Southern Kitchen is one of those places I go to primarily for the espresso martinis. I actually go pretty often, but I'm not a big eater (and extremely picky), so it's rare that I order a full meal. I recently decided to try the meatloaf, and while it was still good, it was a little dry for my taste. I would order again despite that. The cabbage wasn't really for me either because it had a sweetness to it that I didn't love. The yams, however, were good. The catfish bites were also really good--crispy, hot, and flavorful. The Mac and cheese was *chefs kiss* delicious. Mashed potatoes were decent. I also tried the Soul Food Roll, and I really enjoyed it. The outside was perfectly crispy, and the duck sauce was really good. My only thought? Add some mac and cheese to that thing and you'd really have something. My biggest hesitation with eating here regularly is the portions. The plates are BIG, and when you look at the ingredients all piled together, it gives "that's easily 3,000 calories" energy. I'm not saying it actually is, but that's definitely how it looks. As someone who likes a small waist, I don't feel like I need all that every time I go. Now, the ambiance? EVERYTHING!!!!!!! Southern Kitchen is absolutely beautiful inside. It's one of those restaurants where you could easily dress up and have a really nice date night, celebrate something, or bring a group. What an experience!! I absolutely love this restaurant. Saturday was my very first time visiting and I will be back. The food was outstanding. Everything we ordered was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. I ordered the turkey wings with collard greens and candied yams. The turkey wings were so tender and flavorful along with the collard greens. We also ordered fried pickles. They were very light, large, and well seasoned. They did not require any additional sauce really. My friends ordered meatloaf and Cajun pasta. Those items were delicious as well. The service was freaking impeccable. Our waiter was soooo polite, friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable on the menu. He allowed us to take our time ordering and made great suggestions. Southern Kitchen is such a beautiful restaurant. The ambiance and decor are absolutely stunning, but what really stood out was the food and service -- both were top tier. Everything we ordered was delicious. We had the buffalo shrimp, collard green crab dip, fried okra, two cheeseburger kids meals, and the creole pasta, and every dish was flavorful and satisfying. The only challenge was trying to enjoy such a beautiful meal while managing our two hungry babies, but even that couldn't take away from the experience. Very disappointed with the customer service & bill! I was having lunch with 5 other ladies @ 2 pm & the restaurant was not busy. I ordered an appetizer, but it did not arrive until the same time our entrees were served. (25 or 30 mins after order placed) I had requested a small side salad instead of the french fries that came with the sandwich & Vanessa H., our waitress, did not mention any up-charge. My plate was served with the french fries, despite instructions. Two other orders at our table were also inaccurate. Drink refills were difficult to obtain & we did not see our server for lengthy periods. When I requested my check because of a subsequent appointment, it took more than 15 minutes to obtain. Imagine my surprise when I was charged an extra $14 for my small side salad! When I mentioned this to Vanessa, she told me that there could not be any adjustment to my lunch bill of $98.79 for 1 Salmon sandwich, 1 BBQ sandwich, 1 iced tea, 1 dip with crostini and 1 small salad! Very disappointing experience. After spending over $200 on our meal, we asked for a few small to-go containers and a knife so we could cut a birthday cake we brought in. We were told there would be a $25 cake-cutting fee just to use the restaurant's items. I understand restaurants have policies, but after spending more than $200, charging an additional $25 simply to cut a birthday cake felt excessive and unnecessary. It completely changed the mood of what was supposed to be a special birthday celebration. Sometimes it's the small things that determine whether customers return. We visited this restaurant for a graduation lunch following a ceremony at VCU, May 8, 2026, and while the ambiance and décor were absolutely stunning, unfortunately our experience went downhill from there. Let's start with the positives -- the place is beautiful and clearly a well-chosen venue for a special occasion. Now, the food and service left a lot to be desired. My cousin's hamburger arrived completely plain -- no condiments whatsoever. She had to ask for mayo, ketchup, and other basics. There was also no salt and pepper on the table, so she requested it from a staff member who did not seem pleased and brought it over turned away from us with his hand covering the tops of the shakers -- not exactly a warm or sanitary impression. My husband and I both ordered the catfish. When his tartar sauce arrived (something he had to specifically request), he -- a former Navy cook -- was skeptical enough to ask if it was actually tartar sauce. That says a lot. My mac and cheese side was completely bland and flavorless. My husband also mentioned his lemonade tasted like straight syrup and had to dilute it with water. We also noticed in other reviews that cornbread is brought to the table -- we were never offered any. Sadly, about 12 hours later, both my husband and I are experiencing serious stomach issues. We went to Southern Kitchen for my daughter's birthday. I asked the waitress to place the cake in the freezer. She said it was a $25 fee. When I asked why, she rudely went and got a manager. Then, when it was time to sing happy birthday, they brought out a melted cake, and the box it was in was not cold. I mentioned this to the manager. He assured me that he put the cake in the freezer, but it was visibly melted, and the box was not cold. He began fussing and spitting instead of graciously apologizing for my daughter's cake coming out melted. He was fussing, saying the $25 fee was for the plates and the napkins, and that they are not responsible for what happened to the cake. What a memory. I spent $200 at what was our favorite restaurant, and he came out spitting and fussing, with no consideration at all. The food is great, but the experience was awful. The male manager and the waitress, both employees, would definitely benefit from customer service training and having a bit of class. We have gone there for years to celebrate my girls' birthdays. The food was good, but our overall experience was very disappointing. This was our second visit to Southern Kitchen, and unfortunately, we experienced the same issue we had during our previous visit in March. About 15 minutes after ordering, our server returned to tell one guest in our party that the stuffed flounder was unavailable and they needed to choose something else. A few minutes later, she came back again to tell another guest that the turkey wings were also unavailable. We should have been advised of unavailable menu items before placing our order. Our food was then delivered at different times, leaving the first person served waiting about 10 minutes while their food got cold before the rest of our party received their meals. When the check arrived, it included the turkey wings that the restaurant had already told us were unavailable, so we had to wait again for the check to be corrected. I asked to speak with the manager because, given the number of issues and a check over $300, I expected some level of accountability or consideration. The manager did not come to the table and instead sent the server back to say that we were paying for what we received and that no adjustment would be made. While the food was enjoyable, the service experience and management response were unacceptable for this price point. I was very disappointed and would not return. read more

Now as to the food, I'll be honest, I usually go for the fried catfish, but since I can't sneak off in here alone, between my wife, daughter and I; we have likely enjoyed about 75% of the menu. I love the instrumental Playlist, mostly filled with 90s R&B. The vibe is so good! It took about 10 minutes before our waitress came over but after that....her service was on point. We ordered our apps + drinks and each came out less than 15 minutes. The soul egg rolls were ok; the honey dipping sauce helped. The shrimp appetizer was delicious- perfectly fried shrimp with a sweet chili sauce for dipping. We had two orders of the fried chicken entrée and one turkey wing entrée. There was nothing on our plates that was not good! My friend "cut" the yams with greens but I ate my straight no chaser...I loved how sweet and perfect they were. The greens on my plate as a side were better than the ones in the Southern roll - same for the chicken. The Kitchen Sink and Shane's lemonade were great 21+ drinks for our meals. The sliders didn't really have much flavor or have a sauce. The flatbread was very bland. I didn't try the wings but hubby rated the wings a 7. I was able to try the apple cobbler and it was okay. Chicken was perfectly fried, shrimp perfect fried, the salmon cake was just the way I remember it growing up! Most importantly the collard greens, Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes was on point!!
