I guess it comes with an experience! We visited this restaurant for a graduation lunch following a ceremony at VCU, May 8, 2026, and while the ambiance and décor were absolutely stunning, unfortunately our experience went downhill from there. Let's start with the positives -- the place is beautiful and clearly a well-chosen venue for a special occasion. Now, the food and service left a lot to be desired. My cousin's hamburger arrived completely plain -- no condiments whatsoever. She had to ask for mayo, ketchup, and other basics. There was also no salt and pepper on the table, so she requested it from a staff member who did not seem pleased and brought it over turned away from us with his hand covering the tops of the shakers -- not exactly a warm or sanitary impression. My husband and I both ordered the catfish. When his tartar sauce arrived (something he had to specifically request), he -- a former Navy cook -- was skeptical enough to ask if it was actually tartar sauce. That says a lot. My mac and cheese side was completely bland and flavorless. My husband also mentioned his lemonade tasted like straight syrup and had to dilute it with water. We also noticed in other reviews that cornbread is brought to the table -- we were never offered any. Sadly, about 12 hours later, both my husband and I are experiencing serious stomach issues. The food was good, but our overall experience was very disappointing. This was our second visit to Southern Kitchen, and unfortunately, we experienced the same issue we had during our previous visit in March. About 15 minutes after ordering, our server returned to tell one guest in our party that the stuffed flounder was unavailable and they needed to choose something else. A few minutes later, she came back again to tell another guest that the turkey wings were also unavailable. We should have been advised of unavailable menu items before placing our order. Our food was then delivered at different times, leaving the first person served waiting about 10 minutes while their food got cold before the rest of our party received their meals. When the check arrived, it included the turkey wings that the restaurant had already told us were unavailable, so we had to wait again for the check to be corrected. I asked to speak with the manager because, given the number of issues and a check over $300, I expected some level of accountability or consideration. The manager did not come to the table and instead sent the server back to say that we were paying for what we received and that no adjustment would be made. While the food was enjoyable, the service experience and management response were unacceptable for this price point. I was very disappointed and would not return. read more

We ordered our apps + drinks and each came out less than 15 minutes. The soul egg rolls were ok; the honey dipping sauce helped. The shrimp appetizer was delicious- perfectly fried shrimp with a sweet chili sauce for dipping. We had two orders of the fried chicken entrée and one turkey wing entrée. There was nothing on our plates that was not good! My friend "cut" the yams with greens but I ate my straight no chaser...I loved how sweet and perfect they were. However, the Caesar salad was overpriced and simply a bed of romaine with stale croutons and little dressing. The mashed potatoes were clearly powdered mix and the brown gravy was not good at all. This place is much bigger than I anticipated. The lighting is very cute and chic. We were seated right away then just sat there for quite some time while several staff members walked by. Eventually someone walked up to give us some water. We were ready to order but had to go to the bar area to order anything for happy hour. Bartender was very nice and helping train some of the other staff members. We ordered the sliders, pepperoni flatbread and sweet chili wings. Everything came out nice and hot which I appreciated. The sliders didn't really have much flavor or have a sauce. The flatbread was very bland. I didn't try the wings but hubby rated the wings a 7. I was able to try the apple cobbler and it was okay. I would definitely have been disappointed if I had paid $15 dollars for it. Overall the happy hour offerings sound good but do not deliver on flavor. I went to a Christmas dinner here with my non profit and were excited for the opportunity to try the new location out. We were seated right away on a Wednesday night at 630. Our server was great, she made sure I was comfortable while waiting for the whole party to arrive and explained what was on the menu. I started with a sweet tea, and we ordered cornbread as an appetizer. It was the perfect little starter before our meal came. For my entree, I chose blackened catfish, collard greens and Mac n cheese. Everything was really delicious. Collards were perfect, Mac was a smidge salty at the bottom, but overall it was great, and blackened fish was perfectly cooked. I do recommend this place, but have to warn that they are pricey. Third time was not the charm today. Made reservations for 5pm Sunday to celebrate my fiancés birthday. We arrive and are promptly seated. Restaurant was packed but servers were moving. The only issue is they were moving to every table but ours. We sat for 15 minutes without one single person acknowledging our presence - no hi, I'll be right with you, no water, nothing. We got up to leave and the hostess wishes us a good evening to which we reply, no one ever came over to help us. She promptly cancelled our reservation as we were waking to the car (thanks open table for notifying me) but didn't apologize for the lack of customer service today. I understand they were busy (there was a lot of commotion back in the kitchen - one raised voice in particular) but it doesn't excuse their actions tonight. I didn't realize Southern Kitchen was at Stonypoint Fashion Mall in the spot where Brio's used to be, I treated my (Pescatarian) daughter for her 30th birthday. My daughter had the blackened salmon in which she thoroughly enjoyed it was cooked to perfection, she had white rice and yams as her sides. My daughter also had the drink Kitchen Sink which she had no problem gulping down. I had the fall off the bone turkey wings with gravy and onions, so DELICIOUS!!! We were in Richmond for the night and decided to look for a black/brown establishment to eat dinner. The valet at the Omni, Kanisha, suggested Southern Kitchen. We made reservations as suggested on the website. I loved the location in the historic Jackson Ward!! We came in to a great jazzy playlist that set the vibe. We were seated and our server was very attentive. This was our first time so he was patient and made some great recommendations. The buttered cornbread muffins were delicious. We ordered the "egg rolls" but they did not come before our food was served. When we inquired, he thought we were just ordering. It was clear he did not hear us over the music. Let me pause to say the playlist was great, just a little loud for a place that the servers need to hear to take orders. We had to raise our voice a little louder than usual to have a conversation. We decided not to talk and just enjoy the food. We ordered the moscato, sweet tea, and the strawberry lemonade. See the pics. Yes, that was a fresh cut strawberry in the glass! YUMMI The food: The blacked catfish was on point and seasoned well. The fried cabbage was good until you got to the bottom where it was a little too salty. The yams..... WERE PERFECT!! If you are going to candy yams, it should be ooey gooey!! This was EXACTLY as they should be. (I need you to show another restaurant what that means!) The fresh cut fries were spot on and hot! (Hot like heat not spice) The collards would be perfect but someone decided to cook the leaves whole. They were seasoned right otherwise. The Mac n cheese was good. The fried whiting and shrimp were great!! The scald on them were simply southern and perfect!! They had zero desserts the day we went per the server. Great place to eat, parking is ample (street or lot). Not far off of I95 for those traveling through the area. Keep up the great work!! read more
