I adore Avalon Nail Spa. They are a full-service salon, offering mani-pedis, waxes, facials, haircuts, and massages. It is a true Leisure World gem, tucked away by the Ledo's. What stands out about this salon is their push for the new "dip" system: essentially powdered polish that won't chip and strengthens your nail. I am just NOW seeing dip pop up around places - Avalon definitely adopted this first! You'll see in the number of dip colors they offer. I have done dip a couple of times, but still have a slight preference for gel manis. I returned and she refused to do my hair because I was African American and she said she needed a special tool to do it. My hair is relaxed and it does not need a special tool. I am an 85 year old woman who lives in Leisure World. I just had stem cell surgery to both knees. Although my driving right now is limited, I can drive to Avalon. The shop is bright, clean and inviting I have had wonderful reactions with staff in the past. However with the past two visits, I have experienced a nightmare with Tracy. . The first time she tried to talk me into getting a nail dip. I explained to her that my nailbeds were weak and my dermatologist would not allow that. I told her I just wanted a regular manicure. She told me that my doctor did not know what he was talking about. she continued to say over and over again that the dips are the best for your nails. At that time, I told her to stop the discussion. I did not want to argue with her about my doctors advice. She acted like she was more knowledgeably than my dermatologist. The second time I had an experience with Tracy' was concerning an appointment that I made by telephone. I called and someone answered the phone and said that I could get my brows done and a pedicure at 11:15. At that time it was 1045, so I waited around the house before I started out. When I got to the shop, I was told that II could not get the two services. Tracy was the one who took the appointment but evidently a walk-in came and she ditched me. So I was able to get my eyebrows done by Azi the hair stylist. She did a wonderful job. She did a wonderful job on my .There was no one to do my pedicure. Tracey told me to come back at 3 PM. Because she took the walk-in and probably had another appointment after that she ditched me. She wanted me to come back in the afternoon at 3 PM. I her that I was not even supposed to be driving yet. However, she told me she could not take me. And I just have a warning anyone visiting that shop and over the phone with , you might not be waited on when you get there. I was really trying to hold off writing this review, hoping that there would be a happy end to this story, but alas....Looks like I have the dissenting voice among my fellow Yelpers. After reading the fantastic reviews I decided to check this place out last week. I was especially excited because the salon is a very short distance from my home. My nail tech, Ron, was a very polite and enthusiastic guy from Cambodia. He was very meticulous and attentive to his work and before the polish was applied, my nails looked pretty good. Not the best, a little narrower than what I preferred, but still decent. After he polished them, however, I noticed that they were not evenly or consistently shaped (I wear stiletto nails, but since my fingers are stubby, I prefer more of the cat-claw look). Some nails were pointy, others more rounded, the edges of some were straight on one side and curved on the other. I also noticed that some of the nails were really thick while others were thinner. I'm SUPER picky about my nails, but I was willing to overlook it until my next fill-in and give Montessa, the American nail tech, a try on my next visit. I had been chatting with her while Ron was doing my nails and she seemed to have a better idea of what I was looking for in terms of nail shape and overall style. Two days after my fill-in, the gel polish on several of my nails started to peel off. Not chip... it lifted up in large chunks and was coming off of my nail. By the time I made it back to the salon on Monday, I had two nails that were completely bare. The owner allowed an obviously much less experienced nail tech (she asked the owner a million questions, and I could tell she was starting to lose her patience a bit) re-polish my nails, no problem. After another day or so, 4 of my nails started peeling. Adding insult to injury, one of the nails also broke. So here I am, one-week after the fill-in, pockets $38 lighter (including tip) and I have a mangled mess on my hands. My plan was to go back to the salon and have a chat with the owner, but I wanted to make sure I could select the person I wanted to re-do my nails. I called the salon and spoke to Montessa to see if she had appointments available. She told me that she would check and get right back to me. I've never heard back from her. I was willing to give this salon the benefit of the doubt: maybe it was a bad bottle of polish or maybe the young man just needed some more training. I was willing to try another nail tech and see if I could make this a great working relationship. But a lack of quality work, a lack of respect for a client's time and a lack of professionalism (i.e. not calling a client back) equals three strikes for me. If you don't want your nails looking a disheveled mess, avoid this place. read more

Came here two years ago and they cut my finger when trying to shape my nails. Came back today thinking it was probably a one time thing but they cut my friend's fingers twice. We both asked for dip powder manicures today and it's the worst manicure I've ever gotten. They ruined the shape of my nails and they're not even the same shape for all fingers. The powder was put on so thickly and it just looks like circular blobs on each finger. They never apologized and even blamed us for their terrible job. Avalon is a pleasant little gem tucked into the rear of Leisure World Plaza. My sister and I were looking for a place to get Christmas mani-pedis and this seemed like our best bet. The salon was clean and their prices were very reasonable. A fresh set of sanitized tools was used and my nail tech Montessa gave my hands and feet some serious TLC. I notice that the vast majority of the positive reviews are from years ago. As time goes on, they get worse and worse. Last night, I cancelled an appointment for today, via email. There was no access to any link to cancel an appointment, so I emailed. Today I get a text saying I was a no-show for today. I emailed again and it got bounced back. I called the salon, where they informed me that I was a no show and therefore couldn't send them an email. I have no interest in supporting a business that treats their customers rudely and punitively. read more

