We had a really great experience with Backbone Adventures. The day started at their store front where we did all the waivers and got the safety helmets and gear. I really appreciate that they ask people to know their limits and put safety first at all times. It's a good mix of making sure their customers know what they're getting into, but still ensuring you have a responsibly great time without being a downer. We rented a hal-f-day side-by-side ATV and did Johnny Park. We've had experience ATVing before recreationally in Northern Michigan but also in the mountains of Jaco, Costa Rica. This was a great experience set in Colorado. As one of the "easier' trails, it was still fun and exciting with some difficult parts. For our first forray into ATV off-roading in Colorado, it seemed like a good intro to the type of the terrain. The next time we return to Estes, we're absolutely going to come back to this company and try another trail and whole heartedly recommend it to our friends visiting in the area!

This was awesome. Staff was friendly and helpful. They know when someone is experienced or not and can assist more with beginners. I have years of off-road experience so I only needed assistance with the maps- which was explained perfectly. This was so fun and I hope to do it again with a bigger group!

We had a fantastic experience with both the staff and the equipment. We rented out an ATV and took it out to Johnny Park. The owner and staff was gracious enough to allow us to film on the premises and even some of the orientation before you drive away with the equipment. We ended up with an extra day and we found this opportunity to rent aJeep for the day. First, $399 for a well outfitted Jeep, with the full intention that you would be off-roading with it is a pretty good value. They had a couple insurance options and weren't adamant about buying them, either. I chose the damage waiver ($30) but not the tire waiver ($25). But that was pretty much it, except for sales tax. Sometimes you rent stuff and it's $399, but by the time you add all the required stuff it virtually doubles. Anyway, we got the Jeep from 9-5, and they recommended arriving at 8:30 so we could get the most of our day. Check in was polite, thorough and not rushed, and we were still on the road at 9:00, with great trail recommendations based on our trail style goals. We had a great time, with a very capable Jeep and definitely saw part of the Rockies that you WON'T see driving through the National Park.

I had high hopes for my ATV adventure in the Colorado while visiting my mother, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a terrible experience. Key points Lack of helmets, They provided helmets, but there weren't enough for everyone, so we had to use wet helmets from previous riders. This is quite disgusting and unsanitary. ATV breakdown, We rented two ATVs, the ride started off well, my mother's ATV suddenly broke down, with loss of steering. Thankfully, it happened at low speeds and on a straight path. As a result, we had to use the working ATV to transport our group back to the car, leaving the other two members of our group stranded in the cold woods. Inconvenience and time wasted, The breakdown cut our ride short by a couple hours, as we had to use the working ATV for transportation back to the car. It took us 30 minutes each way, covering 8 miles, to get back to the car. We didn't stop for dinner or food and went straight to the shop. Poor customer service, When I returned the ATV, nobody was present at the shop. I followed the instructions on the sign, left the keys in the car, and left. Later that night, Bonnie from BBA , called me at 10 pm on Sunday to discuss damages on the other ATV. She only mentioned a loose door and wanted to charge me the 1500 insurance deductible for it. This was highly inconvenient and unprofessional. Maintenance issues, The company's maintenance standards were lacking. When we picked up the ATVs at 2 pm, one of them was covered in mud, unwashed and had damages . However, when they pressure-washed it at 10 pm on a Sunday night, give me a break, it wasn't even cleaned after the previous group , they suddenly found damages. It is unrealistic to expect an ATV after driving over 50 miles in the rocky mountains to not have some wear and tear, it's rocky, it is going to be bumpy, things are going to get loose. This should be expected from off road vehicle. The door was still functional and in good condition and simply needed to be tightened. Lack of apology or compensation, The Bonnie never apologized for the inconvenience caused by the breakdown or offered any solutions, discounts, or refunds. Despite giving us a faulty ATV, she chose to charge me for supposed damages to the other ATV. This felt like a scam tactic. Edit She refunded my mother 100. Unreasonable repair charge, Bonnie claimed the loose door would cost 1500 to repair, but she provided no evidence or receipt for the repair. It was an unauthorized transaction with an inflated repair price. Edit The rep emailed me an in house invoice with much more damages than discussed previously and again provided no evidence or receipt. The damages she listed were replacement parts that did not need to be replaced. Example A new roof. Unprofessionalism and poor maintenance, This experience highlighted the unprofessionalism and poor maintenance standards at Backbone Adventures. Wet helmets, dirty ATVs, mechanical failures, and loose parts were recurring issues. Attached to this review is a picture showing how clean one of our group members is while the passenger seat is completely filthy, which confirms that the ATV was given to us covered in mud. The ATV also had damage to the roof, which shows they do not replace parts, but will charge you for it. I was willing to accept the poor experience and the financial loss, but attempting to charge an additional 1500 for damages for a loose door and nonexistent repairs is unacceptable. Instead of rectifying the situation caused by their faulty ATV, I received no refunds or discounts, only a late-night call about the supposed damages.

We had an amazing time renting a couple Can-Am X3 Turbo Max machines! Our 9-yr old granddaughter was nervous at first but by the last ride, she wanted the front seat! We loved the Pierson Park trail and only came across one Jeep the whole time. The machines were well cared for and the friendly staff gave us excellent instruction for a fun afternoon adventure!

I wanted to rent an Ebike over the weekend. Even though it wasn't their policy Missy and the Backbone team made it work. I had a very nice, well-maintained Aventon Crossover bike for 3 days and enjoyed the bike paths in and around Estes Park. Thanks to Missy for all her help, and great customer service.

Found Backbone Adventures while searching for activities near Cheyenne. Was excited to see that not only do you get to rent a UTV but that it was also unguided. Allowing us to venture out at our own pace. Rates were very fair and the vehicles were in great working order. Store front was on the main road in Estes Park. They had a great selection of Jeeps that we might take advantage of on a future trip. For this trip we rented a 2 seater Polaris for my wife and I, it was perfect. When we got to the store it's a good 30 minutes to the base camp. Once there they are kind enough to walkthrough where to go, what's ideal for us and their maps were great. Provided trials, hiking spots to consider and lookout spots. Only downside was that we didn't have a roof cover so when it started pouring we were drenched unlike some of our fellow renters. All and all, highly recommend for anyone wanting to venture out.

