Backwoodz BBQ Restaurant -- 400 W Williamsburg Rd, Sandston, VA 23150, right across from Richmond…read moreInternational Airport I had the pleasure of visiting Backwoodz BBQ Restaurant last weekend with my wife, her two brothers, my father-in-law, and my nephew, and I can honestly say this was one of the most enjoyable restaurant experiences we've had in a long time. Let me start with the most important part: THE FOOD! I ordered The Whiting Fish Plate with two sides and cornbread, and the fish, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread were amazing. My father-in-law also had the fish and couldn't believe how much food was on his plate. My wife's brothers got the brisket and absolutely loved the flavor of the barbecue. The portions are generous, the food is fresh, and you definitely won't leave wondering where your money went. And then there's the atmosphere. From the moment we walked through the door, the hostess was incredibly welcoming. It felt genuine, and that kind of hospitality is something you don't encounter nearly as often as you should. There was also a gentleman there who was basically a one-man show. He was extremely talented, both musically and vocally. He sang all of the classic songs, and we almost couldn't eat because we were too busy singing along with him! It really added something special to the experience. The restaurant was also extremely clean, comfortable, and had a welcoming, almost home-like feeling. Another thing that really stood out to me was the owner coming out to check on us and ask how everything was. After tasting that food, I didn't even need to say much. I think the look on my face said everything. That was the look of pure satisfaction! He actually sat down with our family, and we got the opportunity to ask him questions about his history with food, where he got his influences, and what gave him the desire to cook. He also let us know that since we were from North Carolina, if he was catering an event, he could make whatever style of barbecue his clients desired. That's some real culinary skill. Being able to adapt your barbecue to what your customers want says a lot about your experience and knowledge of the craft. But what impressed me even more was watching him take the time to talk with my nephew and mentor him on some business questions he had. That really stood out to me. It wasn't just about serving us food. He took an interest in our family and was willing to share some of his knowledge and experience. I was truly impressed with the entire interaction. Overall, Backwoodz BBQ Restaurant is a restaurant I would absolutely recommend. Great food, generous portions, welcoming service, a unique atmosphere, live music, and an owner who genuinely seems to care about his customers. We came in to try something new, and we left already talking about what we're going to try next time. If you're in Sandston or the Richmond, VA area, especially if you're coming through Richmond International Airport, I highly recommend giving Backwoodz BBQ Restaurant a try. You won't just be getting a meal. You'll get an experience.

Tastes like somebody smoked and cooked the meat, in the "backwoods" behind someone's house. Had the Brisket dinner, with cold slaw, baked beans, and half a slab of ribs (see pics). The "sides" needed more attention. Very basic. VERY. Brisket was ok. A lot of "smoked" flavor, which is to be expected. Ribs, tasty, great portion. I'd recommend.

They also have a little grocery section with a good selection of wine, beer, chocolates, and other basics. The flavor profiles were pretty on point, but the sandwich bread really stood out - they had just the right crunch-to-soft ratio The staff are also lovely - they helped me pick from the options and were very knowledgeable about the menu - good vibes all around and definitely worth stopping by if you want to enjoy a casual meal with great food and drinks. The food here was really good. My kiddo specifically asked for cheese fries for his birthday lunch,…read moreso after asking for recommendations on Facebook, this place seemed like the best choice. It can get a little pricy, especially when you want to try all of the things, but the portions were plentiful and tasted delicious. We started with the cheese stick roulette, where they apparently prep a bunch of different cheeses for cheese sticks earlier in the week, and then just randomly grab six to deep fry when you order it. You have no idea what it is, they have no idea what it is. Pretty fun and delicious and we love cheese, so total win. We ended up cutting them in half just to check what they were before eating because the kids do not like anything remotely spicy and pepper jack is one of the cheeses, so we just had to verify it wasn't that so they could eat it and hubs and I ate those ones instead. I thought the tomato coulis it was served with was stellar, and the fruity jam was also amazing. I could not decide which one was better for dipping the cheesesticks in, and I ended up keeping both condiments when the cheesesticks were gone so I could dip my fries in them. A fantastic choice, they were both great with the fries. Which I might add, are AWESOME! They are scoopable fries. So... like a cross between potato skins and potato wedges. They were both crispy and soft and very unique and so worth the trip. They also use the cheese dip instead of just shredded cheese, so it stays creamy and gooey. All of the burgers sounded awesome and it took us a very long time to decide what we wanted (I had been looking at the menu days in advance to make sure I could decide) and we opted for the Southern Gentleman (pimento cheese, hot honey and fried chicken) and the PBJ and I can't decide which one I liked more. They were both completely different and completely delicious. If I had to make a recommendation... I'd say bring a friend, order one of each and split them like hubs and I did. Choices are for suckers. Kiddos opted for the cheese fries that he came for (which come with bacon, btw) and the kiddos cheeseburger meal, and they both loved them. The service was great too, even when this place was pretty darn crowded on a weekday lunch hour. Also, don't be fooled by the storefront driving by, this restaurant is waaaaaaaay bigger on the inside than it appears on the outside. There was plenty of seating. The music was a touch too loud, but they also had some yummy sounding specialty drinks, as well as a bunch of local beers. My kids have been asking to come back pretty much since we left the restaurant.

