We had an extremely poor experience with a carryout order at BSide last night. While searching for a new dinner destination in the Mosaic District, I discovered the menu for BSide. I was intrigued. Always looking for something new and interesting to try, my husband and I placed a carry out order for curbside pick-up on Friday evening (Jan. 21). We ordered the Gumbo Ya Ya, Smoked Turkey Salad, and Meatloaf. The order was ready on time and politely delivered to our car. The disappointment and, frankly, anger, came when we got home and sat down to eat. First off, the Gumbo Ya Ya was fine. Nothing special, but surely overpriced at $10 for a small container. The meatloaf, too, was a very small portion at $18. The meat was dry and overcooked. Once again, nothing to write home about. For these two dishes, I would not have complained about the prices if the food had been stellar. However, that was not nearly the case. The most disappointing of all, and truthfully, BSide should be ashamed that they serve this, call it an entrée, and charge $14 for it was the Smoked Turkey Salad. On your menu, the salad is described as: Smoked Chicken Breast*, Iceberg & Butterhead lettuce, Jalapeno Ranch, Radish, Dried Tomatoes, Picked Jalapenos & Red Onions, Crispy Ham *Note that the carryout menu online incorrectly lists chicken breast, however, the salad did have turkey. I received a very small take out container that had only iceberg lettuce and not terribly much of that. There were maybe 3 radishes, a sprinkling of red onions, 4 jalapenos, no tomatoes, no Butterhead (or Bibb) lettuce. The turkey was pathetic especially when coming from a restaurant affiliated with a butcher shop. There were like 2 slices of processed turkey. Really? For this, $14? And, billing it as an entrée? This was more like a side salad for which you should charge maybe $5. When I went to the web site again after dinner and saw the quote from Tom Sietsema, food critic from the Washington Post, I was in utter shock. I have a hard time believing that he was so taken by your restaurant and food. I read his columns faithfully and cannot believe that he would give you such a glowing quote given the experience that I had. For about $45, we had a dinner worth maybe $15. Needless to say, we will not be returning to BSide and we will surely share our experience with others. read more

Got the mushroom bolognese for dinner and though it's a bit pricey, it's not a bad dish at all. The portion size may catch you off guard as its perfect for one person (and one person only) which is not the norm at many restaurants these days. I would definitely recommend getting the beef fat fries! They come out freshly fried and delicious. My boyfriend tried the pork meatball as an appetizer and don't get shocked bc it's only one meatball, literally only one. The meat was pretty good again as they are known for their meats here but this small dish was not anything that I would crave. If you love Red Apron's burgers then you won't be disappointed as its the same burger here. B-side also has an enormous collection of drinks so get ready for your mind to be blown by their drinks menu. Love the intimate atmosphere and will def come back for food and drinks soon! read more

***Just for drinks*** B Side. Just saying I'm going to B Side seems to give it a certain essence of cool. At least that was my perception when I went to B Side recently. Located next to Red Apron Butcher (you can walk between places without stepping outside, is B Side. It's a small restaurant that focuses on good quality cocktails, extensive beer selection, and affordably priced food. On our first visit for B Side, we just came for drinks. We chose to sat at the bar, which I liked because it gave us a good view of the place. They have a variety of cocktails to choose from and all with unique names and ingredients. You could get a simple rum and coke here, but B Side definitely embraces the craft cocktail.Yet, you wouldn't think it by the plaid wearing bartenders. I love it. B Side is casual and relaxed but the drinks are anything but relaxed. I chose the 10:15 Saturday Night and my fiance chose the sundayafternonweigthlessness (that's exactly how it's written on their menu). Now they take a few minutes to make your drink which I have no complaints of. When the bartender was taking his time to create my drink, I can only hope it is good. Let me tell you. These drinks are smooth, delicious, and well blended. You know it's good when you can't taste the alcohol but trust me it's there. The bartenders at B Side clearly know what works. I am eager to come back and try the food. B Side is small though and it can fill up quickly. I will just have to plan it so we can get a table. But that is simple enough. read more

