The last 3 times I have gone to avalon, there is something wrong. The coffee was so burnt today. It's a terrible way ro have to start the day, and when I let the lady at the cash register know she didn't really care. So, I see why the ome crazy waitress was always so disgruntled. The only reason I went today was because my Dr office is right there. I won't make the mistake again. My parents have stopped going because they have been sick twice after dining there. I've been back many times since discovering it in 2014. Food is always great and portions are huge which makes it a good value. You can't beat the blue plate specials during the week and I love their blue cheese. More expensive than Ihop and Denny's but much much better fare. I come here all the time and the food is always incredible, along with most of the service. Today the service was inexcusably terrible and when I asked the young woman in the pink sweatshirt up front to have our waitress come out more than every 20 minutes she was incredibly rude. Hands down the best darn restaurant I've ever eaten at! Hands down no question about it!!! Fast service with a smile, super chill and relaxed, unbeatable prices on literally everything, and the food!!!! Oh my goodness the food is just spectacular!!! They have a chicken fried steak OMELETTE! And yes, you need to order that first thing. Get you a strawberry shake, as well. If you prefer, even the blackened catfish is the best thing ever. And don't stop there, come on you're on a roll then! To top it off you need to ask for a slice of their coconut cream pie to go. If you don't, you're just not doing it right. Service: JOYCE WAS OUR SERVER So this was my first time to this location, but I have to say it's been quite disappointing. From the time we walked in, found a table and ordered it was about 15 minutes. 1 minute finding a table and the other 14 minutes being overlooked and having to wait to order. When our order was finally taken, the waitress was less than pleasant. I understand that they were dealing with a lunch crowd. However, this should not mean that you are rude to your customers you're tending to. Needless to say, my iced tea I ordered got to my table 10 minutes after I ordered it. I have to add the table next to me(ordered 10 minutes after I did) got their drinks first. This iced tea was also the first and only tea I got. I tried asking for a refill, even after my tea sat empty I got Nothing... very disappointing. Food: The buffalo tenders I ordered were good. I enjoyed them very much although the fries that came with it were stale/extra crunchy. They were also warm at best too. My husband ordered the eggs Benedict. He didn't like them very much, nor did I. The ham was very thick and chewy. His hash browns were also burnt. All in all this place was a disappointing experience. do NOT place an order for pickup - my boyfriend and I had ordered food, and the person at the front told us to just go to the bar and they'd take care of us. We sat there for 15 minutes without being talked to, they acted like we were not even there. Then, my order was ready, but they hadn't even placed his (and he called and placed his before mine). We sat there for an additional 30 minutes waiting and an additional 10 minutes waiting on the cashier to get off of the phone to take our payment. By the time we got home, all of our food was cold and soggy. Never coming here again. Absolutely ridiculous. read more

Flys cooked in the food! This place isn't taking sanitary precautions. We get there, get our coffee, and then we hear our waitress deal with a complaint from the table behind us. She is a obnoxiously loud and completely disgusted with what's she's being told. She apologized and tells them "that's just disgusting". So we're sitting there, in shock by what we are hearing. So when she comes to take our order, we ask her about what happened, and she just says "no big deal" literally after she made a big deal. We were hoping for an honest answer being since we've worked in restaurants. She walks off annoyed that we asked but we ask her again and she doesn't answer. Was hoping to support and shout out to a local business during these COVID time, but sadly was a bit underwhelmed and disappointed with my experience. The eggs were fried nicely and the hash browns were good. However I was expecting the corned beef hash to actually be made with corned beef. It turned out to be a mushy, cold, inedible, smashed paste. It resembled something I might have given my dog and not at all corned beef. If you enjoy having a ROACH in your cornbread dressing this is the place to visit. In the end it was't the insect in my food that was an issue, it was the indifference the staff showed when I pointed out the problem. I had to tell the cashier to remove the charges for my ruined meal. The owner did contact me and offered his apologies and said he would make amends, however he exhibited the same indifference as his employees. He asked me to send an email to him describing the situation and that seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Too bad a negative star option is not available. read more

Today Monday, January 11, 2021 My wife called the Avalon Diner location at I0 and Kirkwood to place a curbside order. She was told that they no longer offer curbside. I mention the date due to the fact restaurants have been forced to cutback to 50% indoor dining because of surging Covid-19 cases. We then called the location at 10 and Campbell and asked if we could place a curbside order. We were told we could come in and pick it up to which my wife replied that was not what she asked. The person on the phone stated that someone could bring it out to us. So we proceeded to place the order. The person on the phone was very impolite bordering on rude and perturbed she has to deal with us. When we arrived and picked up the order they did bring it out to us but failed to say anything in response to our thank you. When we arrived home we discovered that the order was incorrect. To their credit they refunded the money when we called to complain. However, the whole experience was unpleasant from start to finish. I think Avalon should reconsider curbside service and train their people better. I suggest to anyone considering this place to pass until it improves. read more

Blueberry Pie is a hit or miss kinda thing it's either really good or just gross. This pie definitely was up there in great taste like to be honest with you the combination between the ice cream and the filling was so amazing! I got a nice coke with it and I was very pleased and happy with everything. Service is good here to! I will be returning soon. Btw burger is great to! read more

