Over many years I have have visited this establishment while making many trips up and down 95. It wouldn't be a road trip if we didn't get a little sumthin from here. I made it through the ribs which were subpar but okay, but the chicken was barely edible and the brisket I couldn't get passed two bites of; I have had jerky less dry. Let me first start by saying our server was very polite and provided great service. This is not a reflection of her. Second, this food was horrible. 2 of us had food poisoning and it was terrible as we were eating it. I got the combo, my husband had ribs, 2 others had pork bbq sandwiches and another had a chicken salad. The chicken salad chicken was dry. The pork bbq was also dry but it's a Carolina style in case you're curious. The ribs were just god awful. Tough and chewy with terrible flavor. I also had a quarter chicken which was dry and inedible. The chopped beef tasted like a steak Um sandwich which is fine if I wanted a steak um, I did not. Sides, the only redeeming was the hushpuppies. The mac n cheese was not good. Noodles were unevenly cooked. Some were hard, some were fine and some were too done. Baked beans were not good, Cole slaw was bland. Fries were not fresh or the baked them. We lease don't waste your money here. I stopped by on a late Sunday afternoon, while on my way back up to DC after a trip. I wanted to get something more local, hoping that I could find some good bbq for lunch. Unfortunately, I didn't find it here. I got a large bbq minced sandwich. The size was good, but the sandwich was really salty and the bbq was also salty.. and peppery. I couldn't finish my sandwich. HOWEVER, the hush puppies were soooooo good. They're a little large - like the size and a half of a golf ball. Made fresh and served with butter, I could have eaten a dozen. The service was nice. I was frankly insulted by our order from PG. We ordered a hamburger, which was supposed to automatically come with lettuce, tomato, mayo and pickle. What we got was a wad of meat with the consistency of a stale sponge. No condiments. No toppings. Nothing. Just a sad puck of meatloaf stuck between bland bread, wrapped in a paper towel. The chopped steak platter came with none of the promised gravy and onions, even though the sides were serviceable. Barely. The kids chicken tenders were unseasoned. The fries soggy. The saving grace was the steak sub, which by my son's account was the best steak and cheese he's ever had. The staff was nice enough. The restaurant clean. Maybe their other items are good, but the meals we got tonight singlehandedly ruined the evening. I don't think we'll be eating there again. read more

My daughter and I were driving up 95 at lunchtime and saw the food sign at the exit. We got off and followed signs to pg bbq. We got the last table before it got packed. They were really hustling in there to get orders taken and out. Super nice people. Cozy atmosphere. I got ribs that I had to eat with a fork because the meat fell off the bone. It was so tender and delicious. I had greens and okra sides with cornbread. My daughter had pulled chicken with greens and applesauce and hush puppies. We loved everything and only ate 2/3rds of the food because of the large portions. I will make a point of working my drives past there during meal hours! read more