B Side is a small, intimate, bar/restaurant (emphasis on small) that is right next door to the Red Apron butcher. There is a rotating menu of various bar snacks and entrees along with nightly specials that all come from the inspiration of the team behind The Red Apron Butcher. I really liked the small atmosphere with the neon bar lit up in the backdrop, reminded me almost of a speakeasy, however, I can see the place getting packed quickly due to this for happy hour. What did they have to offer? Charcuterie: Extensive meat selection with all the fixins to come along with them. There were a lot of experimental meats ranging from bright, herbal, spicy, smoky, spiced, creamy, and earthy. I honestly forgot which we ordered since we just asked the waiter to pick ones he liked but they were all very tasty! Small plates: What a neat selection this place had to offer for small plates, which is what we dined on mostly, but what stood out to me were the... -Pig Wings: Looked like chicken wings but were tiny spare ribs in a hot sauce and side of bleu cheese. -Pork Roasted marrow: Came with fried shishito peppers, a side salad, and crostini. -Beef Fat fries: Garlic confit, rosemary, ranch aioli....need I say more? I can eat these all day! I also heard the pork meatballs were good, but we opted out, however, I will take their word for it. Dinner entrees: There were various types of meat entrees that looked tasty (pork schnitzel, pork belly) but I opted for the smokehouse burger which was a pulled pork burger with smoked BBQ aioli, cabbage slaw, and american cheese. I inhaled it! Even though it was not the type of burger I normally get, I was hungry and wanting to try something new and I am glad I did! The beer menu was....overwhelming, I am all for an extensive drink list like World of Beer, but this was overkill and I ended up just ordering some house wine. The cocktail list was a little more reasonable and although I did not order one, I looked at other diner's drinks and they looked as intricate as they did tasty. B Side is a nice addition to the Mosaic district and would be the perfect place for date night or some after work drinks/small plates...just make sure to get there early! read more