We took out the UTV's out and I have to say Backbone Adventures made for one enjoyable day. The staff and owner are really helpful getting signed up and felt very comfortable with the equipment which is basically brand new. This was our second ride at backbone and this time the razors were even nicer with gps, stereos w Bluetooth and an amazing suspension system. We did a half day ride again which was perfect for a December ride with unusually warm temps. The Lower trails are closed do to snow and drifts which wouldn't allow us to get the crash site. But there is plenty to see and despite snow and ice these machine eat it up. We did rent 3 machines 2 x 2 people razors and then 1x 4 persons machine. All were great. I was a bit unhappy to have found i was told we bent one of the front A suspension arms and was charged $250 for that despite the insurance which covers the entire machine with a $2000 deductibles so needless to say this was not part of the issue we were accused of. I do trust these folks but we honestly have no idea how this happened. Aside from the end of the day downer we have really enjoyed our time our on the trails. It's a great time if your looking to get lost out in the Rockys. From what I spoke to the owner about the summer time is supposed to be a wonderful time with much more trails available to check out as of July through fall. I would defiantly want ton give that a try next visit. As a tip- returning customers do get a discount... so if your coming back be sure to call to get a 10% discount.

Rented a Jeep last Friday for my family to enjoy some trails. The check-in was super easy and we were on our way to the trails! It was an easy, scenic ride to the Switzerland trail. Backbone gave us a paper map to help us find the trailhead and a tablet with a GPS map to navigate the trail. Honestly, it was super easy to keep our way. The trail was just the right amount of fun. Such an awesome experience! We rented a UTV a couple weeks ago; in late April. The trail still had some snow since there was a blizzard two weeks before we arrived in Denver; which just added to the experience! The trails are so fun & the staff was beyond nice! AND we saw some elk right by their office!. You have to check in at their main office first, then you drive up to your designated trail. Once got the UTV, it was all fun from then on out! Only about 3/4 of the trail was open when we were there because of the snow, but we had just enough time to go through the entire section that was open. When I visit Denver again, I will definitely be coming back to go around the section that was closed. Also, there are some helmets with the GoPro mount available, so if you have the equipment to attach it, I would definitely bring it with you! read more

We were looking to rent ATVs when we learned we could rent a jeep. The experience was fantastic from the moment we walked in the door. Two very help women greeted us and gave us all the information we needed to reserve a jeep for later in the week. The directions to download an app with the maps of the trails was very helpful and we found both trails easily. After years of vacationing in the area this is at the top of the list of things you should do. The trails were challenging but we saw some amazing sights that were off the normal tourist trails. Checking the jeep back in went smoothly and without issue. This is one activity that will definitely be repeated. Highly recommended. read more

To start with I love JEEPS! That being said I couldn't have had a better day spent in the Rockies!!!! It was amazing experiencing the mountains from a jeep with the top off. The views were amazing and the jeep just put the fun I to it. They have the best prices that I could find plus they let you use a cooler for the day for free. The store was good. The employees were great. They helped us decide were to go and which trails would best suit our needs. She was very helpful and full of great info on the trails and the views and was very kind and courteous. The Jeep was a 2008 lifted Wangler. The Jeep had a few damaged spots on the body but it didn't matter because we were heading to the trails anyway. The interior was fine and comfortable and relatively clean ( by the end of the day it didn't matter anyway). The jeep ran and drove great. Everything worked nicely. It climbed up and over any obstacle that I came too. read more

I would give 10 stars if I could! My husband and I were very impressed with our experience here. We rented a jeep for the day and had a blast!! The lady at the counter was very helpful and gave us maps with several different trails. We went to the Pole Hill trail first and it was pretty crazy. I would not recommend this to inexperienced drivers. There were a lot of steep and rocky climbs. It was so much fun! We then went over to Storm Mountain and had so much fun there too. You could spend the entire day at Storm Mountain. We had so much fun that we were going to book for another day, but they didn't have anymore openings. I highly recommend this adventure to anyone who is out for a crazy adventure! read more

We rented a Jeep and spent the day on Stormy Mountain. After talking with B.A. staff we determined Stormy Mountain to best fit our wishes for the day. The B.A. staff was right, it was the perfect fit for our family. Stormy Mountain was the adventure we were looking for. Plenty of trails, wildlife and beautiful Rocky Mountain scenery. Several pull off areas for lunch or breaks. Very secluded area, we didn't see anyone all day. The wife and daughter (6) loved it. We will be back next time in the area. read more

We drove to backbone to get checked in. They had limited helmets there and said there was more at the actual atv site. When we got to atv site, they only had 2 helmets to choose sizes from. We arrived at 245 (46 min before our ride time) and got our helmets and checked in. Then we drove 30 min to the atv site. We were supposed to ride from 330-430 but didn't actually get started until about 350. I think you should check in earlier than 45 min so you get your riding time. It was really crowded when we went which was unfortunate bc we had to stop a lot. The trails were good but not as difficult as last year when we went. Also very dusty- wear clear goggles or sunglasses. I definitely enjoyed going at 330 instead of 830- we got great sleep prior to riding. Overall tons of fun! read more

This place is honestly the best, we stayed in a cabin in Estes park for a week and heard about this place that rented jeeps/atvs etc. We decided to pass by and immediately loves the atmosphere. It's family owned all the jeeps look great, they let you know what the best trails are for your experience level. Prices are reasonable! The jeep is basically yours the entire day no guided tour. This was the highlight of our Estes Park trip! We stopped into the shop while in town and got set up to go out later that afternoon in a 4 seat Kawasaki Teryx. The process was quick and easy. We drove out to the trail head and everyone was super nice and helpful. We called our UTV "the Orange Beast" because it was unstoppable! We took the trail up to the plane crash site because my husband wanted the challenge of a technical ride. The map listed sections as "gnarly" and they definitely were! Our kids, ages 7 & 12, had a blast but the youngest started getting motion sick and cold towards the end. I would recommend dressing warmly or at least in layers with gloves and maybe rain gear if you don't want to get muddy. We did and it was fun! read more