I am absolutely furious about the way my autistic niece was treated at Jimmy John's…read more My niece was fired after an incident involving another person running the store. What is especially disturbing is what happened when the owner confronted her. Instead of trying to understand how an autistic employee communicates, she was berated and shamed because she does not communicate the way a "normal" person does. Let that sink in. She is autistic. She communicates differently. That is not something she should ever have to be humiliated for. Autistic people are not broken. They are not stupid. They are not incapable of working. And they should never be made to feel ashamed of who they are or how they communicate. A person in a position of authority should know that yelling at, belittling, or shaming an autistic employee is not an appropriate way to handle a workplace conflict. There should have been an effort to communicate with her in a way she could understand and to address the actual workplace issue--not attack the way she communicates. My niece deserves to be treated with dignity and respect just like every other employee. I am posting this because this kind of treatment should NOT be normalized or swept under the rug. If a business hires an autistic person, then that person deserves to be treated like a human being--not shamed for being autistic. I love my niece, I believe in her, and I will absolutely stand up for her when someone makes her feel like there is something wrong with her simply because she is different. There is nothing wrong with communicating differently. There is something very wrong with making someone feel ashamed for it.

It was a weekday after work. I went to my homegirl's house because I missed her birthday I offered to take her out someplace nice. She said no way man and immediately said we were going to this sandwich shop. This was the only thing she wanted. So we were gonna veg out on her couch. Have a couple cocktails and whatever else and watch something on TV. And her new couch is the bees knees. For me, the sandwich was perfect. The bread was beautiful and crusty. I was afraid it was going to be toasted and too crusty, and I'd be fighting to bite it and my sandwich guts spilling out while cutting up my gums and the roof of my mouth like it's Captain crunch or something.. BUT NO! It was PERFECT to bite through. They load you up with the meat they're not stingy. And the sauces... BABY! The aïoli was fantastic. My only beef is that horseradish aioli needed a little bit more of a kick, but that's a personal problem. My friend got the chicken Caesar and I see why it's popular. It is so garlicky and delicious. I already have plans on what I'm gonna get next time I go and I don't live close so it's gonna take a special trip and I intend to make it.

But every once in a while, you have to throw the diet out the window and let the sandwich win. And this sandwich won. I'd post a picture, but apparently my wife and I decided photography was less important than eating it. We absolutely demolished it before either of us thought, "Hey, we should take a picture." Even better, one sandwich was plenty for both of us. Generous portion, incredible flavor, and every bite was worth whatever guilt I was supposed to feel afterward. Next visit, I'm going after the steak sandwich. If it's even half as good as this one, I may have just found my new favorite sandwich spot. 10/10 -- would happily skip the diet again.

Earlier in the month, I was finally able to check them out for the first time. I had my eye on their Italian hoagie, which is listed under the Cold section, but I know better at this point in time of living in the South and the many Italian hoagies that I have had to refrigerate. So I ordered it without the tomato or peppers and served cold. I ordered it through the bartender, who told me that they do serve them cold and that they were out of peppers that day. Turns out they were not out of peppers and they did not serve it cold. I can't eat peppers due to food sensitivities, so I sent it back and asked for it to be re-made. This was the bartender's mistake, from the receipt I could see that he didn't send those notes to Fat Kid, to be clear. The second rendition was made correctly, and it was definitely tasty, but they are overpriced. It's pretty obvious from my picture that this wasn't some hefty, super stuffed and loaded with meats/cheese hoagie. It looks like a normal 6" hoagie. Not worth $11 for it, in my opinion. I'd rather spend $16 at Stanley's or $10 for a full-size at Mr. Submarine.

I am kind and generous in my critique and try to maintain a professional decorum. With that said, I ordered four pieces of Whiting, sweet potato fries, green beans, and three chicken thighs. All of it was garbage!!! I expected four normal-sized pieces of fish, but instead, I received cut-bite-sized fish. The grease that was used to fry this fish was not fresh. My chicken thighs looked and tasted like they had been cooked some days ago. I received approximately 11 fries, and the green beans came straight out of the can with no seasoning. I understand that we live in trying times, but this is ridiculous. Usually, I would give restaurants the benefit of the doubt, but I can honestly say this is a one-and-done for me.

It also looks like they get a lot of to go orders. I started off with the fish and shrimp platter. I'm not sure what that's called but the fish was fresh, fried to perfection.
