Sheet Cake review I ordered a sheet cake for a Cub Scouts event. I did an internet search of sheet cakes in the Denver area to compare price. . . this event was not a big budget wedding. . . I expected I would be buying from a grocery store, but was happy to find out that Azucar's sheet cake prices are reasonable. Also, the online ordering process is very streamlined and easy. You can choose all sorts of options for your sheet cake. I decided upon dulce de leche with sprinkles and a message on top of the cake. The cake was exceptionally good. Also, it was not too sweet. The week following the Cub Scout event I had a cupcake with similar frosting from another local bakery and was struck by how too sweet the cupcake and its frosting was compared to the Azucar cake and its frosting. I am already looking forward to next year's Cub Scouts cake, and am considering trying a different cake flavor, although it may be too hard to tear myself away from the dulce de leche. If you are ordering a sheet cake for any kind of event, consider Azucar. read more

A year late, but we hired Azucar to make a birthday cake for us last year for my fiancee's kids. Their birthday's are in late November and mid-December, and, though we requested a birthday cake, it had holly leaves and green and red presents on it. That's OK though....the cake was still very tasty and they were very friendly. Within all of us is a little fat kid just waiting to get out. And as I walked through the door and spied the display case, that kid let out an audible, literal, squeal of delight. I then warned the baker that I was likely to make myself sick as I ordered a dulce de leche Napoleon, coconut flan AND some mini alfajor cookies. They were mine, all mine! I ordered a special lemon cake with lemon curd filling for my moms 80th bday. It was supposed to have peach colored roses with green writing. I got there to pick it up and the roses were bright orange and. The writing was also bright orange. After arguing with me and being extremely rude to me about the difference between orange and peach- I insisted they scape the cake and decorate it like I had wanted it. I waited about an hour to get this done. The cake was just OK looking. I thought I'd get a cake that looked like a professional with artistic talent decorated it. I could have bought a prettier looking cake at King Soopers. Then they did not have a big enough box to out my 1/4 sheet cake in. I got a box that wouldn't close because the cake was too big for it. The decorator was irritated and rude when I requested some Saran Wrap to cover the top of the cake. I got the Saran Wrap and just wanted to leave. I thought "oh well the cake doesn't look very pretty but it'll taste great! We'll much to my dismay and the dismay of all of the party guests including my 80 year old mom- the lemon cake was very dry and there was so little lemon curd filling that we all thought they forgot to put it in between the layers. I did find a tiny thin area on l'art of the cake that looked like maybe there was curd in it. Finally, I had ordered buttercream frosting on the cake, and the frosting we got was more like whipped cream. It was definitely not buttercream. Totally flavorless frosting. I paid $100 for this cake and simply couldn't have been anymore disappointed with the cake itself or the terrible customer service I received. I will never buy another cake from this bakery and I'll make sure none of my friends do either. I hope that nobody reading this buys a cake at this bakery. Who knows what you'll get and how you'll be treated. My mom only turned 80 once and I wanted her to have a very special cake. These people ruined it. Avoid this bakery!!! read more

I've been eyeing Azucar for some time, especially around my wedding planning time, when I saw it was voted with top ratings for wedding cakes! I didn't go down the traditional wedding cake route, but finally was able to check out Azucar recently. The alfajores (sp?) are amazing. The end. That is pretty much all I need to say. :) The other desserts we tried were great as well, but nothing topped the alfajores. The service was great and they were helpful! The apple pie we got - we asked for it to be warmed up, but after two times, it still was pretty cool/not warm, but it was fine. read more

This bakery on S. Broadway is not only adorable but delicious. They have a great assortment of Peruvian sweets as well are more traditional options like cheesecake and carrott cake. You can also order custome cakes from them. The alfajores are delicious and always fresh, they seem to be a best seller. Bonus: They usually have alfajores de manjar blanco (or dulce de leche) to sample if you are afraid of commiting to a Peruvian "cookie" before ever trying one. Absolutely SO disappointed in the customer service of this bakery. I reached out on March 21st to order a cake and cake pops for my son's birthday party (3 weeks ahead of time) and was told by the shop we were all set on the Monday before the party. We were emailing back and forth to finalize the details of the smash cake, but when I called 3 days before the party I am now told that my order is NOT in fact set to go and they turned away my business. Holy cow! We were leaving hill bro boots and needed a snack. Across the street we spotted the very pink building with the all important "coffee" and "pastries" sign. This place is amazing! We (my pastry chef friend and I) sampled some of the sweets (dulce de leche napoleon was Out Of This World) and the savory empanadas (the chard was the best of the ones we had) with coffee and we were doing the happy food dance. They did such a great job on my gender reveal cake. It looked exactly like the photo I provided and they did an extra twist on the inside to reveal that it was a girl. Everyone love the flavor! Azucar... The name just rolls off your tongue. This place is quite scrumptious. I saw this place on my way back from the bank and it was my medical assistant's bday so I stopped to get her some sweets. They have a bunch of individual cakes and desserts so it was perfect. I went with the strawberry cake. The cake looked beautiful and it turned out being a very moist sugary confection. I also got alfajores. Very appealing to the eyes and tastes buds. That strawberry cake tho- super moist and the frosting wasn't overbearing. Ordered some coffee from this place and it took about 15 min total process from start to finish for the girl to make it- wth?? The food is great but customer service is lacking. read more