My boyfriend and I made a reservation a week ahead and once we were at Estes park they said they couldn't give us our rental. What was the point of making reservations then? Just because people were paying upfront doesn't mean they should be prioritized before those who have made reservations...luckily for us GREEN JEEP TOURS had taken us on a wonderfully tour! Backbone Adventures lacks professionalism. read more

This place was awesome! The guys that work here were super helpful showing us how the atv's work and which trails would be best. The trails were all beautiful and some had lots of muddy puddles that were very exciting to drive through. The weather was kind of crappy as it started to snow while we were out exploring. Still a wonderful experience!! read more

I was so looking forward to this since my friends and I booked our trip! The reviews were amazing and I wanted to see what the hype was about. The people here are sooooo nice to say the least. However, everything went to shit very quickly. On the website it states winter discount and it's a $50 difference from the actual price. When we got there to book it they lady said it was $399 opposed to $349 as advertised on their site. Apparently the winter discount stops on March 1st even though there are no dates advertised on their site stating such. However she did give us a 10% discount to makeup for the false advertisement. Moving along we sign the papers and everything is honked dory. There was an employee that gave us the instructions and the walk around of the ATV and the jeep. The company provides you with a GPS to make your way to the trail. Issue #2, they state their winter discount ends on the 1st of March but your only allowed to pick from one trail because of the winter. Contradicting right? My thoughts exactly. The trail that your allowed on is 55 minutes from the pick up location. As the employee set up the navigation system she maximized it which caused it not to give us turn by instructions or speak out loud. If your not familiar with Estes park there are a lot of cliffs and drop off and the last thing you want to do is fumble with something while pulling a trailer and driving up curves. Needless to say we missed the turn to the trail had to turn around and use our phones which didn't get reception. We made it to the trails 40 min after the start time which in result didn't allow us to do the whole trail. When we made it back we expressed that to the lady and she gave us an additional 10% off for the inconvenience. After being lost, getting there and rushing it didn't make for a good experience. If I was to visit Colorado again, I believe I would do this again maybe not with the same company. I truly had high hopes and was disappointed start to finish. read more

Our group of 15 non-locals rented ATVs to ride in the snow. Everyone at Backbone was exceptionally helpful from making the reservation all the way through completing our damage reports. It's not easy to drive on snow and ice, but I believe they prepared us well. And the ride was fun, yet a tad bit terrifying at times (not gonna lie). And the views were gorgeous. I was skeptical about trying out the e-bikes to ride around Lake Estes because 1) I was 58 at the time and 2) hadn't been on a bicycle in over 10 years. Once I got used to the motor kicking in while I was peddling, I had a blast. Mostly kept it on the #1 setting but switched to #2 when going up steeper inclines. Beautiful scenery and some wildlife along the way. Andy and all his employees were great with their explanations and tips!!! Great group of people. Recommend covering your ears and wearing gloves if it's cold out. Also, when testing the e-bike in front of their store, point the bike in a direction where you can go straight a bit before turning on the motor. It's really hard to react for a turn when the motor kicks in until you get the hang of it. Would definitely do this again!!! read more

Backbone Adventures is hands down the place you should be renting your ATV or Razor from in Estes Park. It is family owned, and the entire staff makes the whole experience that much better! Just talk to the staff, and based on your level of experience they will recommend the right trails for you. We were able to take advantage of some advanced trails that normally we would not have been able to do with the other guys. Can't say enough good things about these guys! read more

We took our daughter and her friend to Estes Park and rented a jeep from Backbone Adventures. Best decision we could have made! We took the jeep to Storm Mountain all the way to the top. The views from the top were AWESOME. After we reached the top and drove down, we went over to Pole Hill Road and drove the trails there. My daughter was ecstatic because we saw a Moose! I've rented vehicles before from other companies in other cities for offroading. Backbone's price and service were exceptional. Highly recommend! read more

5 totally inexperienced women had a great time. It was (at first) really scary but after we got used to the ATV's we all had a great time. The staff is what made our trip extra special. Even though this was an unguided tour, they took us down some challenging trails and also took us on a brief hike so that we could all view the lake covered in greenery and flowers. read more

Very professional and they get to know you as well. Rented a side by side for 3 hours and it was an amazing experience. Not only did they explain everything, but after the trail riding they sent us an email that was personalized from our conversations. Cannot wait to go back to Estes in the summer and rent a Jeep from this company. read more

Rented the Razor first of Dec 2016, weather was awesome. Great trails, the staff was amazing. The process was soooooo easy AND the price was extremely reasonable. Great place to rent! The trails were lots of fun. Check in was smooth. I was honestly expecting it to be more just straight paved trails but there were all levels of difficulty. We even saw a Moose swimming in the lake at one of the view stops. ATVs ran great and had no issues. I like the fact you drive yourself up to the trail head because you aren't having to wait on shuttles and slower family groups. read more

While vacationing in Colorado from California, my husband and I rented a Razor for the day. We left with plans to buy one of our own. What an amazing time!! Being able to ride around by ourselves (unguided!!!) was so great. We stopped for a bit and did some hiking too - you can do what you want and go where you want to go. There are different trails so every skill level will have something to challenge them. I would suggest renting a Razor over an ATV though. The trails seemed like they'd be hard to navigate on an ATV unless you're super experienced. Just my two cents though! HIGHLY recommend this and we will definitely be back! THANK YOU! read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. They will charge you for any "damages" after your ride. My 2 girlfriends & I were very safe & did not even use the difficult pathways because this was our first time doing something like this, so we made to play it very safe. We went much slower than what is normal, allowing other guests to pass us. However, when we returned the ATV, the gentleman said they the rear axel was out of line as if a big rock hit it. He asked to wait a minute while he assessed the other ATVs coming. He hardly even looked at the other ATVs and let them go. These ATVs were all driven by men. He then came back to us & said it was going to be an additional $195 for damages. If we were driving crazy I would understand the cost but there is just no way that we could cause that damage by the way we were driving. I genuinely felt that we were taken advantage of because we were three young girls. I will Never recommend this place. So many other options in Estes park. read more

