Please know this place was very close to getting a 4star review. I'll give it 3.5 stars! From a local in RVA I heard that the food from cookout taste like food from a real "cook out" ! Given the fact that there are not many or any of these spots in the DMV area. I had to try out the food from "Cook out" . I choose to hit the drive thru and the service was great except the fact I repeated my order twice and the guy repeated it back and when I got home I didn't get what I ordered. The drive thru line was short and fast. The prices are super reasonable and the food was okay. It missed the mark for flavor for me. I ordered the Cajun chicken sandwich and there was nothing flavorful or Cajun about it. The food did not taste like "cook out " food at all. However, The milkshake was wonderful. The seasoned fries was delicious. I have mixed feelings about this one. But I definitely will visit again one day and maybe get the burger this time and hopefully get my correct order too ... Drive thru order. I asked for a peanut butter shake with peanut butter cups, and was told that they can't do that because they don't have peanut butter ice cream. Great value! We're from Arizona, and we needed a fast food place by the airport. We saw this place on Yelp and noticed the amazingly low prices. Great find! It's mind blowing how much food you get for such a low price. You get your main entree, two sides (and not just fries, but even quesadillas!), and a drink! Now, one thing to note is that you get up charged not only for things like bacon and cheese, but even for tomatoes. Still, even with a few upgrades, my family of five ate for under $50. In this day and age, that's incredible. And the staff was very helpful. When we mentioned it was our first time, the lady behind the counter even walked out and around so she could walk us through the menu on the menu board on the wall and how the meals worked. Back in July, I was staying in a hotel in the Commerce Road area off I-95. I was exhausted from sitting out in the heat for three hours for a beer release, so my plan was to order delivery. That is, until I arrived at the hotel and realized that not a single place that I could find would actually deliver to that section of Richmond. Oops. Cook Out to the rescue! Cook Out is a chain I hold in high regard in my mind. It's partially a dose of nostalgia when I think of college, but it's also just a great fast food chain! I love their milkshakes, especially the Oreo one (which I purchased here), and their bacon cheese hot dogs are incredible in comparison with other fast food establishment's dogs. I would pass on their chicken wraps though -- there's just not much to them. It didn't take long to receive my order, and the cashier was sweet. The parking lot was easy to navigate, and I didn't have issues getting back on the road. Plus the benefit of a milkshake menu that can not be beat. My friend suggested this place, telling me that I would be amazed at the possibilities on the menu. It really is overwhelming once you realize that everything is s potential side order. I'm not here to pretend that there are healthy choices. Just order what sounds good to you and you'll be ok. I ended up with a hamburger, corn dog, and onion rings with a milkshake for around $7. Left very full and happy that I didn't regret my decisions. The food was basic fried food, and the burger patty was small and cooked thin but was a nice compliment to the toppings (mustard, slaw, and chili.) my friend had a pork sandwich and my boy was pleased with his spicy chicken. My malted peanut butter shake was thick enough to demand a spoon and had a nice balance of the flavors. Best of all, all three orders came out in the time it took to fill a soda cup at the machine. Okay. This is not gourmet food. But for what it is, it is very good. Burgers and hotdog is wonderful. The BLT is on a burger bun. I'd prefer white toast but it is still good. The lettuce and tomato was very fresh. And there was a decent amount of well made bacon. The onion rings well well made and there was onion in each piece. Decent sized. Price is great. Hot dog is skinny but tasty. Overall it is a worthwhile meal. And looks well set up. I would recommend and do go there periodically. read more

We were in Richmond for vacation and looking for something quick for the kids. This was a great option for us and the kids to pop in. We ordered 3 hot dogs, fries, burger, and milkshake. I thought they charged us wrong since the bill was only $13 dollars, but everything was on the receipt correctly. The food came out hot and fresh and tasted fine. There was nothing to stand out about the food, but it was a good and the milkshake was thick and full of Oreos. I tried Cookout 7 times in 2014, each time trying something new, and eventually gave up. I wanted to find something worth repeating, but could not. So I stayed away from Cookout for 3+ years. Then, 4 days ago, on a whim, I decided to give them another chance. Most of the entrees are rather skimpy, so I thought I was safe ordering both a Cheddar style huge burger and a hot dog with Cheddar cheese. My mistake. The burger was too much for me. In addition to the burger & hot dog, I ordered hush puppies and French fries. Everything was okay. The only item I wanted more of was the hush puppies. Very good. The best thing I can say about Cookout is that the prices are amazingly low. The store was clean, personnel were very friendly, and parking was adequate in their private lot. The staff does not take the customers interest paramount..I have noticed staff playing in the kitchen during each visit and the food I received was terrible. The woman handing us the order at the window looked like she'd rather be doing literally ANYTHING but what she was doing. Stone-faced attitude for no reason at all. Then, we got the food. Wish I'd taken a photo of the burgers before we attempted to make the best of it. We all laughed when we opened the buns up to add ketchup - the burger patties were oval-shaped and couldn't have been thinner. They didn't even remotely come close to equaling the size of the buns they were in between. They seemed to have been microwaved waaaaay too long or something. It was comical. Stacked one on top of the other, they looked like they should've been on a hot dog bun. The hamburger bun was way too big for them stacked so we set each patty next to the other to at least fill out the bread. So it was basically like a single burger in the end. The large number of people in the kitchen work together to get your food cooked, bagged and too you in record time. I must applaud them for knowing how to organize each step. Rustic cabin meets fresh delish fast-food. This place is amazing for a quick bite. I have a habit of making long road trips from somewhere in the NorthEast (typically DC or NYC) down to Miami. This painfully long 19+ hour drive can get excruciatingly arduous. One of the few things that gets me through the trip is knowing that there is a Cook Out along the way to stop by at and chow down on some delicious fast-food on a budget! The milkshake menu is banging! I love that there are more than 10+ options for milkshakes including seasonal fruit blends. Usually you can even find chunks of real fruit in the creamy goodness. And let's not forget that biscuits and hash puppies are side items at Cook Out! What I found interesting was the bible verses on the packaging. The Staff is RUDE. I tried calling the number to put in a complaint but no one will answer. I ordered a tray with the quesadilla. She did not ask me what kind I wanted (which I didn't realize til after I had ordered). When we got up to the window, I asked the lady what kind of quesadilla did I get because I didn't tell her what I wanted. She said chicken. I told her I wanted the beef. She proceeded to roll her eyes and take a deep breath. She then snapped at me and said that anytime someone doesn't specify what they want, they give you a chicken, and next time you need to say what you want? This is my second time at Cookout but my first time inside. The food was delicious, fresh, and prepared quickly. The restaurant was clean and there were several tables that were wheelchair accessible (necessary for a family member who was with us). The only reason I gave a four star rating is because the music was so loud it made it difficult to carry on a conversation with others at my table. Compounding the problem, they were playing a contemporary Christian station, which isn't bad in and of itself, but when it is blasted, isn't music that's appealing to everyone. Love this local, cheap, tasty favorite. I had the spicy chicken sandwich tray. The chicken sandwich wasn't that spicy but with the added cheese it was very tasty. The tray allows two sides and a drink all for under $6! $1 extra if you choose one of over 20 flavored shakes. Open late and it has a drive thru. The food is very inexpensive and served out fast.
