How did you find out about that place? Why would you want to eat there?? It's just Indian food made up to look western. Us to ourselves: WTF????? A mystery. The challenge was on. "But it's your menu" I wanted to say but bit my tongue. Now, Ashok is an Extremely Charismatic Guy. I reckon he could talk a man lost in the Sahara out of drinking the water at an oasis. But I also got the impression from talking with him that he is an extremely kind and well meaning person, so of course he wouldn't do such a thing. In any case we took his advice and abandoned the menu. We chatted a bit and told him that three of us wanted vegetarian meals and two wanted meat. He said he would whip up something for each of us and we would end up swearing that it was the best meal ever or we would not have to pay. We ordered two lamb somethings and three veggie somethings. Tender and fresh cubes and medallions of lamb in a bed of veggies. The veggie dishes were bathed in curry and Indian spices and I thought they were a bit overpowering. Fresh and beautifully presented but I could not taste anything but spice. The meat dishes were definitely the way to go. Sorry for not being able to name the dishes, but these were custom creations by the chef and so I have no idea what they were called and if you let Ashok create something for you it will likely be from scratch and different from what we ate. The total bill for our adventure was around $100 including tax and tip for five people. He did not ask us if we thought it was our best meal ever or if he should comp us the meal. Just as well! I rate Avatar a 4.5 but let it show as 5 stars (take that, Visitor Center Lady). I would only go there if you are the adventurous sort, like us ;o) Those seeking a more cut and dry dining experience may be taken aback. The noise level inside the small dining area was also a negative. We could hardly hear each other from across the table. As a final note to our interesting Avatar adventure, Ashok told us his story. He began his Sausalito restaurant 25 years ago. Way back then he made his restaurant gluten free and strictly non-smoking; one of the very first restaurants to go this route. He said back then the customer reaction was very negative, and some customers would curse at him for telling them how to live their lives. Never order off the menu! Let the owner know what you're in the mood for and "wa-lah" some food master piece will land on your table that will perfectly satisfy your craving. After showing up too many times on Sunday when Avatars was closed I finally made it on a Saturday afternoon right when the restaurant opened for lunch. My expectations were met, our group of 5 sat down and the waiter came up to us right away promising us awesome dishes that we have never tasted before. I was happily surprised by the dishes we got - some Indian-Mex enchilada, a lamb dish wish rice, and spicy prawns. He started us off with 3 plates which we scarfed down happily and left us craving more so we ordered 2 more - another spiced meat dish and a wonderful cheese ravioli in curry sauce - SOOO GOOD. The Indian-Mex fusion food was awesome, the flavors were strong, vibrant, and the food was fresh. Overall, my favorite was the enchilladas and the ravioli. The owner then offered us a never before dessert (meaning if we didn't like it it would be complementary, and if we found another restaurant with this concoction it would be complementary) - still I haven't quite figured out what the heck the dessert was, all I know is that it was sweet, icy, chocolate crusted, and had pistachios on top. WTF...Indian and Mexican fusion??? Is that good or bad? I wasn't sure and had to check it out for myself. Wow - it was good! The owner was such a sweet man and you can tell in an instant that he is proud of his dishes. Their Veggie Samosas were the best I've ever had! I was a bit concerned because I'm not a fan of most things gluten free but to rank this as the best I've had was quite shocking, especially to myself. Baby Spinach and Jumbo Prawn was simply delicious. The flavor and the sauce was so light and enjoyable. Punjabi Enchilada with Chicken and Pumpkin (recommended by the owner) was unique and very good. We made the mistake of ordering it with a mild spice but I believe it would have been better with a medium spice (which we got on the side due to a friend not being able to handle the heat). Once we added the spice, it was very good. Basmati Trio with vegetable, chicken and lamb was just okay. I wasn't overly impressed with the dish. Overall my first experience with Indian/Mexican fusion was very good and I would love to go back when I'm back in town. read more

