Pure nostalgia #stuffys! Years ago patronizing the Harrison St location (in the VCU area) I can still remember the smell of the bread! Last night was no different and to add one of the original sando experts is still working at the Libbie Ave location...customer service phenomenal and the subs taste just as good as they were over 30 years ago when I first had one! If you don't know they will steam your sandwich, which is their signature technique for a yummy sandwich preparation! The decor is retro to include an OG arcade machine and the walls are filled with art work that you can buy! We ordered the giant West Virginian (turkey, bacon and cheddar) with an array of yummy toppings to include homemade pesto which Mimi added to her half and she said it was delicious! When I walked in, I was hit by a wave of dank, moldy aroma... that should've told me something. This Stuffy's has been around for decades, and frankly, it looks like it. But, my Mom wanted a sub and she rules! So I ordered the Star (like an Italian sub) with double meat. The extra meat made up for the spongy, chewy bread. The lettuce looked past its prime, but the other fillings looked fine. My purse took a hit for the amount of food I received. I wasn't impressed with this sub... but the stars are for the friendly staff. Next time we'll go get stuffed elsewhere. read more

Love the Stuffy's location on Libbie Ave. The guys who work there are so helpful and patient when me and my girlfriends show up right before closing to order several subs. The veggies are always fresh and they have good desserts too. Ate a few bites of the carrot cake they had and it was sinfully deliciously rich. I usually order the Max on pita. Was great this time and every time. I know folks are saying that it is just a sandwich. I agree which makes me think there's very little room to get it wrong. Ha! I also ordered a steak and cheese. Wasn't as crazy about it and I believe it was the lack of seasoning during the cooking process. But, it was freshly made and I can appreciate a hot sandwich regardless of seasoning. So, ask them to add a little seasoning if you like your meat with a little more taste. Visit them sometimes. Love the artwork that dons the walls as well. read more

Been going to Stuffy's various locations since I was young but have since moved from the area, glad to see this one is still here. Went for lunch today and it was just as good as I remembered it. Still great quality, great folks working there. I'm a fan of Italian subs and there are definitely a few places in Richmond that make great ones. Stuffy's is the one I come back to most often though, feels more accessible and straight forward. The Star has always been my go-to, my folks get Great Gardens wraps, both are great sandwiches. My wife and I had a lunch craving for a Stuffy's sandwich and gyro. We used to love going to the location off of Forest Hill Ave before it closed. Amy reminised about the vinegar sauce mixing mayonnaise and heaps of lettuce on her sandwich. I reminded her of how scrumtious and huge the super gyro covered in tatziki sauce was. To satisfy our craving we set on a mission eat at the one on Midlothian Turnpike only to find out is now another sub shop.. ughh... Ok so we searched online to find that the Libbie and Grace location was open. "To the batmobile Robin" I exclaimed. We arrived and easily found street parking about a block away. It looked nice from the outside and offered some outdoor seating. I love the picture in the mens room. The sandwich order guy offered no smiles but was professional and seemed very knowledgeable about the bread and sandwiches. Of course I went with the Super Gyro ($12) extra tatziki and Amy went with the Turkey and provolone ($7), extra cheese, extra vinegar. We disappointedly watched as he placed a few thin measly pieces of meat on the griddle. (Maybe he thinks I ordered a mini one). I confirmed that I ordered a Super Gyro. Once it came to table. Meh... No effort on presentation, my bread was not a pita. It was thin like a soft taco shell and fell apart as I tried to eat it. Meat had the consistency of a spongy riblet tv dinner. Soooo disappointing.. look at my picture.. :(. Amy's sammich didn't live up to her expectations either. Totally not worth the price paid. We really wanted to like it but couldn't. From the outside I wanted to like this place, it seemed like a quaint little sub shop. There were a few people eating lunch outside on their small patio area. When I walked in the shop I was hit with a sense of time warp, back to 1995. There were what appeared to be specials written on a white board hanging on the counter and regular menu on the wall behind it. I don't believe these are true specials in the sense that they change daily. I will give the guy working behind the counter some credit, I asked for some suggestions and he was genuinely helpful, I settled on the Stuffy's Star at his suggestion. The Star is their version of an Italian style sub with Ham, Genoa Salami, Cappacola, Proscuittini, Provolone. The meat is sliced fresh per your order and you pick the rest of the toppings "Subway Style" from the offerings behind the glass. A regular sized sub here will run you roughly $5 plus tax which I suppose it not terrible. I think what ultimately missed the mark for me here was the bread. It was obviously not fresh baked (he pulled it out of a plastic bag) and a bit dry. A good sandwich or sub has to have a good foundation. The meats and cheese were decent but nothing that was artisanal by any means. I only put lettuce (shredded) and a bit of mayo on the sub which did nothing to combat the dryness. Not sure if I'd give this place another go at this time. If they spruced up the menu and got some fresh bread I think it would go a long way to boosting this places sales. They could also stand a little face-lift store wise, but if the food it good they will come regardless as long as it's clean. read more

