Shrimp Dinner with Yams, Mac and Cheese, Shushpuppies, Piece of Cornbread
    Nikki J.

I heard great things about Ms. Girlees and was finally able to try. I ordered via third party delivery , and decided on the shrimp dinner with yams, Mac and cheese, and shush puppies. The meal was OK for my first time. I'll give them another try! Shush puppies: these were good! They were a bit oily, like you could see and feel oil in every bite. Yams: it was flavorful, but some pieces were undercooked. Just popped then in the microwave for a bit. Mac: delicious! Nice and cheesy and love the penne noodles. Shrimp: really good! Crunchy and flavorful

This hidden Gem is located in Fulton Hill, so prepare for a little drive if you are not out that way. ordered curbside & i did remove 1 star only because the cashier forgot I was outside and waited 10 min to bring my meal, after calling a 2nd time. I will give her the benefit of the doubt because they were busy & this may not be an option they normally offer. ordered Chicken Dinner with fries & mac/cheese. Everything was cooked well and well seasoned. The chicken was cooked perfectly to a crunch which I love. also, ordered seafood dinner which came with whiting fish, fried shrimp (decent sized and YUM!!) and a crab cake. Crab cake had no filler and was a decent size! next time I will probably just ordered shrimp as that was my favorite. both meals came with cornbread, which was soft and had no flavor of mix (serious pet peeve when ordering cornbread) -overall would visit again to try other items.

Love to support black owned businesses! The service was the highlight of this visit. Good vibes and good people that stand behind what they are doing. Food was good, tasted just like some good ole southern cookin. I ordered the fish and shrimp basket, with candied yams and Mac and cheese. Oh and also had the strawberry cheesecake banana pudding. Would give them a solid 7/10. I'll return for sure.

If you want good southern home cooking in the city, you can't go wrong here! The crab cakes, collards, mac, mashed potatoes.....I can't decide what to review so I'll just say everything is fire. Ms Helen (the owner) is the sweetest, and Trey is awesome too! I took my dad here for his bday 2 years ago and every time I take him there they remember us. I had a friend visit from Wisconsin and she had never heard of a hush puppy lol. Ms Helen personally came to our table and brought her an order of shush puppies for my friend to try, on the house. It's just made from scratch home cooking and kind people. They also do a free thanksgiving for the less fortunate, even after the pandemic and the financial chaos that ensued for many businesses. Just good people. If you're near Church Hill, or even if you're not, please do yourself a favor and try them out!

I am visiting Richmond and several p told to try Ms Girlee's and I am so glad I did. The food was great and and delicious. The combo seafood platter was more food the I good at one time. The Mac & cheese was old of this world. I will be coming back for sure.

We have been hearing wonderful things about Ms Girlee's for a while now but were never in that area when they are open. (As of this writing, there is still a pandemic going on, and hours are fairly short in a lot of places.) We were finally in the downtown area at lunchtime and decided to head over. We looked at the website menu before heading in. They were out of several things we wanted to order, so I was a little apprehensive when my wife had to go to her third choice. But there was no need for worry. Ms Girlee's is good. REALLY good. I got The Chicken Sandwich. Since the fast food clones raised everyone's consciousness about how good a chicken sandwich can be, I have been trying them everywhere that is new to me. This one from Ms Girlee's is just silly good. There is probably 3/4 of a pound of chicken on there, along with house-made lightly pickled pickles, lettuce, and red tomatoes (where are they getting good tomatoes in late October???) and "the sauce" which (I am guessing) seems to be a mix of cayenne or hot sauce, mayo, maybe horseradish (?), garlic powder, etc. This was all served on Texas-style toast. It was a ridiculous amount of food. And boy was it tasty. The chicken was breaded & fried white meat planks, which can easily get dry. These were in the sweet spot -- moist and well cooked. The sandwich came with lightly breaded fries that were a good complement but unnecessary... because.....being a first timer, I foolishly ordered sides. I love country style / soul food veggies. So I added potato salad (did not taste house made, but above average for pre-made) and cabbage. I NEVER order cabbage. What possessed me to order cabbage? Who even puts it on a menu? But I ordered it on a whim and it was savory yummy. Like mom used to try to make but screwed up somehow, you know? I was very happy. Wife settled on the crab delights (instead of the out of stock shushpuppies - the gentleman at the register very helpfully suggested these as a substitute) and shrimp dinner (instead of the out of stock meatloaf we had heard others brag on.) The crab delights were pretty impressive - there was no filler or binder that we could detect anywhere, so we have no idea how these things stayed together. These were fried and had more of that sauce on them. And very good. None of that "this crab meat has been frozen since the Reagan administration" funk to it. They were really very nice bites. (Five to an order.) The shrimp were the star of the day. Moist, cooked perfectly, breaded perfectly, just well executed. I'll order them next time I go. (Wife will still hold out for that meatloaf.) Her sides were mac and cheese, which was one of the best we have had in this town, and yams, which were good but not exceptional. The cornbread was a rarity -- not overly sweet and not falling apart and not transcending into Cake. Instead, it was light, nice crumb, fresh tasting corn BREAD that did not taste like any mix I have found. So overall food -- if all of this is from scratch, I am truly impressed. I want to go again, yes for those shrimp, but also to try my "acid test" foods -- catfish and pound cake. And I like the idea of the BBLT -- a BLT with double bacon. If they execute the venerable BLT like they do a chicken sandwich, my paycheck is going to be in deep trouble. Can't wait. Ms Girlee, I'll be there soon! As to service -- remember, this is during COVID -- we have not eaten inside a restaurant but once since February (and that once, we were the only people there.) So we ate this feast in the car. Nonetheless, the owner went out the back to get something from her car or whatever, and seeing us in the parking lot eating, basically checked our table. Did we need drinks, were we okay, did we know the dining room was open? She was not coming from the position of a restaurant owner, she genuinely seemed concerned that we were enjoying our experience. Who does that after the fact in a parking lot? So overall.... the food was well above average to very good. The staff was friendly and helpful. All the above food came to $52 including taxes and a minimum compulsory 5% tip (we of course added more.) We are definitely going to revisit. Thanks for the afternoon.

