A fun dinner at an intimate restaurant! the interior is very small so I see why it's so hard to snag a reservation. Overall I'd rate the meal 8.5/10. For the trouble of booking so far in advance I was a little let down but it was still a great meal. I do wish they didn't have a rotating menu, because i was really hoping to try the short ribs. Our favorites were the cucumber salad and scallop ceviche. the sauces on both were drinkable!! For our entrees the flavor was good for both the meats but they weren't super tender and juicy, which I would expect for the price. The quesadillas and tortillas included were bomb. We ended with the flan which pleasantly surprised me. It's not a dessert i'd typically go for but the cookie crumble and sauce it was in was so so good. This last weekend my wife and I stopped by Bacanora for brunch. We've got dinner coming up soon, so there will likely be an addition to this review. --BRUNCH-- We stopped by on a Saturday morning, about an hour after they opened and were seated immediately. Both my wife and I are from Sonora and were excited to taste the Sonoran sazón here in Phoenix. The space is small but I didn't feel clustered at all. Being a downtown restaurant, everything is very expensive, but we went ahead and tried the Elote, Papa burrito, and Pork Belly Brekki. Elote - 9/10: Super expensive, and I thought it was going to be white corn as that's what's traditionally used, but overall the flavors were great and the corn was grilled to perfection. Papa burrito - 8/10: Good sized burrito, I'm not much of a salt guy, but both my wife and I thought it lacked salt. Salsa was good, I tasted more tomatillo than anything else - but the chiltepin undertones definitely change it up from a standard tomatillo salsa. Pork Belly Brekki - 10/10: this was the highlight of our brunch. All the ingredients blended nicely, the beans, the roasted garlic, the egg, and the perfectly cooked pork. Arrived 10 min early for our 5:15 reservation. The hostess was friendly and gave me a vibe of the restaurant (loved her). We were the first to sit at the bar. It's a small restaurant and we were well aware of their 90 minutes table limit. I told the bar tender we wanted to try a lot of the menu and said we will order appetizers after the first drink. When I placed our appetizer order, she said i must place my entire order at once. She asked me if I was confused, which I replied, yes I am confused. She did not explain why she preferred to take our appetizer, entree, and dessert order all at once, but re explained that's what she needed to do so. I told her that if we can't order appetizers first, then we would only have the one drink and take the check. She said okay. We left without having dinner. I really loved this place and would recommend it to anyone wanting to get a taste of Sonoran cuisine! My friend and I arrived at 8pm on a Friday night, and we got seated right away since we didn't mind sitting outside. We weren't drinking, so we were happy that we didn't have to wait the 45 minutes. Many people wait to sit inside since you can watch them grill, and you are not allowed to drink outside. However, the ambiance outside is so cute, and it's fun to people watch. Also, the staff were super friendly, very efficient, and attentive, and it made the experience that more special. We ordered the papas sucia and the steak aguachile. Both dishes delicious! For the papas sucia, the bone marrow and birria were so tender and complimented the potatos beautifully. And the salsa and queso fresco.... basically everything delicious! My favorite though was the steak. It was just grilled so nicely, and the only issue with the dish was that I ran out too fast, haha! Everything we had was great! We were welcomed and sat right away. (Reservations) It's a cozy place with a few tables and some seats at the bar. We started off with guacamole and i got the tamarind agua fresca. It was very flavorful and not too sweet, which I prefer. The server explained the menu and portion size and we chose the short ribs and the pollo asado. The short ribs were delicious and served with a little side of cucumbers, radishes, grilled green onion and tortillas. I liked the chicken and felt it was perfectly seasoned and crispy. The chicken came with potatoes, beans, quesadillas, a salsa and tortillas. It's a generous family style portions and we had a lot of leftovers. The dessert was also delicious! There was some confusion about what was available and we ended up getting both the chocolate ice cream with chile peanuts and a Neapolitan flan. I'm giving this restaurant a 3 star review, because I was disappointed and expected better. The cocktails tasted fine, but they came out warm. Not just "not cold," but literally warm like they had been set out in the sun. The bean dip was tasty, but the toppings for the flan were burnt. They had some vegetarian dishes, but they seemed too simple for the price. One was just "burnt carrots," which appeared to be exactly that- burnt carrots on top of beans. The AC was also broken, and we were sweating. The restaurant is in an up and coming area of downtown Phoenix, but as of now it's still sketchy. If a restaurant is charging over $40 for a plate, you don't expect it to have homeless people washing clothes right out front. Everything was way overpriced. Overall, I would recommend going to El Charro next door if you're looking for a pleasant, hipster Mexican dinner. read more