My husband and I rented a 2 seat RZR, our start time was 3:30PM for 3 hours. We went to the office to sign all the paperwork and get instructions on how to get to the location of the ride which is around 20 miles from the office. Everyone at the office was very helpful and I really liked that the girl was wiping off the pens before they handed them to you (COVID). We drove out to the location and there were very nice views on our way out. We finally found the location and the guys running the show explained the trails, the machines we were renting and all safety rules. There was an easy trail so you can practice and then you can make your way to the trails you want to do. 3 hours was more than enough time for us personally. We stayed on the easy and medium trails since it was our first time. We really started to get the hang of it towards the end. It was a bumpy ride and I was thankful for the helmet. They did mention that there had been moose spotted in the meadow, we got to see a 2 including a bull moose, it was really cool. It was fun to rent a RZR and get out and do something we normally would not have done. Overall, the experience with Backbone was great, the RZR ran really well and they wanted you to have fun but be safe at the same time. read more

If you're going to Colorado and will be visiting Estes Park or anywhere near there for that matter then renting a Jeep or any of their other utility vehicles is a must do. We arrived 30 minutes early and got checked in. Backbone got us checked in quickly, provided some helpful input on trail recommendations and got us on our way. The Jeeps that you will be driving on the trails are the Jeeps in the photos. Real nice Rubicons with awesome suspension setups. They will also take the top and doors off if you would like. We rode Pole Hill, Johnny Park Loop, and Pierson Trail and I was blown away the way the Jeep was able to handle the terrain. These trails weren't just typical smoothly paved trails. We were climbing over some huge rocks and doing so while going up or down steep inclines with cliffs on one side. It was awesome. Scenic views, we stopped for photos I don't know how many times. We even saw a moose. You honestly can't beat it, for the price, the quality of the Jeep and the duration that you get to utilize it, hands down the best value. It was a great experience and I am so glad we did it through Backbone Adventures. We will be back! read more

This place was a blast!!! One of the most fun days I've ever had. My friends and I were up in Estes and wanted to rent snowmobiles, called Backbone and they told us there wasn't enough snow for snowmobile, but suggested we try Razors? AWESOME. Great suggestion. There was still plenty of snow but these things ripped through it. Very Exciting, very fun. The woman at the shop that got us set up was really nice and the guides up on the mountain were great too. Sadly we got stuck (our own fault) and didn't make it through all the trails but are absolutely coming back to try again. This place was great in the winter, cant wait to try it in the summer as well. The machines we rented were great, not junk, ran well had no problems...my only suggestion would be a better map to get from the rental place to the ride spot but full disclosure it could have been me and friends not reading it correctly and its a very fine map. My girlfriend and I decided to do something a bit more adventurous during our weekend vacation in Boulder, so glad we found Backbone Adventures! Andy was a terrific tour guide -- we each rented ATVs (and had never done this before), but he did a great job teaching us how to ride and we each got the hang of it pretty quickly. We rented a jeep and took it to Storm Mountain for the day. We had a blast. My kids loved it! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The 2 door jeep we were going to rent had an issue (probably a minor one) but they decided that they would upgrade us to a 4 door jeep for the day just to be safe. The jeep was great and I highly recommend the 4 door as it has a lot more space in the trunk for a picnic lunch and anything else you would want to bring along. I also like that they record the walk around before you leave. So there is no fear of bringing back the vehicle and arguing over any damage that may have been done. We would LOVE to do this again and probably will in the future! read more

My fiance and I went to see my son get married. I wanted to do something special for all of us. I checked out different options, and a full day of trail riding in a Jeep looked awesome. I must say that from start to finish, it WAS awesome. The staff was super friendly and very informative. The day was full of laughter, hoots and hollers, just all kinds of crazy good times. SO Much fun! My fiancé and I stayed in boulder with friends and dedicated a day to going up to Estes Park and renting the razors and I would have to say it was probably the highlight of our entire trip! We can't wait to go back soon and do it again! The entire rental process was smooth and very quick. Everyone there was very nice, knowledgeable and helpful! The machines they use are top notch. The only downfall was that half of the trails were closed due to a 4 foot drift which they of course can't control. The parts we were super excited to go to weren't open so that was a little sad. Took my family for their first time renting Polaris Razors!! It was a blast! Machines were well maintained and we had free run of the amazing trails and I mean amazing! 3 hours is ample time to get thoroughly and wonderfully muddy and wore out! Staff was so kind! I was sure to leave a nice tip. Only caution, get there early because you are required to drive 20 miles to the trail head in your own vehicle after you sign in and get your helmets. Loved it! Growing up here in Estes, I was a wrangler for a guest ranch. I took people on horseback rides. It was the best job I ever had, and after years of fumbling around, trying to find my calling, I thought back to those days and decided to take a chance. It panned out and here I am, loving what I do and the people I meet each day.

The trail guides you meet when you arrive at your final location are more knowledgeable -Their public bathroom in EP is disgusting. Be sure to take care of biological needs before you get there -Make sure you get a helmet that doesn't move at all when you shake your head unless you want a headache -You have to drive roughly 30 minutes to the mountain where you meet your guide and get the ATV -If it's winter, be sure you're driving a vehicle that can make it back to the ATV spot. It's a bit tucked away and I was glad to have my AWD SUV. If we were driving a low-profile car, I'm not certain we would have been able to get back there -Dress for the weather/experience. The guide requests to keep 20 mph or under and the wind is going to hit your face and hands. If it's snowy/muddy make sure you're wearing boots because the snow is deep when you get off in places The trails themselves were super fun. However, when we were there in early February, all the trails weren't open. That's perfectly reasonable from a safety aspect but something to keep in mind when you book times. We were had done every available trail multiple times by the end of our two hours. (Two people). The guides mentioned you can get off the ATV and walk around and/or do some light hiking. However, there were quite a lot of people enjoying target practice so we did not do any exploring or go to far off-trail. All of the marksmen/women were safe and responsible but I wouldn't advise hiking around in case they can't see you. We had a really amazing time and the drive to and from the mountain is beautiful. I would definitely go back and do another ride with them.