Their special Shrimp and Grits - fried cheese grits, shrimp and crispy andouille sausage with cornbread

I decided to venture out of Chesterfield to Fulton Hill after I kept seeing social media posts about this place. Boy, am I glad I finically decided to go! Since I don't really come out this way, I made sure to treat myself. Everything was handled with care, food was hot, wait was not long at all, employees are so hospitable! Let me tell you that every entree I ordered... to say it was delicious is definitely an understatement. I am so glad this place seems to be thriving throughout all of what has been going on (COVID, I'm looking at ya!). One of the highlights of my order was the special they had which were these amazing fried cheesy grits! I've never had grits like that before so I was intrigued. The texture of the grits along with the crisp breading were perfect. The downside with my order, they didn't have the cheesesteak available! However, I knew I had to be back anyway. Instead I opted for the Gillie's Chicken Philly. Just wow. The meat is so flavorful from the brining and seasoning. The portions are plentiful at the great, affordable price they charge! They also run really awesome daily specials as well as delicious items that are not on the menu. Ms. Girlee's Kitchen has earned a new, lifelong fan. I can not wait to be back!

A friend recommended Ms Girlee's to me this weekend and I read some reviews and decided we had to get it this week. I called and placed an order and the estimate was 20 minutes. I arrived and it was ready and the service was very friendly. Everything was packed well and was still nice and hot after a 14 minute drive. We got the seafood combo dinner (whiting, shrimp, and a crab cake) with mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, yams, potato salad, and cornbread. Whoa. Everything was so good, the breading on the shrimp and fish was perfectly seasoned and the crab cake was all crab, no fillers. The mashed potatoes were skin on and the gravy was outstanding! Really loved everything! They have daily specials on the website and even if tacos 3/$8 too. We will DEFINITELY be back.

I just ate at Ms. Girlee's Kitchen in the Fulton area and the food and service was incredible! First, I should mention that they are extremely nice and courteous people. Next, be ready to leave your house when you call in your order. They run through orders fast, but with the appropriate amount of care because my order was PERFECT. That sandwich was incredible. The fries were delicious as well! Only wish the sandwich special sauce was available to dip fries in (I will def ask next time!). They also gave me free banana pudding just because (which was the BEST banana pudding I have ever eaten)! They started this business 2 months ago, so I can't imagine starting a business right before social distancing started but I can say I will be frequenting this business. Check out the menu! Incredible southern food offering. https://msgirleeskitchen.com/