If I had friends come from out of town with an appetite for Authentic Mexican food in Arizona, Bacanora is what I want them to experience. Chef Rene is truly a master of his craft. The menu changes depending on season and availability of ingredients. Chances are the menu will not match what you see online. Reservations are done online and only once a month. I'm going to share a little pro tip with you all. Whenever you're headed to downtown Phoenix always check in for walk in seating. Sometimes people don't show up for their reservation & you win! Mind you Space is limited! They won't sit parties larger than 4. That being said the food is delicious authentic with a unique twist. You can taste the quality of ingredients and the freshness of each dish. I've never seen or tried scalloped ceviche, wow it melts in your mouth. The aguacate is smooth & creamy. The chicken or Pollo asado was our main comes with quesadillas, side of beans and rajas and more flour tortillas with grilled onions, potatoes & fresh radishes. It will feed a party of three easy! The cantarito drink was my favorite. However the bacanorita with a sugar rim was good but it needed a little more kick with more bacanora. The Paloma also was light on the alcohol portion, still good tho. All in all I can't recommend this small space, it really packs a punch of home cooked Mexican food like grandma made. This place is very hard to get a reservation at. I had to get online at 9 am on the 1st day of the month and within 3 minutes the entire month was sold out. The food here is family style. We ordered the ceviche to start and the guacamole. The ceviche was really delicious, maybe the best I've ever had. We followed it up with the pork and chicken plate. The pork was delicious and had pozole underneath. The potatoes were delicious and I enjoyed the beans. I think this place is pretty pricey though. The restaurant itself has about 6 tables and a few seats at the bar, hence the tough-to-get res because it is so small, and well, very tasty. You only have 90 mins to dine here, so they take your order pretty quickly. We started with cocktails and they were phenomenal, and the shrimp ceviche. Their main margarita is made with Mezcal but I swapped for regular tequila and it was fresh and delicious. The shrimp ceviche was to die for - I wanted to drink the sauce! Next, we got the warm cabbage salad. YUM! It definitely had a spicy kick but again, the flavors were out of this world. For entrees, we split the carne asada tostada and the pollo platter (a MUSTTTT). The platter was absolutely incredible. It came with moist/flavorful chicken, warm tortillas, beans, quesadillas, potatoes, peppers, onions, green chilis in broth - wow, wow. I am salivating just typing this! "Hardest reservation to get in Phoenix" based on other Instagram posts, so I jumped when I saw an open reservation. The restaurant itself is quite small on the inside, probably 6-8 tables, which is probably why it's so hard to get a resy. We were early for our reservation time and easily got seats at the bar for drinks beforehand. You can also order and eat at the bar. Street parking around was easy as well. The drinks were honestly great. Probably the best margarita I've had, the "bacanorita" that's rimmed with sugar. The seasonal cocktails were also very smooth and delicious. We had four people and ordered three appetizers and two entrees and that was more than enough. The embered elote is a must when going. The scallop ceviche was tasty and had a kick at the end. The cucumber salad was just okay. For entrees we got the snapper all pastor which was my favorite of the night. So tender, flavorful, and juicy. If you like fish tacos then definitely order. We got the chicken since it was limited availability and there was only one left. It was moist and the beans that came with were good. Everyone says to get the tomahawk but for $300, we were happy with everything else that we got and it ended up being a little over $300 for everything, including drinks. Bacanora is debatably the hottest table in Phoenix right now. I requested a reservation online about three weeks in advance and then got a link 48 hours in advance to reserve a patio table. We didn't get one of the six tables that line the tiny interior of Bacanora--so no booze or climate control. But our tiny cafe table still managed a certain amount of intimacy even being on a sidewalk on first Friday. When I say Bacanora is absolutely without pretense--there's the vibe Bacanora blew up in a way no one was prepared for (thanks, Esquire) and has utterly refused to change. The food was simple, unfussy, but perfectly prepared. We got the frijol dip, scallops, and the flan tart brûlée. The pickled veggies were my favorite part on both the dip plate and at the heart of the scallop dish. The roasted potatoes that masqueraded as scallops where crispy and grounded the fish dish. And that flan tart! I hope the chef considers opening a pastry shop. I hate when people say dessert "isn't too sweet" but this wasn't and it let every element shine. The crust was absolute perfection and the goat cheese custard was unlike anything I've ever had--all about the mouth feel--hiding a preserved orange slice that changed the profile of the dish. Is Bacanora one of the best new restaurants in the country? I have no idea. But it's hard to find a better meal in PHX right now and at the price point, which shuns "fine dining" like the rest of Bacanora, there's really no more bang for your buck. read more

