We went there for lunch today and the waiters were very helpful and friendly. We had a nice tasty lunch. I have a problem with one hostess, I had to deal with at the front, as I walked in. When we sat down, I asked the waiter for her name and he said he didn't know and would get back to me, but never did. Firstly, I am wandering why a female with a heavy accent who doesn't speak and understand English would be working at the front desk. She couldn't understand what I asked her, and then she was very rude to me with her reply. I read another review that stated the hostess was callous, so obviously other patrons are having this experience too. Avra, you need to do better. There are too many good restaurants out there, for patrons to dine here, and then have to deal with a rude hostess. I believe that a good hostess should possess a friendly disposition, and have the ability to make guests feel important, and comfortable. This hostess did neither. She is not personable, she is not friendly, not well spoken, her listening skills need improvement and she is unable to connect with people. I hope the manager and HR sees this review. read more

Came here for a girls night out and overall had a really good experience. The decor is beautiful and the lighting creates the perfect ambiance. One thing we all appreciated was that the music wasn't too loud, so we could actually enjoy conversation without shouting over each other. Service was a bit slow at times. Our appetizers came out in about 20 minutes, but there was a noticeable wait for the entrees. It felt like other tables were being seated, served, and leaving while we were still waiting. That said, we stayed patient and the crab cakes and Mediterranean salad were delicious and held us over. Once the entrees arrived, everything was well worth it. The ability for LA restaurants to truly wow me is about as rare as a Hollywood reboot that's actually better than the original. Then I got invited to a birthday dinner at Avra last week... and apparently, every once in a while, the reboot does outperform the original. At one point I literally heard myself say, "How did I miss this place after all these years?" I've lived in LA long enough to be a little jaded about new restaurant hype, but this one genuinely surprised me. The appetizers were phenomenal. First, the calamari. The secret to great calamari is delicacy- too much batter, too much salt, or a few extra seconds in the fryer and it turns into something you'd expect from a mall food court. Avra absolutely nailed it. Perfectly light, crisp, and tender. Our table of eight ended up ordering ten plates. The Avra chips were another standout. I've had plenty of zucchini chips before, but this version also included eggplant chips (which I normally detest). Somehow, the combination worked beautifully. The presentation was gorgeous and the flavor even better. Normally I'm polite when sharing appetizers... but that night I turned into a full-blown table barbarian (think Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones.... barbaric, but handsome... like me). They were that good. Then came the octopus, which honestly set a new personal standard for me. The thin slices had the perfect texture and flavor. If someone asked me what my last meal might be, Greek cuisine might now be the answer. The appetizers were so good they almost overshadowed the mains... mostly because we ate so much of them that we were already full by the time the entrees arrived. I went with the Dover sole, one of my personal favorites whenever I see it on a menu. It's a great test of a kitchen's restraint because the dish depends on subtlety and balance. Avra absolutely nailed the delicacy of the flavors. Easily one of the better versions I've had. Needless to say, I'll definitely be back, and next time I'm bringing the family. What a vibe. We went to this place for lunch, and they had a special three-course fixed-price menu for about $40. Not sure if that's a constant thing or just for Dine LA week. I like how when we sat down, they brought us a bunch of appetizers, including crudités, a plate of hummus, and some bread. I also noticed they have their own branded olive oil on the table. We noticed people ordering this appetizer that looked like a stack of fried eggplant, which looked delicious, but we figured with the three-course meal, we wouldn't have room (which was correct). I got the Greek salad, which was extremely fresh and delicious, still wondering how they got such flavorful tomatoes in winter. My entrée was the salmon, which was really good. We had to get the dessert packaged to go since we were so full from the first two courses. This seems like a good place to go to grab lunch if you are in the area. I felt the service was very gracious, and they checked on us a lot. The regular menu seems a little pricey - though I think part of what you are paying for is the ambiance. This place has a kind of fancy and trendy aura, and I was pretty sure some of those famous "Housewives" or wannabe Housewives were at the table nearby. After four years of coming to Avra, it is still my absolute favorite place to eat and drink in the area. We usually sit at the bar, even though the dining room is beautiful, because the bartenders are so amazing... professional, witty, hyper efficient, fun to talk to, and just plain nice people. Special kudos to Munir, who always greets us by name, makes time to chat, and remembers my very complicated cocktail. I highly recommend the scallops which are perfectly seared and come on a bed of sauté'd spinach, and the salmon with capers and grilled vegetables. The portions are perfect and quality is top notch. The ambience was chic and classy with a Mediterranean vibe. It does kind of feel like the restaurants on the Greek islands except more high-end and without the ocean view. Food was overall delicious and flavorful. Every seafood dish we had was very fresh and excellent quality. We ordered grilled calamari and grilled octopus for starters and they were amazing. For entrees, we had Chilean sea bass. The fish was very tender and soft. What I didn't like was that there was too much tomato sauce drenched all over the fish. It would've been better to just add a little sauce on the bottom so that it doesn't overpower and mask the sea bass, which was supposed to be the highlight of this dish. Also, there were only two small pieces of potatoes underneath the fish. Cocktail drinks were refreshing and tasty. And the chocolate cake we had for dessert was decadent but really sweet and had more