My sister used Azucar for her wedding. I know that I was not the purchaser, however, I was with her when the tasting was done and helped make the decision. I feel there was a difference in quality from the cake we sampled and what was provided for her wedding. It's a shame really, because what was sampled was truly amazing, however what was delivered was too dry. The two top tiers were a delightful red velvet, this one was the best of the two, the filling was good, but it was a touch too dry. The second flavor, Marble, was so horribly dry, the filling did nothing to help it. In addition the filling was supposed to be "Boston cream pie" flavored and you could not differentiate it from the icing. The cake was beautifully decorated, just how it was planned, the water fall glowing and romantic, however, the top tier was leaning forward. Maybe I'm just a perfectionist, but to me it was noticeable. It stayed up yes, and the cake cutting was done without an issue, but it's scary to see a cake leaning forward. My sister was pleased, but she was in such a blissful mood that night, so I will give 3 stars. Still OK, but I did hope for more from Azucar, especially after such a yummy teaser. read more

You know how you live somewhere, take everything for granted and just don't put a lot of effort into exploring your city? Then you move to some crappy city, come back for a visit and find all these fantastic places? And find out said places were there when you lived there?! I could have kicked myself in the backside for missing Azucar Bakery when I lived in Denver. Luckily, my mom discovered this cute little cake shop and bakery and took me there the day before I returned to the crappy city. Besides beautiful, artistically done cakes, they offer cake slices and other pastries, including Peruvian specialties. My mom picked up a few items to graze on and I got myself an iced americano and a slice of pumpkin cake with dolce de leche filling. While I would never call myself a cake aficionado, I'm particular about my cake. I don't like heavy and I definitely don't like overly sugary frostings. That being said, I was very pleased withy my piece o' cake! The cake was soft and had an excellent crumb. The filling and frosting weren't overly sweet. Instead, they both were somewhat light and didn't overwhelm the flavor of the cake. Overall, it was a great piece of cake and I didn't feel my teeth aching as a ate it. Next time I come through Denver (soon, I promise), I plan on stopping by and trying some of their other pastries. I have a feeling they'll be as good, if not better, than my slice of cake. read more

Sheet Cake review I ordered a sheet cake for a Cub Scouts event. I did an internet search of sheet cakes in the Denver area to compare price. . . this event was not a big budget wedding. . . I expected I would be buying from a grocery store, but was happy to find out that Azucar's sheet cake prices are reasonable. Also, the online ordering process is very streamlined and easy. You can choose all sorts of options for your sheet cake. I decided upon dulce de leche with sprinkles and a message on top of the cake. The cake was exceptionally good. Also, it was not too sweet. The week following the Cub Scout event I had a cupcake with similar frosting from another local bakery and was struck by how too sweet the cupcake and its frosting was compared to the Azucar cake and its frosting. I am already looking forward to next year's Cub Scouts cake, and am considering trying a different cake flavor, although it may be too hard to tear myself away from the dulce de leche. If you are ordering a sheet cake for any kind of event, consider Azucar. read more