Pay attention to the markers you are not suppose to pass (private property) and hidden ones before the gate. People are helpful. Take a map or 2. Covid notice: only the driver is allowed back into building at a set time for instructions. There is social distancing and masks required in building when renting. Helmets are disinfected. You can take masks off when you get up to spot and in your own ride. Note: It is about a 26 min ride up the mountain from the place where you rent in town.

We did a little poking around on the net and came across Tourbikes.com. Neither of us wanted the typical loud Harley, we wanted something more geared toward a sport touring bike. Tourbikes.com fit the bill. They have several different styles of BMW along with a Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, a Suzuki, and a Can Am Spyder. The rental includes, helmet/helmets, raingear, tour bags for the bike, and optinoal GPS for a minimal charge. Bill, the owner, takes care of the motorcycles and keeps them in tip top running condition. We rented the BMW F650GS Twin, which wasn't the nicest bike he had but it suited our needs just fine. The hand warmers were wonderful for the night ride and trips to the summits. I weigh in at 220, plus had another 50 or 60 lbs of gear, 6'-1" and the bike handled beautifully. If you are shorter, say 5'-5" the bike is a little difficult to mount and dismount but once you are on it you should still be able to comfortably touch the ground. It had plenty of power for the mountains. But enough about the bike and more about the business. The owner is friendly and knowledgeable about not only the bikes but where to go and what to see in Colorado. The only downside that I could ever find is that you need to call about a 1/2 hour ahead to meet up with him at the store. This is such a miniscule inconvenience I almost did not mention it. But that is what Yelp is for, to get all of the details on a business. Do not let this small detail deter you from renting here!!! You WILL NOT be dissapointed. The prices were about the same if not just slightly cheaper than the other business we checked. I am betting though that if you go to one of the other larger rental shops that you could be stanging around waiting your turn to get on the bike and ride. Not here! We were in and out in just a few minutes. NOT THAT I SUGGEST DOING THIS but I was able to contact Bill late in the night to ask a few questions about renting the bikes. I believe it was 8 or 8:30. Anyway, he was extremely easy to contact and to talk to about the details of the rental. We will be renting again soon. He has a nice stable of BMWs. He includes bags with all of his bikes, which is a great addition for those of us planning a multi-day tour. Also, this bike has a taller aftermarket windshield that provided good body coverage, and the slipstream over the top did not interfere or cause turbulence for my full face helmet. Heated grips and accessory power for heated vest were welcomed, as temps were 40s-50s, spring in the mountains! Also, the bike already had a RAM mount ball on the handlebars, so I was able to mount some accessories I brought. Will definitely rent again.

My family and I recently rented a couple of ATVs and Razors with Backbone. We had an absolute blast and I am looking forward to doing it all over again. Having said that, I'd like to share a few tips/details about our experience. Like most people have stated in previous reviews, even though your rental time shows 8am/12pm/3pm...you definitely want to show up an hour ahead of time to get checked in at the office in town, then make the 25-30 minute drive to the actual vehicle site in the woods. Estes Park is notorious for events taking place and traffic can be really bad. So showing up an hour ahead of time will ensure you get the full rental time you're paying for. And if you rent a Razor, you're going to want every minute of those 3 hours. Unfortunately, one of the ATVs that we were to be assigned to broke down and left us short of a vehicle. Hey, these things happen. Instead of cancelling all together, (they basically have just enough vehicles to cover the reservations for the day) my brother offered to take on the challenge of a dirt bike. This turned out to be a bad idea. Unless you are an experienced trail rider I would not recommend a dirt bike. Even the easiest trails (the black trails) have some major challenges and are covered in giant rocks throughout. These trails are not the place for amateur riders. You will seriously hurt yourself. The same can apply to the ATVs. I've driven ATVs before, but I was definitely not cut out to operate an ATV for 3 hours on these trails. About an hour in, my arms were shaking, my thumb was tired from hittin the throttle and my entire upper body was pushed beyond the limit. I also had a death grip on the vehicle with my thighs the entire time, so they were spent too.There are parts of the trails where you really, really need to be careful and not push it. It takes concentration and responsibility. This is not the time to learn how to drive an ATV. Lastly, RENT A RAZOR!!! OH.MY.GOSH. I highly recommend ditching the idea of renting an ATV and go for the Razor. When I could no longer handle the ATV, I swapped out with one of my family members and took over the Razor. I immediately regretted renting the ATV. I basically had to chisel to grin off my face when I got out of that thing. It was beyond fun. They took on the trails like a champ and were so much easier to handle than the ATVs. I really, really, really recommend considering the Razors over the ATVs any day. I also recommend everyone renting their own Razor. You are not going to want to give up your turn for someone else. Trust me. read more

Pro's: nice people, good equipment, and decent backcountry scenery Con's: 1. Their promotional videos show you crossing streams. These do not exist. The whole ride is public forest service roads with no streams. It's beyond imagination that they put this in the video when nothing like that exists on the trip. 2. They say not to exceed 20 mph but on 99% of the trip, if you exceed 5 mph you will likely crash or damage the ATV/UTV. These are not roads you can just ride. They are so overused and ill-maintained that you can't just drive along and enjoy it as you'd assume you could. For the driver, it's WORK the entire way and for the riders, it's a chiropractor trip after. Every few feet there are major ruts or rocks that require you to go SUPER SLOW. We averaged 5 mph the entire trip. And if the driver looks away for a second to enjoy the surroundings, there will be a price to pay. So this ride is basically 3 hours of banging, jostling avoiding obstacles for the everyday low price of $219. Some may be so starved for the backcountry that they enjoy this, but when I think of an ATV ride this is NOT what I envision. 3. The two places that have views require ADVANCED off-roading ATV skills. As someone who's spent hundreds of hours in ATV's this is not a stretch. Otherwise you're riding a mountain trail. 4. The lake at the end of the main road is nice and a very short walk. But we were there in late July (last week) and it was covered in Lilly pads, so kinda ruins the high mountain lake fee. 5. There were about 20 vehicles that went out in our group, making for a very crowded road. Add terribly inexperienced drivers to this mix and you have a recipe for trouble. So if you expect seclusion and a time for your group to enjoy the place alone, this ride is NOT for you. SUMMARY: If you want a hard-core off-roading experience that bangs you all over the place hopping rocks, this is for you. If you want a leisurely ride where you enjoy the Colorado backcountry, I'd opt for a horseback ride over this any day. I felt ripped off in a major way when it was over. Not to mention the misleading video of ATVs crossing streams that do not exist on the ride. read more