B side is a cute addition to the mosaic district! I drove by this place so many times but I am glad that I stopped by! I gotta say I do not have anything to complain about this place! The decor is mad cute and comfortable which is a good place to go with friends or on a date! From the decor to the service to the food and wine everything was on point! It was our first time here and the server did an awesome job explaining the menu to us! They have a super extensive drink menu which I like because me and my boyfriend are huge wine and beer person! THE FOOD: - Beef fat fries: OMG HEAVEN! the sauce that came out with it was super good - Pork schnitzel with arugula: SOO GOOD. the pork was so good it was cooked very well and tender. The arugula gave it a good touch! It had a pinch of cheese on top and i loved it! - Gouda Cheese with assorted meats: it went very well with our wine! They give you some flatbread on the side which gave it a good touch! With the meat they give you spicy mustard. With the chesse they give you sweet raisins which gave it an awesome touch! B Side is offically a favorite of my fiance and I with an enormous selection of alcoholic beverages to choose from. Even though the food menu is small, everything we had was delicious and all of the other items on the menu looked good. B Side is connected to Red Apron, right next to Mom's Organic. It's a very small and cozy restaurant with a bar area and a couple of tables on the other side. Its not too loud, the ambiance was very laid back with dimly lit lighting. The wait is quite long especially on weekend nights but luckily there are tons of stores around so you can walk around while you wait. The great part is that the hostess will order your drinks if you want one, two, or three while you wait. Nicholas greeted us immediately as we were sitting down and he was very nice. The menu has a couple of small plates to share and big plates if your really hungry. Some small plates include steak tartare, meatballs, pork rinds, fries, brussel sprouts. They also have a charcuterie menu which is about $4-$6 for meat and cheeses. We decided to start off with the charcuterie with some salami, pepperoni, sausage and my favorite one...the bacon pate. I could of had a whole bowl of that pate, it was that good. The bread that comes with it is soft and warm. Definitely worth it! We then ordered 2 pupusas and the talked about beef fat fries. The pupusas were filled with pork belly and crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. It was americanized but I thought it waz really good. And of course the beef fat fries were insanely good, it was perfectly crunchy and the dipping sauce was good but you can eat the fries by itself. My fiance ordered the ranch pork rinds which I was not a fan of, only because I don't really like them in general. My fiance said they were delicious though. Next time I am looking forward to trying the chicken which is half baked and half fried. There were people around us who ordered it and it looked very good. Nicholas took good care of us that night and made sure we were happy. The customer service and hospitality made this place a super duper plus in my book. We were hesitant to start our weekend at B Side because we knew from Yelp research that everything is a la carte and not cheap. $25+ for a burger, fries, and a beer for one??? For that price, we could roll through a drive-thru and get twice the food and still have enough left over for a 6-pack of a nice IPA. Lucky for us, we've lived in NoVa so long that being ripped off barely even hurts anymore. We were already at the Mosaic and decided to give B Side a try despite ourselves, and it turned out to be the right choice. We slid in right at the end of happy hour (4-6 PM) so for $5 each we got the gnarly cocktail of the day (orange liquor, lime, and some kind of Tobasco). It tasted exactly like you'd expect from that ingredient list, so we really can only blame ourselves for not going with one of the $4 beers offered. My boyfriend choked down half of his before ordering a (full-price) draft beer (Evolution Lot #6, which was delicious). It was all uphill from there. We got the half "rotissifried" chicken, a smokehouse burger, and fried Brussels sprouts. This place is all about the meat--that's probably already obvious since it's attached to a butcher, but it's worth keeping in mind when checking out the menu, as there are a lot of disparate options. Their chicken is far from the most interesting or flavorful dish I've ever had, but it was cooked really well and butchered and presented beautifully. The skin was crisp and there was plenty of meat even though it was a fairly small bird. The sprouts were even better. I LOVE fried Brussels sprouts and often see them served with bacon and / or a glaze, like B Side does. But they found a way to make theirs special with thick cubes of high-quality bacon and a garnish of apples with a red wine glaze. I would eat a piece of cardboard topped with that apple glaze. It's delicious. And then the burger. I thought I knew the boundaries of love until witnessing my boyfriend's reaction to his first bite. He was sold. Enchanted. He did a little dance in his seat. I'm pretty sure he forgot who I was for a few minutes. I understood where he was coming from after sneaking in a mouthful...again, it's all about the meat. The smokehouse burger has both pulled pork and a beef patty, so it's very heavy and meaty. It's the only BBQ burger I've ever had that wasn't sickly sweet and didn't fall apart. The meats were so tender that they practically melted and the beef and pork came together in a sweet, rich, mega-meat explosion in our mouths. It's the carnivore's dream sandwich. So, OK. Sometimes you get what you pay for. B Side has certainly made customers out of us. The portions are also quite generous...I was fully prepared to have paid $7 for a sad handful of Brussels sprouts, but they actually come in a little skillet that's big enough for two to share as a side. The burger was also large (I believe it's a 6 oz beef patty). I do wish they would cut us a deal and set up some burger + fries combos, but with such quality food we'll be back regardless. read more

B Side is a small add on to the Red Apron Butcher Shop. The dining area consists of a long bar and perhaps 10 tables, so it can get very tight. I was there on a random Monday night at the place was close to capacity. The look is very modern, as they are only open for diner, the lights are dim and the mood lends itself to intimacy. Staff was friendly, I sat at the bar and the bartender was knowledgeable and friendly. He had a great insight on the beer and other specialty cocktails offered. He was also all over the food specials for the evening. When it comes to food, as it attached to a butcher, I had to go with a meat product and as I am a sucker for a burger I went with this. Apparently on Monday nights they have a weekly burger special, from what I understand it changes from week to week. This week was a burger with fried egg and truffle sauce, The truffle sauce added a unique kick, a nice balance to the saltiness of the egg and burger. The patty itself was cooked well but was a bit overly greasy. I get burgers as greasy but it shouldn't look like a coated my hands in Vaseline when I'm finished. I also had the beef fat fries, nicely cooked, seasoned well and great quality. While I enjoyed the atmosphere and the burger, I wasn't blown away overall. The good: the food was amazing. We ordered quite a bit to share and everything was very, very good. Brussel Sprouts, smoked pimento cheese, beef fat fries...all great. The not-so-good: Food served in very small portions. The waitress mentioned it was all family size portions, so we didn't order much, but that was definitely not the case. Not a huge deal, just something to keep in mind for next time. We came after dinner for drinks and a few snacks - beef fat fries and confit tomatoes were delicious. After a couple years, I finally decided to come back and give this place another shot. Unfortunately, the food is still overpriced and mediocre. The menu items sound delectable, but were either very small portioned for the price point or overcooked. The seasoning and flavor of the food was decent, so the potential is there. The pork belly was dry and the burgers were extra well done, so if you prefer your burgers medium like me, stay away from ordering them. My buddies recently came back from their deployments and the beer selection is great, so honestly, our group was still willing to stay, spend a pretty penny, and drop a large tip. The problem is we barely saw our server and our beer took forever to come out when we were finally able to place our orders. We could've read War and Peace in the time it took us to get another round. I think we managed to get 3 beers a person in the 4.5 hrs we were there and the place wasn't exactly busy. I'd give this place a 1 Star, but I'll add an extra one for the solid beer selection. read more