This morning, I went to the Avalon Spa in Leisure World for a manicure and pedicure. My technician was the only male on the staff. I think his name is Ron. It was the worst experience I ever had! Though I had made an appointment in advance, he was in a big hurry, and I felt rushed and uncomfortable. Because I had foil on my fingers, I asked him to help me pluck the polish for my pedicure from my purse, but he wasn't listening. He seemed so far away! So I did it myself and dropped the bottle. What a mess! He said his "boss" would be very upset (she wasn't there). I was so sorry. WARNING! When the "boss" came back, he was doing my pedicure, and she admonished him for putting his tools back in the tray and not washing them. He refuted that he always puts dirty tools in the sink, but she repeated what she said more than once. He rushed so much that he gave short shrift to any requests I made about how I wanted my nails shaped (they turned out uneven). I felt as if he really didn't want to do my nails and couldn't wait until he was finished. I may as well have been a mannequin and not a human being. As I was leaving, I realized why he was in such a hurry. He was doing the nails of an attractive young woman, all smiles and laughter and very attentive. Another technician had started on her nails, but as soon as he was finished with me, the other technician moved out of the chair, and he enthusiastically took over. I don't expect royal treatment, just some politeness, some kindness, and some patience, especially living in Leisure World. read more

I have been coming to Avalon for about the past 3 years. This salon is tucked away in the Leisure World shopping center, so if you've never been here before it might be hard to spot (it's in the nook next to Ledo's). All of the nail technicians are excellent and efficient at their job. Terry did my nails as well as my sister's for my wedding, and they came out better than I ever imagined! She recommended the dip powder, which I was skeptical of at first (no dryer needed?!). But once it was done it looked fabulous! I've gotten many pedicures here too... they have a variety of packages you can choose from. I recommend the milk and honey scrub... it costs a little more than a regular pedicure but it's totally worth it! read more

My fiancée and I walked in yesterday around 6:30 pm to get pedicures done. They were about to close but still got our pedicures done. The techs we had (Ron and another young lady) were very efficient and while the process was quick, the final product was great. The environment is very nice and tranquil. The equipment is well maintained, especially compared to other salons around the area. The entire salon is very clean. We met one of the owners (Mona), and she was very kind and welcoming. I've been a customer at Avalon for about a year and I wouldn't go anywhere else! I not only go there for my nails, but also brows (threading, waxing) and hair (cut, color, highlights). Emmy is exceptionally conscientious and attentive when doing my manicures and pedicures, but all the nail techs there are very skilled. Mona does a wonderful job threading my brows, getting the perfect arch, and others at Avalon have done just as well when waxing my brows. Ekta is a talented hair stylist and I am always very pleased with my cut and color. She is attentive to my concerns, addressing them to my satisfaction and offering suggestions. And the price is half of what I used to pay at other hair salons where I often got disappointing results. Everyone at Avalon is congenial and I am always greeted by name and with a smile when I walk through the door. The salon is clean, nicely decorated, well-stocked with gel and polish colors, utilizes quality hair and nail products, and offers the latest innovations and techniques at a fair price. My appointments are usually on time with only the rare exception. Despite walk-ins, the unscheduled add-on services of some clients, and the unreasonable demands of some others, the staff are always pleaant and try to keep to the appointment times without compromising the quality of their work. So, it is extremely upsetting to witness the rudeness they are subjected to by some customers who are unreasonable, complaing loudly, throwing hissyfits, and berating the nail tech if they have to wait a short while to be seen. Or they they demand that all their broken and chipped nails be re-done for free! (Do these people yell at their doctors when they must wait to be seen?! Do they return a set of glassware to the store and insist on a no-charge replacement set for a glass they've dropped on the floor and broken?!) These are the same people who speak very loudly on the phone the entire time they're at the salon, with no consideration for any other customers. Apparently, if they aren't happy, then NO ONE can have a relaxing and enjoyable spa experience. (Of note, on the very rare occasions I've noticed an issue with a nail on the same or following day that wasn't a result my scraping or banging it, I've called the salon and the problem was immediately addressed with profuse apologies and without charge. But if I damaged the nail, I've felt it was appropriate to schedule an appointment for repair and I fully expected to pay for the service.) In short: everyone at Avalon is professional and pleasant no matter what, even when they've had no break for hours due to high volume of customers or they've been subjected to rude treatment from a few unreasonable clients. read more

