Well I've been driving past this easy to see bakery for a while and MAN does it pop out, with those bright pink colors. I could never tell what sort of bakery it was, I figured some kind of foofy girly place, with all that pink. But...it is .....Peruvian!? A Peruvian bakery on Broadway?? Wahoo!! What a refreshing change! I really just wanted to see what it was about, and had no expectations.(I mean, really, that's a lot of PINK) Let me tell you, I was FLOORED by their very striking wedding cakes. They are gorgeous! I can get a cake without the wedding, right? I tried two items: pineapple upside down cake and the dulce de leche napoleon. Pineapple upside cake was moist and not too sweet, just as it should be. I was thinking I would get a cupcake but HAD to try this when I saw it. We made this cake every year for my Dad, and you just don't see it much in bakeries. It was delicious. :) The dulce de leche napoleon I had to try just because it looked interesting. It's two puff pastry triangles filled with a dense rich dulce de leche filling. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, so I had to slice this in half to double my pleasure the next day. The filling was too sweet for me for one sitting but I KNOW most of my friends would be in heaven. The crispness of the pastry layers balanced the rich filling well. Quite tasty. I will say they had a bit of a service glitch when I was there. The POS system was down, and there were only two people at the counter. One was on the phone with tech support, and one was tied up with a lady who was placing a big order to go. BUT they did get someone out to help me. She had to use a calculator and I offered to pay cash to make it easier, so it all worked out ok. It just is no fun for anyone when technology fails; but you don't need that much tech to enjoy these wonderful baked goods! I'll certainly be returning. read more

I had a custom cake made for my daughter's first birthday here and it was amazing! I came here for her 2nd birthday to get a pre-made cake and Maria, who helped me was NOT helpful! I am so disappointed! I was trying to get a $25 6 inch round cake and she told me there was only the 2 that were in the case, one chocolate and one strawberry. The strawberry one was the perfect flavor but it had fancy frosting on top and I couldn't get writing on it because of the design. I ended up getting writing on the cardboard which was fine, but as soon as they took the cake back to the back to put the writing on another cake that was the same strawberry flavor was put in the case by another person working there. Then another customer came in lookin for a cake and that same lady actually looked back in the fridge for other cake options for her. I heard the options and they were just what I would have wanted! So I had to pay more for something I wasn't happy about because Maria told me I had no other options when there were other options. I am furious and won't be coming back here in the future. Gary, you were fabulous to work with for my daughter's first birthday and I have recommended your shop to many other Highland Mommies but Maria has ruined everything! Marjorie puts the faith back into fondant cakes! She is so talented and her cakes are always perfect and the talk of the event! Every time I have served one of her cakes for an event people rave about the cake. Her cakes are never dry or soggy! I love how her cakes are still frosted after removing fondant. Marjorie is a master of fondant and isn't afraid to expand on your creative ideas. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this bakery! I send anyone I know to her who is in need of a cake for a special event or occasion. Her Peruvian dessert trays are equally was decadent. Came by to order a last minute birthday cake. I called ahead to see if they had pre-made cakes for purchase at the last minute, and thankfully they had a variety of sizes and flavors. I opted for the yellow cake with Dulce de Leche. It was frosted with whipped frosting and they customized it with a greeting and sprinkles for me. The cake was delicious - the yellow cake was moist for the next few days as I finished it off and the dulce de leche was a wonderful surprise for guests. Everything about this place is beautiful. This was the first bakery to actually make me second guess having cupcakes at my wedding and going for a big 'ol cake. Their cakes are gorgeous AND delicious. Not too sweet, not dry and the perfect flavor combinations! My office hosted an "Around the World Cookie" event, and I decided to contribute a treat from South America with the shortbread and caramel alfajor. I talked with a few local bakeries, but Azucar had the best price. Not only was the price great, but the 400 cookies I ordered looked beautiful and tasted even better. The alfajores were the stars of the event, so soft, buttery and sweet. The people I worked with at Azucar, whether via email, on the phone or face-to-face were so pleasant and professional. YUMMY! My husband and I hired Azucar Bakery to make the cake for our June 25th, 2016 wedding. It was not only gorgeous to look at but it tasted AMAZING! I've heard from a few people that they had at least 3 pieces - needless to say we did not have any leftovers! The frosting was so light and delicious - it was a nice change from the normal heavy buttercreams and chewy fondants. They did a wonderful job decorating the cake as well! I can't wait to see pictures of it! We had a ton of fun at our tasting picking the flavors too! Wonderful customer service and such a cute little bakery. Our bottom layer was a white cake with a whipped frosting center and fresh sliced fruit, middle layer was a chocolate cake with raspberry filling, and the top layer was a lemon cake with raspberry filling. The customer service I received when picking up my custom order was incredibly disappointing. I would have rather waited for the cashier helping the couple in front of me in line. The front counter person making coffee came over and asked if I was picking up an order, to which I said yes and gave her my first name. She shakes her head at me and says "Alex who" in a very condescending tone. So I give her my last name. She comes back with the cake and puts it on the counter, not really saying anything, so my assumption was to look at it to be sure it's what was ordered. The cake was beautiful and really well done, I was happy with the out come. She just stands there in silence, not giving me any instructions or telling me what happens next. So I start to close the box for the cake and she tells me "no no no, you better let me do that because you're going to mess it up" again, in a tone as if to talk down to me. It really rubbed me the wrong way, it was highly disappointing because the cake was lovely. read more

