Ever just crave a bagel sandwich? That's what I was doing and remembered seeing Back East Bagels when in the area so off I went. It was around 10ish on a Saturday and there was a line, but it went quickly. After checking out the menu I went with a Turkey Tempe on a Green Chili Cheddar Bagel. It came with sliced turkey meat, chive cream cheese, a spring mix, tomato and cucumber. This was great tasting! So dang good. Next time I will had some avocado to the sandwich. As of May 2022, they have doubled their prices for a basic bagel. It's now $2 for a bagel with nothing on it. This changes the calculus, obviously. What used to be the last bargain left is now another rip-off. These are decent bagels, but I really don't think it's worth $2 alone. I was in town for work and got sick of the hotel "bagels ". What a great find. They have awesome bagels, I really liked the Green Chili and Cheddar. A very friendly family run business. It's also a crime to charge people $7.50 for a bacon egg and cheese and a blueberry bagel for $4, I asked why this was so expensive and she said "this is Tempe" which is total crap and disrespectful. Went to back East bagels this morning and got 2 bagels with cream cheese. Everything bagel with roasted jalapeño cheddar cream cheese was the better out of the two, while the green Chile cheddar bagel with onion cream cheese was underwhelming. I would say that both cream cheeses were good though. The pros: quick service, filling bagel, cream cheese was tasty. The shop had some character with license plates hanging all around. The cons: one of the bagels was very soft and too doughy and a little bit sweet for a savory bagel. The green Chile cheddar bagel was not as flavorful as I would prefer. The everything bagel was better, and even had some good bite to it, but for my taste was still a little soft. Overall I would say that for $6 for 2 bagels was a good value and I would potentially go here again, but for now I will continue to look for a better bagel in AZ. read more

Got the open faced lox bagel. Absolutely terrible. Not sure why anything here is as expensive as it is, at all. The bagels are small and mine personally was overcooked, and too damn salty to eat. I'm Jewish, I love a good salt bagel, but this was ridiculous. Tomatoes were pale, the slices of onion were comically thin, and the lox itself was greyish, like the garbage you'd get from an einstein bros. Smoothie was also a disgusting texture, slimy and runny, and nowhere near as cold as a smoothie should be. Spent $20 on this garbage. Couldn't even eat half of it. You're better off going to an einstein bros or something instead. Save your time, and your money. read more

They decided that they'll just answer the phone whenever they want. They can have a line of people going out the door, running out of bagels, and still be selling them by the dozen, leaving the entire rest of the line with literally no options. Any breakfast sandwich you get is microwaved eggs. Nothing "back east" about this place. This place is great for a grab and go bagel sandwich. Tried the August on Cheddar, which had some heat (if you like spicy yum). Cooled the heat with an iced coffee. The coffee is self serving (which I like), but they didn't have any liquid sugar and the vanilla creamer they did have either didn't have sugar or wasn't vanilla creamer. If you're an iced coffee fan with a bit of sugar, you know regular sugar will sit at the bottom of your cup since it has no way to dissolve with ice. We came in at 10:30am and there were plain, poppyseed, salt and garlic bagels, and not many of them. By 11:00am they were totally out of bagels and they are open until 1:00pm. They are not making any more bagels today and the staff is clearly tired of people asking if there will be more bagels. We have been coming here pretty regularly on Sundays after out swim practice, but this has been happening more and more frequently. This spot is a diamond in the rough when it comes to a good east coast bagel in Arizona! Their bagels are not the best I've ever had period, but hands down the best I've ever had in the state. As a vegetarian, my go-to order is an everything bagel with peanut butter and strawberry jam, and I like that they also offer hummus and avocado spread as veggie options. I was so hoping to find a good bagel place for the weekend. This was not what I was looking for. The everything bagel had a spice or something maybe rye that causes me issues, but I got passed that. The bagel was chewy and not crunchy on the outside. The egg was good and the choice of different cheeses was great, but the taste was not to my liking. But each person has a different opinion. We tried BEB again the other day. I find it much different than our usual go to place for Bagels (EB). I like that they have salmon spread here and it's the real reason I came in (it's 50 cents extra). BTW you have to pay extra for any sides, like onion, tomato etc. I don't think they bagels are boiled like "back east" bagel are supposed to be. They are also light bodied or not dense in nature. So they are softer than you might be used to. The smear appears to be whipped cream cheese and melts on the bagel if you order it toasted. So you might want to order it on the side, or maybe opened faced so you get enough, if you like a good amount of cream cheese on yours. Overall the bagel was tasty. The lady at the next table really commenting on how good her's was (not sure what she ordered). The music was pretty good this time (not so much the first time I went in) and the staff were okay. I'm not one to need personal affirmation from restaurant staff but they could be more humanly friendly (ie. "Hi, how's it going? What can we get for you today?" Instead of a blank stare until you order). The place is the equivalent of a dive bar, but for bagels. I might go back if I'm craving salmon spread. Two Bagels with a smear and one coffee was about $11. Peace out. read more

Coming from the east coast, we're always on the look out for a good bagel or bialy(sorry, bagels only) place. Here, they are doing a great job. I might offer up what a east coast bagel is not. It is not a bagel larger then your fist. Those over sized doughy things you find at Einstein's are not east coast bagels and they don't have a hole in the middle like a donut. Bagel should have a hard, glossy brown exterior with a soft interior. Here, that's what you get. Bagels are okay, I've had better and I've had worse. The real star of the show is their raspberry chocolate coffee. It is out of this world delicious! I've never had a great interaction from the staff. I usually go early in the morning and there is an older gentleman working, presumably the manager or owner, he is always in a bad mood and I believe that sets the tone for the rest of the staff because they all seem unhappy to be there. read more

Great selection of bagels, spreads, sandwiches. Lox is expensive but pretty good. Ice coffee is good too. Service could be a lot better in terms of friendliness but they are always fast. I recommend investing in a simple syrup or something similar for ice coffee buyers. And this may be nitpicking but the lids for the ice coffee are terrible and very loose! Overall a great place for a bagel and some coffee. Have returned many times and will continue to do so. read more