buttercream than actual cake. Service was outstanding. The entire staff was very attentive, friendly and quick. Waited for about 30 minutes on a Sunday night for a party of two. Ambience was gorgeous with fish stands should you opt to purchase a fish to be cooked. We ordered the salmon tartare ($37), tuna ($59), and asparagus ($18) to share. Food did take awhile to come out (around 30 minutes between each entree) and we noticed other tables waiting as well. I have eaten at Avra a couple of times now and I can only say it is a super solid place to eat. For Mediterranean seafood it's on par with the best you can get in LA. The vibe of the restaurant screams family scene which is always cool. I have yet been fortunate enough to sit inside the restaurant and both times have been seated on their outside ish patio area but nonetheless it has not presented any problems and once it was even raining. Having the option to go over to the ice tank and hear about all of the seafood specials and see them and pick your specific piece is always fun. If you choose not to go with one of those selections you can always order from the menu, which I have done as well. Their scallops are a hit! We shared the Avra salad as well as calamari (which you have the option to have grilled or fried, although given how much this family loves fried food, we opted for the latter). They provided complementary pita bread and hummus, and they have their own olive oil at the table, which was fun to try. I had the scallops for my entree; it's on the smaller side but it came with plenty of spinach and sauce. My cousin's fish was huge; you can opt to pick your own fish based on what you're feeling and there's a selection available on display at the back of the restaurant. My mom's clam linguini was the best in my opinion; I would recommend that. We split the baklava for dessert at the end and it was just the right amount of sweet. The second appetizer was the OCTOPUS for $43, it's a grilled octopus , not chewy, it's very soft to eat and was a big portion too. My drink was good, very light in Alcohol. For our main entrees my husband got the LINGUINI and CLAMS, it's Aldente, but way too citrusy. My son's HAWAIIAN BIG EYE TUNA was tender and just okay. My ROASTED ORGANIC CHICKEN is the most simple one and ended up being the most delicious one, super tender, juicy, and very tasty. But omg for me our dessert is the Best Chocolate cake I've had, their 16 LAYER CHOCOLATE CAKE is amazing here, so rich in chocolate, they use high quality chocolate on this one, it's really good, it's a must get for dessert, and it's not even overly sweet. I made a reservation via Resy for Saturday 12:30. I parked across the street and I was early and my friends were a bit late but the hosts were nice and accommodating, when I arrived there were still a lot of booths and better tables available but by the time all 3 of us are ready there were only a few tables left. We were initially going to be seated outside at the far end and we requested another table inside and this time we were seated by the seafood selection which we didn't mind. As soon as you're seated they approach you with waters and ask you for your drinks. I was early so I already ordered from the bar (Santorini martini) which was refreshing and on a sweeter side. They also give you some toasted pita with hummus and there's olive oil for the table. They have a regular menu and a set menu. We chose the set menu as it comes with starters, main and dessert. I had the salmon tartare - loved it and it is a small serving but it was just right to set you up for the next course. It had a good tangy citrus flavor and the fish was fresh. For my main I got the grilled whole fish and for this day it was dorado. If you want grilled fish this is what you should order. It came with I believe steamed bokchoy and this whole dish was hearty. I felt really full after the main course. My other friend had the chefs choice which was branzino, loved the seasoning on it and it was also very filling according to her. My other friend wasn't into fish so she had the chicken frites. We all wanted the pistachio baklava so we didn't get to try the other desserts. It was too sweet for my taste. I'm glad it was a small portion - didn't get to finish it, wish I got the cheesecake instead. Would definitely come back here - especially if you like fish and seafood. This place is fun. Soaring ceilings, expansive space, beautiful decor, artfully displayed fresh fish on ice and stacks of fresh vegetables. Clientele is well heeled and the place was buzzing, with every table full by 9 pm. Service is extremely attentive and impeccable with water glasses constantly being refilled, fresh cutlery, crumbs swept away from the tablecloth between courses. Food was good: we had the hamachi, the Avra chips (thinly sliced deep fried eggplant), the grilled octopus, the swordfish, the Chilean seabass plaki, Greek salad and truffle fries. We finished with the 16 layer chocolate cake which beautifully decorated for our anniversary. Not my top rated dessert, for $22 it was just average. Given that it's in the heart of Beverly Hills, all this comes at a price, a rather hefty one. This is not a regular Greek taverna so please look at prices on the menu before booking or you might get sticker shock. You could definitely find more original fare at a fancy restaurant on Hydra, or Spetzes or Naxos or Athens rooftop for probably half the price, .... but prices in LA are just astronomical these days. Bill ended up being $120/head including drinks before tip. So for the location and service it is priced appropriately. You are paying more for the experience than the cuisine. Valet parking is expensive: $27 ($17 if you validate, but only for 2 hours) and for that I'd like my car washed... or at the very least for the valet to open the passenger door for the lady and not just for the driver so he can get a tip. But service was lovely (our server Jordan was excellent) and the place is really gorgeous. Would definitely recommend for a romantic date, celebration, engagement, or business dinner. read more

The crudo was perfectly thin & delicious with the yuzu but its such a delicate dish that the really spicy peppers killed the flavor of the fish. We both got the $40 course lunch (many options available), which included a Greek salad, fish of the day (dorado), and desserts, baklava and strawberry cheesecake. Service was great, and the restaurant feels bright and airy. When we arrived at 11:30, it was pretty empty, but it filled up quickly.