Walking in and seeing a huge clean kitchen made me happy. Nice piece of mind. Not a crazy huge display of sweets, but that's not necessarily bad; this told me the things they did have were made with attention. Girlfriend got the carrot cake and I the chocolate mocha cake. Chocolate cake was rich, decadent, moist. Carrot cake was good; but my palette was covered with chocolate, so I couldn't exactly taste the carrot cake for what it was. Those shopping on South Broadway in the heart of carville face the unique challenge of having to ditch their car after having arrived at their destination. Once the car is parked, multiple shops and restaurants are within walking distance, making it in everyone's best interest to entice customers by providing easy parking. This is a very car-centric area, after all. Unfortunately, though, some businesses like Azucar Bakery take a territorial approach and require anyone who parks near their shop to 1. be a customer, and 2. stay on the premises. Sorry neighbors, but these customers are ours, and we will tow them if they check out your shop too! So that's annoying. Also, their coffee tastes the way stale cat urine smells, and their cakes look like they were made by a child in a factory somewhere in China. read more

We ordered a baby shower cake with fondant design that we paid a high amount for. The resulting cake that they delivered was very poorly done, shabby work and no attention to detail - nothing like their typical work since we have gotten cakes from them before. King Soopers would have probably done a much better job at a third the price. It was very embarrassing for us to show up with this cake at the party but there was no alternative as we got the cake the morning of the party. After we went back to tell them about this and showed them photos of the cake, they said that they would refund the price of the cake and would send us a check home. A few weeks have passed and we have received nothing. This was not about the money as much as showing up a friend's baby shower with a horrible looking cake. Safe to say we will not be ordering a cake from them again since they have let their quality slip.Its hard to build a reputation, but extremely easy to tear it down as in this case. read more

I just purchased a cake here today for a diabetic coworkers birthday and It was to die for! Everyone at work devoured it up! This bakery offers normal, diabetic and gluten free cakes and the taste remains excellent no matter what type you choose. Today we had the strawberry with whipped strawberry icing. I have also had the chocolate with pineapple icing and it was equally as yummy and ridiculously moist. They also do an amazing job at decorating and are extremely affordable. We ordered a Strawberry cake with Strawberry cream filling for my birthday as I love love love strawberry cake and not a lot of bakeries actually make a real strawberry cake. However, the cake we got really lacked that strawberry flavor. Don't get me wrong, it was a very good cake of course, but it just wasn't "strawberry" enough for me. It was more like a vanilla cake. In fact, when I tasted it I asked, "did they make a mistake and give us a vanilla cake instead?" I was just a little disappointed. But hey, I'm an adult so I just rolled with it. We bought the traditional Peruvian cake (Tres Leche) for a birthday. 2 of us loved it (very moist and not too sweet...just the right amount of sweetness) and the other 2 thought it was just okay (texture was more of a sponge cake and not very satisfying )....I think it just depends upon one's preference. My daughters tried the red velvet cupcakes and they both loved them (they said the cake and cream cheese icing were delicious). We plan to try again for another birthday but this time we will try either the strawberries and cream or the mocha cake. The young girl at the counter so obviously did not want us in there. Visited this bakery because we saw it walking by and saw the sign saying it was one of the best bakeries in the area. The atmosphere was very welcoming and the bright colors made it fun! The display case was full of delicious looking treats. It was so hard to pick just one, because they all looked so good!!! I decided to get the red velvet mini cake. I pass by this place frequently and always wanted to give it a try. I really wanted to love this place as the decor was on point, but unfortunately the food was not. I tried four items. The pecan cookie, the chocolate eclair, the cake pop, and the carrot cake. Of these items, the cookie was the best. However, for $2.50 I expected more. It was nothing more then an over-sized Mexican wedding cookie. The cake pop was mediocre, but I did like the outer shell. The eclair was very stale and had a "gummy" filling. The carrot cake was dry and tasted like it was a week old. I would have given this place a single star, but the decor and service moved it up one notch. This is a difficult review to write, because I think that there may be a little bit of a disconnect between their wedding and party cakes, and their regular retail. I had a friend give me a gift certificate so that I could try Azucar. I was excited about that, as I had been reading some reviews and had been checking out their website. First off, Azucar is easy to find and has plenty of parking. The shop is small, and the pre-made selections are not too numerous. They were sampling their dulce de leche napoleon, and it was quite good. I needed a cake for the Beautiful Ms. D's birthday, and they only had two on offer. The gentleman who was working, told me that both would be $25 and then explained what they were. I selected the flan cake, which was a layer of dense chocolate cake, a layer of flan, and a layer of dulce de leche with some icing embellishments along the edges. They were able to write Happy Birthday on the top. When he rang it up, he told me that it was $35. I pointed out that he had told me that it was $25 just moments before. He said that he had made a mistake, and that it was $35, since it was their flan cake. I told him that I was not pleased about that mistake, and he immediately said that he would sell it for $25. Service and communications could have been better. The cake itself was very good. It was not exceptional or excellent, but very good. Then again, I like the cakes from Whole Foods, too, and those tend to be less than $25 or $35. The cake was moist and dense, the flan was wonderful and also dense and the dulce de leche was delicious. While waiting for the cake to get boxed, my son and I looked at their books of wedding and event cake photos. I can see why Azucar is so popular for their larger-scale projects. I am just not sure about making this a regular stop on my dessert rotation. I am not sure that they are as into the retail trade. read more

I used Azucar Bakery for the cake for my sister's baby shower this past weekend. I already had an idea of what kind of decorations I wanted on the cake, and Azucar replicated them exactly. The cake was as expected, and ready on time. It was also absolutely delicious, and the shower guests raved about it all afternoon. I chose the poppy seed cake with whip cream filling, and the bakery dyed the cake light blue to go with the shower theme. It looked great, and the frosting was soooo good! Not too sweet, and nice and light. I will definitely use Azucar again in the future, and recommend their services for any special occasion! read more