Literally everything we got excluding the kids p and j was frozen foods that had been defrosted and heated. This is a shame because they have a great location and nice staff. Avalon Diner serves up a pretty solid breakfast. This little place is on our breakfast restaurant rotation so we end up here every month or so. I've had the migas, huervos rancheros, eggs w/bacon, & their omelettes. All are pretty good but my favorite is the veggie omelette that is chock full of mushrooms, tomatoes, onion, bell pepper & the ooey-gooey goodness that is called Swiss cheese. The cooks are good at following specifics: like your hashbrowns crispy? You got it. Like your over easy egg w/a runny yolk? No problem! My last visit I noticed the menu cover had the following magical words: Burgers served all day. Oh my gosh, where have I been? Why didn't I notice this before? The Hamburglar has nothing on me, I would eat a burger three times a day if I could get away with it. So with a giddy gleam in my eye I ordered the burger with a side of fries (the burgers are a la carte) while H stared at me like I had two heads. Eh, he has weird breakfast rules.....and rules are made to be broken, pal! The burger was the typical diner burger. Good offering, not the best I've had and not the worst. The bun was fresh (kudos for that) the patty a bit on the bland side and piled high with crisp lettuce, tomatoes & onions. The fries are of the crinkle variety & were crispy-hot. Went on a Sunday morning about 9am, got there just before the placed was packed. Service was great. Restaurant clean, as with the bathrooms. This is a diner, so do not expect creative or exotic type dishes. The breakfast menu was your standard egg, pancake, cereal type of fare. They had a healthy options section. The egg whites with turkey and cantaloupe looked really good, they give you 1/2 of an entire cantaloupe. I had an omelet, and substitutions were not issue. The omelette was well seasoned, cooked to perfection. The only thing I would have wanted differently would be fresh mushrooms instead of canned. Husband and the eggs and waffle, and he loved it. Kids had pancakes, and the syrup came out nice and warm. And, the waitress handed the syrup directly to me, instead of just placing it on the table where the kids would fight over it (a mom appreciates this very much). The fresh fruit cup was ample amount of fruit, but again would have preferred fresh pineapple over canned. The coffee was decent. Not spectacular, but what you would expect in a diner. They have real half and half, not the chemical stuff. Food came quickly, was fresh and there was no grease. As for price, OMG, about 1/2 of what we paid at an IHOP or Denny's. I have had meals at an Avalon dinner since 1992 WOW are these going down hill fast! I have an onion allergy, so asked for the omelet with no onions. Once I found onions in the omelet ( had eaten 1/4 of it) I sent it back. My specific allergy means I will now spend the rest of the day close to a restroom. When I went to pay it was not removed from the bill and the cashier said well "did you tell them ( rudely spoken) & refused to remove it from bill ( It was written on the order ticket). Very good diner-style food. An absolute TON of menu choices, from breakfast to lunch to entrees. My kids were ready to come back to try other items even before our food came. I see some 1-star reviews here that seem unfair or unfounded. I'm leaving five stars, but let's call it something more like 4.6 stars? We came for a Sunday afternoon brunch around 1pm. No waiting for a table and our friendly, if a little distracted, server came by in the first couple of minutes. Our food came out FAST (say 10 or 15 minutes). Everything was tasty and properly cooked, although I won't say any of it was life changing in nature. Overall: good food, good service, no waiting, and the prices seemed very reasonable. Good place for breakfast or lunch. In my last visit, I had the French toast, which was very good. The sausage patties I ordered were tasty, but a bit on the dry side. I've tried other items here as well and generally have been pleased with them. The waitresses all are very nice and competent. Often, the person who works the cash register seems a bit grumpy. Decided to finally try this place for lunch. Hostess/cashier was not welcoming, and did not appear to want to be there. The waitress was not overly friendly either, and the service was average. The food was not good. I ordered the breakfast plate and wife ordered the chicken fried steak. My eggs had no salt, hash browns were bland, and the sausage patties were way too dry. Wife did not like the chicken fried steak at all and also did not care for the French fries. Overall a bad experience and will not be back. I wanted home cooked food so I decided to stop at Avalon Diner since it was the only place that was open close by. When I walked in I was not greeted but I didn't pay it any mind I sit down and the waitress came over and took my order she was very friendly. They had a lot to choose from from the menu but I decided to go with the big breakfast which consisted of two meats hash brown or pancakes and eggs. It didn't take very long for my food to come out when it came out it was fresh and the food was good. The eggs was nice and fluffy the bacon was just to my liking the sausage was cooked not too hard but just right and the pancakes were okay I've had better. Overall this place is not a bad place it wasn't too crowded the food came out at a decent amount of time and the price was fair. When I was leaving to pay the Indian lady that takes the money did not speak she didn't smile she didn't say bye or anything I would suggest she work on her customer service skills especially since she's dealing with the public. We've been to this Avalon Diner for breakfast many times, but at this point, I don't think we'll be going back. The first couple of times we tried to ignore the rude, blatantly standoffish waitresses (there was one that was fairly friendly one time). Now I'm starting to feel like we are paying for decent diner breakfasts with a side of seriously bad attitude every time. Today our waitress would barely look at us, let alone say anything. It was rather comical, but bad service always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Is it that hard to smile, or say you're welcome when people are thanking you? Especially when we see you treating many other (older) customers much better than us. The food is OK. For me, I only went back because my husband liked it. I find the food to be just OK. It's not bad, but it's not great. Also be aware, when you order food to go, make sure to check your orders. They shorted us pancakes the only time we ever did to-go and it took them a long time. The main pro of this place is the old school diner decorations and feel... but the attitudes of the waitresses just really bring the old school vibe down. New location just opened at I-10 and Kirkwood. Service was decent but the food was horrible. Ordered the chopped steak and it was inedible. The meat did not even come close to looking like ground sirloin. The frozen fries were hot but were not cooked all the way through. My wife had the swiss patty melt and the meat was just as bad. She took 2 bites and that was it. This location will not survive if they don't improve the food. Will not be going back. read more

I really want to like this place and I go back often. Diners are somewhat a rarity in Houston and it's nice to sit in that atmosphere. Unfortunately it's a bit on the pricey side of a diner and the food is only half a step above chain diners like Denny's or IHOP and costs nearly twice the price.