We had a low-key reception to celebrate our wedding and the two tier cake from Azucar was definitely the star of the event. It was absolutely beautiful. Even the location coordinator told me it was the most beautiful cake she had ever seen. We were thrilled with it and our guests were amazed at its simple elegance, as well as that of the cupcakes. Of course, the true success of a cake, in my opinion, is how it tastes. The two tiers had difference fillings: one was chocolate hazelnut and the other was dulce de leche. Both were delicious. I was excited to visit, after seeing reviews. It was my first time in. The $6 small chocolate mousse cake was very good, but not excellent. Pricey. The cashier on Sat afternoon was dismissive. I felt put on the spot to make a quick selection, as if she was in a hurry. As opposed to her asking if I had any questions, or being welcoming, or any sort of pleasant customer service. If the cake was a touch better or if the employee was at all friendly, I would make a point to go back in future. Now, not so much. In my mind, bakeries should be happy places. And in general, just a little bit of customer service can go a long way. But that is not what I received. read more

I'm really surprised by my experience here. I read the reviews and came down for a late afternoon coffee/ pastry. Some students were running the front end of the store, and I had to repeat my order 3-4 times before it was fully put in. The coffee I ordered wasn't the coffee I asked for, and the pastry was stale. Really moist cake but not a ton of flavor. We chose a cake out of their case and took the guava flavored one. It didn't have a strong guava flavor but it had a good texture and not dry at all. They're frosted with whipped cream which I am not a fan of but would be good for those that don't like a buttercream or looking for something less sweet. Where should I start. I am a big Yelper. I travel the world. So I found this bakery shop ofcourse on Yelp. I believe reviews so I follow with that also since I don't live in Denver Yelp is my choice. I was planning my sister baby shower and I called this place a month a head the guy I talk to he said its is too early to call and place the order and he advised me to call 7 to 10 days before the event then I called 10 days before my event. They told me to send the cake picture I want and the flavor they will send me quote. I did I spoke to marcella that is her name she said she will respond me back with in 5 days also she told me I have to provide her the toys. Hello I don't live in Denver. At this point I have 4 days left for my event and she was extremely rude and unwelcome. She kept saying she is not sure if the cake will be ready for my event. She is very unprofessional and mean. I asked her if I can speak to the owner she said the owner will tell me the same thing and she is not going to let me speak to her. I told her I called you and trying to do business with them based on there review and told her I will definitely write my review. She told me she have to go and hung up the phone. 2 hour later the owner called me. It's too late crystal. I found this wonderful bakery place " French sugar bakery thank you for my yelp family the owner and everyone are there helpful. I ordered a Tres Leches cake for a birthday. It was the best Tres Leches cake I have ever had. It was moist, but not soggy. The frost was just sweet enough. And the real star was the fruit filling! Hands down my favorite bakery in Denver, and today they saved me! I submitted an online order for a cake for my boss. When I got to the store today, I realized I'd accidentally set the pick up date for two days from now... totally user error! So this was one of the bakeries that was in the running to do my wedding cake since its ratings are so high. As a sort of trial run, I ordered a birthday cake for my horse from them! I know, I know, I'm ridiculous... Anyway, my horse's cake was good, but not great. I was warned that the carrot cake did not come with cream cheese frosting, but whatever frosting was used instead was just "fine." I'd describe it as your basic sugary sticky frosting that you can get anywhere, like the grocery store. The lettering and little design was cute, but certainly not overly creative. I feel like I could have gotten a comparable cake at Costco. Additionally, I have to admit that I was turned off by the fact that they charge for a wedding cake tasting. Other very high end bakeries do not do this, and offer even more flavors to sample. For these reasons, I selected another vendor to make my cake for my big day. read more