We've been coming to B-Side for many years and have always loved it so it saddens me to leave this review. Tonight we had a horrible experience and we will never come back. We waited for an hour and a half for a table which was fine since it was crowded. We were assured by the hostess that the next table would be ours. When the table was available a group of four men came in and sat themselves at the table we were told would be set up for us. The manager saw this and let them take our place and didn't even try to stop them. The hostess told the manager that we were next. We confronted the manager and she told us there was "some confusion" but it was very clear that the group just walked into the restaurant sat themselves and the manager was either too timid or apathetic to stand up to them. They were there for 5 minutes without being on the wait list and we had been waiting for an hour and a half. The hostess had assured us that would be our table and she was trying to do her job. The manager then offered to seat us in the deli by the kitchen! Why didn't she seat the other party in the deli??? Clearly unprofessional. What a shame-we loved your cocktails and food! You could have handled it so much better than a "oops got confused". There a far more respectful places in this town with good food. Very disappointed. read more

Not sure if they got a new chef or maybe it was the brunch menu, but regular Staples like the red apron burger was tiny, fries served in baskets that used to be in cast iron skillet, and steak and eggs was massively under salted. The staff was amazing and super accommodating. They know thier stuff! The music has stayed great but the food...sadly is not the reason to go here (the cocktails, whiskey, and beer selection is!). Meat lover? Beer lover? Then this is the place for you. The schnitzel was the best I have had outside of Austria. It was served with the obligatory lemon wedges and a flavorful garlic-laden arugula. (Surprisingly, the garlic did not overwhelm.) I also had a side of spaetzle with sauerkraut and bacon -- served in a small iron skillet. While the meal no doubt called for a beer or white wine, I opted for a malbec which is my current favorite. The domestic wines were limited and IMO overpriced. The malbec was one of the lower-priced wines and I found it quite decent. DH chose one of the specials: hamburger with sliced beef and marinated vegetables in the center of the burger. Didn't I say this was a place for meat lovers? For the most part it was a dish that worked ... except for the piece of marinated carrot which was too hard. DH also ordered a side of fries which, like the spaetzle, was served in a small iron skillet, The fries came with a side of flavored aoli. DH is not a fan of mayonnaise on burgers or fries so only had one taste. B Side has a very extensive beer list. Personally, I found it overwhelming but I am not too adventurous when it comes to beer. While waiting for our table, I wandered through the adjoining Red Apron butcher shop and spotted a 4-pack of Arrogant Bastard ale on display in the front window. I reported that back to DH who is a big fan of Arrogant Bastard. We mentioned the AB to our waiter who said that if it was in the store, they would serve it. He graciously retrieved a 4-pack and chilled a bottle for DH. The bottle was already a bit cold as it had been close to the window. Did I mention the cold? One downside of our visit was a chilly 20-minute wait for our table. The entry way is very small and any time the door opened, we felt the chill of the night air. Another downside is the cramped seating ... tables are small which means some juggling of plates, glasses, and flatware. But overall it was a good meal and a nice find. As out-of-towners, we will have few occasions for repeat business. But we will certainly recommend B Side to our DC area friends. read more

