Happy Pride UYE with Yelp friends
    Zo M.

1st UYE to help celebrate Sunday Brunch.A huge thanks to Lou for a nice catchup with a few new and old Yelp friends. This old time diner had a true diner vibe . When I saw the reviews I was expecting service to be on slower side and not friendly. I did not see that today. There were several waiters that checked on us. My partner and yelpie had coffee which he said was actually quite good. I will definitely come back for their enormous and generous portions after a hard workout. I typically try to eat on the healthier side but don't mind splurging a little , too. Great meeting Brenda and seeing James for a quick meet and greet.

A friend on Yelp recommended me to host a brunch to gather more Yelpers to try out Brunches in the city. Since I am not a morning person, I sure missed what everyone is bragging about. Yeah. I want to try everything at least once. Especially, this Avalon Diner on Katy Freeway is easily accessible from the loop. I am not far from this "The Villages" location. I first learned about Avalon Diner was from my friends who live on the Katy side. But that restaurant has been closed for quite some time. I came here few weeks ago during lunchtime. Restaurant was about half full. I ate a 1938 Drug Store Burger. It was really tasty. So you asked, why 1938 and Drug Store? According to its website, the original restaurant was a food stand inside of a drug store established in 1938. The burger was the item sold back then. Who wouldn't want to have a taste of history? It's the top of the menu, you can't miss it. That was me trying a new restaurant. I look from the top because waitress recommended me so many items to try. According to the cashier, this Avalon Diner has been at its location for 30 years. Everything still looking pretty good. My most recent visit was a group of friends gathered to celebrate the Pride Month. I ordered Migas with Chorizos and Grits. Oh. My. Gosh. It was so good. One of my friends had to leave early. So, he ordered a Speedy-Gonzales breakfast (not sure what they are but I took a picture). It came out so quick, we couldn't even finish talking about the weather. My other friend ordered an omelet. She explained what was in there but my eyes were staring at the humongous portion of food. Hahaha. One of the good things is that waitress helped us to split the bills to the individual level. I wanted to make sure the waitstaff gets a fair share of tips, I asked to pay for one of my guest and added above my standard percentage. Me and two friends arrived at 9 am. There was still plenty of seats to choose from. By the time we left, all tables were all taken and had people waiting at the front. Because it's listed as a LGBT-friendly restaurant on Google, I wanted to help promote the idea of supporting local businesses with the same message. I also have requests to host more brunch events. Avalon Diner is on my book and I look forward to try the one oldest location in the River Oaks area.

So the seating is odd. You basically walk in and the lady at the front tells you how many people are in front of you and you all just wait for people to leave and than take the table you want. She could actually seat you but that would too much work for her. The food was really good. French toast was cooked perfectly and eggs done really well. Biscuit was super fluffy and good. Loved the sausage. Coffee however was really bad. Next time a Diet Coke for me. :). All in all would totally go back

Diner with old school vibes. Our food was great and so was the service. Lots of choices to pick from. Try the breakfast sausage and macaroni... lol not together just mentioning some of my favorites.

We love Sunday breakfast at Avalon! They have that classic diner feel, complete with coffee and good food ! I can't believe I haven't left a review before since we come here so often! Parking: There's plenty of parking since it's located In a small shopping center. There's handicap spots and a ramp almost right in front. Seating: Though the diner is on the smaller side, there's a good amount of seating options split between booths and tables. The booth seating can be a bit cramped/narrow. Wait: We've never had to wait but also usually have breakfast pretty early (830am on sunday). If you come around 10am you may be in for a wait. Food: The food is great! Served warm and fast too. I usually get a breakfast plate but today decided to try something different. The eggs and grits were good as always, but I was disappointed with the chicken fried chicken. It's not actually on the menu, but the waitress said they could make it since they make chicken fried steak (which is on the menu). Unfortunately the chicken just didn't taste quite right for me, but someone in my group got the steak and said it was great. I'll be sticking to my usual breakfast options next time. They do also serve lunch Bathrooms: The bathrooms are pretty basic/exactly what youd expect. There's just one stall so you may have to wait.

If you like char toast this may very well be your go-to spot.

Slow service. Burnt toast. Super fatty bacon. Eggs were cold because they couldn't seem to find any silverware. Pancakes never showed. Coffee is not to current - or really any - standards. Never underestimate the power of a habit - people go because its' familiar. But they shouldn't. Seriously. And don't even get me talking about the pieces of rock hard melon that are supposed to be a fruit cup.

ROACH COOKED INTO MY FOOD. MANAGER ACTED UNSURPRISED.

Cruiser Coffee (Organic) - That's some bitter coffee. It's not sweet, but it has a residual candy-like taste that resembles something I can't quite recall. It's also strong--like it goes as hard as my Vietnamese coffee. My eyes started twitching about half a cup in. Love it. Fresh Orange Juice - OH YEAH. My orange juice connoisseur BFF gave it the thumbs-up of approval. We asked for a glass of ice, and it elevated the drink. Steak and Green Eggs (BFF) - Wow. Those green eggs--what's in them? What is in them? Delicious with buttered toast. The potatoes were perfectly crisp, and that steak? Seasoned so well, super fragrant, and moist. For a breakfast steak, it's great. Admittedly, it was lathered in butter. Annie's Low-Fat, High Protein Burrito - Not my favorite. It tasted a bit too healthy after that incredible steak, but as the flavor lingered, it grew on me. My favorite part was definitely the beans, which came through exceptionally clean. Lox Platter w. Everything Bagel - Exactly what the menu promised with high-quality ingredients. They were VERY generous with the capers, and I'm grateful for that. Refreshing, even with the two containers of cream cheese (I only used one). Their menu is so simple, but they've truly mastered what they serve. The service was very attentive, and our waiter was energetic and humorous. The atmosphere was pleasant and comforting--high-end without the snobby undertone. We'll definitely be back.

It been a Houston institution since 1999. Walking into K&G's can be quite overwhelming on the first visit. Anything you could possibly want is listed on the menu. I recommend looking t it online before coming, just so you can have an idea of what you might want to eat. My dad(96) and I are frequent visitors and we always seem to get the open faced roast beef, which is stacked high and there is always left overs for eating at home the next day. The pickles are a fan favorite for me, and I tend to devour several of them. This visit I decided to try the fried fish sandwich (made with halibut) with onion rings and french fries and my friend, a Houston native who had never been here, went for the Schleppy Joe with onion rings. These sandwiches were stunning and wonderful. I saved half for to go so I could have their classic New York Cheesecake... the best in the city. The entire dining experience was top notch, exactly the experience I always have. My niece wanted the chocolatey-est dessert on the menu so our awesome waiter (a very personable and kind guy) recommended a multi-layered chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and we decided to have it a la mode. He asked if we wanted it hot or warm. We ordered it warm and in hindsight we wish we'd ordered it hot but it was still perfect for a chocolate fix. He even brought out a candle for the cake when he found out her birthday was coming up the following week. I also ordered a cheesecake and we shared each other's desserts. Needless to say we had plenty to take home and we thoroughly enjoyed it the following day as well and at a hotter temperature that was perfect with soft serve ice cream.