I've lived in Richmond for almost three years and had never been to Bookbinders, so I was excited to try it. We had a 6:30pm reservation and the lot across the street was pretty full by the time I arrived, but thankfully was able to get a spot. We started off with the seared Cajun tuna and crabcakes appetizers. The tuna was delicious and melted in your mouth. The crabcakes were tiny and just ok, so I wouldn't go out of my way to order those again. I ordered the Japanese Hokkaido Pan Seared Scallops, which came with asparagus risotto. This was by far the tastiest scallops I have ever had, and growing up in New England, I've had my fair share of scallops. They were so flavorful and melted in your mouth. We ordered a side of the Lobster Mac and Cheese, which was so cheesy and chock full of lobster. So good! For desert (which I got to go because I was so full), I got a piece of their key lime pie, which came with an oreo cookie crust, and was really tart and tasty. The manager stopped by our table several times to check on us and our waitress was also really attentive. This is definitely a place for special occasions and I'd recommend skipping a few meals as their portions are nicely sized. I can see why this restaurant has been around so long.

The decor & the ambiance of the restaurant embraces a laid back beach motif. Dining at ISC is almost like having the pleasure of taking a mini beach vacation while still being able to stay close to home. The food & the drinks were delicious. I had their Mai Tai, which was very flavorful & visually pleasing to look at. My husband ordered the Painkiller & he said it was tasty & there was no skimping on the alcohol content of the drink. We shared an appetizer of their Wings, which were also flavorful, tender & juicy. My husband ordered the Coconut Shrimp[from the Appetizer menu] & French Fries as his entree & was very satisfied. Our entire meal was very filling. My husband rarely has leftovers, however, our food was so satisfying that on this visit he did have leftovers to take home. As my entree selection , I ordered their Pork Sandwich which came with a side order of fries. I really enjoyed the sauce on the pork & the pork itself was tasty & tender. We shared dessert, the Hula Ice Cream Pie & it was HUGE! It was also total yummy. A perfect combination of flavors & definitely a dessert that was meant to be shared. Throughout our dining experience, our server was courteous, attentive & helpful with menu options. I definitely recommend ISC if you enjoy Caribbean & beach themed restaurants with relaxing views of the James River. That also provides attentive customer service. I look forward to returning to this location in the near future.

Mains were subpar - ordered the pineapple shrimp boat in a pineapple which looked really appetizing but unfortunately this was a situation where the food looked better than it tasted. The rice was unexpectedly plain (could be improved with maybe seasoning or a pineapple fried rice to integrate the pineapple, which was really just serving a structural purpose), and there were only 2 tiny pieces of bok choy despite it being included in the menu item description; our other dish was a shrimp plate, which had more fries than shrimp Recommendations: liked the calamari most Affordability: would say this was not good value for the price paid (~$30/meal) Ambiance: nice restaurant over the James river, with bright blue themed tropical interior aesthetic Service: main issue here was the service, understandably saturday evenings are busy for businesses but it was about ~8 PM when we arrived, and while we were seated relatively quickly (as there were many open seats), it took a while to place an order, and we noticed that the employees/manager seemed very stressed so there was probably something going on (?maybe someone called out sick unexpectedly), regardless it took a while to place an order and even longer for the food to come -- this review is not to disparage the staff (as our waiter was very kind) but hopefully advocate for more employees as the staff seemed stressed :( Good for: aesthetic views (dinner over waterfront)

The restaurant week menu provided a good variety of choices. Everything we had was really delicious. Portions were generous, so I could not eat more than about half of each course and not get overly full, but I assume they are sized for all but the hungriest diner. The venue's sound level was pretty high. I could have left my hearing aids at home so I wouldn't hear as much of the background noise. Noisy restaurants are pretty standard, I guess. The Siren's Song consisted of oysters, fried clam strips, smoked fish dip, seared tuna, pineapple fried rice, and a fried fish collar (sorry don't remember the fish, maybe Skate) with a Szechuan dry rub on it. This seriously was an amazing display. Every single dish just took it up a notch. They were also super nice to accommodate making it pescatarian because the Siren's Song usually has meat elements. The fried collar really blew me away. So meaty, fried perfectly, and the dry rub was so flavorful but not too salty or hot. Despite finishing the whole Siren's Song, we also got the Cascatelli without guanciale which was also delicious. We finished off with their caramel custard which wasn't too sweet and had a great mix of textures and flavors. Also tried one of their NA drinks and a glass of their special chilled Grenache Noir which was surprisingly good (not a big red wine fan). Overall, we absolutely loved it here. When I originally arrived, I didn't see much business but while I waited for my food the cars were pouring in left and right. My hopes for the food increased. There is a menu on the outside that is somewhat difficult to read and navigate. A ton of options with some whopping prices. I ended up ordering the 1 Snack and Fries. I wanted something good but also light as I had another place in Richmond I wanted to try. $14.99 seemed good until I saw this bogus, Local meals tax on top of the state sales tax. This caught me off guard. I ended up waiting in my car for about 20 minutes and later heard my name called over the microphone. The gentleman showed me the food, and it was 3 large pieces of fish. The fish was delicious. The fish was Cooked well, and I could taste the flavor. Way more than I expected. Tartar sauce elevated the flavor. The fires were piping hot and good as well. I wish I had some ketchup, but they were still good. I loved that they were salted but if I had high blood pressure I should have stayed away. You can see the salt on the fries. They were good to me. Overall if I were in Richmond again, I'd definitely stop. The food was good. I would definitely try more options. The customer service was good. The cashier and food distributor were on their A game. Outside could use some love and care but it is what it is.