My wife and I moved south of the river from Short Pump a few years ago and have been trying local restaurants as we are big time foodies. BBQ is one of our favorites, and until we found this place, we struggled to find any really good BBQ in RVA. (We will take a day trip to Gordonsville some weekends just to get BBQ Exchange, which has been our go-to favorite after a morning hike in the mountains!) This place is the bomb. The minced pork is perfectly salty, smoky and juicy. Their ribs fall off the bone and have all the caramelized ends you could ever want. The beef brisket is tender, juicy and has that tasty edge you want out of a good smoked brisket. Their collard greens are spot on. The cole slaw here is the best I've ever had - not too much mayo, fresh cabbage with just the right bite, and a generous portion of celery seeds that make the taste buds pop! Finally, their sauce is perfectly balanced. Kind of like Arby's red sauce but with a little more black pepper and real ingredients instead of HFCS. We love this place so much we had them cater our daughters rehearsal dinner in our back yard. Couldn't say enough good things about this hidden BBQ gem in south side RVA. OMG this is amazing BBQ!!!! For 15$ I got the 1/2 chicken platter, it was fantastic it included 1/2 a bbq chicken that was falling off the bone, cornbread, and 2 sides. I choose cole slaw and Mac n cheese. The provided silverware and abundant condiments including extra sauce, and enough napkins which were needed. The cornbread was light and soft . Melted in my mouth with the delicious whipped butter that it came with. I'm not a huge fan of Mac and cheese but having been in SC for the past 2 weeks I gave it a try. It was creamy and rich. Tasted homemade but personally I prefer a baked m n c. I found the coleslaw far better than expected. The cabbage wash very fresh and crispy. The dressing had a hint of mayo and a refreshing tang of vinegar. Definitely NOT from an industrial strength 5 gallon bucket! By far the highlight was the chicken. A very large 1/2 chicken cooked to perfection, tender, and juicy. Literally falling off the bone !! Have enough leftover for lunch tomorrow. I love Saturday lunch dates with my man! He always has a surprise up his sleeve. Pg BBQ was the latest victim. You know it's the place to be when you can see the smoke coming out of the old fashioned stove that's right out front! It's a small place, but from walking in, I knew it was popular. Almost all the tables were filled. I went with the BBQ pork sandwich combo, and my partner in crime went for the hot dog combo. Both came with fries and a drink. I had the sweet tea and the waitress was always on point, making sure I was always topped off! She made about 3 rounds with the pitcher of tea, and I love me some sweet tea! Again, this is one of those spots that let YOU decide how much BBQ sauce you want on your meal. And I love that. The sauce they had was the perfect mix of sweet and tangy, with a bit of a kick. I was able to slather as much as I wanted on my sandwich. The amount of meat overflowed, and I had my beloved coleslaw too. The fries were good and plentiful (I couldn't finish them all). We stopped at PG BBQ on a drive home to New York and tried just about everything on the menu. Nothing disappointed! Unfortunately I left my sweater in a booth and didn't realize until i was back home. After calling the restaurant to see if it was there, the kind women that worked there offered to send it back to me all the way in New York. I just received it in the mail today and my pleasant surprise, they threw in some delicious BBQ sauce and honey roasted peanuts! So happy I stumbled into this establishment. Heard decent things about this place and decided to try it for myself. Came and got takeout at about12- 1pm. I got a pulled pork sandwich and baked beans with a sweet tea. The BBQ was very finely chopped which I'm not a huge fan of, I guess that's just preference. But it was dry and had to be soaked in sauce to extract any flavor out of it. Even the sauce was too sweet and had an odd fruity berry flavor? The beans were good, had a nice smoky flavor. But then, low key the most important aspect of a BBQ spot, is the sweet tea. It was watery and was hardly sweet at all. I would give more of a pass if I came later in the day and things weren't as fresh but given that it was on the early part of lunch time, I definitely expected more, especially with the amount of BBQ options in the Petersburg/Chester/CH area read more

Nice people, very small. Burger was huge had to cut the meat in half and was little dry no seasoning. Pork sandwich was very dry, slaw had to much celery seed. Fries were not good, okra was cooked to long. Hush puppies were ok. Portions were big but food just tasted old and reheated. Asked for lemon and they gave me a bottle of concentrated lemon. Will not go to this location again. Maybe will try other location, but this on never again. Only giving 3 stars because of portion size and nice waitress, food gets two stars. read more