I have loved Stuffy's since I was a kid, and thought they had all closed. We looked this one up, and I was not disappointed at all! This is by far the best Stuffy's I've been at yet! The subs are even better now than I remember! They load on the meat and toppings of your choice (with no add on costs like most other sub shops even though they claim not to), and truly make every sub perfectly to order. They also had the best looking variety of desserts that anyone could find something they like; carrot cake, baklava, and a good variety of cookies (not to mention a monster sized cookie). The thing that impressed me the most though was the level of customer service given at this establishment! Everyone was insanely friendly to the point you could hear the smiles in their voices (since you can't see behind the masks). They knew the orders of a couple patrons in front of us as they walked up which tells me the regulars keep coming back! I know I will be going back plenty, and filling up lots of loyalty reward cards! Please don't mop the floor, or wipe the tables with a bleach concoction while I'm attempting to swallow an uninspired sandwich under harsh fluorescent lighting while the cacophony from an 80's era video game drones on in the background, that is, until, the employee with a smoker's hack isn't talking to herself about having to get a new pack of Parliaments and some scratch-offs. Today I can honestly say that I experienced the worst customer service at the Libbie location that I've ever experienced at any restaurant in my entire life. Whoever the skinny white dude is, approximately 50-60 yrs old, you just lost a loyal customer for life with your rudeness, impatience, and overall ugliness. People talk about Bernie's and how rude their service is.....those people are saints compared with this guy. And the subs at Stuffy's are marginal at best when compared with other area offerings. I highly recommend going elsewhere if you are looking for a quality sub in the west end of Richmond. The subs at Bernie's and Superstars are awesome. I've loved stuffy's subs for decades it seems like. I moved away from Richmond in the late 90's when I used to order stuffy's at work many days. Moving back I had forgotten about them until recently when I took a new job close enough for stuffy's delivery. I am back in my old habit of ordering stuffy's consistently - it is delicious! I especially love the great garden. Stuffy's offers subs and toppings that you simply will not find at most sandwich shops like carrots, sprouts, spinach, cucumbers, etc. The only thing with stuffy's is it's always hit and miss with how long you wait for your food. There is just something to be said for a Stuffy's sub. I love them, not sure why they are so awesome- they just are! It might be the way they heat the subs, they use an interesting toaster/flat grill thing with a hand pump. The meat is sliced to order, and they have all the topping you could want. I believe Stuffy's is a Richmond chain, this location is the best, not to be compared to the old VCU location. The Libbie and Grove neighborhood wouldn't be complete without Stuffy's! read more

How is this place rated so low?? Their prices are affordable. I'm talking about $4-5 for just about every 5-6 inch sub / sandwich. And it comes with any toppings that you want. Cookies are tasty and are only 50 cents each. The subs themselves tasted kind of average, but with friendly people and affordable prices I think it's worth a try. read more

Stuffy's Subs has always held a special place in my heart. I ate these subs growing up and always appreciated their option of sprouts as a topping, THANK YOU. Today, they truly went above and beyond. While I was checking out I mentioned that I was bummed I had to restart my punch card, and they were intrigued why. I told them I had my purse stolen a few days prior and without hesitation they punched an entire loyalty card for my next visit.
