Let's start with the good: The restaurant is exceptionally clean. It's small, but it gives that quaint, community-eatery feel that's really welcoming. The shrimp and fish were solid, and the gravy on my smothered turkey chop deserves every accolade. It's rare to find true homemade gravy in Richmond, so kudos for that. The yams were top-tier, and the cornbread, while flavorful tasted a bit dry rather than fresh. Now, the food overall was a mixed bag. The chicken lacked seasoning, and the turkey chop, although thick, was unfortunately dry to the point where I couldn't tell if I was eating turkey or chicken. My aunt ordered the grilled salmon cakes, which were a big miss, though she enjoyed her fried cabbage and fried potatoes. Now for the not-so-good: I attempted to call in my order and was placed on hold for so long that I arrived at the restaurant before anyone came back to the line. When I walked in, it wasn't busy at all, no ringing phone, no visible orders, and no customers picking up, which left me confused about why I had been left on hold. Customer service also fell flat. I still tipped 10% because I always do on takeout, but honestly, I regret it. The young lady seemed far more focused on her phone than on making new customers feel welcomed, and that's the kind of thing that determines whether people return. All that said: I'm a firm believer in giving restaurants two chances. If my second visit is better, I'll definitely update my review . For now, it's 3 stars for me.

This is my first visit to Shrimps. I came in to place a to-go order. The restaurant itself was cute and clean inside. I was greeted at the door, so the staff was friendly as well, which I really appreciate. I placed my order and waited about 20 minutes for the food to come out. It was piping hot and freshly cooked, which is always amazing! I headed home to try out the goods. The mac & cheese was amazing! I highly recommend order ordering that as a side. They ran out of yams so I did not get to try that however, I tried the cabbage instead. Honestly, I was not a fan. It was too peppery and it tastes like the oil used had gone bad/rancid. I didn't finish it. The crabcakes were seasoned well, but I felt like they were a little overcooked. The cornbread was delicious. It was light, fluffy and moist. It was probably just an off day. I will try them again because overall, I was satisfied, even though there were a few misses for me.

Shrimps is one of my favorite places in Richmond! It's a cute restaurant nestled in the heart of Northside on Brookland Park. The service is always impeccable. The owners are very personable and they ensure that everything is cooked to perfection. My go to meal is the seafood platter with fish, crab balls and shrimp. I love the little burst of crab you get when biting into the crab balls. They aren't filled with bread crumb fillers. They also have very flavorful sides. The cabbage, greens, sweet potatoes and fried potatoes are well seasoned. The restaurant is pork free, so you don't have to worry about them seasoning your vegetables with ham hocks.

The food is really good! I originally asked for the collard greens but they didn't have any so they replaced with cabbage . The cabbage was overcooked and cold but everything else was DELICIOUS !! I also had chicken alfredo and from my friends reactions , that was really good as well lol . I did have to wait about 40 min to get the food but i think it was just a short staff day or a pretty busy one. Recommend trying !

If you looking for alil southern style food shrimps is it. The ambiance is nice casual good for a date night, small group, or if you want to go solo. There will be alil bit of a wait cause the food is made fresh to order. Started with a rum punch is what they called it but it only consist of rum and lemonade want too bad but wasn't my typical rum punch. Followed by a Long Island iced tea it was ok but wasn't a typical Long Island. The wingettes were the start of the show for me fresh southern fried chicken seasoned to perfection definitely didn't disappoint down to the bone. Then I had the Cajun salmon Alfredo, was seasoned ok but a bit on the salty side if you ask me the pasta was made aldente and the Alfredo sauce was nice and creamy but just alil bit too much salt for me. I'd definitely come back for happy hour which is 4 to 7 pm weekdays. And I'll definitely like to try the rest of the menu.

Everything was deeeevine!!! The atmosphere, service and especially the food! Our girls night out was so much fun at Shrimps! Bre took great care of us. We had fish, chicken, crab balls, Mac & cheese, fried cabbage and fried potatoes. Everything was delicious! The chef did not miss not one time. Definitely gotta take the hubby soon.

We stopped in around 4:30pm on Friday evening before a date at an establishment down the street. We never eat dinner that early but the timing wouldn't have worked out for us after our event. There was one semi large party dining in when we arrived and the establishment is smaller but there was space for us away from that party. All of our food was delicious! I probably could've ate it all in one sitting if I wanted to be gluttonous. The fried chicken Wingettes were seasoned and fried perfectly. As were the house potatoes. Normally I try to get vegetables when I go out to eat but what's a cheat meal without mac and cheese. Since we were there during happy hour all of the cocktails were half off (top shelf liquor not included). Both of my jolly ranchers were great. The only reason I'm giving 4/5 stars is because my boyfriend's liquid marijuana was too sweet and his Long Island was slightly off. They also were out of Jack Daniels which is what I wanted at first. I could see one of the staff making the drinks diligently and tasting so I appreciated the detail but I don't think they have a bartender. I could also tell how popular they were based off the number of people ordering take out and grubhub orders. The staff were very nice and accommodating. I always love patronizing black owned businesses and this one was no exception. I felt welcome from the time we arrived until we were thanked when we left. Will definitely visit again when I'm on that side of town.