It was literally just A-OK. My husband got a gift card to NFG, so we thought we'd go to an NFG restaurant close to us for convenience (would've loved to have tried Columbia Firehouse though!). We ordered two drinks, two burgers, and beef fat fries to share. My husband was not at all impressed with his veggie burger. It sounded tastier on the menu, but he said there were not enough flavors and too much bread. I originally ordered the Red Apron burger, but I received the Monday burger special instead. The waiter apologized and even showed me proof that the mistake was on the kitchen staff and not him, and was nice enough to say he can return it and get me my original order. However, I didn't want to wait any longer so I thought I'd try it. The difference in the burgers was in the cheese and greens. The burger definitely had good beef flavor, not surprising since it is from a sustainable grass-fed meat farm. However, the Thousand Island-esque sauce was overpowering. The beef fat fries win for texture, but lose in temperature and flavor. It was served to us almost room temperature/cool, and you didn't really taste potatoes at all. The texture was perfect though and how I would envision the perfect fry. Perhaps this is an NFG issue, but when we handed in our gift card with the check, it took at least 15 minutes to process (?!). Have they never processed a gift card before? The waiter kept coming over to tell us it was only a few more minutes and that the manager had to process it or look for the code? I don't know what was going on, but we were definitely getting impatient. I might go for a drink at the bar as they did seem to have an interesting list of cocktails, but that's about it. Also, we had to move over a few tables because we literally had the AC blowing in our faces. Not sure why the AC was on when the temperature was in the 40s outside. read more

Went for drinks and to just have some small plates before watching a movie. Food was OK, drinks were good, but the vibe was perfect for hanging for a short time. It's a small place with just a handful of tables & the bar, so expect a wait if you're going on a weekend night. Ordered the Chickpea Fries and the Hashbrowns with egg. The fries were not very good... the texture is chalky and it's like eating some sort of paste. Had to pour a ton of hotsauce over it to get it down. The chickpea flavor itself was ok, but I would stay away from this one. The Hashbrowns dish was delicious. They come out a little blackened/with a nice crust, sitting on this awesome smoky bacon ranch sauce and topped with a perfectly cooked sunny-side up egg. This, I definitely recommend ordering if you're looking at it. They have a bunch of other great food options which we'll be back to try. Drinks-wise, we got a "Love Street" and a "B Side Wins Again". If you're a fan of an old fashioned or just whiskey-drinks in general, give the "B Side Wins Again" a try cause it's pretty solid. The "Love Street" was also good and the peppery basil flavor with the gin was pretty unique & tasty. They also have a great selection of beer and prices are all reasonable. Only other thing (to echo a reviewer below), they have the AC on blast and you can really feel it on the booth side if your table's under a vent. My girlfriend felt really cold about 15 minutes in to sitting there, so we actually switched spots. If you're someone that gets cold easily, try not to sit close to one of the vents and request another table or be prepared with a jacket! read more

I legit have been waiting for that drink since last March and it was so close but the shaking of the tins and the freshness of it was missing. I hope once they settle a bit it will be back to the normal and will 100 percent get my 5 stars read more

After I was curious about this place and browsed through the menu, I decided to try it out. Very small, cozy bar with cool animals art on the wall. I ordered butcher's cut but our waitresses warned me that it will a very small 4oz sirloin. When my steak arrived. Wow, I couldn't believe my eyes. It was very tiny. This sirloin was indeed delicious and perfectly cooked. Red wine sauce and herb butter accompany well with sirloin. I also got beef fat fries. Because it looks delicious and appetizing. As much as I wanted to enjoy the fries. It was very salty... due to clumsy amount of salt. What a shame. Seems like everything gone wrong that day. I finished the meal within 10 minutes. This place definitely more suitable for drinks and nibble. If you are starving, be prepare to spend a lot of money in order to get full. Food was good, but that's about it. Everything here is a la carte. Plus, you still pay the same price as normal full meal to get a small amount of food which is quite brutal. read more