Need I say more - the restaurant has close to 500 reviews and it still has maintained a 4.5 star rating and I think that says it all :) And if you still have doubts , they are put to rest when you meet Ashok, the owner and the host. This is a real fusion restaurant - not one of those fakers that throw in some avocado and calling it Californian or Mexican. You will find Indian curried sauces atop pasta, jerk chicken alongside smoked eggplant, and ravioli flavoured with rose water. Being a lover of Indian, Jamaican and Mexican cuisines (and all things spicy), these sounded really good to me, plus it seemed like a huge local favourite, so we stopped by after a long day of event planning. I ordered some smoked eggplant enchiladas, which is served with plain rice. The plate is simple, which isn't a problem, but I could barely taste the smoked eggplant under the curried enchilada sauce. Perhaps I just picked the wrong filling? The curried sauce didn't have enough spices in it as well, which is a disappointment considering the cultures it came from. It was the same way for the ravioli - looks good on paper but a bit bland in reality. You gotta give it to them for trying though. The dessert saved the meal. A pistachio cheesecake with mango sauce - I think it was gluten free or vegan or something - that was flavourful and not too sickening sweet. In all, I'm not sure how to think about this restaurant. Food wasn't as good as the ratings suggested, maybe I ordered the wrong items? Also, service was extremely slow, and the restaurant was so packed the waitstaff kept hitting my chair trying to pass through. They tried to chat us up at the end because we were a bit impatient, but that came at the expense of other waiting customers which were getting antsy. Probably the best Indian meal I've had in America. Ashok, the owner is one nicest people and owners. He greeted us and accommodated us with all our needs. He basically asked us what we could eat, what we couldn't eat, what we liked, what we disliked. That's it. And in the next 10 minutes the food was served. 4 entrees for the 4 people. He told us to eat everything and at the end guess what the primary ingredients were in the dishes. My ignorant self and family didn't expect half the things he gave us, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, we didn't know what they were. Secondly, we wouldn't in a thousand years imagine that those ingredients could be found anywhere except India. He had somehow managed to specially source ingredients from India for his customers. The food was amazing!!! We basically ate everything and cleaned our plates. There was methi ravioli, a fresh vegetable stir fry, punjabi enchiladas, and authentic methi saag paneer with grilled vegetables. Rice was served and was just heavenly. We also drank some chaas, which hit the spot, it was perfectly spiced and refreshing. And the dessert. Oh that dessert, it was amazing. Just amazing. I can't describe it in words. Avatar's is hands-down one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. I love what I call "ethnically ambiguous" food and that is exactly what Avatar's is. We ate: curried sweet potato enchiladas, vegetable tostadas, seasonal vegetables fettucini, rose mango dreams raviolis, and the dessert. My favorite was the curried sweet potato enchiladas -- the sweet potatoes were very flavorful and the sauce on top was a spiced version of "sweet chutney" in Indian cooking -- although it's hard to compare, because everything was incredible. I highly recommend trying the dessert as well because it's very delicious and something you won't find anywhere else. While the entrees are on the slightly more expensive side, I don't mind paying a premium of a few dollars in order to get such delicious food. The owner is incredibly friendly and tailors dishes to the preferences and dietary restrictions of his customers. I can stress enough how much the owner makes the experience at the restaurant. This was, hands down, the best meal I had when I was visiting SF last May. My friends and I stopped by right when lunch was about over and the staff was just about to have their own lunch. Instead of shoo'ing us away, they greeted us with open arms and gave us their full attention. I appreciated the owner/waiter, who made a real effort to provide extraordinary service. Catching on that we were new to the restaurant, he offered to surprise us by choosing our entrees for us (not before he asked about our food allergies .. how considerate!). I was skeptical at first, but once our dishes arrived, I sure was glad I trusted my lunch in his hand. He had ordered for us the Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Crab enchilada, and a lamb with ravioli dish. Everything was so delicious, we ordered seconds of each dish (something I've never done before)! Our lunch cost a little over $20 each person (this includes the mango lassis we each got) but considering the amount of food we got, I think we got a good bang out of our buck. SIMPLY AMAZING. I was so so impressed- food quality, service, speed, value- top notch. It's Mexican-Indian fusion, but forget trying to pin down the label- the food speaks for itself. Unbelievably unique flavors- we started with mushrooms in what was like a tomato/curry spicy sauce. The sauce alone was so good we asked for naan to slop it up. I got the yoghurt mango marinated chicken and hubby got the Jamaican jerk chicken. Both were simply phenomenal. Quality meats, fresh and charred vegetables, perfectly cooked rice, and sauce to die for. The place just says "Avatar's Restaurant" so you don't know what you're getting into until you go inside. There is no indication that this is actually an Indian Mexican fusion restaurant tucked into what appears to be a former diner. Yep, Indian Mexican fusion. The server (also owner?) is extremely charismatic and friendly and upon seeing my twin 5-year-olds immediately begins telling me that they can make anything even if it's not on the menu, like pasta for example. He tells us this each time he comes to the table while we're still perusing the menu, like he's ready for a dare. He seems to really want us to ask so I inquire whether he has any Indian food that is kid-friendly. He asks for a protein (we get chicken and tofu) and he yells the order to the kitchen so they get to work. I ask for a veggie in there, too, so he yells to them to include broccoli. He seems very invested in whether or not the kids like their dish and tells us if they don't like it he'll make something else or not charge us, and jokes that if they lick the plate he'll charge double. It arrives with an Indian tomato-based sauce that's not spicy and is served over rice. My kids ended up liking it quite a bit - which was nice because the spiciness of most Indian food has made it something difficult for them to try. HOWEVER, we were charged $12 for their meal. I mean, yes, they liked it but I expected that we'd be charged the same price as the other kids' entrees on the menu which were $7-9. If I'd known I would have just ordered one of those. As it was their meal cost the same as the more expensive of our adult entrees. As for the adult food, the samosa was good and had a nice heat level. The smoked eggplant in the smoked eggplant tostada was my favorite part of my meal. I hoped that the paratha it was served on would be toasted to be crispy like a tostada but it wasn't. (Idea for owner: do that!) The chicken enchiladas with basmati rice were fine, but had the same sort of generic sauce as the tostada. Generic sauce was okay once but twice was a bit much. The dessert has the following inscrutable description on the menu: "There is only one dessert we carry here and we call it avatar's dream. Close your eyes and picture the sweetest concoction of dessert flavors from around the world coming full circle on one plate of bliss. Divine." Our server told us we MUST get it, but wouldn't reveal what was in it until it was time for dessert. So what was in the classified concoction? Almond gelato with a chocolate crust, a pistachio topping, and mango sauce. The almond gelato was too bland, and we were generally unimpressed. Not worth of being shrouded in mystery. read more