I rented a jeep for two days with my three daughters (16,18,20). Driving a Jeep off road has been on my bucket list for a while, and this was a great place to start - not to mention the surrounding beauty of the area! Very friendly staff, and knowledgeable about the trails and equipment. They walked me through a few trail maps offering suggestions and then walked through operation of the Jeep itself. Well equipped 2021. The provided GPS directed us right to the off road trails and kept us on track while there. We did Pole Hill, Johnny Park, and Pierson Park, followed by Switzerland trail over the two days. Pole Hill was a little intimidating at the start being my first off road experience (Other than mudding as a teenager with four wheelers and old pickups), but the Jeep just walked up the trail and offered a glimpse into what these can do. I loved every second of it and was hooked. Each trail offered a little bit different scenery and trail type and made for an enjoyable adventure. The last bit of Pierson Park offers a very steep grade going in and coming back out. It was very fun creeping back up the trial. For the most part, we only ran into a few other Jeeps and a handful of side by sides, so it was nice to be out there alone, with just enough company in case something happened. I didn't really know much about the trail rules as far as right of ways, but we sort of figured it out and one of us was always able to pull off to the side to let the other pass where needed. I would love to come back and do more challenging stuff, with another Jeep and someone that knows what they are doing. The girls also did enough trail driving, that we will probably need to rent two the next time we come out. Thank you for the fun memories with my girls Backbone Adventures!! Note: Old Fall River Road within RMNP is also awesome and worth the drive, but we did this with my daily driver. read more

SECOND VISIT - 2020 Second trip out with a Jeep from Backbone Adventures! This time we got a chance to take out Gobi onto Middle St Vrain as well as Coney Flats. Staff discussed some concerns with the difficulty of the trail, but didnt talk us out of it. While the trails were a little more difficult than the trails we did in 2019 up in Drake, Gobi didn't flinch! On the mirror subject from 2019, we had the doors removed again which means no mirrors, obviously. I am comfortable driving without, however I also feel it would be a cheap fix to have at least a drivers side mirror added for safety reasons not only for the customer, but the business itself. We did receive a handheld this year, but didnt even open it as we had planned our route ahead of time. We will be back to Backbone Adventures again! (See Below for 2019 Review) FIRST VISIT - 2019 Experienced wheeler from PA here. Got to take out "Tang" today from Backbone Adventures...2012 JK. Performed FLAWLESSLY, even led my cousins Rubi on the trails of Storm Mtn. Staff was helpful in recommending trails to take and even loaned a handheld device to assist in navigation. At the end of the day staff was very friendly, even after we brought "Tang" back after curfew due to some holdups on Trail #153. Only downfall was no mirrors with having the doors off...Staff stated they have heard the complaint before, and would be hoping to fix it soon. Something I did forget to mention to staff was the addition of a charger for the handheld device for navigation. Battery was dying rather quickly throughout the day. All that being said...I would HIGHLY recommend this company for your CO Offroad Rentals! read more

Very friendly and helpful staff. Easy to find. Quite popular so I suggest that you make reservations long before you plan to be there in order to get what you want and when you want to go ( we wanted a 2 seat Razor but they were sold out a week before our arrival) Our 4 seater Kawasaki ATV was only 2 weeks old so in great condition. If you have any back problems, stay on the easy trails with a few moderate areas included. We did the all day rental and tackled trail 202 to the plane crash site ( some of the rocks/ sm boulders we had to navigate were pretty harrowing) and then we had a short hike to the site. Wear shoes with good traction, there is a lot of loose gravel and small rocks on the hike to the crash. We also tackled 203 which is like climbing up a dry riverbed... constant rocks/ boulders to navigate and constant jostling so definitely not recommended if you aren't a rugged adventurer. Trail 105 will take you to Pony Lake where a lot of Moose like to hang out, however we did not see any wildlife the day we were out other than squirrels and chipmunks. I think you can easily get to the plane crash site and do some of the regular trails in the 3 hour rental option but if you want to do all the trails and maybe a little hiking about, do the full day rental. We took our cooler along and I was glad for the water... it is pretty dusty and you will get dirty! Helmets are required ( we brought our own) and they have several to choose from. We also had our own bungee cord to strap down the cooler, but I believe they have straps there to use as well. read more

I took my mom to Colorado for her first time to enjoy some mountain adventures. This company did not disappoint and fully delivered. We rented a Polaris Razor XP 1000 for the two of us. Check in process was incredibly easy and fast. Then you drive 18.6 miles to the mountain site where they actually keep the bikes. Finding the site was no problem at all if you follow the directions given at check in. Once we got there a guy named Brandon explained the trails to us and helped us pick which one we wanted to ride. He was very polite, thorough, and informative. He really knew his stuff and he made me feel confident about mapping the trails by myself once out there. I also appreciate that he did not talk down to us considering we were just two females by ourselves renting and riding this big Gnarly atv! He also explained how to use the atv and demonstrated all the options and I had no problem driving it. Thanks Brandon!!! The atv Also had navigation which ended up being helpful when riding through the trails. When speaking of the bike itself, it was powerful and worked perfectly. I can't believe the beating those things can take and the rocks they can climb. Truly awesome! We enjoyed our 3 hour ride and would definitely come back and do it again. My mom was screaming and laughing her head off with excitement the entire time. Definitely a fun activity for a couple or a family. Thanks guys! read more

We visited Estes Park last week and Backbone was at the top of our list! We did the 8:30am-11:30am time frame and rented a Razor. It was a BLAST! Andy and Ryan (and the rest of the crew) were very down to earth, friendly, and professional. Ryan went over the short list of "rules," as well as the map of the trails, and how to operate the Razor, which we got a brand new Razor, and then we were on our way on the trails. There were several trails to go on and beautiful views, it was an absolute blast and such a great way to spend part of the day (or a full day) around Estes Park. There are so many trails that it's not crowded and everyone is mindful that there are others using the trails. I have seen some reservations/people that are unsure if you need to be a "pro" to operate the ATVs - you do not. Ryan showed us everything we needed to know (which we did have experience but its not needed) and they are there to give you tips to keep you safe. The ride is not guided, you have your freedom, but the crew is there if you need them which makes it even better. I would highly recommend Backbone Adventures, the crew is awesome, the ladies are super friendly in the office, and just overall a great experience. We definitely plan to ride the mountains again with Backbone next time we are in Estes and I hope you do as well! read more