Soon after we. Ordered the octopus and mussel appetizers a storm came in and the rain fell pretty hard. Our choices were to run back to the hotel or stay and dine huddled under an umbrella. Being a little wet with beverages and good food seemed the better option so we ordered more food. The octopus was great. I have tried it prepared many ways and here it was both tender and flavorful, really done well. Shrimp cocktail is usually pretty basic, but often the simplest dishes demonstrate the most skill. This is truly one of the best I have ever had. The shrimp were plump and flavorful. Their cooking stopped at just the right time leaving a slight bit of translucent hue, but still cooked through. Very nicely done. The salad with home ranch was dressed nicely and the dressing was light. The scallops were cooked well and perhaps my only criticism is that the corn purée was better in concept than execution. I can't say enough about the staff. We were two people on a Sunday night crazy enough to dine in a downpour. The staff never made us feel like they wanted to punch out, embraced us being outside and were creative in waiting on us with umbrellas to keep the food from getting wet. It would have been understandable for them to limit the trips to check on us, but they persevered and made us feel welcome. If you are in the area, highly recommended stopping by, rain or shine, and sampling their menu. Nicely done.

Hats off to the staff at Lillian who continue to be wonderful, but now that they have scrapped…read moretheir dollar oyster lunch specials, the food has absolutely nothing to offer. Like too many restaurants in the Scott's Addition area, this is seafood cooked without finesse and then absolutely brutalized with absurd amounts of palate fatiguing, brash, loud flavors. Every item on the menu endeavors to conceal mediocrity in the quality and handling of the ingredients with explosive, overwhelming additives meant to shock you into submission. Things like black garlic and chili oil, raw garlic, sesame seed oil, and punishing heat are inescapable on the menu, which really says to me loud and clear "we do not understand the appeal of seafood, and might have a fundamental misunderstanding about good food in general." I don't exaggerate when I say these dishes would be improved (setting aside things like inability to properly cook octopus) by scaling back the flavors to 5-10% the loudness level they are currently at, to let the ingredients speak, and to make the dining experience less of a punishing marathon with no relief. I have had much subtler and more skillfully balanced dishes at Indian and Thai restaurants, cuisines known for strong flavor profiles. I'm through listening to these Richmond restaurants trying to excuse simply bad food by claiming "that's the nature of the cuisine." In this case, Lillian claims that dishes characterized by these cacophonous competing flavors is "South American." No it isn't - the person conceptualizing the dishes is just a bad chef who doesn't know what he's doing, and at the prices Lillian charges, that's inexcusable. Drowning every dish in flavors that overwhelm the palate is not a way to respect your ingredients or your diner, and only communicates youth and insecurity. Anyone who's eaten widely and knows their ingredients will rightly feel assaulted and insulted by this overpriced, unskilled fare. To anyone who decides to go anyway: Good luck with the digestive distress, and with the taste that will still be left over in your mouth the next morning, no matter how much you brush your teeth.

Sadly when we came in Wednesday night at 9 PM, we were told they were only serving drinks at that time. I emailed the restaurant and was informed that on most nights, they indeed close the kitchen and only serve drinks after 9 PM, but that on weekends they'll keep the kitchen open longer. I'm so glad we came back on our last day of the trip. It was a Thursday night at 7:45 PM and pretty full. Thankfully, there were some seats at the bar which we preferred anyways since you got to watch the oysters get shucked right in front of you. We ordered the bread service, and though it said house cultured butter OR whipped beef tallow, our kind server made sure to ask if we wanted one or both (the answer was both, of course!). We also got 4 Virginia oysters (appreciate not being forced to order in increments of 6 or 12), chargrilled oysters, and "dessert tonight" which ended up being the most perfect chocolate cake (I think it was describe as something else, but my memory fails me) with a white chocolate ganache-like topping and pistachios *swoon*. I tried the wine of the day which was an orange wine that it was a nice not-too-sweet, not too dry wine. I'd recommend it with a pasta or fish. Our server (didn't catch his name but he had a nice brown sweater and a beanie, receipt says Taylor so maybe that's his name?) was so nice! Great vibes all around from the interior to the bathroom to the service. Would definitely come back.

(Making the reservation over the phone was not overly warm and fuzzy but hey I get it you probably are tired of having to take reservations over the phone all day lol). We got a popular app- the squid, white bean and arugula which was bright and flavorful so lived up to the hype but a little disappointing in that there was not a lot of squid so $18 for beans and arugula seemed a bit much. Also got the seafood bisque which was pretty tasty. For entrees we got the halibut, the monk fish fra diavolo and the spaghetti with crab meat. The spaghetti with crab meat was shockingly good. It better be for $40 but I don't always like crab bc it can be overly fishy in a not good way but this entree was very good. We also liked the halibut- nice piece of fish perfectly cooked. The MonkFish had a nice flavor, but the bones in it was a little bit overwhelming, and kinda made eating a lot of work. Seemed pricey to me since only one of us had a glass of wine and no other drinks, but I guess $50 a person sans cocktails and dessert is the new norm?!