I'll start to say that I've come here in the past several times at the food has always been good. However, I visited on a Tuesday in April and I left disappointed and not impressed. I don't know what happened but I hope that this was just an off day for this place. The cocktails were made well and tasty. Overall service was average, the barback seemed most interested in checking up on us. The three other employees seemed vaguely interested. We started with an order of pimento cheese and the half smoke. In the past they served a hot, freshly baked flatbread with the board. This visit, we were served cold faux grilled bread that looked like it came out of a lunchable. The main course, we ordered two burgers and the beef fat fries. So I see a previous reviewer with fries served crispy in a mini cast iron pan. That is how I remember them with whole garlic and thyme. This trip, they were served vertical in a tin cup, soggy, and lukewarm. I also ordered the pig ribs to go, which they wouldn't do but they would bring me a to go box so I can package them myself. Honestly, irritates me when you restaurants make up stupid rules that come across as lazy than preserving food integrity. Addition to the cold bread and fries, even the ribs were cold...luckily they were to go and I was in a hurry to get my friend to the airport. I wanted to submit two separate reviews, for all times past I'd give this place a solid four stars. However, if this last trip is indicative of the direction their headed then 2-stars might be generous, it really was a 1-star visit. Used to me go to spot but over the months the service has gone WAY downhill. For example, I popped in tonight to grab a bite, have an overpriced, but awesome local beer to be greeted by flustered staff. No less than 5 bartenders running around confused, the main bartender performing bar back duties while asking about orders from across the bar. Meanwhile, every patron at the bar was in need of a beverage. I decided to head elsewhere, didn't want to overwhelm them. Maybe just an off night but seems to more off than on these days. read more

When I think of a B side, I generally think of offbeat, quirky, subtle. And obviously about music. Quirky not quite. And there was no attempt to embrace music in a big way. BUT there are lots of touches with the decor and menu that were thoughtful and unique. Even the doors to the shared back space with Red Apron had character. There were tons of charcuterie options. We went with the coppa, which was just okay. Frankly the "bread" it came with was "A for effort" but awful. It was too airy, had a weird outside texture, and it tasted vaguely like Brazilian cheese bread - but only vaguely. However, the brussel sprouts!! They're made like a lot of nice restaurants now (caramelized, with bacon, slightly sour, slightly sweet). But B Side executes them really well and adds a hint of spice to boot. We just did a couple small plates, so I should say that the folks around us were really pleased with the dishes they got. I only had good things to say about this place, until I spent Saturday evening with friends at the bar and ended up with a rude bartender, 10+ people put on one bill, and paying over $140 myself (for 3 drinks and charcuterie) just to be able to leave. My husband and I have always had great table service, and the food is excellent, but the bar is another story. I came with a group of about 8-10 people, hoping to get a table, but also knowing that they don't take reservations. I called ahead to let them know regardless, understanding that we might be up for an extra long wait, but was told that if we arrived by 6:00pm that they could accomodate those of us eating dinner at their largest table - which seats 8. Well, we ended up waiting over 3 hours before we finally got a table, and at that point we were leaving and gave up our seats. Not anyone's fault, although it was a disappointment to the few of us who arrived at 5:45 hoping for a quick dinner before moving to the bar. We stood in the bar area the entire time, and when I ordered the first couple of drinks, the bartender rudely said "I can't hear you - SPEAK UP." I get it, it's a loud bar, you can't hear me, but man... I really felt talked down to. I decided to ignore it, placed my order, and saw that he didn't ask for my card. I thought to myself, he must be busy, I don't want to piss him off again, and I know what I ordered so we'll work it out. It turns out that he didn't ask anyone in our group for their card, and put everyone on a single tab, which was a total mess to work out after some people had already come and gone, or paid part of the bill already. After running my card for $63 to cover the drinks and food I personally got, I still left a 20% tip because I've worked in food service before and understand that some people have bad days. But then, the group was still struggling to figure out the bill, and some of the items I had just paid for were still on the tab... At this point I am frustrated and just want to leave, so I throw in another $60 cash just to settle it and get our group out. Even after all of that, writing down how much to charge per card, and itemizing the whole tab for the bartender, my friend's card was almost charged for another $130, and another friend's card was only charged for $6. Long story short, don't come here with more than 1-4 people. Close your tab after you order your drinks, or ask them to run a separate tab for you. Or better yet - skip the bar altogether. This was the most hellish, expensive night out when we just wanted a simple, intimate celebration for my husband's birthday. Great place - but it only took one person to ruin it. read more