Went here today during an all you can eat rib night.. Place was busy, service fast. The server, who was also the cashier was courteous and friendly. The ribs were smoked to perfection, with the meat falling off them, so I was able to eat them completely with a fork and knife. The rib sauce complimented the ribs nicely. (only one sauce). The fried okra was good, not great. The collard greens had a touch of sweetness which I loved (sweet tooth). The best side was the hushpuppies. They were light, moist, extremely flavorful. It is a small building, not a ton of seating so I wouldn't dine in if you have a big group. The servers were friendly. It was lunch hour and I probably waiting 10 minutes for my food. The portions sizes were very generous for the price. I got the chicken strip combo with fries. Delicious. The chicken was moist and hot. I had a half chicken on this day with sides. Man they loaded me up with the sides and plenty of sauce for the chicken (for it was a little on the dry side). I was driving through Virginia and wanted to find a local spot to try something other than the fast food I was forced to eat on my road trip. The highway exit signs mention this BBQ joint just a short drive from the exit. After one left turn, a helpful sign saying ahead on right was appreciated but somehow I drove right past it. After turning around I spotted the tiny building, parked and walked in around 3:45. When I came in a girl was sitting at a customer table on her tablet and looked startled but was very nice and asked me if my order was for here or to go. I was the only one in the place and that kind of worried me. I always feel awkward when I am the only one in a restaurant other than staff. It took me a minute to figure out the hand written menu board and then I settled on a BBQ plate with two sides (collard greens and mac-n-cheese) and hushpuppies. Only two or three minutes later my food came out. I should have looked close at the menu because I didn't like what I got. The sliced BBQ was 10.99 i think and the minced BBQ plate was $8.99. I thought that I was getting a *chopped* BBQ plate. Let me tell you when they say 'minced' they mean it. I have never seen BBQ this ground up. It looked like little tiny granules of pork dirt. I think the chef must have been using all his free time Slap-chopping the meat to a fine mist of meat sand. The result was a dry and odd texture of BBQ that really had no flavor. There was a red BBQ sauce (not their own) available to put on the meat and it needed it bad but still didn't help. Now I live in NC and love BBQ and take it either sliced or pulled or even chopped but this minced meat was bad. The collard greens were way too salty and greasy. The mac and cheese was the powder cheese type and over cooked. All the items I got were microwaved and not served from a fresh batch made that day I could tell. Sadly, the hush puppies could have been great but they were microwaved too. The batter seemed good and had some nice onion and jalepeno or peppers of some sort in it, but instead of getting two fresh hushpuppies out the fryer they were nuked and sent out to me - I guess to help with lost food costs. Sad. The girl who served me was very nice and the food came out quick. Too bad it tasted so bad. I felt like crap the rest of my drive to Greensboro. I would avoid this place as a drive thru traveler. read more

Disappointed! My wife and i were driving north on I-95 and were getting low on gas. We pulled off a random exit near Petersburg, VA and refueled. We decided to find a local place to eat since we had already stopped. We yelped and googled food, restaurants and eateries and came up with this place. We read the reviews and they were only just ok... so we were skeptical about eating here. Should have followed my gut instincts because the parking lot was empty (sign #1). After we pulled up, two other couples and a truck driver pulled up. I felt a little better. I ordered the sliced brisket and a few minutes later... I was told they didn't have any more (sign #2). The waitress acted that she didn't like having to work on Labor day (sign#3) but she might have been going through something personally that day. $40 dollars later... I ordered the BBQ chicken, jalapeño poppers, hot wings. My wife ordered a house salad. Salad was wilted and old. It was sent back and the exact same thing came back a second time. (Note to self... don't order salad from a BBQ place). Poppers were ok... fried, greasy, hot and totally what we expected. Hot wings were fried yesterday, then re-fried today but burnt. But that BBQ chicken platter though... tasted like it was cooked yesterday and microwaved. If it were Saturday at 11am. The food could have been great... but Saturday food served on Monday just doesn't work. Any ratings above 3 stars must be related to the owners. We met 5 other total strangers who were also there for the first time and they got the same vibe... bland, blah and a waste of time, money and effort. I dont usually rate this low.... Service was wonderful. Really friendly people behind the counter and waitress. There is a big expensive looking smoker in front of building but it was not fired up. I appreciate the taste and tenderness of smoked beef and pork. We ordered a BBQ sampler which included chicken, ribs, BBQ, and beef brisket. The brisket was disappointing. Got minced pork BBQ platters. Meat was dry but that could be because it was near closing time. Excellent sides. I'd try again but get different main dish or just get sides. Delicious collard greens. Flavored right. Very good potato salad (potatoes fully cooked which is huge) and quite possibly the best hush puppies ever. Mac and cheese was ok and slaw had good flavor but was big. Tried two desserts. Banana pudding was ok. I think it was made with banana pudding instead of vanilla which made it somewhat strong. Carrot cake was excellent.