That was totally fortunate as the place is TINY and the line got long. I was maybe 4th party in line and sat at the bar. Fortunately for me the guy next to me in line was a regular and told everyone who asked him to get the Chuleta con Huevo. I had an idea what I wanted, but after I was seated at the bar (where I wanted to go) I changed my mind. Wow, that was SO good!! He was not wrong. I'm generally not a pork chop guy, but this was perfectly cooked and the spices, egg, beans, the whole shooting match was just sublime. I've been to 8 countries in the last year traveling for work & fun and in each place I journey, I always try to get something good, unique or enjoyable. Not bragging, just setting the scene. Out of ALL of these, this was the finest meal if not a top 3. Really, that good. The place was small, stylish. The first time was okay, so I decided I wanted to come back a second time to give it another shot since this place is highly raved about. Sadly, the second visit left me less impressed. Two stars taken off mainly for the food. Some of the dishes we got were a little too spicy (and I love spicy food.) The prices were also a bit steep for food that wasn't particularly memorable. I also got a drink here I think it was called the Ponche and it was good once watered down but the first few sips were very syrupy and thick. They were also sold out of the drink I originally wanted so that really sucked. On the bright side, the service we received here was great! Our server was really on top of things and helped us out a lot with the menu, giving plenty of recommendations. Bacanora is unofficially the hardest restaurant to book a reseveration at, as they're booked months in advance. Luckily I have gone 3x prior to the madness. That speaks volumes in itself, but pro tip- they're now open for brunch. Their brunch menu adds a breakfast component to their delicious dinner menu. I ordered a breakfast burrito and my girl friend ordered the breakfast special. We ordered the cuatro leche cake because we couldn't resist (horchata is the 4th leche). It was good but overly sweet. I got to spend a lot of time in AZ in the summer and had been trying to score a table to see what the hype here was all about. No luck in the summer but am back in the winter and was looking for a place to catch up with a friend. I remembered Bacanora the morning of our date and tried checking to see if any reservations were available. No luck there but I had a hunch and I invited my friend to just show up to see if the foodie gods were on our side. We showed up on a Saturday night around 6 pm and the restaurant was full. They told us tables were only available with a reservation, the bar had about a 45 minute wait, but they had a table open outside immediately. We could get full dinner service outside but alcohol was not allowed. My friend doesn't drink alcohol so we agreed to sit outside. Service was friendly and fast. We ordered the cucumber salad, papas al horno, tostada caramelo, carne asada burrito, and champurrado flan. Cucumber salad was reminiscent of Asian smashed cucumber salad. With smashed and refreshing cucumbers but topped with Mexican queso fresco and a delicious salsa. Caramelo was plated in a tostada raspada (not your traditional tostada de maíz. This is a lot lighter and airy) it was topped with frijoles de la olla, perfectly seasoned and charred carne asada, a delicious salsa that had a certain bullion flavor coming through (in a delicious way), onions, cilantro and queso fresco. When I first saw this tostada I thought I would need a second one and truthfully was a title shocked with how regular size it was for the price but it was delicious, and perfectly filling. If you order this make sure you eat fast because the tostada can get soggy. Burrito de carne asada was perfect according to my friend. Papas asadas were ordinarily delicious and the flan was simply flan topped with some sort of chocolate powder. Would probably not order the flan again. The food was good but all four people at our table were very badly food poisoned (2 of whom live in a different state and the only time we saw one another was for dinner at Bacanora on Wednesday night) . I am still feeling awful and this is the worst food poisoning I have even had. We got the chicken main dish and two shared appetizers. I doubt that our table was the only one to be poisoned that night and we have felt sick for days. Be careful. Also, we tried to call the restaurant to tell them about our food poisoning and there is no working number. We emailed and have received no response. Bacanora has been on my must-try list for months, but reservations are elusive. Since I live 40-50 minutes away, I didn't want to drive all the way without a reservation and not risk getting in. Finally, the stars aligned and I received a Resy notification that a table was available for dinner time! We showed up right around 5 PM with only one other person waiting for a table. The staff was friendly, the music was great, and they seemed to truly enjoy working there. The space itself is pretty small, which explains which reservations are so difficult to get. The waiter shared a special tip - reservations on Resy for the following month go live at 9 AM on the 1st of each month. I ordered two drinks throughout the dinner --the Paloma and margarita. Both were excellent and I didn't taste any alcohol (although I felt it). For appetizers, we ordered the elote and papas. The papas were cooked well with a creamy sauce and even caviar. The elote was also very good but a little bit trickier to share --I ended up standing it up on one end and cutting the kernels off which worked well, although it was a messier approach. For the