BRING YOUR WALLETS AND STRETCHY PANTS!…read more We went as a corporate outing group of 5. The front door is a little tight cause as a popular spot there's a bunch of foot traffic. The lady at the front door was a bit staticky but she got us sat fairly quickly so we could deal with that. Vibes are all wooden, but not creaky. Could be a cool date spot, it was very casual so we were able to be a bit boisterous. Good place to chat and blend in. Service was great and friendly and attentive. The waitress we had always made sure our cups were full and we had napkins and what we needed. We didn't get any alcohol, I got an Arnold Palmer, the wife got a midtown. They were both pretty good, I don't know what the difference was but they slapped. Free refills on sweet tea was dope too! The food came out pretty fast for the portions and quality. The wings are a must get, get the large and if you don't finish air fry them back home (reheat is good) (I would get sauce on the side, we did buffalo). We got like a desert style cornbread with syrup and powdered sugar, not normally my jams but totally delicious (my coworker ordered, I am not into sweets; still 10/10). I had 2 buffalo shrimp and they were also good, I didn't get a flick but that's a safe pick. The mains are pricey (typical soul food prices) but fire!!! Portions were good but the quality of goods and meat are awesome. I eat at a lot of places, the quality was really high here so I think the price tag was fair. My wife got the catfish, I got the stuffed salmon. For our sides we got the greens, cabbage, and the Mac & cheese. I had a couple of things I personally like that I feel would have enhanced the meal but the overall outlook is that this is the place to go. The greens were salty as heck and didn't have like a turkey neck or smoked anything in it, could be a regional preference but that was missing for me. The cabbage was also cooked really well and didn't require much but had no sparkle. Great texture but the flavor wasn't there, I'm also Caribbean so maybe what I like is different, the crunch with a kick would have gone far and maybe some salt from the greens in there. The Mac and cheese was good, I like a creamier one but this will suffice tbh. Overall I'm going to give them a 8.9/10. I could have gotten the wrong things or went on an off day but they certainly delivered and the service was GREAT. I would deff revisit, it's got a lot of charm and personality. The staff were amicable and the bathrooms were clean. I would recommend this spot if you're visiting Richmond!

Late to the party but here I BE! This little establishment with its wood floors, high booths and…read moreimpressive black art seems crowded and tight BUT...once you get IN? You absolutely get why. Getting in is the trick. There is no waiting area. The bar is small and fully stocked. It took my family about 45 minutes to be seated. The dining room, wood and walls covered in beautiful paintings of black artwork filled with families celebrating and enjoying huge plates of southern cuisine. Our server, LENA was very helpful and friendly. She made sure we knew what was what. She was Awesome. Okay now this FOOD! So much food and everything hot and fresh. You'll be tempted to order an appetizer. I observed the portions and decided I couldn't eat all that... in a week. Definitely getting the fried oysters next time though. The "Fish Boat" comes with 2, 3 or 4 pieces of whiting. It's fried and the onion and pepper "sauce" is a mustardy, vinegar concoction that compliments the fish perfectly. You have your choice of two sides. Typical southern specialties. Collard greens (no pork added) were delicious, with a little kick; Candied Yams and a BRICK OF CORNBREAD. Light, soft sweet cornbread... my goodness. I don't think I can do this food the proper justice it deserves in this review. The chicken strips; the Alfredo were just as good. Even their version of an Arnold Palmer, (The Uptown) was done right. It's worth the drive and definitely worth the calories. If you love southern food, seafood with an ample serving of back in the day hospitality, (it's on the PLATE) stop by and come hungry. My family said it tasted like Thanksgiving. Family cooking seasoned with love. That's exactly right. Oh! GET THE CAKE... for later