Backbone Adventures is several steps above anything else I have ever rented. First off, everyone I had contact with at the company was extremely friendly and genuine. Amy behind the frond desk, and Andrew at the trail made me feel like we had been friends for years, and actually cared if you had a good time or not! There wasn't any trying to up sell, or high pressure tactics to buy insurance. They were very straight forward and their machines were far superior to the other company's that were on the trail at the same time. My RZR was able to blast through a snow/mud section that the kawasaki's were getting stuck in, and it climbed any hill I wanted with the heart of a mountain goat. The best part was they just let you go, and you can ride at your own level, within reason and the rules of the National Forrest. There is a letter to you from the owner on the back of your map that is some of the best and most honest advise I have ever seen about your riding/driving. It's a must read. I have grown up on dirt bikes, four wheelers and trucks. Usually if I rent something, I am stuck with a group that has that one person that makes the whole group go 0.5 MPH. I enjoyed every second of this. I will be going back with friends and family. The only thing I would do differently is rent the GoPro. read more

We had an amazing time! Every single staff member was super friendly and welcoming. When we arrived at the trail we were given our safety directions from Mr. Bo-jangles and he was absolutely wonderful. He explained the safety measures and precautions and went over all the trails and which ones were easy, moderate and hard. He gave us specific directions on a short walk to a beautiful lake view as well as a view allowing you to see the mountains from a 180 degree view. He gave us specific directions with our side by side and helped us feel comfortable before we went out on the trail. When our 3 hrs we're over, we were greeted by Mr. Bo-jangles and Owen. Both of them genuinely wanted to know about our experience, the trails we took, what our favorite was and how we liked it. Our side by side had GPS to help us know where we were and how to get back and we also could connect to Bluetooth and listen to our own music! We were able to bring a cooler to have drinks and snacks as well. I would recommend this experience for any individual, couple, or family. Backbone is definitely the company to go with in Estes Park. I can't say enough great things about this experience!! This was one of our planned activities on our trip from Minnesota to Colorado and we are so glad we did this! Booking was extremely simple, check-in at base was quick and easy, and everyone there was courteous and friendly! We rented a 2 person Razor, which was perfect for the trails out there! The trails crew was waiting for us with our rental ready to go when we arrived at the pick-up location at the trail. The guys out there were also very friendly, knowledgeable, and you could tell they simply love their job! We did the full day adventure which allowed plenty of time to take every trail, but also park, and walk to the different locations that had beautiful views along the way. It was really great to get to see the different sights that wouldn't have been accessible by our personal vehicle! The Razor ran perfectly for us, got us through all of the terrain without an issue. The adventure allowed us to feel like kids again! We experienced all varieties of trails from dirt, puddles, small rock to large bolder type rocks, lots of twists, turns, and climbs! It was a BLAST! Going on an ATV ride is hands-down the most fun you can have in the Estes park, and Backbone Adventures is the go-to. We had previously done paragliding in Aspen and white-water rafting in Numbers, but the ATV ride knocked everything else out of the park. Few pointers to make your trip even better: 1) Most importantly - enjoy the trails at your own pace, a pace you are comfortable and feel safe with. Remember, however, to maintain a certain amount of speed to let the suspension do its work 2) Make sure you watch the two videos Andy has put up on the website beforehand, they will make planning your trip easier and teach you what you need to know about an ATV (both me and my girlfriend had little to no previous experience with ATVs) 3) Choose a trail less-taken, even though it might take a little longer to get to 4) Plan to arrive 30 min or 1 hour early (there is always some roadwork somewhere) 5) Get off your rear and stand up as much as you can, since your own body is part of not only the suspension but also weight transfer on an all terrain vehicle 6) Letting the Backbone Adventures guys refuel your vehicles for you once you are done is an absolute bargain Big shoutout to Andy and the team, this was the highlight of our Colorado vacation. read more

GREAT TIME !!!!! I started to plan our July family vacation in April. I had done lots of homework on trail rides because we have been considering it for the last couple vacation's in the black hills of South Dakota. Now that my kids are all over 18 we decided to make it this year in colorado instead of south dakota, Great CHOICE, as The staff at Backbone was extremely helpful with everything including dozen's of phone calls and lots of safety concerns. Since we had 10 people in our family, Including my 3 year old grandson. I had rented 3 razor's 2 quad runners and a full size 4x4 jeep. The store staff walked us thru all of the safety concerns and precautions and made us aware of ALL the true dangers including the real risk of accidents with a group this large. We were very prepared which made the day even better. The trail crew was AWESOME making sure to give us the run down on which trails we could handle and where to go once we felt comfortable with our machines and skill level.The trial crew even found my nephews wallet he lost and we were able to retrieve the next day.I can honestly say we will be back. Everyone agrees it was the BEST VACATION EVER THE VEIW'S ARE AMAZING, NOTHING LIKE IT!!!!!!! read more

I had friends recommend Backbone this past summer after they did a 3 hour UTV rental. They said it was enough time, but wish they had done 6, so we did 6 just to be safe. It was so much fun. 10/10 would recommend. I can't say enough good things about the company and the experience. Everyone was friendly, advice was great, and the views were incredible. It was just a great experience and I can't wait for next summer when things warm up again. My two pieces of advice, if you're considering a rental from Backbone: 1) Arrive at the shop 45 minutes early. While your reservation might be for 10am, you still need to sign a waver, grab a helmet, and drive to the trailhead, which is about 30 minutes away. I'm sure there's information about this on their website, but its worth mentioning. Even being about an hour late to the trail, the remaining 5 hours was well more than enough to explore and do all the offroading we could handle. 2) Have fun, but don't be crazy. There are other people on the trails using everything from dirt bikes to SUVs. Its better to be safe and enjoy the views than smack into a SUV on a narrow trail because you're too busy being a dumbass. read more

