This was such a nice nail spot! My friend and I made an appointment, just to make sure we could sit together, for pedicures. We came in, were greeted warmly, and picked out our polish colors. We got the detox pedicures which included a scented soak and a calf and foot massage. We were even given bottles of water. The pedicures came out beautifully. This was the worse pedicure I ever had. The technician was not interested in doing a good job, just going through the motion. My daughter treated me to the pedicure, I don't remember the specific one but it had a special citrus treatment and massage. I was more focused on the callous removal part of the service which was horrible. As you may know, it's impossible to talk to some technicians about the service they are performing to let them know how you would prefer it or for them to do it better to your liking. This technician was of the school of thought that i'd never had a proper pedicure in my 66 years on this earth. My recommendation is find another salon, there are too many good ones in Durham where your money will be welcomed. The $70.00 my daughter spent on my service today could have been better spent at a salon who takes pride in their work instead of just trying to go through the motions and taking your money. I really don't like this place. I went to get my toes done with my friend. I had to wait a while as my friend was running late and so i had time to see some people come and go. Sanitation was my first concern. I didn't notice them cleaning out the soaking tubs at the ends of the chairs well. Also I didn't see them use any sterilized products they use on your feet. Not all places do but I feel hygiene is important. So strike one (and two)! Secondly I felt the technicians were so rude. Mine was complaining to her friend that my nails were too short and was very condescending. It was really annoying. I will say that the girls at Avalon did a good job of painting my nails. They look cute and have held up well. BUT, they have just about the worst customer service I've ever experienced in my life. EVER. I just moved to the area and was meeting up with a friend I hadn't seen in a long while to get manicures and catch up. I called ahead to say we'd be coming in and make sure they had time for us, and they said we didn't have to make an appointment. So I came in, waited for my friend to arrive, and then we were led to the stations. However, we were far across the room from one another, so my friend asked if we could sit together. Then all the employees started talking in another language to one another. My nail tech was laughing and talking to her nail tech who was scowling. Eventually we got to sit next to each other. Her nail tech was slamming stuff around and being really obviously mad about us wanting to sit next to each other. Both of the nail techs just kept talking to each other in another language and laughing or scowling. My friend apologized if we had inconvenienced them. Neither of them answered. My friend asked the employee if she'd had an ok day. "No, not ok," was the employee's reply. My friend said, "What happened?" No response. My friend again apologized. No answer. I tried to explain why we wanted to sit next to each other, and I apologized as well. No answer. These employees were speaking English to us plenty when we first arrived, so I know they understood us. My employee was pleasant enough, although I'm fairly sure she was making fun of us. All in all, it was a terribly unpleasant and awkward experience. It should not be a huge deal for 2 friends to sit next to each other. Even if it's inconvenient you can't just ignore them when they speak to you and treat them like total scum. It was pretty horrible. If you go, just bring a book, and go alone. The service itself looked great, but I would never go there with a friend ever again. read more

This is definitely a gem. I was visiting from out of town, and my stepmom and I decided to get pedis. I was having foot surgery a few days later, so I wanted my feet to look presentable. We walked in on a Monday afternoon and got right in. We picked out our polish and were seated side by side. These chairs are no joke - they are excellent massage givers. They don't stop unless you stop them either. Very relaxing. We were asked which pedis we wanted, and if we wanted waxing, but it wasn't pushy. I decided I wanted the spa pedi, which included more massage, a paraffin treatment and was just an upgrade. It was $40 (versus $28 for the regular) but I wanted to splurge. It was fabulous!!! My nail tech did an awesome job. My toenails look AWESOME. The paraffin and callus removal was great, and the massage was the best and longest I've ever had. My stepmom and I were able to talk and relax with no problem. The best part? I had my surgery a few days later, and the nurses commented on how cute my toes looked. Score! read more

What I like about Avalon is that you feel secure knowing that you are receiving the same great service, no matter which attendant works on your nails and feet. The place is operated like a production line, but in a positive way. They get you in; the same person does your feet and hands; the process is efficient, and you don't have to sit and wait forever for service. I really love the work Helen did on my feet. I walked in here with some friends from out of town, as we had "Getting Our Nails Did" on the list of things to do that day. The first thing I was surprised at? How large this place is. They've got one huge room that showcases several rows of nail stations, a line of pedicure stations on one side, AND a back room with several more pedicure stations. This also means that the place is quite busy, and has a large staff. I could see it getting to be kind of a zoo in there. The second thing I was surprised at, was that despite it looking like it was super busy, we got in within ten minutes and were promptly taken care of. All three of us, without a reservation? Nice. Its probably been about a month since (and therefore time to get another one).. and during that month, I've walked through a few airports, done an olympic distance triathlon (along with the training that goes with it), and stubbed my toe on a porch step - and I still have no chips in the polish. By reading through the reviews, it's clear this business doesn't want business from Black customers. First, I was charged more than I was quoted when I called. No problem, I just took it out of the tip which wasn't my normal 20%. Second, the SNS I got made my nails FAR weaker than they had ever been when I got this same service elsewhere, in the DC area. My nails looked great (though very flimsy/weak) for about a week when I had to get them redone. SNS normally lasts 3 weeks for me. The last two times i have been here, they charged me $15 more than what was listed on the menu fir the services I requested. The last time, i verified the price for what i was requesting- nothing fancy, but extra moisturizer (honey or something like that i think) for the feet, and the technician spoke with the manager to verify and confirmed price. When i complained that they still charged more ($95 total, for 40 min service, not gel, not french) , she said that the technician misunderstood and would have to pay out of her own pocket. WARNING: If you have chemical sensitivities or asthma DO NOT go to this salon. The air quality is horrible. It smells like they are using plug ins on top of the already existing nail chemicals. I had to leave after getting sick and they charged me 70% of my treatment and she only cut my nails, cuticles, and buffed. I needed to get out of there so I didn't have time to argue. I've been going to this salon for years and I am never disappointed. I have tried many salons in the area, and none compare. The staff is well-trained and provided the best results around. Rarely do my nails look perfect when leaving a salon, but they always look perfect when I finish at Avalon. The atmosphere is relaxing - no TVs, so I get a break from the world when I go here. Also, the staff is always kind and professional - it's the only salon where I don't feel like I'm being judged or talked about. I"ve been here several times and had good experiences, but my last one has been horrible. I brought my daughters with me for Mommy/Daughter mani/pedis before my wedding in early August. We got gel polish, since I needed it to last and for all 3 of us, it was a grand total of $250 with tip. We are talking a 13 year old and a 9 year old... My 13 year old got an infection in her big toe - a massive one. After a month of trying to get it to heal, she went on 10 days of Augmentin (along with a $190 doctor bill). After another month of it still not healing, we went to a podiatrist and had part of her nail removed PLUS another 10 days of Augmentin (and another $190 doctor bill). Now, in November, it is finally looking much better, but still healing. This was the most expensive mani/pedi ever and I can say with certainty that I will NEVER go back. read more