main, we ordered the mighty ribeye. It took about 45-50 minutes to arrive after ordering, but the wait was well worth it. The ribeye does come out rare, so if that is an issue, I would mention it to the waiter ahead of time. However, for us it was perfect. The meat had a beautiful flavor from the open fire grill and a perfect fat level. The salsas, beans, chillies, tortillas, and quesadillas were also excellent. It is worth noting that the ribeye (listed as market price on the menu) does run $180. Is it worth $180? Maybe, maybe not. However the experience is special and we wished we had two more people with us to share it with. However, I'm not complaining about leftovers, which the staff graciously packed up for us. My partner said Bacanora was on a top restaurant list recently so we tried to get some reservations a while ago. Our name came up and we accepted an outdoor table one a night we were planning to be in the area. I didn't know what to expect but Bacanora is a cute little corner restaurant with a handful of outdoor seating on the sidewalk. No booze outside unfortunately :( So we were seated and had a nice view of the trees decorated with tree-sweaters and stuffies. The view was great until the art gallery next door put out a huge painting with a dandy staring at us and coveting our food. On to the food! We started with frijol dip and it was very tasty! The pickled carrots were the best of the veggies (I'm not even sure what all the different veggies were). Im not sure what chips were (corn tortillas maybe?) but they were light and crisp. For the main I had the daily burrito. It was a little lonely on my plate but the carne asada, queso, and salsa verde on the side were great together. Desert was a flan brûlée tart and it was also great. Flan custard in a tart crust, topped with oranges brûlée-d and a light cream on top. The orange added a great pop of flavor to the flan and cream. We went to Bacanora for our first time in downtown PHX after reading the reviews. The one major criticism we heard about this place is trying to make reservations, so we showed up on a Friday night at 630PM and put our name down for a table of 3 which was only a 1.5 hour wait. We ended up going to a nearby bar for drinks and by the time we came back our table was ready. I HIGHLY recommend walking in at this restaurant and putting your name down and going somewhere else for drinks because it's a very small restaurant. Once we were seated, we truly began to see what this modern Mexican restaurant concept was all about. Our service was amazing and they have a wide array of artisanal Tequilas which you can't go wrong. For appetizers, we ordered Elote (my favorite), Short ribs, and seared scallops which were all awesome. For entree, we shared a 36 ounce Bone-In Ribeye which was plenty for 3 people and also very delicious. Overall, I highly recommend this place if you want a unique Mexican restaurant experience. I heard about this place and instantly went to make a a reservation, a month well in advance. They were totally booked, so I put my party of three on the waiting list. Lo' and behold just a few days before we got a reservation! Once I walked into this small corner restaurant, I understood why the reservations booked so quick. The restaurant itself is very small and intimate. I definitely think it's part of the charm, I got the coconut margarita special, which was perfectly balanced, refreshing and delightful. We then shared the Bine Marrow Elote, Aguachile and Tomahawk steak. It. Was. Delicious. The Aguachile was my personal favorite, so fresh, flavorful and just amazing. Everything else was great too. It's definitely not a cheap meal as the Tomahawk market was $180, but the overall experience, atmosphere and food was worth it for a nice occasion. The steak comes with sides, quesadillas and all the fixing and the whole meal was plenty for our group of three and would have been good for one more as well. The service was awesome. Everyone was so friendly and gave great feedback or insight in the menu. It's team style service, but everyone was on it. Overall, really enjoyed our dinner! If you're looking to splurge and enjoy sharing portions, excellent choice and great options, but also has plenty of other menu offerings at a more reasonable price. This may easily be the best place to eat in phoenix -and I am not exaggerating. We learned about Bacanora from an Eater article and decided to just go yesterday to try it out. It's super small inside - but super cute. Since we went last minute with no reservation, we sat outside. The patio is not included with their alcohol license so we had to have a "dry" dinner, which was fine since we came from a Christmas Bar. The patio is super cute, the landlord for the building has sewn amazing tuts and other crafts that hang on the trees nearby! We ordered a variety of things and split them between the four of us, elote, shared chicken (most moist best chicken ever), ox tail, and then the potatoes. It was all amazing. Amazing service, amazing food and ambiance - cannot wait to return! read more

I don't even know where to begin because my experience was absolutely fantastic! From start to finish, everything exceeded my expectations. First, the staff was incredibly attentive and welcoming. Kassandra greeted us warmly and got us seated right away, setting the tone for an amazing evening. The food was exceptional! Went as a group of 4 and tried 2 apps and 4 entrees and split everything family style. The tables are small so they purposely spaced our food out perfectly.
