Salmon Cake, eggs, potatoes, a Corn Cake, and a pancake
    Demetria M.

In my search for salmon cakes, I found Harold's and it wasn't too far from where I was staying so I called in my order of salmon cakes, eggs, potatoes, a corn cake and a pancake. I arrived and the owner and I talked while my order was getting bagged. This is a takeout only restaurant so call your order in. They also do pop ups around town so follow them on social media. The food was delicious and exactly what I was searching for and I'll be back to try something on the dinner menu.

Fried fish, string beans and potato salad

Found Harold's Kitchen searching on Yelp. In talking with the owner this establishment has been in RVA for 20 years (I had never heard of them). This is a takeout location only for the time being. Upon arrival, you call to notify staff of your arrival and they bring your food out to you. The owner was very friendly and displayed great customer service. Now to talk about my food. I decided on the fried fish, string beans and potato salad but somehow got talked into trying the corn bread (not a skimpy slice). The fish was nicely cooked and very well seasoned, as were the string beans. I was not a fan of the potato salad as it seemed to have too much mustard and it was slightly overwhelming for me. I will definitely go back to get the fish again and try their other sides.

We were looking for a really good breakfast after having an appointment at the local Veterans Affairs Hospital (McGuire). Harold's Kitchen popped up and we arrived in less than 10 minutes. We arrived and I seriously thought that we were at the wrong place; the building looked like it was not open. But it was and we went in and we were greeted immediately by Harold. He could tell that we were first-time customers there so he brought us our menus and sat down and chatted with us for a few before taking our order. Breakfast stops at 10:30 so we both ordered a dinner platter of liver. As we waited for our food a few patrons came and left and each one was greeted by Harold. Our platters were out shortly after and it was straight home country cooking!! He stands by the motto on his apron, "Food so great you'll scrape your plate."

Harold and Harolds Kitchen is one of a kind. It's always great to meet the Owner and Mastermind behind operation. His customer service was stellar! As far as the food, everything was great. I had the Crispy Chicken Wings with Potato Salad and Collard Green w/ Corn Bread. My partner had the Meatloaf with Mac N Cheese, Yams and Mash Potatoes. We agreed that everything was good but if we had to choose one meal it would be the Crispy Chicken Wings with Mac N Cheese and Collard Green. WITH XTRA XTRA CORN BREAD! We will be back!

Had shown with the cornbread !!

Well yesterday evening I was looking for some good soul like what I cook and grew up on. I have to say ... I saw this post and wanted to give it a try. Because they served Baked & Fried Turkey Wing . My Fave!!! I cook them a lot. But I would say it's small but you won't be disappointed. I got the BAKED TURKEY WINGS/COLLARD GREENS/POTAT SALAD & Cornbread ! Charming people of Southern Hospitality. I couldn't wait to get home just by smelling the food. It was soooooo Good. Tender Baked turkey wings, well seasoned greens and potato salad. Prices awesome. I'll be back. Oh yeah cornbread was like a moist piece of cake. Delicious It's in an area maybe better early evening. BUT FOOD WAS SLAMMING !!!! Thank you so much.

Harold's is a nice little restaurant tucked into the neighborhood with some good eats. Them chicken wings was definitely on point. Throw in the lemonade with the tea and you got yourself a meal. Harold definitely gives you a welcome home greeting. This is a hidden spot that you need to drop by.

This place is such a joke , tried to give them a benefit of a doubt and yet again I'm let down , they ain't got nothin on queens !!!! I ordered curry goat my total was almost $9!!!! And this is what I got ... looks like a baby portion size I ate all this in less then 1 minute ... most of the meat from the goat was FAT biggest rip off .. Harold's is definitely your no frills, hole-in-the-wall, good eats experience! As soon as we walked in, we were greeted quickly by Harold!! My boyfriend wanted lunch and I wanted breakfast. They were still serving breakfast but Harold said if we wanted lunch, he would make it happen! (Yessss for the customer sevice!) I had the H.T. III meal (pancakes, eggs, bacon, and grits) and he had the three Turkey wings, collard greens, and candied yams! The pancakes and bacon were good. The eggs and grits were not my favorite. My boyfriend was craving Turkey wings! They were good but I wish they were a little crispy. The candied yams were bomb! Overall cool neighborhood spot, nice people, and great conversation!

It's so cute and cozy in here! Doesn't it give you Beauty and the Beast?? The other side, with booths is for dining in- I was taking-out!

Um, wow. Where does a gal start? This little nugget of heaven is quietly nestled away in my Manchester neighborhood. When you pull up, you'll probably see their daily specials sign to get your mouth watering *heart eye emoji*. When you get there you'll be greeted by either a server or Harold himself! You can either dine in, carry out or just order ahead. They amazingly even have lunch and dinner specials, lunch ending at 3p.m. Anyways, my first time going I got the 3 wings dinner! It came with your choice of two sides (greens and mashed potatoes) and a choice of bread. I'm a wing fiend, and these wings are to live another another day for!! So crispy and yes, perfectly seasoned! I ordered carryout there, and by the time I got home it was as though Harold fried it in my kitchen- steaming hot, such a well seasoned, light and crispy breading. I sit on my couch and type this out, holding the urge to call and place my order until I finish this review. This is a great black owned business that doesn't nearly get the recognition it deserves in an area quickly gentrifying... It truly, breaks my heart that some y'all have yet to try a morsel of Harold's delicacies! Getcha life!!!