This place is absolutely amazing. The atmosphere, the service, AND most importantly, the food. The second you walk in, the smell of the food will capture you. It's a tiny place, and there was a wait, but the food is very worth it! It's a first come first serve type place, no sign in sheet. I ordered the rose mango dream, and I will HAVE to recommend it. I understand that raviolis is not Indian or Mexican BUT the way this place creates this dish will make you question it! My friend ordered the curry trio. This dish was delicious as well. I was able to try a piece of chicken, and the second that I took the bite, I could instantly taste the wonderful flavors. My friend said the rice, lamb, prawn, veggies (everything on his plate pretty much) was delicious. There's a choice of how spicy you want your food. If you're okay with the heat staying in your mouth, I'd say go with medium. Lastly, we couldn't pass up on the dessert. There is just one dessert dish, so you either want it or not. And if you don't, let me be the one to say, don't leave this place without trying it! We preferred not to dip the dessert in the sauce that it comes with. Pumpkin burrito is world class. A mainstay of Mill Valley. We've been big fans for years.

Its a great idea and great when done well but can be sloppy and very greasy. Long wait too like the food was frozen and had to thaw out?

This place is always amazing. Run by a lovey family. Whenever Sausalito gets a little chilly we hit this place up to warm our bellies!

Went here on a whim. My friend and I were planning on just getting a sandwich at the place next door, it ended up being closed. Good thing cause we found a gem. Avatar's was awesome it's like a mix of indian and mexican food. Great quality ingredients. Friendly service. Loved the naan style bread they gave us for a little side while we waited for our food. The daal soup was fab, and my chicken curry with rice was quite tasty. The lady service the meal could have been a little more friendly; but hey maybe she was having a bad day. I've stubbed my toe before and not been very happy :). Minus one star for the bathroom. They could definitely spruce it up. read more

What an inventive cuisine, a radical combination of Mexican constructs with South Asian spices. I was slightly skeptical about the over the top ratings but this place delivered, everything was quite good. As prompted by the reviews, I had the owner (who was quite friendly) pick my dish. He made a special set of buffalo and pumpkin curry enchiladas; tender ground buffalo meat seasoned with smoky curry spices and mashed pumpkin, and lathered in a dark brown curry enchilada sauce. Soaking up some of the accompanying saffron rice, it was an epic combination. We will definitely swing by again when in Sausalito. read more

I adore Avatar's. its as simple as that. I could care less about what other people say about this place ( i.e. stay away, blah, blah, blah), but it is seriously good food in my opinion. If that means I have bland taste buds, or no taste for food at all, then so be it (everyone has their own opinions). Avatar's is a small restaurant with a warm and friendly staff. Ashok always know when its my family we order take out. I've never had a bad meal from here and so far whatever i've ordered has ALWAYS been good. They might be on the pricey side, but it is well worth it. My family and I alway get the rock shrimp appetizer when we dine there. I usually get the the enchiladas, filled with whatever floats my boat at the moment, and they are super good. The dessert, is just nom nom nom, I always try to figure out what its made out of, but usually give up and just demolish it. If you're up for something new, i'd head over to Avatar's and get something tasty. I love how Juan (the bus boy turned server) still remembers when my lil sister was still a toddler and dragged her stuffed monkey around, and that was years ago.