This is a meat-lovin', fried-food fan's dream (anddddd a vegetarian's nightmare). If you want to splurge and eat some unhealthy food, that's good for your soul - check out B Side. If there's one thing I hate, it's soggy chicken skin. B Side solved that problem brilliantly with their "roastifried" chicken. It is exactly what a roasted chicken should be, complete with crispy skin and super juicy on the inside. Love their charcuterie - there are so many options! The goat gouda is SERIOUSLY good-ah. Their prosciutto is salty and delicious - true to form. The bread they give you is a little strange, but just go with it. My only complaint is that there are hardly any veggies and no salads on the menu. I get it, it's a butchery, but when you're eating so unhealthily, it's really nice to have a salad or some greens to make you feel better about yourself. I mean, they have fried cauliflower and collard greens cooked with a ham hock but those don't really count. read more

Food was good(ish) but getting it was the problem. We waited quite a long time for our "second course" to come out - even another 15 minutes after the servr acknowledged we'd been waiting. The waitstaff seemed to be fighting with each other as well as overwhelmed just generally. I asked a basic question about a menu item and the server couldn't even manage even a few words to attempt to answer it nor did he offer to ask to get the information. And he clearly didn't listen when we actually ordered because we got two items we didn't request - it was such a hassle to get the food to begin with we just went with it and paid for them. The only thing I can think is that we were forgotten because we didn't order alcohol with our meal. At least one table sat down, ordered, ate, and left before we were finished. They had wine, we didn't. Unfortunately, when service is this bad I won't give a place a second shot. We've been to other Red Apron affiliated establishments and had great experiences so this was a disappointment. read more

Small, rustic, and warm, B Side located next to Red Apron, is a meaty addition to the Mosaic District. I think it is a 3 star restaurant based on food but their extensive drink list, friendly service, and ambiance bumps them to a 3.5 star. The place is very small and filled up quickly on a Monday evening. I didn't see a wait but the restaurant was two tables away from starting a waitlist. The menu is small plate focused with a huge drink menu. The drink menu has a generous amount of interesting mixed drinks, a decent wine list, and a long beer list that my beer friends approved. I think everyone will be able to find an adult bev to their liking! I tried a few small plates with my friends, none of which blew me away. I opted to go with some prosciutto and cheese. The prosciutto was really excellent, as it should be, since they are a meat place. I got a gouda which i found to be pretty boring and my friend's peccorino was also very blah. I did get to try to the beef fat fries with rosemary garnish which was really good!! My friends said the meatball was also really good but I passed on trying it since it was literally ONE meatball. I think this is a good option if you are looking for some charcuterie (skip the cheese) and drinks at the bar. The light eats and low lighting would make for a nice pre-dinner date spot. read more