My friend and I decided to come give Avalon a second chance, despite the fact that my friend had been cut here 2 years ago, and this experience was far worse. Not only did the lady doing my nails cut me (twice), she also did not even apologize or show an ounce of guilt. The entire time she was doing my nails, she was yanking my hands. I asked her to make sure my old nailpolish was fully removed before she began doing my new color - and she rolled her eyes & snapped at me! She did a T E R R I B L E job. We asked for an SNS dip powder manicure - both manicures were done horribly. She filed each of my nails in different shapes and added way too many coats of powder-making my nails super thick. She also never asked me to wash my hands and just did a half-assed job. She left abruptly after telling me to pay. I told her colleague that my nails were bleeding and instead of apologizing she said "yeah that happens when customers move too much". Blaming your customer, really? I've gotten my nails done for 10+ years and "moved" involuntarily several times, but NEVER been cut. That was so rude and condescending! It was gravely dissappointing. The only positive thing I can say about Avalon is the people were friendly, hence the one star. Unfortunately, that was not enough to salvage the experience I had there. While the workers were very nice, this was literally the worst manicure experience I have ever had. I went to Avalon when my regular nail salon could not, unfortunately, take a last-minute walk-in for my gel manicure (which I have done many times, so I therefore know what to expect). Avalon had an appointment available, so I decided to give it a try. It was a mistake. For starters, it took almost TWO HOURS. While I love a relaxing spa experience as much as the next girl, there was really no reason for it to take as long as it did. This isn't because my hands were a complete train-wreck - in fact, all I needed to do was have my previous gel manicure removed (which does take a bit of time, as the gel needs to dissolve in acetone in order to take it off prior to applying the new color), have new polish applied, and my nails were in very good shape. Very straightforward, one would think. My manicurist spent about 45 minutes taking the gel off and clipping my cuticles. This is not normal. The clippers she used were clearly very dull, as she continued to hack away at my cuticles and took so much skin off that, a day later, my fingers are still sore. This is after the fact that I mentioned to her several times that it was starting to hurt, flinched a few times, mentioned I had to go pick up my kids soon, etc. I would have had her stop altogether and leave, but at that point, I was committed - I needed my nails done for an event later that evening. When it came time to apply the gel polish, I requested a specific, neutral color that I have worn for years. When she began to apply a color that was absolutely not the same color I have worn, she tried to talk me into it. I insisted in a change, and she brought over another one that had sparkles in it. Again, I insisted that she pick another. We finally agreed on a color (not the same one that I have used, but was neutral and I needed to get out of there) and she began to apply the clear base coat, which ran onto my relatively raw cuticles. I mentioned this to her (in that I would like it to be removed), and she assured me that it would come off later. She applied polish and I waited to see if things would work out. They didn't. I left with polish on the skin surrounding my nails, very red and raw cuticles that are going to take some time to repair, and a day later, my gel manicure that typically lasts me up to 2 weeks is peeling away (from the fact that it was on my skin). My cuticles have never look worse and my skin is peeling and flaky around the nail. I have two kids and am a people-pleaser. Thus, I typically don't have the time or emotional fortitude to write negative reviews. The fact that I have done so here should speak volumes. As I mentioned above, this is the WORST manicure I have ever gotten. I will never go back to this salon again, even though it is practically within walking distance of my home. Hopefully, the salon will see this and work to rectify the situation for future customers. I, however, will not be one of them. read more

I've been to this place since the first day that it open. At first the service was just ok assuming that it just opened and things weren't really set yet. Then when they accepted these 2 girls who spoke perfect English, I was amazed. Those girls gave me the best service ever from the moment I walked in to the moment I leave. Ever since my experience with them, I've always booked an appointment with Suzy. However, not to long ago I did a walk in thinking that she will be there because normally she's always there even on her days off. I was told that the sisters was on a vacation and insisted to give another person a try. As pleased as I was with Suzy I had high expectation but came to a conclusion of great disappointment. I have been going to Avalon for a little over two years now, and I love it. The salon is clean and relaxing, with soothing music playing in the background. I have only gotten one pedi there, but go every two to three weeks for a fill in on my acrylics. My nail tech, Terri is the best! I only let her work on my nails. However, if she is on vacation, I go to Emmy, who is also quite good. Terri always listens to my demands, as I am very particular about my nails, and she always gets them just right. This is the fifth time that I've been to Avalon Nail Spa. The first time I was there I didn't really appreciate the service, but I went back a second time hoping that it will be better. However, once again the lady who worked on me (different person) also gave me the same kind of service. I was cut on one toe and two fingers. I felt that it was all rush. I didn't feel I was really taken care of. From that day I declared Im never going to go to there anymore. But obviously I'm wrong. Lolz. I have a grandmother who lives in Leisure World and swore this place have the nicest people ever and the service was great. So of course she convinced me and for the third time I went with my Nana (grandmother) and had a mani/pedi done. This time I had a girl name Sarah and my Nana had I believe is her sister Suzy; they spoke perfect English and were super friendly. Sarah gave me one of the best hand and leg massage ever. As for my Nana, she told me that Suzy was very caring, gentle and patience with her. Like most nail salons I've been to, the employees wouldn't ask us if we were hurt or if they were doing things according to how we feel and like. But these girls did (which i now go to). With me, because my Nana is in Leisure World, it's convenient for us to come down and have a girls pampering day. I dislike trying new places out.