I was excited to visit, after seeing reviews. It was my first time in. The $6 small chocolate mousse cake was very good, but not excellent. Pricey. The cashier on Sat afternoon was dismissive. I felt put on the spot to make a quick selection, as if she was in a hurry. As opposed to her asking if I had any questions, or being welcoming, or any sort of pleasant customer service. If the cake was a touch better or if the employee was at all friendly, I would make a point to go back in future. Now, not so much. In my mind, bakeries should be happy places. A year late, but we hired Azucar to make a birthday cake for us last year for my fiancee's kids. Their birthday's are in late November and mid-December, and, though we requested a birthday cake, it had holly leaves and green and red presents on it. Within all of us is a little fat kid just waiting to get out. And as I walked through the door and spied the display case, that kid let out an audible, literal, squeal of delight. I then warned the baker that I was likely to make myself sick as I ordered a dulce de leche Napoleon, coconut flan AND some mini alfajor cookies. They were mine, all mine! Some students were running the front end of the store, and I had to repeat my order 3-4 times before it was fully put in. The coffee I ordered wasn't the coffee I asked for, and the pastry was stale. You can also order custome cakes from them. The alfajores are delicious and always fresh, they seem to be a best seller. Bonus: They usually have alfajores de manjar blanco (or dulce de leche) to sample if you are afraid of commiting to a Peruvian "cookie" before ever trying one. Really moist cake but not a ton of flavor. We chose a cake out of their case and took the guava flavored one. It didn't have a strong guava flavor but it had a good texture and not dry at all. They're frosted with whipped cream which I am not a fan of but would be good for those that don't like a buttercream or looking for something less sweet. Where should I start. I am a big Yelper. I travel the world. So I found this bakery shop ofcourse on Yelp. I believe reviews so I follow with that also since I don't live in Denver Yelp is my choice. I was planning my sister baby shower and I called this place a month a head the guy I talk to he said its is too early to call and place the order and he advised me to call 7 to 10 days before the event then I called 10 days before my event. They told me to send the cake picture I want and the flavor they will send me quote. I did I spoke to marcella that is her name she said she will respond me back with in 5 days also she told me I have to provide her the toys. Hello I don't live in Denver. At this point I have 4 days left for my event and she was extremely rude and unwelcome. She kept saying she is not sure if the cake will be ready for my event. She is very unprofessional and mean. I asked her if I can speak to the owner she said the owner will tell me the same thing and she is not going to let me speak to her. I ordered a Tres Leches cake for a birthday. It was the best Tres Leches cake I have ever had. It was moist, but not soggy. The frost was just sweet enough. And the real star was the fruit filling! Holy cow! We were leaving hill bro boots and needed a snack. Across the street we spotted the very pink building with the all important "coffee" and "pastries" sign. This place is amazing! We (my pastry chef friend and I) sampled some of the sweets (dulce de leche napoleon was Out Of This World) and the savory empanadas (the chard was the best of the ones we had) with coffee and we were doing the happy food dance. So this was one of the bakeries that was in the running to do my wedding cake since its ratings are so high. As a sort of trial run, I ordered a birthday cake for my horse from them! I know, I know, I'm ridiculous... Anyway, my horse's cake was good, but not great. I was warned that the carrot cake did not come with cream cheese frosting, but whatever frosting was used instead was just "fine." I'd describe it as your basic sugary sticky frosting that you can get anywhere, like the grocery store. The lettering and little design was cute, but certainly not overly creative. I feel like I could have gotten a comparable cake at Costco. Additionally, I have to admit that I was turned off by the fact that they charge for a wedding cake tasting. Other very high end bakeries do not do this, and offer even more flavors to sample. For these reasons, I selected another vendor to make my cake for my big day. read more

I saw this place on my way back from the bank and it was my medical assistant's bday so I stopped to get her some sweets. They have a bunch of individual cakes and desserts so it was perfect. I went with the strawberry cake. The cake looked beautiful and it turned out being a very moist sugary confection. I also got alfajores. Very appealing to the eyes and tastes buds. That strawberry cake tho- super moist and the frosting wasn't overbearing. Ordered some coffee from this place and it took about 15 min total process from start to finish for the girl to make it- wth?? The food is great but customer service is lacking. read more

We had a low-key reception to celebrate our wedding and the two tier cake from Azucar was definitely the star of the event. It was absolutely beautiful. Even the location coordinator told me it was the most beautiful cake she had ever seen. We were thrilled with it and our guests were amazed at its simple elegance, as well as that of the cupcakes. Of course, the true success of a cake, in my opinion, is how it tastes. The two tiers had difference fillings: one was chocolate hazelnut and the other was dulce de leche. Both were delicious. The customer service I received when picking up my custom order was incredibly disappointing. I would have rather waited for the cashier helping the couple in front of me in line. The front counter person making coffee came over and asked if I was picking up an order, to which I said yes and gave her my first name. She shakes her head at me and says "Alex who" in a very condescending tone. So I give her my last name. She comes back with the cake and puts it on the counter, not really saying anything, so my assumption was to look at it to be sure it's what was ordered. The cake was beautiful and really well done, I was happy with the out come. She just stands there in silence, not giving me any instructions or telling me what happens next. So I start to close the box for the cake and she tells me "no no no, you better let me do that because you're going to mess it up" again, in a tone as if to talk down to me. It really rubbed me the wrong way, it was highly disappointing because the cake was lovely. read more

I had a custom cake made for my daughter's first birthday here and it was amazing! I came here for her 2nd birthday to get a pre-made cake and Maria, who helped me was NOT helpful! I am so disappointed! I was trying to get a $25 6 inch round cake and she told me there was only the 2 that were in the case, one chocolate and one strawberry. The strawberry one was the perfect flavor but it had fancy frosting on top and I couldn't get writing on it because of the design. I ended up getting writing on the cardboard which was fine, but as soon as they took the cake back to the back to put the writing on another cake that was the same strawberry flavor was put in the case by another person working there. Then another customer came in lookin for a cake and that same lady actually looked back in the fridge for other cake options for her. I heard the options and they were just what I would have wanted! So I had to pay more for something I wasn't happy about because Maria told me I had no other options when there were other options. I am furious and won't be coming back here in the future. Gary, you were fabulous to work with for my daughter's first birthday and I have recommended your shop to many other Highland Mommies but Maria has ruined everything!