TL;DR: 3.5 stars. 4 for good food but 3 for service (bar only). Limited seating and noise level is really loud. We called ahead to see what the wait time is as this is our first time trying out the restaurant. The person picking up the phone was honest about their limited seating and wouldn't really give us a wait time because it's hard to tell. We decided to give it a shot anyway after we got to Mosaic for there's many other restaurants in the area even if this doesn't work out. The wait time was around 20-30 mins when we arrived at around 8:30. Luckily 2 seats opened up at the bar and since it's full menu there, we decided to give it a try. Water and drinks menu were given right as we sat down but food menu was an afterthought. Had to wait a while to be served again. My beer came but wife's cocktail didn't. We waited and waited and waited more even after the small plates arrived and half eaten, but her drink was yet to be seen. At least 5 other people who ordered their drinks after us got their drinks already. It was not until I asked the bartender again that he answered he's making it right then... After we were done with our small plates, there was a lull. We waited for another 15-20 mins for our main dishes to arrive. Bartender had to go to the kitchen and get the dishes himself. Though the bartender did check on us once or twice during the meal, we were really not impressed by the restaurant at this point. Food overall was good but pricey for the quantity and quality. The pig wings was a disappointment. The Red Apron burger was cooked as ordered and the beef fat fries were tasty. The Rostissifried chicken was a little on the drier side but the flavor was good. Service definitely lacks, though, including communication between staff. This place is really noisy and hard to have a conversation even when we were sitting right next to each other. The Red Apron has open a resultant, next door call B-side. We Had to wait 45 minutes, they do not take reservations, but worth the wait. They have a stelar charcuterie selection of high quality meats, cheeses, & snacks. The Bologna Mac & Cheese has a slight kick of heat to it. The short ribs, was not impressive, but the steak was cooked to perfection. Their list of drinks is amazing and with a full bar, the mixologies has a great list of house drinks, worth a try! Delish! Gradually working my way through the menu. Favorite place in the Mosaic, with reliably good food. Their drool-inducing Beef Fat Fries with Garlic Confit, Rosemary, and Ranch Aioli are my favorite item. Crispy and flavorful- that's all I really ask for in most of my food and they never let me down. A close second is the Pork Meatball with Polenta and Grana Padano. Best meatball I've ever had. The N'duja Risotto Fritters aren't my thing, though could be yours if sweet and spicy sounds good. Burgers are solid, though I prefer the one I had to the Red Apron Butchery next door more. My fiancé and I popped in on a Wednesday night and was easily able to grab two stools at the bar. We weren't extremely hungry and was more in the mood to grab some drinks and nibble on some snacks. I like how you are able to pick your own choice of meats and cheese for charcuterie. Each selection comes varying with 1-4 pieces for $4-6 per selection. We tried: Charcuterie Selections Calabrian- 4 pieces, my fiance's favorite. Distinct flavor that set it apart from the others. To me, it wasn't spicy or hot but bright and acidic. Lebanon Bologna- 3 pieces, this was okay, tasted like fancy bologna Szechuan Peppercorn- 4 pieces, fatty with a hint of peppercorn taste Bourbon fig- 1 piece, enough for two to share, okay, not noteworthy Bacon Liverwurst- 2 pieces, good, smooth, pate like, not that smokey or bacon-y. Beef Fat Fries with garlic confit and rosemary- Another winner with my fiance. He loved these! I thought they were okay. I liked that they were super crispy and I enjoyed the roasted garlic and rosemary pieces but the beefy flavor was very faint. The sauce you dip them in was good though. Fried Brussels Sprouts with bacon, apple and red wine glaze- my favorite! These are so delicious. The flavors are well balanced and you get to hit all the notes your tastebuds crave. Savory, salty, smokey bacon, sweet from the apples and red wine glaze. The brussels were nice and tender but not overcooked and had nice crispy bits. They did come out cold though... Drinks: Renegade- my favorite red wine B Side Wins Again- nice and refreshing with grapefruit bitters and peel I think this place has the perfect vibes for friends or dates to come hang out and catch up over drinks and sharing snacks. Oh man. What did we get ourselves into? What an amazing dinner! Thanks to my VA friends for taking me here while I'm out on business travel. The highlight was the beef tongue cavatelli (beef tongue pastrami, house made cavatelli pasta cooked in ricotta cheese.) game over. Only 5 dishes made. It wasn't on the menu. Smokehouse Burger (Pulled pork, beef, pickled cabbage) flavor bomb, it was a shame it had to end. Random meat platter. (wild hog liver, prosciutto, "beef jerky", smoked beef heart, coppa). Cheese plate (smoke gouda, and really good blue cheese). The cocktail kicked my ass. "Don't Let Me Down" (forgot what was in it but I remember the strong flavors of lemon zest and nice pepper heat to finish it off), and garlic beef fat fries. It's unfortunate I don't remember their names. The bartender (chick) and the kid w/ the Australian accent. You guys rock. Seriously. That cavatelli dish should make into regular rotation. It's a crime you don't share that with the world. What an amazing flavor profile. The pastrami flavor cuts the cheese, the cheese is silky smooth, the paste was light and perfectly chewy. Not only do I have to travel far for this amazing place but to know I'll probably never get the Beef Tongue Cavatelli ever again. So so sad.. read more