First let me say it's a dusty, muddy, and rocky excursion on high powered 4 wheelers. But I'd do it again in a heartbeat. You'll get a towing vehicle and a 4 wheeler on a trailer so be prepared for something different. There are several options requiring anything from a 20 minute drive on up just to get to your 4 wheeling destination. You'll need some knowledge of trailering, ratchet strapping, and unloading/loading a 4 wheeler. Sounds a bit intimidating, but the staff are eager to help. Your actual 4 wheeling adventure "time" will include the drive to and from your chosen destination so plan accordingly. You'll be breathing dust, flinging mud on yourself, and tossed about in the rocky terrain, but go live a little! Side note, pay close attention during the walk around inspection of the tow vehicle and 4 wheeler. These folks use body cams during the review to protect their investments. You are responsible for all exterior damages including sidewall tire damage to the 4 wheeler tires. I did some minor body damage to the Polaris' fiberglass and was expecting a HUGE repair bill. But these folks were EXTREMELY fair in those charges. read more

I have rented ATV's many times in my travels but I was especially taken with a gentleman at Backbone Adventure ATV Rentals in Estes Park. I rented twice in September on 2023 and he assisted us both visits. My wife and I were prepped by Everett Bowles. His enthusiasm and kind nature translated into ATV trail preparation and safety talk was breath of fresh air after a tough few travel days. He totally put my wife at ease whom has not ridden with us much. That put me at ease. To be honest I felt that this guy had a financial interest in the shop by the level of his enthusiasm. I have owned businesses and this guy is a major asset. Standout. Equipment was great. We even dented a panel loading at the trail and brought it back a bit late and the return crew was super smooth and professional as well. They had a panel book with photos and immediately (not when you are 45 min down the road) charged a small amount for the part only (no labor) and a very fair small late fee! EXCELLENT run shop with professionals. I even joined the Polaris Club to continue to rent with Backbone Adventures upon my Estes visits into my retirement. Gary Y read more

We're visiting from Hawaii, and renting an ATV from Backbone Adventures to ride the Switzerland Trail was easily the highlight of our Colorado trip! From start to finish, the experience was unreal. The staff at Backbone Adventures were some of the friendliest people we've met--super welcoming, knowledgeable, and down-to-earth. You can tell they genuinely care about making sure you have an amazing time. The vibe was pure aloha, even all the way up here in the Rockies! The ATV was in excellent condition--powerful, clean, and ready to tear up the trail. The Switzerland Trail itself was absolutely breathtaking. From the forest paths to the mountain views, it felt like something out of a movie. We got a perfect mix of adrenaline and scenery, and we were grinning from ear to ear the whole time. Backbone made everything easy--they gave clear instructions, great tips for the trail, and no hidden fees or stress. Just honest, top-notch service and a killer adventure. This was our second time renting a jeep from Backbone Adventures and we were not disappointed. We had been once last year and we had so much fun that my son requested to come back this year for his 4th birthday. From the moment we showed up until the time we returned our jeep the staff went above and beyond to be helpful and make sure we had a great experience. During checkin we casually mentioned this was our second time renting and immediately the gentleman helping us informed us we should have received a 10% discount on our rental when booking. When he went to process the discount another team member informed she had already processed a refund prior to our arrival that morning (unbeknownst to us), we were impressed. The equipment was in great shape and exactly as we expected. No issues at all out on the trails and we even saw a moose! Upon returning the jeep and informing the team member it was my sons birthday and he had the best day she provided my husband with a toy jeep at no charge for the birthday boy! We will definitely be back to Backbone Adventure & highly recommend this company. Great people, great time! read more

This was my first time in Colorado and off-roading on an ATV or Jeep was on my list of things to do. I was lucky enough to find this place so close to where I was saying in Estes Park. I was to set up a whole day of off-roading in a 2 door lifted Jeep for about $200. They were nice enough to let us pick it up as soon as they opened at 7am, even though they advertise a whole day rental as 9am-5pm. I wasn't able to get their until 9am, but the fact they would allow me to get 2 more hours with the jeep was very generous of them. As for the off-roading experience, it is adrenaline fueled and unlike anything I've ever done. The trails can be challenging at times and requires full focus and attention. Theres a disclaimer/warning on their pamphlet that I recommend everyone read. It really makes sure you approach the trials with the right mindset. Overall, it was an unbelievable experience-both in interacting with the employees of the company and actual driving/off-roading. Definitely worth every penny. read more

I found Backbone Adventures online when I was searching for my fiancé's birthday gift. The idea was to get him a gift certificate that he could cash in at the time of his convenience. Since their website did not mention anything about gift certificated I quickly called their Estes Park location and spoke to Amy who was more than happy to help me with my request. A few days later we got the certificate in the mail and we were off to our Jeep Adventure a few weeks after my fiancé's birthday. Upon arrival we had to fill out some paper work, which took about 5 minutes, and then we were told we were upgraded to a 4 door jeep (instead of the 2 door that I paid for) because our 2 door had some slight complications. The car was in a great shape and very clean. We took in on the Storm Mountain trail and had a blast! We did not return the car in a really bad shape, but it definitely had to be cleaned after. Once Amy inspected the car, we just handed the keys over and said our goodbyes. read more

My family rented several Jeep's (1 Wrangler, 2 Gladiators) from Backbone Adventures, and we had an amazing time. Of all the things we did in Estes Park, the Jeep rental was everyone's favorite day. And with all the amazing things to do and see in and around Estes Park, that's saying a lot. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and knew exactly where to point us, so that we would have a great time without wondering where to go. The interactive tablets had trail maps loaded onto them, and kept us on the right trails all day long. We even had a quick pit stop back at Backbone to get doors put back on as the afternoon rains came in, and the crew got us set up and back out on the trails without wasting any time at all. Both the Wrangler and the Gladiators were able to handle everything we threw at them without any trouble, but we all know you look cooler in the Wrangler. We're looking forward to our next trip to Estes Park, and Backbone Adventures is a big reason why. read more