It was a weekday after work. I went to my homegirl's house because I missed her birthday I offered to take her out someplace nice. She said no way man and immediately said we were going to this sandwich shop. This was the only thing she wanted. So we were gonna veg out on her couch. Have a couple cocktails and whatever else and watch something on TV. And her new couch is the bees knees. For me, the sandwich was perfect. The bread was beautiful and crusty. I was afraid it was going to be toasted and too crusty, and I'd be fighting to bite it and my sandwich guts spilling out while cutting up my gums and the roof of my mouth like it's Captain crunch or something.. BUT NO! It was PERFECT to bite through. They load you up with the meat they're not stingy. And the sauces... BABY! The aïoli was fantastic. My only beef is that horseradish aioli needed a little bit more of a kick, but that's a personal problem. My friend got the chicken Caesar and I see why it's popular. It is so garlicky and delicious. I already have plans on what I'm gonna get next time I go and I don't live close so it's gonna take a special trip and I intend to make it.

Cons: While I understand the sandwich requires a strong vessel to hold the toppings, the bread was very thick and tough. The fillings did not match the bread proportion on this particular sandwich. The chicken breast was extremely overcooked and difficult to chew. Several pieces were leather-like in texture. Maybe chicken thighs would work better. I love the creativity of this sandwich and I get where they were trying to go, but the finished product was disappointing. A new line cook was being trained so perhaps this accounted for the miss. I've seen photos of the other sandwiches and they look delicious with better proportioned fillings. Not sure if I'll give it another try, but shoutout to all their fans in Church Hill.

Earlier in the month, I was finally able to check them out for the first time. I had my eye on their Italian hoagie, which is listed under the Cold section, but I know better at this point in time of living in the South and the many Italian hoagies that I have had to refrigerate. So I ordered it without the tomato or peppers and served cold. I ordered it through the bartender, who told me that they do serve them cold and that they were out of peppers that day. Turns out they were not out of peppers and they did not serve it cold. I can't eat peppers due to food sensitivities, so I sent it back and asked for it to be re-made. This was the bartender's mistake, from the receipt I could see that he didn't send those notes to Fat Kid, to be clear. The second rendition was made correctly, and it was definitely tasty, but they are overpriced. It's pretty obvious from my picture that this wasn't some hefty, super stuffed and loaded with meats/cheese hoagie. It looks like a normal 6" hoagie. Not worth $11 for it, in my opinion. I'd rather spend $16 at Stanley's or $10 for a full-size at Mr. Submarine.

We were surprised by the size of the restaurant when we walked in. It seems smaller from the outside; not that it was huge, just deceiving. It reminded me of a homey Jason's Deli (IYKYK). The woman at the counter was helpful and kind. We had a few questions about some items on the menu, and she asked the kitchen staff anything that she didn't know offhand. We decided on the fried cauliflower for an appetizer; it was monstrously huge, and much more flavorful than I expected. The spices and textures on the plate added a lot to the dish's overall essence. I ordered the Rachel for an entree, and my partner ordered the Sharona. I subbed the chips for a side salad. The salad was tangy or tart, almost bitter. I didn't mind; I thought it was quite good. It is a lot of acidity if you are not expecting it. The Rachel was fantastic, except that the coleslaw had some onion bits mixed in. We are not onion fans in this household. Ha The Sharona would have been a better choice, as I much prefer pickles to oniony coleslaw. My partner said she really liked hers. We had half a sandwich each for leftovers the next day, and shared the leftover chips, since I finished off my salad the night before. The sandwiches heated up exquisitely in the oven at 325°F for 15 minutes. I felt that Susie's is a definite hidden gem, and I can recommend it to anyone who likes a well-made sandwich. I will be back to sample more of the menu and report back my findings at a future date.

While we all ordered one after the other, our food didn't come out that way. Most of the food came out in about 25-30 minutes. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Juicy! Two people got tenders and three of us got sandwiches. The OG sandwich was very good, just messy! I ended up using a fork and knife bc it got too messy. The Mac and cheese was made with pimento cheese and was very good. My friend who got the fried green tomatoes said they were delicious and filling. Lots of goodies on top. Two friends enjoyed the collards. The only person who was underwhelmed was the person who got the Asian sandwich. Overall, if I wanted a good chicken sandwich and a Buttermilk and Honey was nearby, I'd place an order.

The servers were also tending the bar which was getting decent traffic even at lunchtime. My dining partner says there is a pool table in a back room, and that could be fun to fold into a longer visit. The piped in music was light jazz. The menu is oriented around philly cheesesteaks and variations. I ordered the chicken philly, which was large enough to make two lunches (I brought half home.) The flavor was decent, with seasoned or marinated chicken chunks and veggies & cheese on a sturdy roll. It came with a decent serving of chips. We were served a juice glass of room temp water on arrival and no drink order was taken. Negatives were related to pacing. It took a lot of time for the food to come out. We were pushed to eat even half of our sandwiches within the hour my dining partner had for lunch. The server did not check back after dropping the plates, which could have been an issue if we needed more water. And getting the check was a challenge that took way too long considering how small the place is.
